When you look at forward players United have available - Rooney, Martial, Lingard, Miki, Young and Rashford - none of them are technical geniuses or world beaters, but the one thing they have in common, is they're all work horses. Whatever combination of players you create out of that, you will have very industrious front three. They will all help defend, and in attack they may not be dribbling past 5 players, but they will make themselves available for pass and try to make things happen.
And maybe that's what you need to do really. I mean when your central midfield always consists of two brilliant passers of Herrera(Carrick)/Pogba, maybe what you need to do is to just give them options upfront and the goals will come, instead of having them feed Zlatan for 90 minutes and pray for a moment of magic.
Whatever the explanation, it certainly seems like a transformed team, although we'll see how long it lasts.
