2014 World Cup thread

What is good about Gerrard retiring? It was hardly a massive blunder against Uruguay and the whole world knows he's a Top class player

He didn't do anything in either game, other than play long passes down the flanks and gift Suarez a goal.

More importantly, he's one of those players who has clearly crumbled under the pressure of playing for England time and time again. There have been lots of reports about how Lampard and Gerrard spoke to the rest of the team about the soul crushing effect of losing and how it will haunt them throughout their careers. We need a clean break from that ****, which is what this WC was supposed to be about.

I'm not sure how thinking that makes me fickle though.

Absolutely not. Gerrard mis-timed a header, like you said a regular occurance. Had he not challenged the ball was going in that direction anyway. A mistake, not a critical mistake.

The main mistake came from Jagielka and Cahill not marking their man, just like 3 of the 4 goals we have conceded this world cup... Why on earth were the defence playing so high and leaving the best striker in the world all alone? Naivety or stupidity.

I am sorry mate, I have to disagree. You are essentially saying that if we took Gerrard out of the equation and let the ball continue on it's path uninhibited, it would have still fallen to Suarez who would have scored. That's really not true mate. Gerrard made a massive blunder. The defenders didn't keep a tight leash on Suarez. Mistakes all round and that's what makes it frustrating

Hopefully people will stop saying England lost to a good Italian side now and see England for what they really are. Poor!

Costa Rica executed a MUCH MUCH MUCH better tactical gameplan against Italy and they got the result.....

I keep hearing the same old bullshit we can't play high-preesure or anything because we don't have the players? Nonsense....

Costa Rica can do it but the fact is we don't have the ****** manager to do it...

Hodgson has had 2 years or more to implement the style or the gameplan's and he's done atrociously... I'm sorry but it really is a joke. Even funnier thing is he managed in Italy and still doesn't know how to effectively setup a gameplan like Costa Rica did to play against them.

Honestly our performance versus Italy was probably the best one I have seen from England in the Hodgson era and we still lost to a poor Italian side. That says it all really about how we have performed under Roy ... Really disappointing

To be fair to Hodgson, he has never been a tactical maestro. He is all about organizing teams and keeping them compact and then drilling it into them until it's second nature. He hasn't even managed that with England which is the disappointing part. No real alternatives to him either

Rather have Harry Redknapp.... Roy Hodgson didn't even earn himself to the job... he was absolutely **** at Liverpool.

Paul Schools sums it up perfectly ... Amateurish, Sunday League defending is to blame. Gerrard flicked on a long ball. It's worrying that its that easier to beat our defence

Scholes: "You can't blame Gerrard for Suarez's goal. Defenders didn't sense danger. The back four have been found out."

Worst manager in the history of the club, 37% win percentage at West Brom to then England Manager

What a weird game, this. Last 30 minutes Italy look completely disinterested. Almost seemed like the result was staged.

What do you mean they didn't sense danger? How are they supposed to 'sense' that the midfielder designed to shield them is going to **** up and totally mistime his header right into the danger zone? You are intent on absolving Gerrard of blame which is baffling

The only reason we are stuck with him is because the FA refused to buy Redknapp out of his Tottenham contract

Dinosaur outdated manager and we wonder why we're so bad.. Costa Rica can beat good teams with effective tactics/gameplan's against supposedly good teams.

What does Scholes mean? Laughable you are even asking that... Just sit back and think about it

Then think why Suarez was in the position he was... Because he sensed a flick on of some sort and the defenders didnt. It is basic defending to drop of from a goal kick to stop these things occuring

Gerrard, Lampard, Wilshere ETC, It doesn't matter. It was a poor header but the blame lies with the poor defence

Disappointed to hear the FA say Hodgson's job is safe. He's the 2nd highest paid manager at the world cup and he has failed miserably. I want to see Hoddle or Redknapp in for the Euro's.

I find it tough to blame Hodgson for our performances in the WC. Against Italy, we were good but very unlucky to come away with nothing. Against Uruguay, we were woeful but still would have come away with a point if it wasn't for another match-winning assist from Captain Slippy and some ****** defending subsequently

However, we got a decent group of youngsters coming through. I just don't think Hodgson is the right man to bring them into the England fold. He is such an uninspiring choice

Except guess what? The flick on came from Gerrard, the opposing player. Stop it mate, it's getting embarrassing
