Painful looking pre season until you look at the opposition, you actually did quite well! Good luck for the upcoming season!

Cheers mate - In some of the games we played pretty well and held our own, in other we were lucky not to lose by 10!! I just hope some of the good form carries over into the season!

Season 2 August Roundup

Season 2 Game 1 – League 2, Morecambe (a)

The game started off and we were quickly on the ascendency. We were having almost 65% of the possession away from home, this was like a dream! We soon had the goal too as our dominance paid off when Mbabu made a nice run down the right and swung in a hard, low cross that was met by Wyke who had made a really well-timed front post run and he turned it in. The rest of the first half played out much the same. Although we were dominating possession we couldn’t find the goal and at half time I warned the side about Morecambe catching us out as they had a couple of decent chances towards the end of the first.

Early in the send half disaster struck as Brad Potts was sent off for his second bookable offence. Just not what the doctor ordered… Dropping a little bit deeper though we handled the threat posed by Morecambe with relative ease and in the 80th minute parity was restored in terms of bodies on the field when Mark Edgar received his marching orders for Morecambe. Callum Roberts had himself a debut to remember scoring his first goal for Carlisle after coming on as a substitute. We then had a third as Kearns got on the end of a deep cross and headed home well. Great start to the season!! Kevin Mbabu was rightfully adjudged to be man of the match for supplying two of our 3 goals. He is looking more like a first teamer rather than cover as I initially envisaged.

Season 2 Game 2 – Capital One Cup 1st round, Preston (h)

We welcomed League 1 side Preston to Brunton Park for this Capital One Cup tie. A decent cup run was another idea floated to help with our financial issues so we took this game very seriously. We still made a few changes as the game came so quickly on the back of the Morecambe one. We started really well again. Pushing Preston onto the back foot we got our goal in the 31st minute when Amoo was bundled over in the box. New loan signing Alex Henshall stepped up, looking to establish himself as a fan favorite from the outset, and made no mistake.

We had the ball in the net again on 40 minutes butit was called back as Amoo left slightly early. Going into the break at 1 nil I was very pleased and let the team know. Griffith picked up a yellow early in the second so he was brought off and Hammell brought on in his place. On the hour mark we were two ahead. Amoo was clattered again on the edge of the area but the ball fell nicely to Roberts and with referee Lewis smartly playing advantage Roberts drilled in a piledriver from 18 yards, great strike.

We didn’t have things all our way though. Kyel Reid pulled a goal back for Preston in the 87th minute. There were some nervy moments to endure as we ran the game out, more than once I needed to remind the team to concentrate, but we managed to get to the final whistle without conceding again. A great win for the club! Really happy with both performances this season. Afterward there was some questions about the penalty decision but seemed like a no brainer to me. Even Preston boss Jamie Carragher had to agree.

Season 2 Game 3 – League 2, Luton (h)

Again we had a very good start in this one, I am really enjoying how we are putting teams on the back foot from the word go. Unfortunately we couldn’t translate that pressure into goals in the first half and we went into the break locked up at nil all despite out shooting Luton 6 to 1. In the second we changed things up slighty and pushed on a little more.

On the hour mark we made some substitutions in an attempt to liven up our attack. On came Amoo and Dempsey in place of Wyke and Roberts. It didn’t have quite the desired effect as with ten minutes to go I asked the team to absolutely go for it and we were caught on the break in the 83rd minute by a Luton sucker punch. We didn’t give up though and Amoo dragged us level in the 2nd minute of injury time as he hit a low, raspy shot that made it way through a sea of legs before nestling in the bottom corner. It was nothing more than we deserved as a loss here would have been a travesty. Good character shown by the guys to keep playing to the final whistle and get something out of the game.

Season 2 Game 4 – League 2, Chesterfield (h)

We made a few changes to the side that drew with Luton as the games come thick and fast in league 2. We had the lead in the 15th minute when Kearns timed his run to perfection and got on the end of a Sweeney through ball to slide home our first and then in the 18th minute we were two to the good. Potts was scythed down in the area as he prepared to shoot and captain courageous Danny Grainger stepped up the take the resulting penalty making no mistake.

Potts had to come off at the start of the second and we took the opportunity t bring Kemen into the fray and set up more defensively. From there we saw the game out with ease. A solid 2 nil win. It’s only early days but the table makes for great reading as far as I am concerned! The only downer on the day is that Potts appears to have pulled his hammy and will miss a month or so.

Season 2 Game 5 – League 2, Dagenham and Redbridge (a)

Our 5th game this month saw us travel to Dagenham, we made a terrible start allowing Gnanduillet to head home with only 29 seconds gone. I was not happy. Even worse we were 2 down shortly after when Ellis Brown broke through one on one and finished sharply. Thankfully that seemed to break us from our slumber as Kearns got us a goal back in the 23rd minute heading home from close range. And it was that man Kearns again who got us level before the break finishing from a very acute angle on 37 mins.

Dempsey and Amoo were brought on again just after the interval to add some spark but our plans were thrown into disarray somewhat shortly after when Kemen had to come off injured. Kearns earned us a penalty in the 68th minute and although I thought he might take the opportunity to get his hattrick Grainger stepped up to take it and finished it well. Kearns had his hattrick not long after that hitting home a volley that Daggers keeper Cousin had no chance stopping. Really good comeback although I am a bit disappointed we let ourselves get two behind to start with.

Season 2 Game 6 – Capital One Cup 2nd round, Aston Villa (a)

Our reward for beating Preston was a trip to Villa Park in the Capital One Cup. Premiership v League 2 it was well and truly a mismatch on paper. Given the proximity to the weekend’s matches both sides made more than a couple of changes. Benteke fired Villa ahead in the 15th minute smashing home from close range but we were level almost immediately and Dempsey found some space in behind the Villa backline and slotted home an equalizer.

The game remained relatively even until the final stages when Villa scored again from close range, Agbonlahor this time. The game finished 2-1 but I was super proud of the team. We had come to a premiership side, who played an almost full strength side and matched them pound for pound. We had as many shots and significantly more possession so it wasn’t as if we had defended for our lives either. I told the guys I had no complaints today, their effort had been outstanding.

Season 2 Game 7 – League 2, Torquay (h)

Our final game this month was at home to Torquay. Again we started the better side and were unlucky not to go ahead inside 15 mintues when a Roberts volley was miraculously saved by Rice. After the break Amoo was brought on for Beck who was starting for the first time this season and the change appears to work well as we peppered their goal.

We were soon a goal down as Tonge broke through for Torquay and then two down shortly after that when Benyon fired home a volley against the run of play. An unfortunate way to end what had been a great month to that point. Still, we are in 4th spot having given ourselves a good platform to work from.

Decent start, tough Torquay result since you were the much better side. Enjoying this.

Cheers mate. We are going along pretty well. I really need a quality striker though and am trying to bring another in on loan but am struggling to bring anyone in with the wage restrictions!

Wage restrictions are a pain, especially when you can't tell the word to free up an extra like £300 per month on this glorious youngster or experienced God who'd easily win you the league!

Season 2 - September Roundup

Season 2 Game 8 –League 2, Stevenage (a)

Another fantastic start as we were ahead within 10 minutes. Callum Roberts getting on the end of a slide rule pass from Daniel Roberts. The lead didn’t last long though as Stevenage evened things up just before the half hour. Lee crashing onto a rebound and slotting home. Kearns had us back in front just before the break heading home a cross that drifted over all the Stevenage defenders.

The second half was a bit of a non-event as both team cancelled each other out. Another away win though so I am very pleased.

It also appears that my good work is starting to get noticed which is nice as well.

Season 2 Game 9 – League 2, Burton (h)

The game started off tight, Burton were clearly trying to keep things close on the road. We managed to penetrate their defense in the 28th minute as Hensell broke through and finished nicely into the far corner. From there we looked to be travelling pretty well, a goal to Burton just before half time changed that though. A neat one-two on the edge of the box broke split our central defensive pairing far too easily and the finish was simple from there. I wasn’t happy at half time and let the team know.

We started off the second half with a lot more vigor and took the lead in the 68th minute when Charlie Wyke got on the end of a long ball and looped his header in over the Burton keeper. We scored a third when Henshall again got in behind Burton’s defense and finished his one on one chance. A much better performance in the second half although our captain Grainger will have some explaining to do after needlessly getting himself sent off in injury time.

Season 2 Game 10 – League 2, Port Vale (a)

We didn’t start this one at all well going down within 4 minutes. A lazy clearance in defense went straight to Daniel and he made no mistake when presented with the opportunity. We pressed hard for an equalizer but weren’t playing very well at all and we missed a number of gilt-edged chances. Cranky Rhys made an appearance at the break.

2nd half started a little better as we began to get on top and we were back on level terms 5 minutes after the restart following a brilliant counter attack that started in our on half and finished with Henshall playing in Kearns who beat Neal with ease. We down again though in in the 63rd minute, an innocuous enough looking cross was played in and Curtis Good, under a little pressure from Nimely turned in into our goal. He was immediately substituted. Even though I repeatedly demanded more of our guy we couldn’t get the goal back despite more glorious opportunities… Not happy.

Season 2 Game 11 – League 2, Southend (h)

Next up we had 19th placed Southend. We are the stage now where I feel comfortable telling the team exactly what I expect, in this case a win. Potts was drafter back into the starting line up for this one and made an instant impact as we dominated the first half. Unfortunately though we had no goals to show for it.

Potts unfortunately picked up a knock early in the half but that allowed us to change things us slightly and the change appeared to work as we went ahead shortly after when Meppen-Walker got on the end of a corner and headed in from close range. We couldn’t hold the lead again though and allowed another soft goal with 20 to go as Blythe strode though our defense and hit a sweet strike n the turn that Gillespie couldn’t handle. Yet another game that we have dropped points that we should have won...

Season 2 Game 12 – League 2, Exeter (a)

Next up was Exeter who we owed from last season. Again we had great early chances and again we struggled to make them count. This lack of a clinical striker is killing me!! 64% possession and 8 shots to 3 at half time…

I told the guys to just keep it up and the result would come. It worked a treat as Henshall got on the end of a Kearns cross to send us one up. We then got a second in comical fashion as a aimless long ball was played in but Taylor, at full stretch with no one around, toe poked the ball past his own keeper. He wont be a popular lad in their dressing room after this one. We were coasting and three up when Good rose highest to meet a corner and send the ball past a despairing Hamon. 3 goals and 3 points which was nothing less than we deserved today. Much better.

Given that we left points on the board this month I was astounded to see us end it in first place but hey, I aint complaining. Almost a quarter of the way through too so we should start to see the wheat separate from the chaff soon. Lets hope we are wheat.

Thanks Pat - I've decided that I'm not going to renegotiate my contract until the last minute (runs out at the end of the season)and see if any offers come in.

Great start, top after ten. Impressive since the wage restrictions.

Cheers mate - Still got a few plans in place to free up a little bit of the wage budget. I still think we can win with the squad we've got but a gun striker would mean that we would do it much more easily!!

Modibo Sidibeeeee!

Actually he would fit in my system pretty well. I'll have to see if he is in my save given I don't have the South African league loaded though. Even Ben Hanrahan would be better than what I have now!! I've got my eye on a couple of older free transfers though that, if I can free up the space in the wage budget , would dominate in my system :)

Ben Hanrahan could cut it for sure! Sidibe in League 2 could be dangerous though! (H)

Season 2 - October Roundup

Season 2 Game 13 –League 2, AFC Wimbeldon(h)

What a start! 22 seconds in and the ball finds its way out to Alex Henshall, he takes a touch to steady himself and unleashes a shot that deflects in off the inside of the ‘Dons keeper Jalal’s leg. We remained the better side the entire first half and took a 2 goal lead in the 36th minute when Kearns headed home from a free kick.

Good was withdrawn just after the break as he had picked up a knock and Archiabld-Henville made his return from injury in his place. Amoo struggled up front again and Roberts was brought on in his place. I swear, if we had an even competent striker this season we would be miles out in front. Wimbeldon pulled a late goal back in the 85th minute but it was to be nothing more than a consolation as we ran out easy 2-1 winners.

Season 2 Game 14 – Johnstone’s Paint Trophy North 2nd Round, Bury (h)

Prior to this game some spring cleaning took place. I had attempted to move them on by transfer listing them but as there was no takers Antony Sweeney, Mark Beck, Steven Rigg and Nathan Buddle were all released via free transfer. I really didn’t want the extra expense of buying out their contracts but as they were eating wage budget and not playing drastic measures had to be taken. In their place came in 48 cap Scottish veteran James McFadden. McFadden isn’t as sharp as he used to be but I’m not too worried as I see the former Everton man as the perfect ‘false 9’ in my system linking the attack with the midfield.

Wholesale changes were made for this cup tie against the side who sit in 16th position in League 1 but it didn’t affect our performance too much. We took the lead in the 26th minute as Bury defender Martin, in attempting to close down a shot, deflected the ball in past his own keeper. The game was level 10 minutes after the restart as Hope fired home for Bury. We took the opportunity to get McFadden some game time as his fitness isn’t where it needs to be. The game ended up going to a penalty shoot out. Bury saw their first kick saved and we didn’t miss so we march on to the next round.

Season 2 Game 15 – League 2, Tramere (a)

We were without a number of player as they were either away on international duty or injured, not that you would have known it with our start, Henshall put us ahead after 4 minutes with a nice placed shot. Tranmere played their way back into the game and drew level when awarded a penalty that was converted by the man with the best name in history, Max Power. We were ahead again shortly after as McFadden picked up his first goal for Carlisle but that lead too wouldn’t last long as Power scored his and Tranmere’s second.

We started off the second half the better side and missed a really good opportunity when Potts could only fire against the bar when played through one on one by McFadden. Thankfully though we scored our third goal not long after when he got to the rebound from a McFadden shot the quickest and fired home to grab us the three points. A good away win against the 2nd placed side in the league. McFadden picking up a man of the match award in his first start was very, very pleasing.

Season 2 Game 16 – League 2, Cambridge (h)

Another fast start, this time it was Dicker who ran onto a Henshall cross at full speed and powered his header home to send us one up. We had our second just before the break when Potts worked himself a yard of space on the edge of the box and finished nicely. The only sour note in the first half was when Mbabu had to come off injured, Archibald-Henville was brought on in his place.

McFadden was looking tired not long after the restart so I asked Amoo to start warming up and as I got ready to make the change McFadden gave the fans something to remember for the day with a smashing long shot from 25+ yards out to give us a 3 goal lead. He has almost already paid for himself. Amoo made a nice run to get on the end of a Potts through ball to make it 4 nil and from there we ran the game out with ease. Great win.

Season 2 Game 17 – League 2, Newport County (a)

A few changes for this one with the game coming so soon after the Cambridge one. One of the players brought in, Dempsey, played the corner in for our first goal with Kearns hitting it first time on the volley to send us one up, a lead we held until the break.

Newport scored soon after the break though with Gillespie at fault, spilling the ball over the line. They scored their second on the hour mark as Wilmott broke through and fired in across Gillespie. That was the catalyst for us to attack with renewed vigor and Roberts brought us level in the 74th minute after some good lead up work from Amoo who has started this one in McFadden’s place. We pressed for a winner but there was none forthcoming. An unfortunate draw but it is far from the end of the world.

View attachment 267583

Season 2 Game 18 – League 2, Accrington (h)

We had started this one really well again but it took until the 40th minute for us to take the lead, Symington scoring from a direct free kick. We really should have been more ahead as we had been by far the better side in the first.

The second started in much the same fashion. McFadden picked up a slight knock so we protected him and subbed on Roberts. Despite having over 20 shots for the game we couldn’t extend our lead. No matter though, we got the 3 points and that’s all I’m concerned with right now.

View attachment 267582

Season 2 Game 19 – League 2, Northampton (a)

Fast starts are becoming a theme for this side and we were ahead less than 1 minute in again. Amoo reacted quickest and pounced on a rebound from a Dicker shot to give us the early goal. We held Northampton without a shot in the first half but early in the second they broke through, Intima with the goal. They weren’t level long though as Amoo got n the end of another through ball and slid home his, and our, second.

Symington smashed ina long range free kick to give us a 2 goal cushion but Northampton to their credit didn’t give up draggin a goal back in the 80th minute. 2 mintues later though the game was over as my wingers Kearns and Henshall combined for Henshall to smack home from close range. 4-2 and game over.

We now sit 3 clear at the top of the table and 8 point clear in the race for automatic promotion. I really want to win the league though to boost my profile. Speaking of profile boosting, I won the manager of the month award for October also!

Great stuff, keep it up! You could pick up a league winners medal here!

5 wins out of 6 - been a great month!

McFadden's signing on a free transfer looks a nice deal. He'll add some top division experience. :)

McFadden is a kingggggggggggggg, not a Sidibe or Hanrahan but very versatile and experienced.

Thanks mate. I'm pretty confident that we will win it this season. Even when we have dropped points we have been the better side and we've also beaten 2 teams from leagues above us in the cups so far.

Should have been 6 out of 6!! What can I say, I'm a greedy man!! :D

I couldn't believe it when his name appeared on the 'realistic transfers' list for free transfers. Would have thought for sure a lower Championship or League 1 side could use a player of his quality and offered him a lot more in the way of wages than I could!
