As expected. Good to see him on loan at a Premier League club.

Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart believes Luka Modric's desire to leave White Hart Lane is not down to financial reasons.

The 25-year-old Croatia playmaker last month stunned Spurs supporters by declaring he wants to leave - with Chelsea and Manchester United both linked with the schemer.

The north London club have rejected a £22million bid for Modric, with chairman Daniel Levy saying the player is not for sale.

However, Holland international Van der Vaart said on Sky Sports News: "If someone wants to leave it's difficult to keep them. When a player is unhappy it's not a good thing.

"Luka and (Gareth) Bale don't play for money - they play to win something. If they have to go to another club it's their decision.

"But I hope they stay because they are fantastic and really important for the club."

Van der Vaart was speaking on the day Spurs players returned for pre-season training, seeking to make up for the disappointment of missing out on Champions League football in the forthcoming campaign.

The 28-year-old added: "Drop too many points and you don't deserve to be in the Champions League. So next season we are going to focus on the Europa League.

"As a player you want to improve every year but the important thing is to help the team. If we stay together we have a good squad."

One player who has arrived at White Hart Lane is Brad Friedel - the 40-year-old former Aston Villa and Blackburn goalkeeper having signed a two-year deal last month.

He joins Heurelho Gomes and Carlo Cudicini on Spurs' books, and Van der Vaart said: "I had a chat with him (Friedel) and he's a really nice guy.

"I think he's going to help us. We now have three fantastic goalkeepers."

Yeah, VDV was like "Spurs are not the right place to win something".
We just need to sign a classy striker and a classy defender, then we can battle for the top 4.

Spurs sign 16 year-old striker Coulibaly according to SS, bloke won the U19 Golden Boot, next Drogba?

Brad Friedal...what..a..signing.

First game and hes made 1 howler and was lucky not to have conceded in the last minute.

Mr. Reliable

Don't worry, you'll always have Gomes. Noone would take him tbh :P

What do you guys think about Adebayor coming? I yelled "finally" when I heard it

Wait wait, Spurs are getting Adebayor? Oh that is priceless. Cannot wait to see the faces of all the Spurs fans who aren't Sam.

Basically Redhead wanted to bring him on loan lol, but he'd rather won't.

Most of them would, in turn, want to see Sam face to face.

Don't think there is actually any movement on our end for Adebayor Sam. SSN just picked that up from the BBC, who picked it up from the Daily Mail - ergo, bullshit.

Would rather **** out my eyes before seeing him in a Spurs shirt.

I also Lol'ed at Modric being captain today. Even though he did play fairly well, shame we never actually looked like scoring from open play unless it was from a Bale run down the left.

I dont think why would any club who are not able to sign Top class striker can turn down Adebayor. He may be **** at ManCity, but he was very good at Arsenal and one of the best in the league for around 1-2 seasons. He just needs to get back his motivation. He was very hard to play and if I'm not wrong many top CBs in the league chose Adebayor as tough striker to play against as he is physically very strong, very quick and can win aerial battles more often than not. With the service he will get from Bale and co he can easily solve the striker crisis at Lane.

But City wont sell him to Spurs IMO. They wont sell any player to their direct rivals..

I'd love him at Spurs, at the end of the day he is a 30 goals a season player former Arsenal or not

1. He's only scored 30 goals in a season once, in his annus miribilis in 2007-08. Since then, he's been mostly useless, aside from one excellent patch with City.
2. His attitude is truly awful. At the moment, he's currently on strike because he's not playing, which gives you some idea.
3. His wage demands would be astronomical.

Meh, Hes a 1 hit wonder...Living off the sucess of 1 good season. Forced a move to City after a terrible season and did nothing of note there and then didnt do much for Madrid on loan. Hes a moneygrabbing **** and wont improve the team more than Crouch/Defoe and even Keane(who I think Spurs should keep as he can still do a job for them)
