The Manchester United Thread

United will be sending a squad to this year's Otten Cup in Eindhoven hosted by PSV starting saturday and finishing on Sunday.

It is an U/19 youth tournament and this will be the first year we will compete.

The Reds are in Group B along with Borussia Moenchengladbach, PSV Eindhoven and Chivas Guadalajara.

The tournament is 2 x 30 minute halves so they are not full matches.

I expect the official MUFC site will provide some details at some point.

Just been reading up on this and the lads have done well getting to the semi vs Barca tomorrow.

Remember how Bastian got his injury? Fighting for a 50-50 ball, late in the game to stop the counterattack. His leg bended so awkwardly, it looked like a guaranteed career ending injury. But instead of being carried off on a stretcher, he stayed on the pitch because you had no subs. He could barely walk.

I can get behind demoting superstars who are completely past it, or have already won everything there is to win and don't have that winning drive anymore. But that's not Bastian, that guy always gives his 110%. He even ended his NT participation to focus on United career, for god's sake.

What other option is there though? He is no longer part of the first-team. No sense having him continue training with them doing the specific tatical drills Jose has them doing and sitting through strategy sessions.

Totally agree. Mou is "free" not to want him. But whats the harm in letting him train with the first teamers till he is sold? I didnt like LVGs treatment of Valdes' either.

Disappointed to hear that Schweinsteiger will be as good as sold, in my eyes a modern day legend of the game who has still something to offer (particularly in the big games when experience is required), but Mourinho's the gaffer now and to be honest, I can see how a 32 year injury-prone player, regardless of how superb he's been throughout is career, doesn't appeal to Jose in terms of going forward as a club. As for those saying they'd rather of keep Schweinsteiger as opposed to Fellaini, they're different types of players, in my eyes it looks a simple Pogba in/Schweinsteiger out situation... as much as Maroune lacks in certain areas, and can be a bit of a liability in terms of temperament, he offers a different dimension to United when needed. If it weren't for his sheer presence alone for that knock down to Mata back in May, we'd be watching Crystal Palace v Leicester tomorrow. Sure he's not easy on the eye, he won't dictate games and I think it's pretty safe to say he won't be smashing in double figure goals or assists per season, but he will do a job for Mourinho when called upon, and will pop up with some important goals here and there, not to mention getting his head on the ball at the other end. We don't need a squad full of superstars, just a team, it's nice to have variety.

It's ridiculous that he hasn't even given him a chance. I can understand Fellaini staying because even though he's an average player, there isn't anyone similar to him in the squad. But there's guys like Rojo and Jones being given a chance to prove themselves (& in Phil's case, his fitness); and as much as I like Carrick, he's older than Bastian and wasn't as good as him last season. This summer has been great for the club (despite two of our transfers dragging) but this whole situation with Schweinni is ruining it.

We're one of the most injury prone teams in the league, if Jose thinks he'll only need around 25 players he's mistaken. If it's Basti's fitness and wages that are his main concern then why not offer him a new amended contract? Lower his weekly salary, insert a clause that temporarily reduces the wages if he's injured for over a month; and give him better bonuses for when he is playing.

It's not like our midfield is stacked with good players. Fellaini is more suited to being up front, Carrick should retire within the next year, we've rarely seen Schneiderlin at his Southampton best and Herrera was a headless chicken last season. If Basti is being judged on the previous campaign then the rest should be too, and if that's the case I want Pogba and another midfielder to partner him.

Tbh I like Basti and think he could do a job but I don't think we really need him especially now Carrick is staying. We have Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Schniederlin, Blind, Periera, TFM and Pogba joining. Not exactly short of option for 2 midfield spots. All the best Basti!

Mourinho never gave mata a chance as well. Regarding the injury prone comment, Jose has his way of handling injuries. His injury free record with teams is quite remarkable, perhaps due to his laid back approach in training sessions and having Rui faria, who is an excellect physiotherapist.

Its the real world, not Football Manager. Why would he even consider accepting a new contract, with less basic wage, if he's not going to be playing anyway? Full money and not play, or less money and not play. Hard choice.

5 years ago De Gea made his debut. Which means 4.5 years ago I went "He looks a bit sh*t wonder if he will ever be any good at United"

Think that one has been answered

Holy ****, never expected it!!! United sure kept this one quiet. Woody is a transfer ninja.

No more tweets or otherwise on Pogba unless a club announces it. Media have been saying near enough the same **** for weeks.

To be honest a deal like this would never be possible to be kept under wraps.

When you think of the biggest transfers in recent times such as Suarez, Neymar, Ronaldo and Bale. Everyone knew about it long before it happened.

Whilst I agree this has got very boring and has taken seemingly an age to happen. It doesn't seem as boring as Bale to Madrid that lasted until nearly the end of the window to complete.

Sorry Mike my bad I posted this time due to being from good sources and they claiming both clubs had given there permission.

Is this the first time that the Community Shield isn't available on free-view? Last time I properly watched it was back when we beat Wigan and that was covered by BBC. All about the money for football nowadays..

(For those wondering why I'm complaining, I cancelled the BT package; only have the Sky Sports channels & MUTV).

I was really surprised when I found out it wasn't on BBC or ITV. Luckily I have BT Sport though :P
