Lars Lagerback steps down

images

We are live from Abuja, Nigeria, where Lars Lagerback has stepped down following a row with president Goodluck Jonathan. Obviously there was no Good luck for him after he demanded a wage increase which Jonathan wasn't prepared to give him. The Nigerian FA will now be looking for a successor to Mr. Lagerback.

Joseph Yobo has made a plead for the squad to his fellow teammates to stick together through the search for a new manager. He's quoted

Waring has gone with the big names for the games, but missing two key players, Enyeama and Yakubu. The strike force is among the best area of the team, while the central midfield area and central defence are also strong. He's also giving Taiwo a call up, the young Marseille left back who could lead Nigeria teams in future years. With this squad it looks likely Waring will field a 4-1-2-3 formation, which will be confirmed later this week

Notable absentees include Vincent Enyeama and Yakubu, who are both unavailable through injury.

Nigeria demolish Botswana
Pompey striker John Utaka was named man of the match after his solid performance in which he finished the game with 2 goals

Centre back O. Apam and Lokomotiv Moscow sub Peter Odemwingie both got the other 2 goals in a game Nigeria were in full control of. This is the side used to face Botswana

Waring went for 3 up top with lots of pace and experience. The midfield consisted of 3 players who all play their football in England, Mikel with Chelsea was the defensive rock of the team, Olofinjana from Wolves partnered Fulham's Dickson Etuhu to also top off a strong midfield. However, he went with 2 full backs who would usually lose their places to Taiwo and Odiah, but Waring wanted to see how they turned out

Waring has recalled 2 influencial players, Vincent Enyeama, the ex H. Tel Aviv goalkeeper, and Yakubu, the Everton striker. Apam and Yakubu are not fully fit, however, and Waring may be looking to improve their fitness for future games. It is the same midfield included for the Botswana game, and Babayaro has been dropped following a recent illness. Peter Odemwingie gets another chance to show his metal after his goal against Botswana, and Greg Etafia keeps his 3rd choice keeper spot while Austin Ejide is dropped to make way for Vincent Enyeama.

Thrilling game between two African hopefuls
After a thrilling encounter between Nigeria and Tunisia, which saw a missed penalty and a last minute winner, Real Madrid man Chinedu Obasi stole the show. Obasi put in an impressive performance which saw him score the winning goal in the last minute of injury time. The win moved Nigeria from 2nd to 1st in the World Cup qualifiers, which will significantly boost them since they have their rivals out of the way in the group, and that win moved Nigeria to 31st in the FIFA World Rankings.

Nigeria thrash Mozambique
Nigeria beat Mozambique 4-1 infront of just under 58300 fans in the Abuja Stadium to take one step closer to South Africa. In a game they dominated, both Everton men Yobo and Yakubu got 2 of the goals, whereas Real Madrid front man Obasi and Chelsea's anchor man Mikel got the other 2. Arguably Mozambique's best player, Mate Simao, was left frustrated by his teammates 'lack of effort', in a game he gave his all into. Nigeria are 1 point clear of Tunisia, so need a win to guarentee a place in the World Cup

Victor Obinna receives his 2nd call up by Chris Waring after being dropped, and although Taiwo is considered fit, he isn't considered fit enough by the Nigeria manager who leaves him out of the team to face Kenya

Kenya 0-2 Nigeria
Nigeria have secured their place in South Africa's World Cup 2010 after grabbing a well earned victory over Kenya, and although the result isn't that convincing, it was definitely one of the most convincing games of Nigeria under Chris Waring. Nigeria battled well against Kenya, going 1-0 up thanks to a Seyi Olofinjana goal 10 minutes before half time, and 10 minutes after half time they made it 2 with half time sub Peter Odemwingie. After 65 minutes Inter Milan's central midfielder, McDonald Mariga, was given a red after a second bookable offence, and the game was all but over for Kenya.

Nigeria have been drawn against tough opposition in the form of Morocco, Tunisia and FIFA World Cup hosts South Africa. Nigeria will play World Cup Qualifying rivals Tunisia, and there will be no love lost between the sides since Nigeria knocked them out. Morocco will also provide stern opposition as will South Africa

Good start, and you should be able to qualify from that group.

Thanks guys

Managers thoughts
Our World Cup group is very hard, but I feel we can definitely get through. Spain will always be tough to beat, especially since they are first game, but I feel we can beat Japan by a few goals and possibly scrape victory against Serbia. I'm looking to get to the Semi Finals atleast in the African Cup of Nations, and getting to the Second Round of the World Cup would be fantastic
