Zanetti has 141 and will get 142 on Tuesday :P

enough with the zanetti comments :D he is incredable but sorry mate and im sure everyone else will agree but he is not in the league as Maldini. Only franz beckenbauer comes close.

Legend just doesn't seem enough. He has played for AC Milan his entire 25-year career and is subsequently the highest appearance maker for the club and for Serie A, His list of achievements seem never ending. In his remarkable career he has won seven Serie A titles, an Italian Cup, and an unbelievable five European Cups. He has appeared in eight finals of Europe's premier competition. The greatest defender of all time without a doubt.

also Lothar Matthaus has 150 caps for germany

As everyone knows 2 years ago the greatest defender of all time Paolo Maldini retired.

Having won 5 champions leagues and making over 1000 apps for club and country he has alomst become a myth..

My question is this

In modern football will there ever be anyone, or is it even possible, who can come close to matching his achievments. Is it possible that someone else can play at the top level for 25 years , constatly remain in the starting 11 from age 17 to 40 (unlike giggs) and win so many european titles ??

3 words and an apostrophe

I seriously doubt everyone else would agree.

And - again - you're mentioning team achievements. You can't say a player is better than another because his team won more or better trophies - in that case, any X choice world cup winning fullback would be better than either Maldini or Zanetti.

Paolo has nothing on Der Kaiser! Beckenbauer is the greatest defensive player the game has ever seen and it will be a long time before anybody challenges for that title.

In terms of players playing on until their old, Stanley Matthews, his career went from 1931 to 1964,
