The Manchester United Thread

If we send a weakened team and we get knocked out, I want him fired there and then

Man after my own heart in that regard.

Seriously interested to see what Klopp does if Augsburg is in the balance after the first leg with the second three days before the League Cup final.

Slightly different for you as it's a cup final, so a bit trickier. But there is no real excuse for us, unless we've blown then away in the first leg. Augsburg are a good side as well.

Yeah when City sign Neymar you can moan about it.

How will that even happen? Only one reason astronomical amounts of money, he wants to stay at Barcelona and has ooenly said so. I don't want a player who would just come for money and nothing else. Building a team around money is basically what Madrid do and similar to City in a way (we've adopted a similar approach especially in recent seasons with splashing the cash and it hasn't got us any further, same with Liverpool).

We need to spend wisely, YES I did moan that we didn't really replace Di Maria but that is different to me saying we need to go out right now and get Messi or Ronaldo. It's about getting the right players, not necessarily always the big money players. We need to build a team like Atletico do which has a strong team-ethic. That is the way for success for us in the long-term IMO.

My fault with Woodward is that whenever I hear him speak about transfers and everything I hear about him from the outside is that he idolises Madrid's galactico approach but why would you in a football sense? They've had little success with all the money they spend it is a very flawed way and not the right way for United.

That's why I said that this 'galactico vision' won't work as well because there is difference between us and Madrid. They sign one virtually every summer, whereas we on the other hand, don't pull them off anyway so it's mainly just a lot of speculation or rejection in the case of Muller/Neymar. This is not the strategy that even gains that much success in terms of football as proven by Madrid and not only that, we wouldn't even be able to pull it off like they do anyway.

Imho its the unavoidable truth that "galacticos" as you call them such as NEYMAR are the world's very top players. To say that we dont need them or they "wont work" is dumbfounding. AGUERO is a "galactico" and works fine for ******. BENZEMA is a galactico works fine for REAL. LEVANDOWSKI is a galactico works fine for BAYERN. GRIEZMANN is a galactico (in the making) works well ... oh well I hope you get the drift.

Comparing Madrid to Bayern is just plain wrong. Every top team has some big players, we know that all well and good. I'm not even disputing that we need some big players at all but more the vision of adopting to the same way as Madrid are is a lot different. They literally build their whole team around this image.

When you look at what they've spent and then look at their success say in the last 5 years, you can hardly call this approach successful. You'd expect a much bigger return than what they do. So why would we want to adopt it?

Also lets not forget that we wouldn't even be able to like they do. Every summer we get linked with these big names and never get them. Whereas Madrid on the other hand sign one virtually every summer, maybe more than one. So it just isn't something that will work or bring sustained success at United if you want to adopt this approach, it is simply not our way, totally neglect youth as well. All our old traditions would be gone.

I have already made my points about the transfer approach and IMO you are very wrong about our strategy.

Also every player plays for money. If you think otherwise then you need a reality check.

Plays for money yes obviously, it's part of being in the professional game but players like Herrera/Mata/Smalling/Jones/CBJ/Rooney/Rojo/Blind all play with a sense of passion/heart that goes beyond that, some players you just don''t feel that same connection. For example I can say in the current team the player who I would associate as just purely a money player with little, next to no connection I feel they have, is Depay and Januzaj.

In the modern game there are a lot of money-orientated players and I'm not for one minute suggesting that you're going to eradicate that totally and build a team full of local lads. I'm suggesting that there is still a way to have players who play for the shirt and that is still evident in this current team, with the players I've mentioned.

Just look at Leicester, prime example, in our own league. Tell me them players are just playing for money with the work and heart they put in, week in, week out. There is more to that team than just 'we're playing for money'.

I am convinced that Zzezzy has a split personality.

Target relatively unknown players on the rise? THE CLUB IS WRONG, WE MUST ACQUIRE SUPERSTARS.
Target superstars? THE CLUB IS WRONG, THIS GALACTICO STRATEGY IS NOT WORKING.
Target youth? THE CLUB IS WRONG, WE NEED PROVEN TALENT
Target proven talent? THE CLUB IS WRONG, THEY ARE ABANDONING UNITED IDENTITY.

Jesus on a stick.

Every signing can be debated, that's what I do, but that doesn't mean my rule of thumb for every transfer is the same.

I say repeatedly, every window, every time this debate comes up, we need some big players in the team of course, but to build sustained success we need more than just that, we need a strong team cohesion and balance. That is what Fergie was the true master of, how don't you realise this? There is a happy medium between being like Madrid's galacticos and *insert a club who doesn't spend hardly any when they are desperate to, Aston Villa as an example of January window*.

Unrelated aside but I just wanted to use a quote of yours .....

Your compatriot Dudek has been over this week for an after dinner speaking thing Friday I wasn't at. But by all accounts from friends who where. it's one of the best 'Evening with ..... ' they've ever attended. Aside from running well over and being real open and funny, he was the consummate gentlemen by all accounts and signed everything put before him, never complained at one picture, and took the time to both speak to and thank everyone for coming.

I know he wasn't your favourite player, lol; but kudos to a fellow Countryman of yours. Brilliant to hear when ex-pro's are so giving back.

He's still there they turned down a decent number of bids for him over the last couple years

Wasn't Arsenal linked heavily with him in the last window or 2? Sure he came out and said he has affection for the gunners or some such bollocks.

Yeah apparently a bid of 13 million plus Joel Campbell was turned down two years ago, so it will take a lot to prise him away as his value will have gone up since then

You mean the same Rooney who was ready to leave before got bumper deal? Dortmund manager said many times that Januzaj just couldn't cut his ties with ManUtd and feel completely home at Dortmund, that's one of the reason for his failure and you are calling him money *****. Every player is motivated by money, otherwise they would be playing for their home clubs. Just see how many players have packed their bags to China.

It's not evident.

They play not because they love or die for the club. They play because they are paid nicely and are on shop window to move to bigger clubs where they are paid even higher wages.

If you want to avoid players like Neymar because they are motivated by money then City wouldn't have signed anyone in last 6-7 years.

I cba to argue with you anymore. You have your opinion, I have mine.

Money is motivation for every footballer, not questioned that, but it isn't everything for everyone. Rooney gives his all on the pitch and not many do that, yes he has done things in the past which are questionable but I never said he was perfect.

Comparing Rooney's attitude to someone like Januzaj just isn't comparable on the pitch, it really shows to anyone who actually watches them.

Who's going for an early bath?
Fellaini or Costa? ;)

Makes you wonder if we did actually make Rooney available in the summer (which we won't) how much would a club from China actually offer for him? Must be astronomical.

I'm sure Fellaini is sending LVG nudes or something I have no idea how he always seems a certain starter.

I can't work out what He offers our midfield.
He runs around looking confused for 90 minutes.
