The Manchester United Thread

I agree that was by a country mile his best performance. I didn't read that article Scouse shared the other day, but the title summed up his performance today; doing nothing is exactly what we needed. Just some stability to provide Pogba the platform.
Exactly what we need and he’s following Mourinho instructions down to a T. He really helped Pogba be more free and dominant in the second half. Only gonna get better. His temperament is already top draw. Not seen Hazard so quite since Herrera did a job on him.

Defo need to start seeing Shaw more and him and Martial linking up together they already have a good understanding. Same for Bailly and Lindelöf want you to see that develop!

One thing Martial doesn't do is slow the game down, if anything he's too direct (which isn't the worst complaint). He was our bright spark for 45 of the 60 mins he was on, which coincided with Alexis Sanchez's invisibility.

We need to play him at LW always, with Shaw as they have a nice understanding.

Again my point with Matic slowing the play down. When the ball is clearned and goes to matic, he should be going forward and looking for a quick pass in behind up the wings to Martial or Sanchez. But the time he had turned on the ball, then turned again, the opposition are back and we try to play slowly through the middle to involve sanchez. Thats never going to work. Especially not against Chelsea. No wonder Sanchez was anonymous. Matic killed every counter attack we had.

I get that but hes been nowhere near the player he was for the first 10 games or so of the season. He was bossing midfield and bringing the ball forward confidently. Now he gets the ball, runs forward a couple of steps then turns round to look for a backwards pass. Then either turns into trouble or turns again and plays a sloppy pass. All our problems seem to start from him either not getting forward quickly enough when a break is on or giving the ball away sloppily by playing blind passes.

Carrick had all that what you say, but still managed to get the ball forward at the right opportunity. Something Matic was doing consistently at the start of the season. Which in turn made Pogba play a lot better. Its no coincidence Pogba has been **** while Matic has been doing this for weeks.

Could be managers instructions for all we know. Could easily swing it that Matic hasn't been the same since the Pogba injury too.

Personally think he has as much mileage as anyone in the entire division, and needs a deserved rest but we don't really have that luxury. Although we could give Carrick a 90 at DM, maybe away to Palace and freshen him up for the Liverpool/Sevilla double header. Feels silly saying this off the back of a top performance, as I don't think he's in bad form. It's just he was never going to keep up the levels of his first month or so, otherwise he'd be a contender for Balon dor!

Consistent 7/10, with the odd 8 in between.

Matic is far more than a break up play and keep it simple type player. Just look at the assists he got for Chelsea over the years playing the same position. He's more than capable of picking a pass. Maybe im being harsh on Matic for simply following instruction from the Manager. The whole team needs freeing up and allowed to play football to our strengths. We seem too focused on stopping the opposition rather than playing out game. We know what you get from Jose in big games, and when it works nobody would ever complain, but we seem to be taking this game plan into every single match now and making life hard for ourselves. Something needs to change

He slipped a nice pass into feet of Sanchez, who subsequently made the pre-assist from that. Sanchez was anonymous because we overloaded the left, always tried to get it to Martial who had Moses/Azpi on their toes for that entire half. Sanchez should've even scored from a Martial cross early in the first half, or at the very least tested the keeper more.

Sanchez got better when he was moved to the left after Martial was taken off for Lingard, which tells me we have two match-winners who are most comfortable/want to play on the left.

Again, it could be instructions from Jose. "Stop evacuating your position, Pogba's not going to cover you", "keep it simple", etc.

Agree with all of that. Mourihno telling him to hold his position more, looks absolutely knackered come the end of games. And it’s been reported a few times he’s playing with a minor injury.

Matic is absolutely knackered and needs a rest. Hasnt helped that Carrick has had his heart trouble and can't cover him.

..... That's all you want from your DM. It's the 2nd CM of the 3, which today was McTominay, that needs to the one controlling the tempo and breaking lines. Hence why we're looking at Kroos, Weigl, Jorginho etc.

He not a DM? Know nottin' about him bar a quick mooch around after Joyce's link to L'pool last night.

Most things seemed to suggest he was. Or I presume a DLP with license to go forward as we view the Klopp 6.

Yeah he’s defo more a DLP than DM mate who ain’t bad at getting forward and creating also.

He's an intelligent passing all rounder. Would be a brilliant addition to any side

For all the criticism aimed at Mourinho about not promoting youth, he's well and truly established McTominay in your squad so deserves credit for that, especially as based on pure talent, he's hardly your biggest prospect.

What he does do is follow Mourinho's instructions to a tee, and that makes you wonder why he doesn't promote from within more often - surely younger, impressionable players are more determined to follow orders?

Good point on younger players likely being more easier to get to follow instructions. Guess it sometimes a mixture of pressure to succeed when managing a huge club. And depends on the mentality of the younger player. Think Mourinho is showing here though that if your good enough and thinks your mentality is strong enough you will get chances McTominey, Tuanzebe, TFM, Periera, Joel, Gomes, Mitchell.

Strange to think how many academy players we could have in the squad next year. Add to that the likes of Rashford, Lingard technically Pogba is still from our academy. Who would of thought that under Mourinho!

Confident we will win fairly comfortable at our place. Got the right formation now. Confidence will be high plus Bailly back. And there GS record is shocking on the road.

Just been watching the second half replay and MOTD and Matic and McTominey were absolutely fantastic that second half. Harassing making interceptions great pressing up the pitch. McTominey with some very good forward passes too.

We definitely should of showed more ambition, lets hope it doesn't cost us. if it does we only have ourselves to blame.
