Just caught up on this and **** yeah this is my type of story, you've got Walsall in the 4th round of the FA Cup a few years back by jobbing to them (How are they doing by the by?) and my Dad works for a company from Frankfurt so you're doing miracles with Eintrecht (sp) Frankfurt is making this top class.

A move to Spurs would be great. As long as you get European football each season you always get big transfer budgets as well!

Tottenham would be a decent move!

I'd stay at Frankfurt if I was you, although that's probably due to a combination of not enjoying managing in the Premier League and wanting to see you topple Bayern!

Ah well it seems like I'm going to disappoint some and make others happy. I'm at work now so can't do a full update but I'll just drop this little teaser,

You are such a tease! Quit your job & update us! :P

Haha - my wife, who is still on maternity leave after the birth of our second child, would literally kill me if I quit. Not even joking, I've got a reasonable life insurance policy so she'd just have to make it look like an accident.

Hahaha, I just burst out laughing at that! ^^^

Thankfully I am worthless either way, my missus would not need the encouragement! :P

Paul Barry? Are you sure that's not the chuckle brothers combined into one?! Having said that, would Spurs very well...

I had to google who the Chuckle Brothers were :)

I'd say even they would be better than Daniel Levy!!

Season 8 – February Roundup

Game 32 – Dortmund (a)

We battled hard here and took the lead when Garcia timed his run onto a Sauter through ball perfectly and slid the ball under the keeper to give us a one nil lead. From there the game dissolved in the referee show. First there appeared to be a handball in the leadup to the Werner goal and then Rues was inexplicably considered onside when he scored their second. This all came after Sauter had been forced from the field after a horror challenge in the 20th minute that didn’t even warrant a card. Dortmund were playing like a pack of thugs and worse was to come as Hummels ran past the ball in the 50th minute and shoulder barged Correa into the advertising hoardings. We knew something was wrong immediately as he clutched his left arm – it was on the other side of the field but I was hopeful it was just a cut. Wrong, fractured arm and out now for a month. This protectionist **** from the German referees afraid to see someone challenge their darlings in Bayern and Dortmund is beyond a joke.

Game 33 – Bochum (h)

I had fed it, absolutely fed it to the referees in the media after the last game so it wasn’t surprising to see Kinsombi pick up a yellow for dissent as early as the 9th minute. Apparently in Germany it’s ok to maim the opposition but should you so much as turn away in disgust at a refereeing decision then that’s a yellow… Thankfully though Stendera and Grealish played very well in this one and combined well for 2 of our 3 goals, the other Stendera scored from a rebound from an Iheanacho shot. He should have had himself a hat trick as well but he saw his penalty saved in the 15th minute. This was a good win – it was also a good way to sign off. The guys had heard in the media of my pursuit of the Tottenham job so when I kept them back after the game I could tell they were expecting the worst.

View attachment 249116

Everyone understood where I was coming from. I was a lad who’d grown up on the eastern fringes of London a mere 25 odd miles, as the crow flies, from White Hart Lane. When I’d been a schoolboy on the books at Charlton the shadows of Tottenham and Arsenal always loomed large over us and it was a dream of mine to play for one of them at the highest level. I never got that opportunity but now I could manage one of them. My parents were still in the area, having moved from Gravesend to the more affluent area of Sevenoaks after I’d purchased them a property there, and would still be well within driving distance so it will be great, although they have been able to watch my teams on many occasions, to now be able to do so with ease regularly.

View attachment 249115

The guys also knew that I had always had a hard time getting them their dues. The transfer budget allowed was always a bugbear of mine but just as much so was the lack of support in the form of a decent wage budget. We had an extremely healthy financial position at Frankfurt but we had been forced to give concession after concession when negotiating contracts to get people to sign and it had come back to bite us due to the pitiful wages allowed. I still dream of Boga in this squad and feel we would be far closer to Bayern with him. Not only do the guys understand that the wage budget situation means we are effectively fighting Bayern with one arm tied behind our back but they know this is also limiting their earning power so they are just as displeased.

View attachment 249114

After telling the guys personally I also sat down with the Coaching staff and shared one last round of drinks with them. They knew better than anyone how we had leveraged everything we could to catch Bayern and without substantial investment it is just never going to happen. After packing my bags and leaving for the airport I was checking my phone and Bild was reporting that half my coaching staff, including assistant Johan Malby, had quit in disgust at some of the things the Board has said after I left. Love me some loyal soldiers so if I’m ever in need of some quality coaches these guys will be top of my list!

View attachment 249113

To close the loop on the Frankfurt chapter of my story the Frankfurt Board decided to replace me with Copenhagen boss Leon Andreasen. I don’t know him personally and he’s had a little bit of recent success with them but this smacks of another cheap option taken by the Frankfurt Board – hey I was one so I really can’t talk but. I mean, I wish him all the success in the world and Frankfurt the town will always hold a special place in my heart but you can’t tell me there weren’t better candidates for an opening at a team that has just finished 3rd in the Bundesliga, played in the Champions League and is on course for a top 2 finish this season with Champions League the next season – come on! They only paid 85k in compensation for him after receiving in excess of 4 times that much for me and the club is projected to have a bank balance of over 50 million dollars at the end of the season!!!

Tottenham Roundup

During my time as a coach Tottenham have typically been the ‘nearly men’ always there or thereabouts but not ever really taking out the top prize it has been seven years since they last took out a trophy. I have been brought in to rectify this and if I have my way that will happen this season – we are still in the FA Cup and the Europa League and, although I win to at least meet the stated objective of mid table I feel we should be able to do that with ease so I will have a focus on these competitions.

View attachment 249080

The facilities at Tottenham as also better than Frankfurt’s which is saying something as Frankfurts weren’t too shabby at all. The “Hotspur Way” Training Centre was opened in 2013 and has been built on 77 acres and is located on Hotspur Way, Enfield. It is the home of the Club's First Team and Academy and is recognised as one of the best in Europe.

The state-of-the-art facility - which includes a covered artificial pitch, world-class player preparation areas, pool and hydrotherapy complex, altitude room, large-scale gymnasium and specialist sports rehabilitation suites - will support the Club's ambitions to attract, develop and retain the highest quality talent.

There are 15 grass pitches across the site including four dedicated solely for First Team Training and one and a half artificial outdoor pitches with floodlighting. The First Team Match pitch is built to exactly the same specification as the pitch at White Hart Lane.

View attachment 249079

In addition the club moved to the “New White Hart Lane” stadium in 2018. It is a fully owned 56,250 seater stadium. There is also a very healthy 20 million pound a year stadium sponsorship deal on it for some time yet. Despite their relatively poor performance on the pitch this season everything off it points to a club who want to battle with the best – it was this attitude that I could sense when I arrived for my interview that really attracted me to the club.

First Team Roundup

After meeting the Board and having a really good chat with them when I reiterated how much I want us to push right on for the title shortly I sat down with my assistant manager Jesus Perez and chatted about the first team squad. On the plane over from Frankfurt I had poured over DVD’s of their recent games and came up with the following first 11.

Goalkeeper

Hugo Lloris needs no introduction. The French veteran with 125 caps to his name is still playing at a very high level. He will hopefully be my rock at the back.

View attachment 249075

Backline

My fullbacks will be Kyle Walker and Elseid Hysaj. Both are solid fullbacks. Nothing outstanding though and both may be the subject to replacement shortly.

View attachment 249073

My central defensive pairing will feature Phil Jones and Lorenzo Rocchi. Jones is 30 now but I figure he has at least 2-3 seasons left in him at the highest level. Rocchi is young but already on the fringes of the Italian national team – he’s a real talent.

Central Midfield

Given I plan to field a 4-2-3-1 I hope to have Louis Reed in the middle. At only 24 he has his best days ahead of him but I will need him to graft in there beside Manu Trigueros. The Spaniard is effortless on the ball and I will need all his guile to play balls through for me attacking quarter.

Attacking Mids

Out left I plan to play the Portuguese international Bruma. He has the pace and skill to unlock even the best defence and my instructions to him will be simple – take them on!! Out wide right will be Erik Lemela. The Argentinian is a Spurs legend now and has all the tools to be one of the best in the world – I just have to coax it out of him. He expertise at free kicks is also something I am looking to exploit. In the middle is Christian Eriksen. The Dane, also 30, is the heartbeat of the side. Finding a way to unlock his Ballon D’or potential is my main challenge.

Striker

Up front there is no doubt who the main man is. Harry Kane will be expected to lead the line and gives us a tonne of options with how we want to play. Can fulfil the roles of targetman, advanced and complete forward as well as being able to drop into a false nine role if necessary. We will be looking to him to fire us back up the table.

Depth

Dele Alli is probably the best of our depth players. He can do a job in both central midfield and in the attacking midfield roles.

Love the new header mate!

Think Rhys can really do something at Spurs. Trophy cabinet, prepare to be filled!!!

At least it's not Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Stoke, Swansea, Queens Park Rangers, Wigan Athletic or Bristol City, I do not like those teams. (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool cause my dad supports Man U, Stoke cause they relegated us from the old Nationwide Division One 11 odd years ago, Swansea cause they beat Bradford City, QPR cause they're absolutely and utterly dog ***** and they're a mid table Championship side at best, Wigan cause they nicked our goal keeper so now I want the whole town of Wigan to go redundant because go burglarise someone else's team bub, don't nick our people and Bristol City cause they're dicks they beat us in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and they put 8 past us for no god **** reason, hope they get relegated and get heavily beat and stuff, that'll show them. I also dislike Mexico.) I mean it's only like the 6th best side from London in the Soccer League (Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Watford, Spurs). (In my mind Premier Ship is so business orientated and not football then it's Soccer not Football. Anyways, you're the 4th Aussie I know. (The other three I actually know.)

Cheers mate - hopefully I can make some real noise with them!

The Premier League is a daunting place! Watch out!

I have more of a comfort level with the Premiership as I am used to managing in it. Found Germany more daunting just because the gap to the big guys is so much more. In the premiership at least you get the big TV money to help bridge the gap.

Haha - I did well then to dodge a team you don't like!!! I must admit I'm a bit confused by the 6th best team in london statement. Were you meaning to say there that Spurs are only the 6th best team in London?

Front 4 looks very good and should cause back issues for many a back 4. Not convinced about the centre of midfield (Lacking a real ball winner) or the full back areas. Hopefully you can lead the club back up the league!

Scotty I swear when I read your reports on your save and see your comments that you and I share a very similar view on football! The first thing I looked at this squad and said was that there was no mongrel in the middle. I always play with one of those. Stay tuned though - I've already identified a few potential replacements, just have to wait until the end of the season to see what my budgets are for next year!

Game 34 - PSV (h)

Literally two days after landing at Gatwick I had my first fixture to be in charge of. We had PSV in the 2nd leg of our 2nd Round Europa League knockout tie. The guys had done a decent job in Eindhoven. I was also familiar with a number of their players from my time with FC Oss in the Eredivisie so in a lot of ways this was a nice game to start with. One thing that concerned me slightly was the tactics preparation. No matter what I tired to do with my preferred tactics nothing seemed to come naturally to these guys. It would be like starting at square one. It is crazy too as this squad is ready made for a 4-2-3-1...

To the game though. Harry Kane was still tired from his weekend Premier League fixture so we started off Radik Matusik up front in his stead and the Serb didn't disappoint - netting in the 23rd minute to make it so PSV then needed 2 goals to go through. They got one back just after half time due to a defensive mixup that allowed Smedsberg to get free in the box but the game should have been over shortly after but Bruma saw his penalty saved. PSV rarely really threatened though and we made sure of our progression in the 90th minute when substitute central defender Moncur got on the end of a free kick and slammed home. Good start.

Game 35 - West Brom (a)

Up next were the Baggies and despite being the away side we served it up to them. Kane got us ahead early powering home in the 6th minute before Assombalonga equalised against the run of play immediately after the break. I asked for more from the guys and got it in spades as first Bruma scored a peach, curling the ball into the far corner and then Alli sealed the deal after he had come on as a substitute. Nice win and good to start getting ourselves pointed in the right direction.

Game 36 - Feyenoord (a)

Marching on in the Europa League we had another dutch side Feyenoord up next. With the away leg first we set ourselves up in a relatively defensive shape and the tactic worked well, we had all the possession and all the shots and got the deserved win when Rocchi scored after a header from Jones had hit the post, then hit the Feyenoord keeper, then went back onto the post before Rocchi reacted quickest to prod home. Another nice win that makes it 3 wins from 3 this month with Tottenham and leaves me very positive about our future.

Sorry Gents but I forgot the table screenshot this month as I was to engrossed in all the change! It will be back next month - promise.

Game 37 - Liverpool (h)

My first real chance to test myself against one of the giants on English football. My Dad never liked Liverpool either so I really wanted to win here with him and Mum watching in the stands! We got off to a flyer Dele Alli had got the start as Eriksen was still buggered from the Feyenoord game and got a goal in the 25th minute. Of all the players I have here he is the one that has impressed me the most with his willingness to listen and learn. From there we dominated both possession and shots but it took until the 90th minute to seal the deal. Lemela got the goal as he pounced on a loose one in the box and placed it in. Great victory. 4 from 4 to start my Tottenham career and the media love is outrageous!

Game 38 - Feyenoord (h)

And just like that - thunk, way to fall. I have been trying and trying to get the guys playing a decent brand of football but I'm certain the previous manager had them playing long balls for dayz! Not to mention the defending! We've still got a lot of work to do evidently. Feyenoord dumped us out here. Admitedly after they were 3-1 up and we needed 2 goals we really had to chase so they were able to sit and counter but this wasn't good enough. I had really wanted to do well in this competition too. One thing I am noticing is that my first team squad is around 23 men deep with a good 5 or 6 of them completely not up to standard so my first choice 11 is getting very tired but without reasonable depth to rotate in I am being forced to play them. This is something I am really going to have to manage going forward...

View attachment 897335

Game 39 - Fulham (a)

We made the short trip across London here and were coasting after 43 mintues 2 up thanks to Bruma who helped himself to a double. Fatigue played another big role today as, when I began to sub in the inferior quality guys to rest my first choice players, they let me down and Fulham were able to score two themselves to earn a point. Very disappointed to have drawn after being two up!

Game 40 - Nottingham Forest (h)

I'm really happy to see Forest back in the Premiership. In my eyes this is where they belong. Thankfully though we were able to beat them here thanks to goal from Eriksen and than man Alli again. Yet again as we were required to make subs the people we brought on just aren't up to the standard and we conceded a late goal. I am going to have to rectify this depth issue over the summer.

Game 41 - QPR (a)

We are just over halfway through the month and this is already our 5th game. Couple that with a fatiguing squad, a FA cup semi final on the weekend and a rabid rivaly match away and you get, well, this... The less said the better really...

View attachment 248646

View attachment 248645
Game 42 - Watford (n)

This was our second real chance at silverware so I had rested some key players for the QPR match mindful of how tired they were. It worked a treat though as we dominated Watford who are having themselves a great season in the Premiership sitting above us in 8th spot. Eriksen calmed the nerves early racing onto a through ball and slotting home nicely before Kane made it a bit more comfortable just after half time with another thunderbolt. Praet, who had just returned from injury was brought off the bench and scored in the 75th minute to make the last 15 minutes very enjoyable. FA Cup Final - here we come!!!

View attachment 897335

Game 43 - Bournemouth (h)

And then this again. We rotated the squad where we could manage and the team played reasonably it must be said. They just lack the cohesiveness I want from them. In fairness this was our 7th game this month. We need a deeper squad to handle that workload.

Table Roundup

We've jumped 2 spots since I joined but are still a little way short of our mid table goal of 10th. In fairness I have sacrificed league results for the Cups so I can't complain too much.
