It'd be great to see Klinsmann at Spurs again. Chelsea fans can't be happy at this news though

If you can shift the players on, you can certainly cut your wage bill by a third. (The if is a tough one though - who's going to take Ireland? Same problem Liverpool have with Joe Cole). But assume you do. Problem then is, well, who do you play in your team? You've cut out most of your squad players, lost some major first team players, your budget is in balance. And so, without then increasing your wagebill again, who will be coming in and how will their wages be paid? Think it through - to bring players in, you not only have to shift the dead wood but also make extra room to pay the new guys' wages.

True, though I think Ireland is less of a problem than Beye, Heskey et al - he does at least have SOME quality (if a terrible mentality). All the people I mentioned (with the exception of Young and NRC) aren't playing in the first team, with the exception of Petrov, and quite a few aren't even squad players. I think the time has come to bring up some of our youth. The likes of Albrighton, Bannan and Clark have all excelled this season, and Delfouneso, Baker, Johnson and Gardner are all excellent prospects. We would need to invest in new full-backs, maybe new centre-backs (offset by the sale of our current ones) a new keeper (the excellent Benjamin Siegrist can act as a No. 2) and maybe a creative midfielder and then we would have more or less a complete squad. For example, from our current starting line-up of this:

Friedel
L. Young - Collins - Dunne - Clark
Makoun - NRC - Delph
Downing - Bent - Young

to this:

New GK
L. Young - Cuellar - Clark - New LB/Baker
Bannan - Makoun - Delph
Albrighton - Bent - Downing

Would require very little investment, and likely end up with far less wages on the first team. And, I'd say, not too much drop-off in ability: an ineffective Young is replaced by one of the most promising wingers in the Prem, and Nigel Reo-Coker is replaced by a Champions League-standard defensive midfielder moving into his favoured position and an extremely talented young midfielder taking that spot. That's just an example, of course, but it can definitely be done.

More Heskey and Ireland than Beye. And sure, he's a decent player. And sure you held Manchester City to ransom. But you'll not get £20m for Downing and I reckon if a bid for c.£15m comes in, you'll take it if he wants to go (whichever club puts the bid in). Lerner's clever enough to realise the backside is going to fall out of the transfer market once the new fair play rules comes in and he'll be getting close to the peak price for Downing this summer.

No. Ireland's on about 55k p/w, Heskey on 60k p/w. Beye's on 40k, and Downing on 45k. Downing's not on 115k p/w (which is what Heskey and Ireland would be) by any stretch of the imagination.

Well, that's your opinion. As I said, Lerner knows he won't challenge for Europe without retaining key players, and Downing is most definitely one of them.

twitter feed reporting 'Arry has left Spurs, and looks likely to join Chelsea.

@Sol_Campbell - Seems like Redknapp has gone, good luck at Chelsea Harry you deserve all the success in the world.

I seriously doubt that account is real. And how the **** would Sol Campbell know anything about it? It will be hilarious if he does go to Chelsea, though. They'll be buggered.

Don't you sort of urr, umm.. have to scratch Downing from that 2nd team-sheet?

No, because I was assuming we keep him. If not, ****, use the money to sign another winger on roughly the same wages.

Will do a thread on it Godcubed. Villa's situation is interesting right now.

They need to rebuild, last season was disastrous.

Well. to be fair their best keeper (Buffon) and left-back De Ceglie were injured for most of the season if I'm not mistaken. Not an excuse, as the team in general has enough quality to pull off a better league position and other teams also have to battle with injuries, but especially the keeper in this case could have somewhat made a difference I believe, personally I don't rate Manninger nor Storari that high.
But yeah, they have to rebuild the team a bit, as i believe most Seria A top sides should. Them players are all getting on a bit. Which doesn't necessarily mean that they don't have quality, Del Piero, Inzaghi and co. are all still quite lethal in front of goal. But midfielders and defenders often just don't have the pace anymore that is required. Therefor I'm ot sure about the Pirlo deal, he's still class with his passes and vision, but still a bit of an odd signing I think. Well at least he came for free.

The squad is ageing. that is the main problem. They need new blood in there to get them going again. Don't get me wrong, Del Piero and co are idols, icons, legends, but someone has to take the risk and leave them out, and bring in new players.

:D For real?! he would surely cost a bomb, whats his release clause?

His release clause is set at 30m € (Hulk's at 100m €). According to the club's president none of the players are to be sold for offers below their respective release clauses. And I think that currently Porto are trying to negotiate a new contract with Falcao to boost the clause a bit and to make it more likely to keep him at the club. As Porto wants to go into next season's Champions League with a strong team.

I'm pretty sure Porto basically said they would sell their top players... Selling club and I'm not sure how much they'd rather keep Falcao then to get a decent sum for him.

So roman sacks Carlo to replace him with 'Arry. Pathetic doesn't quite describe the situation...

It'd be cool if Carlo went to spurs, though.

Loving this rumour. Even if nonsense, my missus has her mother staying, and I'm ******* myself laughing just typing. Their faces are an absolute picture.

yeah true that, in general the Italian teams seem to be a bit cautious of giving starting spots to younger players, the top teams in particular. Think they rather go with the more experienced players. Haven't been following much of the Seria A to be honest, but that is the impression i get. Hence me being a bit sceptical about the Pirlo move, think he was brought in as to have cover for the most likely not to happen Aquilani transfer the latteris a bit more of an attacking player than Pirlo, but both play best on the central position. And Juve doesn't seem to have a lot of alternatives for that area, well the dealing has only just begun, still a lot could be happening.

I've seen an Interview with the Porto president I think 2 days ago, where he said he would be trying to keep the players in order to be a competitive team. But yeah I mean in the end he can pretty much say what he wants, as i believe if the offer is reasonable the club will agree to consider it. No club in the right mind would cough up a 100m € for Hulk. It's all business in the end. Saying that they won't sell is pretty much is just an incentive for other club's to bid a tad more.
And I believe I know what you're refering to, about the players being allowed to go. What was said by the coach I think, about being willing to listen to offers for Falcao rounding the 10m (not sure if it was €). I'm quite sure the coach was being ironic... I mean the market value of Falcao is basically twice that much, they'd have to be mental for letting him go that cheap especially after the season he had.

Quote:
Aston Villa's player of the year Stewart Downing is refusing to commit to a new contract with the club.

Villa's caretaker manager, Gary McAllister, had suggested the club would be opening talks with Downing over an improved and extended deal, but the winger, who has two years remaining of his current contract, says that will not be happening in the foreseeable future.

The former Middlesbrough player told the Northern Echo: "I know the club are keen for me to extend my contract as I only have two years left on my deal.

"My agent had a recent meeting with our chief executive. However, I am 26, and at a major crossroads in my career, so I won't be committing to a new deal at the moment."

Downing said he was delighted to be playing regularly after an injury-hit first season following his £12m move from in the summer of 2009, but added that he wants to play Champions League football.

"I want to keep playing and enjoying my football. When I was injured that made me realise what it can be like to be out for such a long time. It hurt. The most important thing is to play football, but I do want to play in the Champions League at some point."

Please please please please please let the Redknapp rumour be true. Ancelotti/Moyes would be fantastic. Dunno what the **** Campbell is talking about. Don't think I will ever believe any of the **** that comes out of his mouth.

In other news, Gio Dos Santos has stated his desire to sign for Santander who supposedly have a clause to buy him for 11m Euros. Would be a fantastic deal for us.

Clearly a fake account for one. For another thing, I don't think Ancelotti would join Spurs. Moyes might but I feel he's pretty committed to Everton.

The same Ancelotti that was so desperate to stay in England that he was willing to go into the Championship? Your telling me that he would turn down a top 5 team? Really?

Think Moyes would, he looked like he had given up all hope during this season and reckon he would be lured by the opportunity of working with some money.
