No CJ Lippo in my squad though! I also had an interview at Volendam but they overlooked me so I'll be wanting to stick it to them!!

Not wrong - should see if any of the Utrecht boys are available on loan!

That's an idea.

I always used to have a "sign an Aussie policy" but sadly it seems Manuel does not. :(

You never know though.

Season 3 - Preseason Roundup

We played very well in all our preseason games. To be honest though I'm not sure they are the best gauge of where we are as a team against our Jupiler League rivals as they all seemed to be of inferior quality. I am also a little bit worried that we are not quite as up to speed as I would like us to be in terms of the tactic I would like to play. Given the abundance of winger and central midfielders in the squad I will be looking to play a similar 4-3-3 to the one I ran at Carlisle that was successful for me.

We managed to bring in a few players in the offseason. I am especially hopeful that the former Ajax man Keskin will become a key player for us but he is working his way back from a niggle so he wont see significant action in the first couple of weeks.

August Roundup

Season 3 Game 1 – Jupiler League, Jong FC Twente (a)

I was pretty nervous at the start of this one. I feel we have a really deep squad here at Oss but my concern is that it might not be up to Jupiler league standard. We started off well here though, dominating possession and we were ahead in the 19th minute thanks to a Dammers long range effort that the keeper, despite getting his hands to the ball, couldn’t keep out. We were soon two ahead as Wildschut found Emilsson and his low driven finish nestled nicely in the far corner, good goal.

We would go into the break 3 up as Hersi would complete a flowing counter attack by curling an exquisite first time effort around Verrips in the Jong Twente goal. At half time I was actually starting to feel bad for the young Twente boys and we continued our dominance in the second half getting our fourth and final goal though Wildschut as he collected his own rebound and fired into an empty net. 63% possession away from home playing a tactic I wouldn’t even consider us ‘competent’ in – great stuff. Wildschut had a fantastic game for us, I will be looking to him for even more now!

Season 3 Game 2 – Jupiler League, Heracles (h)

I figured, as you do, that seeing as I had now won a competitive game for Oss that they could fund a coaching course for me so I went in to see the Chairman and me reasons for leaving Carlisle were validated immediately. They had no qualms about me going on the course at all and it made my blood boil a bit to see that the cost was a paultry £600 – I dead set won League 2 for Carlisle and they argued they couldn’t afford to send me on a course that cost 600 quid…

View attachment 265679

I entered the sheds prior to the Heracles game on that high note though pleased that I had now joined a club that seemed to actually care about my personal development as a manager and was quite positive in the pre match talk. It certainly seemed to have a good effect on the boys as we charged out of the gates against Heracles. Although it took until the 41st minute for us to take the lead we had been threatening up until then. Jansen got us started by heading home from a corner.

At the break I told the guys to just keep doing the same things and the goals would come and boy was I right. Wildschut continued his good form scoring with a placed shot in the 51st minute and when we had our third through Paul Kok who slid in at the back post after a Jansen flick on from a corner we never looked back. There was even time for Hersi to score from a free kick, getting some nice up and down on the ball from close range. Another fantastic performance and result. I don’t know if it is just that we haven’t played any of the hard teams as yet but I am already dreaming of promotion. Funnily the other side also with 6 points from the two games is Volendam who I also interviewed with – time will tell if they made the right choice in overlooking me.

Season 3 Game 3 – Jupiler League, Achilles’29 (a)

Achilles had lost one and won one coming into this game so I was expecting a little more of a test than our first two outings had proved. I shouldn’t have really worried as once the game settled we began to dominate possession and really should have been one or two up at the break.

After half time we continued our good play and took the lead through Hultermans as he snuck in at the back post to get on the end of a deep free kick. From there we really should have scored another two or three but some inspired keeping from the Achilles goalie kept them in it. As it was though we were never really troubled and made it 3 from 3. I am most pleased that this is our 3rd clean sheet in a row to start the season. Dammers did pick up a needless red card but the only person who will pay is him as we have good depth in that position so he might find it difficult to get his spot back in the side now.

Season 3 Game 4 – Jupiler League, De Graafschap (h)

Up next was De Graafschap and we started out a little more defensively than usual as I expected them to be a bigger test then what we have faced to date. And they proved to be so going ahead in the 3rd minute. From there we worked our way back into the game and were level on 12 minutes when Emilsson thundered one home.

After the break, sensing the game was there for the taking, we played our usual attacking game and began to dominate – maybe I just need to trust the guys more. We had our reward in the 75th minute as Falkenstein, who had come into the side to replace Dammers, got on the end of an Emilsson cross and finished from a very acute angle – great job taking his chance when he got it. From there we ran out the game to record a solid 2-1 win.

Season 3 Game 5 – Jupiler League, RKC (h)

On a short turnaround we hosted RKC next. The game started with us in the ascendency and we were unlucky not to be ahead on the half hour when Hersi’s long range effort was turned around the post. Disaster struck in the 35thminute when Bark evaded our marking at a corner and headed in unmarked at the near post.

Worse was to come in the second as Zanelli put RKC 2 up with a neat turn and volley on 59 minutes. We did claw one back in the 61st through Wildschut but once Appiah was sent off in the 82nd minute we rarely threatened. Our first WTF game of the season, we had 57% possession to 43% and 22 shots to 6…

Season 3 Game 6 – Jupiler League, Volendam (a)

1st v 2nd in this one so we were looking to gain the early bragging rights over Volendam. We had a terrible start when an overhit cross from Diakhaby somehow bounced in off our keeper Appels’ hands. It wasn’t even on target. Thankfully we were rescued by Hersi before the break as he scored another direct free kick.

Our job seemed to get easier on 68 minutes as Bakkenes was sent off for a second bookable offence but even though we pressed and pressed for a winner there was none forthcoming. In fact Volendam managed to sucker punch us with a 82nd winner through Resida. I guess I should look back on this as a learning experience in my young career as I should have been ok with the draw and not pushed on quite so much but right now I’m seething. We finish the month in 3rd position and the only 2 teams above us are the teams we have lost to.

Still a great start despite the last couple of results. That Hersi bloke played in the A-League for Wanderers I think? Lippo?

Correct Pat. Was with Perth this season. In the game he had just signed with Oss in the off season right before I took over.

Nice, Youssouf Hersi! Aussie connections anyway. How old is he now?

Very nice start! Who gets promotions in the Jupiler League? 1st + Play Offs?

Its actually very weird. Top team gets auto promoted. Then there are 8(?!) playoff spots. There are 4 'periods' throughout the season and at the end of the each of them the top team in guaranteed a playoff spot then I assume the remaining top 4 teams at the end of the season.

Crazy hey.

September Roundup

Season 3 Game 7 – Jupiler League, MVV (a)

Coming off the back of two losses we wanted to get a good start. Instead we found ourselves behind after 4 minutes – great… We quickly turned things around though and were level on 9 minutes when we won a penalty that Emilsson converted. The game itself was very tight and, being the away side, we dropped off in the second half looking for the draw but instead got the win when Hersi scored from yet another free kick in the 71st minute.

View attachment 265300

Season 3 Game 8 – Jupiler League, Den Bosch (a)

We got off to a scorching start when Koubemba scored after 2 minutes. From there we dropped off and looked to hit them on the counter. That resulted in them having more possession and shots but none really threatened and when Idrissi scored late in the 2nd half we weren’t troubled again.

Season 3 Game 9 – Dutch Cup 2nd rd, Volendam (a)

A chance for retribution here in the cup. Despite the closeness of the game we were far more clinical. A double to Koubemba and a goal from van den Ouweland sealed the game for us. Good result against an obvious rival to our league aspirations.

View attachment 265298

Season 3 Game 10 – Jupiler League, Sparta (h)

Domination. We had 29 shots to 1! It did take us until the 2nd half to open our account through Dammers but from there the floodgates opened. 3 more through Hersi, Falkenstein and Emilsson sealed the game. Probably our best result of the season considering Sparta were in the Eredivisie last season. Emilsson was outstanding here –a goal and 2 assists.

Season 3 Game 11 – Jupiler League, VVV (h)

A game which we probably didn’t deserve to lose. Injuries to strikers Koubemba and Emilsson left us light on up front and we lacked that cutting edge in front of goal. Fair play to VVV though, we’d ridden our luck early in the season and they had done so successfully here.

Season 3 Game 12 – Jupiler League, Roda JC (a)

An Appiah own goal put us in a hole here and it took us almost the entire game to dig ourselves out of it but we did with Wildschutt equalising in the 88th minute. A decent result away against a much larger club who used to be a fixture in the Eredivisie.

October Roundup

Season 3 Game 13 – Jupiler League, FC Eindhoven (h)

Prior to this one we got confirmation that as a result of our performances in the 1st period of this season we have guaranteed ourselves a spot in the playoffs at least this season.

View attachment 265290

Falkenstein, who has deputised in as my false 9 with our recent injuries, put us ahead before Hersi extended our lead just before half time. I have become a far more pragmatic manager in my time in the Netherlands and , whereas before I would have asked the team to push on an attempt to extend the lead, nowadays I have my team shutting up shop. We did so with reasonable effectiveness – we did concede a late goal but it was nothing more than a consolation for Eindhoven.

Season 3 Game 14 – Dutch Cup 3rd rd, Den Haag (h)

Amazing! Den Haag were positioned 13th in the Eredivisie coming into this game but we made a mockery of the presumed disparity in quality between the sides. Wildschut was exceptional here.

Season 3 Game 15 – Jupiler League, Jong Ajax (h)

Another fantastic performance from Wildschut here. That’s 7 goals in two games. He will no doubt be in the reckoning for player of the season when the awards roll around at the end of the year.

We nominally sit 2nd at the end of September but if we can win our game in hand we will be top. Great start for a team that, prior to the season, was picked by the media to finish dead last.

November Roundup

Season 3 Game 16 – Jupiler League, Excelsior (a)

Youssouf Hersi was the hero here, 2 goals and another from Dammers had us coasting but a late penalty to Excelsior made it a tense last few minutes. I have been really happy with our away form this season and this game was no exception.

Season 3 Game 17 – Jupiler League, Almare City (h)

This was way closer than it should have been. We struck the woodwork twice in the first half but got our reward in the 75th minute when Falkenstein squeezed a shot under the Almare City goalie who had been the player of the game till that point.

View attachment 265279

Season 3 Game 18 – Jupiler League, Helmond Sport (a)

1st v 2nd here and Helmond came playing for a draw and stole all 3. We can’t complain as we have employed a similar strategy with success also this season. We will want revenge in the return fixture.

View attachment 265276

Season 3 Game 19 – Jupiler League, Telstar (a)

Telstar were the opponents unfortunate to face us ready to avenge the Helmond result and we smashed them. Hultermans, Hersi, Wildschut and Falkenstein were the goal scorers in a total team effort. Wildschut though deserves special praise either assisting or scoring every goal today!

Season 3 Game 20 – Jupiler League, FC Emmen (h)

Really tight game against 5th placed Emmen. We got off to a flyer when Wilschut and Hersi put us 2 up after 12 minutes but from there Emmen came right back into the game and pulled a goal back in the 25th minute. From there I asked the team to sit and counter attack and, although we couldn’t get another goal, neither were we troubled too much by Emmen.

View attachment 265273

We sit on top by one point but 2nd placed Helmond have a game in hand so they could go top if they win that. It’s beginning to look like it will be between us, Helmond, VVV and Heracles for the title.

December Roundup

Season 3 Game 21 – Jupiler League, Heracles (a)

We were away at Heracles who sit in a playoff spot for this one so we were expecting it to be tough. We got off to a good start when Emilsson scored in the 28th minute and from there we were happy to sit off and pick our spots. Hercales didn’t seem all that intent on pushing on for an equaliser either strangely and we cancelled each other out for the remainder of the game and ran out 1 nil winners.

Season 3 Game 22 – Jupiler League, Jong PSV (a)

Another good away win here as we showed the young PSV squad how its done. After going ahead though a Koutemba solo effort we were never troubled and added goals from Wildschut and Hersi to round things off. Solid win.

View attachment 265252

Season 3 Game 23 – Jupiler League, Jong FC Twente (h)

After the Jong PSV game we then took on the FC Twente youngsters. We dominated this one from start to finish and the only disappointment was that it took us 80 mins to open the scoring. In truth though we were never trouble at the back and a win was always on the cards.

Season 3 Game 24 – Jupiler League, Achilles’29 (h)

Another game where our opposition came to the Frans Heeson Stadion looking for a draw. Thankfiully Emilsson had other ideas and he double saw us run out 2 nil victors. This game meant we had now won 6 in a row in the league, breaking the FC Oss record.

Season 3 Game 25 – Dutch Cup rd 4, NEC (a)

Everyone was expecting our cup round to end at the home ground of our parent club NEC. I think NEC might be coming in with some transfer offers for our players after this one!! Great performance as we went away and dominated another Eredivisie side.

View attachment 265248

We finish this month with a 5 point buffer. We will be looking to build on that after the winter break and advance as far as possible in the cup.
