Here I am, 21 years old. With nothing going for me in my life. Recently had experience in working in a cocktail bar and before that a carpet shop. After going through a stagnant stage of living everyday life I decided to quit my job and go study for a few coaching badges to get involved in football. Something which has been a passion of mine since my father used to take me to kick a ball on the park. I was a youth-team player at Grimsby Town until being released in my second year after a very nasty injury which I never fully recovered from, I was always the one to look deeper into the game and think how could we have done better, how could we have done this. It has always intrigued me the lifestyle and everyday job of a manager so I fancied my chances in doing so.

Although I have no experience at higher level, I've helped out local teams with training sessions and they have benefited massively from this and opened their eyes to another avenue in the game.

I was offered a job at part-time club Cleethorpes Town the season before now which I gained promotion but I became growingly frustrated at the lack of quality and basically nothing which I could improve so I left my post and I am still currently searching for a club. I am open to work anywhere in the world but my safest bets at the minute would be staying in England, somewhere where my roots are and I can continue to grow as a manager. There is still so much I need to learn in the game, I just hope I can find a club which are willing to give me the chance.

Rejection.
View attachment 330368

A few weeks into the season, I was calling up lots of clubs and asking them to give me atleast an interview, many didn't even offer me that and some gave me an interview but they wanted a man with vast experience in the game. I began to grow frustrated why nobody would take the risk with me, I was confident in my own abilities and know I will be able to grow as a manager. As weeks went on, my hunger to be a manager was growing, something inside me liked the fact of rejection so it would push me to keep going and prove people wrong.

I was offered a interview at a very very interesting club, higher than what I had previously been applying for. Struggling in the league, an absolute gem of a club which can be restored back to their best with a few adjustments, I had done my research on the club before I went into the interview and wanted to show how much I wanted this job and wanted to show my capabilities which I could offer at the expense of the old manager.

I had a new suit for a big interview as making that first impression is always key, I wanted him to know i'm a witty, sharp and new manager which people will raise an eyebrow and ask who is that? Someone who you would think you could rely on. 11:00 am, Monday morning 22nd September 2014 my time of the interview, I left the house quite nervous yet very confident. I was greeted by the chairman of this prestigious football club and was invited into his office. He poured me a glass of water and then the conversation started flowing..

Chairman: So Mr Garner, I have invited you here today for the potential role of the manager of my football club, at just 21 are you sure you could put up with the responsibility of handling the team and many players which have been in the game alot longer than you?

Me: I assure you that I can. Age shouldn't be a factor, I can offer you a new, fresh style of football which would be fast, direct attacking football which previously watching the past few games of the club I see they have been very slow in the transition from defence to attack. This being one of the reason which I feel the club are languishing where they are at the minute, I believe I can change that. The fans won't come to watch boring football and when the results are not coming in, its a bad formula.

Chairman: I'm impressed that you have been watching our previous games and have done alot of research. Knowing our current position in the league, where do you believe you can end up finishing at the end of the season although 11 games have already gone?

Me: I would like to think we may just end up challenging for the play-offs in the end, 11 games and 33 points have been available which the team havn't capitalized on so winning the league would be far too unrealistic this season. But with a good run of results and the right attitude I don't think this would be a unrealistic target looking at the size of the club.

Chairman: You have given the right answers to me and although I know you've never been given the chance at this level before, we cannot perform worse than what we have been doing this season. I'll give you a deal till the end of the season and we will unveil you as manager tomorrow and announce it to the press. I wish you the best of luck for the season and hope we work together for a long time.

Garner Announced as manager of Bristol Rovers

Following tough campaigns of relegation from League 1 in 2011 and then relegation in 2013 from League Two, Bristol Rovers are a mammoth of a team with a 11,626 stadium where the average stadium in the Vanarama Conference is 5,000. The club are struggling this season as it seems the decay kept from last season but I will cut it out and restore the club.

View attachment 330360

The club are in the relegation places and was predicted to finish 2nd during Pre-season. Only won 1 in 11 shows that there is something wrong. I will spot the errors and cut them out immediately. We begin our campaign with me at the helm with a game against Southport. A team who are a place above us in the league and not doing the best themselves, a real opportunity for us to go there and get three points.

September

After arriving late September, I've been taking the team for training and focused on a new tactic for us. I want us to be more defensively solid as looking at previous results they have only been losing by the odd goal and have been unlucky in some matches, I want us to be dynamic in attacks and counter teams when they are attacking at pace. In training we have been practicing counter-attacking play. I have been impressed with a few individuals who I think will be key for us this season:

Jamie White: He arrived from Salisbury in the summer and came with an impressive pedigree of 87 goals in the past 101 games which is nearly a goal a game ratio. He looks sharp on the training field to me and like he wants to impress me, but in previous games he has looked bedrift of confidence and has only managed 1 goal in 8 games so far this season.

Rashid Yussuff: A tall, powerful and versatile player who has caught my eye today. He will be key for my side this year and will look to drive forward through him. Could be a real handful for teams and an absolute unit for the side.

Steve Mildenhall: A goalkeeper of the highest quality. Never played outside the football league during his career and we will start from the back with our keeper. He will be the vocal point between the sticks.

What a turnaround. We was fantastic in my first game in charge, the change of formation seems to have acted a treat. We went into the game with a new lease of life and told the players to play their own game and forget about our current position. An excellent performance today capped with a clean sheet, something which you need to win games. I'm very proud and want to build on this result for our next game against Eastleigh.

Sluggish first half with no team taking control of the game and 45 minutes of football where not many chances at all was produced but all game was in midfield. We came back after half time with all guns blazing and took the game to Eastleigh who wasn't prepared for it. Although we won by a three goal margin, my credit goes to the defence who was again, excellent for the second game on the trot and we have kept back to back clean sheets. Onto next month.

League Table will be updated next month.

I brought in two loanees to buffer up the squad and keep people on their toes, Hessenthaler is a bright young prospect who will get games with us and provide us with an extra option in a packed midfield. Sandell is a quality player who hasn't been given the time at Newport but was in the Vanarama Team of the Year last year. Both players provide us with excellent options for the squad.

Dover came here with one intention, to park the bus and get a credible away point and their game worked. Better things to take from the game was that after our two games, teams know we are not there to be beaten now and another successive clean sheet. We know we can't win every game we play but we keep plugging away and start again next game.

Excellent result and another win, only criticism would be of the sloppy nature in which we conceded the last goal, I can see where the defensive frailties was beforehand and we must not slip into that pattern like they was at the start of the season. I don't want to put a dampener on the result but things can turn around very quickly in football. I'm glad to see a variety of scorers on the sheet today which shows we have goals all throughout the team.

A test of our character today as it was the first time since I took over we trailed in a game. We went into half time losing, but I told my players to keep playing their game as the goal was from a set-piece and we was playing good football. We drew level fifteen minutes after the break and in the final 10 minutes we stole two late goals to claim all the points. A special mention to Jordan Richards, the right back provided all three goals and had an amazing game today

My first defeat as Bristol manager is one to remember. A fantastic game for the paying spectators as they got value for money, but as a defensive point of view we was terrible and should never be conceding five goals. This is something which I base my philosophies on. I don't want to go on about a defeat, our first in 8 isn't a bad way too go.

So, after the news of last year I stormed into the boardroom and demanded answers. Over an average of more than two points a game, still in every cup which we have been involved in and constantly rising in the league. I explained how that the club was good to offer me this opportunity but there has been plenty of interest from other teams in me but I've brushed it off to focus on the club. Maybe now I will listen to offers elsewhere but I feel I owe the fans due to their loyalty to me. It's safe to say I slammed the door shut on my way out and said to the chairman: '******* make sure you know what you are doing, you could ruin this club quite easily.'

What a way to start off this month, me out of everyone is nervous but I won't let it show to my players or to the fans, it's my first season as a manager and considering we was lurking near relegation to be in a place like this is unbelievable for me and the club, lets take it one game at a time.

Vanarama Conference
Monday 6th April 2015

Aggborough

Kiddiminster 5 - 3 Bristol Rovers
McChrystal (19'), Taylor (28'), Harrison (45')

MOTM: Josh O'Keefe

Heartbroken. Let teams back into the race, we must go again.

Vanarama Conference
Saturday 11th April 2015
The Memorial Stadium

Bristol Rovers 2 - 2 Southport
Parkes (47'), Harrison (50')

MOTM: Luke George

We may have let it slip with one game to go, we have fallen out of the play-off places but we can still get back in on the last day of the season provided results go our way. It will be devastating should we miss out on the play-offs after a successful season after I took charge. Only next game will decide this.

Vanarama Conference
Saturday 25th April 2015
The Memorial Stadium

Bristol Rovers 5 - 3 Alfreton
Taylor (14', 56', 59'), Parkes (64'), White (72')

MOTM: Matty Taylor

We've held our side of the bargain but how how other results gone for us? We are anxious after full time and a lovely hat-trick from Matty Taylor who was perfect for us today and walks off with a match ball... The final league table remains below.

WE ARE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS WHERE LINCOLN CITY AWAIT US.

Playoff Semi Final First Leg

Bristol Rovers 2 - 1 Lincoln City
White (48', 52')

MOTM: Jamie White

How we havn't won by 4 or 5 is beyond me we made soooooo many chances and hope that we are not left to regret this in the second leg against Lincoln as we could of put the game out of sight. Still we take the positives that we have an advantage going into the game and Jamie White has his ever present scoring boots on.

Playoff Semi Final Second Leg

Lincoln City 1 - 2 Bristol Rovers (2-4 agg)
White (13', 80')

MOTM: Jamie White

There it is sports fans!!!!!! Another Jamie White brace takes us to Wembley which Woking await us. What a season we have had. Now it all remains on one game. Will we do it and defy the odds from when I took over? Time will only tell..

Wembley, London
90,000 Capacity

Only dreams could imagine this, less than a year ago here I was working in a cocktail bar and now here I am managing my team at Wembley, the threatre of dreams. The lads have deserved this and have worked hard for it and no matter the result we will hold our heads high. What a season, hosting Man Utd in the FA Cup and coming dramatically close to holding them aswell, rising from the depths to the Play-off final. Bristol are too big of a club for this division and don't deserve to be here at all. Next we will see the match.

Woking 1 - 1 Bristol Rovers

Richards (89')

MOTM: Lee Brown

Full time, that's it and extra time has passed aswell. A last minute equalizer which when it seemed that we was going to spend another season in this division but a fantastic goal from young Jordan Richards which sent Wembley crazy and now we are facing the drama of penalties where people can be heroes in a single kick or single save..

First the coin is tossed, we win it and choose to have the first penalty and the spot kickers have been chosen by both teams in order....

Outrageous. Unbelievable. Magic.

When the board threatened to sack me, who delivered?
This is for the fans and past and present of the club. I've worked hard with this team and we have achieved. Thankyou for following my first season below are some awards which my team have been involved in.

Top Goalscorer - Jamie White: The striker has contributed 32 goals in the league and 38 overall but picks up the Vanarama Golden boot this year and has deserved it more than ever, been our key marksman this year and a pleasure to manager.

Player of the Season - Yannick Bastos: The Winger has won the votes of other players and managers as he was awarded with this at the ceremony and after 10 goals and 15 assists its easy to see why. A fantastic young Dutchman with a big future in the game.

My Player of the Season - Jordan Richards: With 3 goals and 19 assists from right back this young man deserved the award from me and i'll be busting my gut to get him back next year. Hartlepool might not want to part but I will do my utter best to get him back here.

Fantastic turn around mate (and amazing FA Cup run), looking forward to seeing how you get on next season!
