The goal from ibrahimovic was the perfect example of what was wrong last season under LVG. Last year a player in that position would have checked back and passed either sideways or backwards.

And going off today's performance Bailly completely proved me wrong. Hope he keeps it up

I honestly don't know what put you off him so much in the friendlies, Bailly has been excellent in every game I'vse seen of him so far. He is a hard ******* in that defence and I'm liking it, about time we had some spine to our team.

Also I agree with the guy who said Blind does compliment a CB like Bailly very well, like I say I reckon Smalling will have his work cut out getting into this defence at the moment.

In the friendlies he was constantly out of position. Like he couldnt read the game. Only thing he had was his pace to recover but he was flying in to tackles. I thought its only a matter of time before he starts bringing people down. I thought he was a red card waiting to happen. Even in the charity shield he was out of position a few times but used his pace to get back and make a recover. Should have been off when he clattered a Leicester player on the edge of their box. No need to fly in. And the was a header out from a free kick on the left hand side. It was played to the back post and it was like Bailly just jumped and closed his eyes and hoped for the best. Really didnt fill me with confidence. But fair play to him today he did everything right. Never out of position, stepped up or into a tackle when he needed to, composed on the ball apart from one sloppy pass but Rooney did a few of them aswell.

And ive just this minute sent a txt to my mate saying exactly what you just said about Smalling. Bailly looked really good today doing Smalling's job, and Blind has done nothing wrong to be kicked out. Will be interesting to see what happens with Smalling. Raises a few questions as to his form last season. He was brilliant but the more Blind plays, was Smallings good form down to the way Blind plays next to him, because Bailly has slotted in exactly the same with Blind still being excellent.

I think its got to be one of Smalling/Bailly with Blind. Smalling and Bailly are too similar to play together in my opinion. Blind compliments them both well. If today was anything to go by, and its gonna be that level of performance week in week out, then Bailly would be ahead of Smalling. But today was Bournemouth so not getting too carried away. Lets see who he goes with for Southampton. But I'd keep the same team as today but swap Fellaini for Pogba. Glad to see Herrera getting a game. Once he gets a run he could be our Fabregas from Chelsea for the first half of the other season. Especially with Pogba next to him being everywhere at once. Will allow him more freedom on the ball.

Blind has his flaws, but today is just another reason why I like him so much, and defended him much of last season, perfect cover partner for the relentlessly aggressive Bailly and Smalling.

Bailly and smalling are different actually

Bailly is more aggressive and much better on the ball.

Smalling is more of a reader of the game with good presence in the box with very good aerial ability. He hardly ever dives into challenges but Bailly does that a lot. He didn't dive into them as much today, perhaps mou had a word or 2 about that.

Yeh thats what I mean. Thats what I picked up on in the friendlies. Was out of position a lot because his reading of the game was poor. But then was using his pace to recover but flying into tackles. Luckily enough he got them right but from what I seen I thought it was just a matter of time before he clatters somebody and gets sent off. But today he was excellent. I dont know if Bailly is better on the ball. Too early to tell yet but he did do well. Smalling is very composed on the ball and has no problems bringing it out over the half way line and playing a decent pass out wide. Bailly is more agressive in his tackling though. Like you say, Smalling reads the game better so is already in a good position to win the ball, whereas Bailly doesnt read it so well but then goes storming in. He's like a hybrid of Smalling and Jones. Jones constantly flies in looking to intercept the ball but often misses amd leaves a hugh hole behind. Bailly at least has the pace to get back and recover. If Jose can reign a bit of that agressiveness in (I mean not reading the game and storming in) and can keep him more composed, he looks like he can be pretty good. But I'd say more of a Rio than a Vidic if he can get his reading of the game up a couple of levels.

Am i the only united fan who was disappointed with martial? In truth, since the euros, he hasn't been himself. The 2 assists perhaps maskes an average performance.

Fellaini, on the other hand, shut me up yesterday. As you lot would know, when I saw fellaini's name on the team sheet, I threw chairs around the place and overturned a lot of tables but he was actually good. Broke up play well and passed the ball well (only short passes but still good). He didn't contribute a lot offensively but defensively, he was spot on.

Now to rooney, the conundrum that never seems to go away. I swear, he has a "start me in every game" clause in his contract put in by moyes. It breaks my heart so dearly to see an off form rooney playing ahead of the Bundesliga player of the year all because of some mere arm band.

Dont think it was Rooney in Mikhitaryan's place. More likely Mata but I know what you mean. But that said, Cant really include last years performances against anybody. Rooney has been "ok" so far in pre-season and in the two proper games so far, and obviously scored a goal yesterday. He seems to be getting better. If he gets a decent run behind somebody like Ibrahimovic and is allowed to attack, I think he'll find some kind of decent form. The intelligence of Ibrahimovic will help Rooney a lot, opening up space by dragging defenders out and his intelligence on the ball playing in Rooney, who is also intelligent enough to read the pass.

I agree Martial wasnt great today, but its one game. After what he's done so far, he's due a quiet one. Wouldnt worry too much about it.

Fellaini is his own worst enemy. When he's used right, he can have a massive impact at both ends, but once he gets ****** off and his elbows start flying he lets himself down. Cant see him being in once Pogba gets into the team. Im hoping he sticks with Herrera though. Once he gets a run he'll be class, especially with the options infront of him.

I think it's kinda good Martial's had an off game and perhaps isn't playing as amazingly yet as he was last season, yet we still comfortably won both this game and the Community Shield (don't think Leicester played well at all last weekend and only got their goal because of that ****** Fellaini back pass...) without him.

It show's that we're no longer reliant on a 19 year old to do everything for us :P

I think Martial will start picking up soon. He's only been back in training a few weeks now and he didn't exactly get a lot of minutes in the Euros, so it will definitely take a few weeks for him to get back up and running. Hopefully to the same level as last season :D

Plus he just went through a pretty nasty broke up with his wifey so that explains everything. :D

Looks like Mou is gonna bring in Fonte according to a lot of sources. Pilib De Bruin says it could be done next week, same source who told him about Pogba and Bailly.

Considering we havent spoken to the player, let alone the club, I would say he's weighing in far too early.

Fonte would be an odd signing for me, kind of feel like Blind takes that experienced CB role now. As odd as that sounds.

I like Fonte, but I wouldn't bother with him unless you're replacing Rojo.

And frankly that sounds like a bad move for Fonte to come and sit on the bench.
