The Warrington Way

Introduction

Hi there, my name is John Warrington and this is my journey in football (manager). After beginning my career back in 1997, I had a playing career spanning 20 years starting and ending at Tranmere Rovers with spells at Liverpool, Swansea, West Brom, Preston and Leicester in between. Now though it's time for the next chapter in my career. I'm going to leave this post free to keep a track of my career.

My Playing Career

Here is my playing career in full (Simulated on FM18).

My Managerial Career

The Warrington Way

The Journey Begins

So after my retirement, I decided to spend some time away from the front line of football, working within the Centre of Development at Tranmere doing some coaching and continuing to work on my coaching badges. Fast forward to July 2019 and I've found myself a little restless as of late, therefore when Warrington Town approached me asking if I'd like to take the manager's job vacated by Paul Carden in the summer, I jumped at the chance.

330db83edd9a9bbc9c612d4c84c416c6.png

The goal for this season is simple, promotion to the Vanarama National League North. We have the squad to do it and the media are predicting a 2nd place finish for us.

The Stadium

55fb45dee99ac6dc20f11b93dee80314.png

Warrington play their home games at Cantilever Park which holds 2,000 people. It's one of the smaller grounds at our level but I think it does the job for us for now.

Facilities

As you'd expect for a semi-professional side, our facilities are either basic or at best poor. Given that I want to be able to bring in young players from our development squads, improving our youth set-up will definitely be one of my priorities moving forward.

The Staff Team

So the first thing I've noticed since joining the club is the lack of staff here! Here's a quick look at the current team I have to work with.

3a56836d4d6784ab74e76f2c7b263e13.png

As you can see, it's paper thin and in desperate need of a couple of new additions. My aim now is to find some new recruits including a new Chief Scout and a new Head Physio. I'll report back here once I've managed to sort things out.

The Squad

77fe0c084aeb45973a4e4f5aa2dc424a.png

Speaking of paper thin...the squad isn't in the best of shape depth wise. On first glance I can see that I'm going to need to find a left-back and a couple of centre-backs in order to strengthen us ahead of the new season.

2nd July
I won't be going into detail with our friendly fixtures but our first one saw our first team take on our U23's.

It kind of set the tone for the game when Jack Mackreth scored with just 16 seconds on the clock. From them on, we were the better team for the majority of the game, aside from a 5 minute spell in the first half, during which Witton Albion scored. A superb three points in my first away game as boss.

Not a good one for my heart this one. They took an early lead which was disappointing but we roared back with three goals. Their second with just over 15 minutes to go made things a bit nervy for us, with them missing a great chance with 5 minutes left. Thankfully for us, Danny Racchi saw red for them late on which killed the game off.

Another great win in the end. I thought that we weren't really at the races in the first half, despite going in with a one goal lead. For the first time in my managerial career, I had to give the players a piece of mind and to their credit, they dominated the second half and deserved to win.

The first time we've dropped points this season and it was more than a little annoying. We had enough chances to win about three games but didn't take any of them before they then hit us on the break in the second half. That goal took it out of us and we never recovered. Disappointing.

After the disappointing draw last time out, I decided to run with a two striker formation for the home game against Mickleover. It was a total success as we ran out 30 winners and dominated the game. That's definitely given me food for thought.

We made an absolutely horrendous start, conceding inside the first three minutes. That seemed to shock the lads back into life and we equalised almost straight away. From there, we were the better team and safely made it into the 3rd qualifying round. Still a lot of room for improvement.

Another great away win. Our second half performance was a joy to behold and a specific mention has to go to Matt Chadwick, who came off the bench to score twice. I was particularly pleased to see former transfer target Lewis McNall fail to net for Buxton, whilst the guy we signed instead, Tom Heardman, scored twice.

Unbeaten and we're already starting to build a gap between us and second place, which is fantastic. Hopefully we can keep up this good form and continue to edge away from the rest. Definitely can't complain when you look at the fact that we've scored the most and conceded the least in the league.

We were second best all over the pitch and got away with a draw in this one. I had to switch to 3 in midfield in the second half to stop us getting overrun in midfield which really limited our options going forward. I've got a big decision to make before the replay on Wednesday.

Absolutely disgraceful. In the first half we were excellent, going in at half-time with a three goal lead. WHAT HAVE I JUST WITNESSED!? I dropped our wingers into right and left midfield for this one in order to be a little more defensive against a side TWO leagues above us but what I saw was totally unexpected. We absolutely DOMINATED and I mean dominated Hartlepool, their keeper made THIRTEEN saves. What a performance from the lads.

Three points, job done. That said, I hope we never have to have that pathetic excuse of a referee again. The guy spent more time with this cards out than he did refereeing the game. He gave out thirteen cards including a second for Lewis Blackshaw late on.

HSDHDHFHFJDSF LIMBS! SCENES! MIRACLES! WHAT JUST HAPPENED!? Jordan Corke is a new FA Cup hero. I can't believe that's happened. I thought we were out, the ball just wouldn't seem to go into the net. Then Chadwick scored and I thought we'd earned a replay but Jordan Corke with a header in injury time means we beat football league opposition and go into the 2nd round. Unbelievable.

Lewis Blackshaw is an idiot, he has cost us our unbeaten start to the season. To their credit, Morpeth were very good and more than matched us and a draw would have been a fair result. It looked to be heading that way before Lewis stupidly got himself sent off at the death, which they then capitalised on. Fuming.

The FA Cup dream is over for this year but we can really proud of what we have achieved. Stevenage deserved the win but we gave them a right good go and could have won it on another day. I'm proud of the lads and I hope the fans are too.
