FEBRUARY 2013

Pro League
Standard Liege 4 - 2 Germinal Beerschot (Witsel 2, Caio, Barbaric)
Barbaric starts his debut so al eyes on him but it was in attack where Liege started well. After 2 minutes, Witsel converted a Caio cross for 1-0. Liege were 2-0 up after 5 minutes when Mats Rits got in behind before pulling back to Caio to score. Francois pulled 1 back after 16 minutes to put GBA back in the match. Witsel scored his 10th goal of the season to make the lead 2 goals once again. Just after the half hour Wanyama headed GBA back into the game as they refuse to lay down. 10 minutes from the end debutant Barbaric scored after a Mangala header came off the bar to make it 4-2. This win puts Liege 5 points in front of GBA.

Pro League
Eupen 1 - 2 Standard Liege (Caio, Defour)
8 minutes into the match Caio hit the post as the visitors start brightly. The Brazilian was off the mark minutes later after a mazy run past 4 players from the half way line ended with a terrific placed shot past the keeper to make it 1-0. After 17 minutes Caio ran at the defence again before teeing up Defour who sent a rocket into the top corner, Liege 2 goals to the good. Paternotte got Eupen back in it with only 20 minutes on the clock. 5 minutes before half time Barbaric won a penalty but Witsel missed the kick, saved by the keeper. The excitement of the 1st half lead to scrappy, yellow card laden 2nd half but Standard get the points as Genk lose to Anderlect so just 9 points the difference now.

Pro League
Standard Liege 2 - 0 Club Brugge (Carcela 2)
A win for Liege would put them level on points with Brugge in 3rd so a proper 6 pointer in the title race. Mehdi Carcela is back from an injury lay-off and Liege have won all 5 of their games in 2013. With that 6 minutes into the match the returning Carcela was on the score sheet finishing classily side footed across the keeper. He doubled the lead in the 2nd half coming off the right wing to nod in a cross from the left. 5 minutes from time Carcela missed a penalty which would have got him his hat-trick.

Pro League
Charleroi 1 - 0 Standard Liege (No scorers)
Liege went 1-0 down on the hour in this one. Ederson with a header. Grozav had a brilliant chance to equalise but missed 2 minutes from the end. A poor derby defeat for Standard.

Europa League 1st K-O Round 1st Leg
Rubin 1 - 0 Standard Liege (No scorers)
Standard went behind after just 9 minutes when a shot from Martins was turned into his own net by Filipe. That was all Rubin needed for a 1-0 victory. 2 defeats on the spin for Liege.

Pro League
Standard Liege 3 - 0 STVV (Witsel 2, Caio)
Standard responded well after returning from Russia with defeat, Axel Witsel was on target after 31 minutes connecting with Caio’s cross. A minute before half time and controversy as Mendes da Silva was sent off and it was unclear what the referee had saw. On 70 minutes Witsel put in Caio to return the favour for the 1st goal and Caio went on to score. Witsel won and then scored a penalty to make it 3-0.

Europa League 1st K-O Round 2nd Leg
Standard Liege 2 - 0 Rubin (Carcela, Caio)
With the home support behind them Liege looked a lot better side than in the 1st leg and on 37 minutes they were level in the tie when Mehdi Carcela took down a lovely lofted pass from Mats Rits clinically finishing to put this tie on a knife edge. Standard were dangerous playing on the counter attack through out the match but with 20 minutes left they went for it and the goal they pushed for came on 84 minutes when Caio blasted in from the edge of the box. A sensational moment as they ground erupts. Standard survived late Russian pressure to book their place in the Europa League’s 2nd knock-out round. Complete elation, 2-1 on aggregate.

MARCH 2013

Pro League
Lokeren 0 - 2 Standard Liege (Filipe, Leye)
An ever outstanding Lokeren keeper Copa always plays well against Standard Liege. It usually takes something special or something from a yard out to score and as the scorer was Filipe you can guess how he scored it. Standard sealed the win 2 minutes from time when El Ghanassy’s cross came to the far post for substitute M’Baye Leye to tap in.

Belgian Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg
Standard Liege 3 - 0 STVV (Defour, Mendes, Caio)
The tempo was quick in the first 10 minutes of this match, Mehdi Carcela hitting the cross bar in that time before the 1st goal arriving from Defour on 18 minutes, curling past the keeper from 20 yards. Defour set up the 2nd goal from a corner with Mendes da Silva heading in. Just after the half time interval Steven Defour grabbed another assist sliding in Caio who finished. 3-0 now to the Pro League Champions. And that was the end of the scoring for the 1st leg.

Pro League
Standard Liege 1 - 0 Zulte Waregem (Carcela)
The last game of the regular season awaits these 2 sides and Zulte Waregem started better, hitting the upright in the 1st minute but it was Liege who took the lead after Benteke’s shot fizzed across the face of the goal before Carcela tapped in. After half time Carcela hit the bar before Benteke done the same thing 2 minutes later. Standard decided to defend the lead after that and the risky strategy from Saunt paid off as his men triumph by a goal to nil.

Europa League 2nd K-O Round 1st Leg
Stade Rennais 1 - 0 Standard Liege (No Scorers)
On paper these 2 sides shape up with around equal quality but Rennais in front of their home fans excited them when a Mandjeck shot hit the crossbar from 25 yards. Despite that Standard got through to half time at 0-0. The interval was a chance to regroup but Rennais came on strong again when a Sow free-kick came off the wall to Caceres who blasted against the post. Rennais’ dominance was showing and on 70 minutes they got their goal from a corner which was eventually turned in by Crisetig into his own net. The 1st leg ends with the French leading.

Europa League 2nd K-O Round 2nd Leg
Standard Liege 0 - 0 Stade Rennais (No Scorers)
Liege didn’t have the quality in this match to really get clean strikes on goal with Sow and Tetty in midfield, Rennais looked strong. Despite putting everyone up for the last 20 minutes Liege couldn’t find the net so an aggregate 1-0 win for Stade Rennais, Liege are out!

Belgian Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg
STVV 0 - 1 Standard Liege (Euvrard OG)
This game was in many respects already won for Liege but after dropping out the Europa League in mid-week Standard Liege just wanted to get back to the domestic competition. The game was of mediocre pace and after the hour Liege subbed off Carcela, Defour and Witsel to give them a rest. Ndongala debuted off the bench and he got the assist for Standard’s 4th goal in the tie. Euvrard with an OG for STVV. Filipe got sent off in the late stages for a 2nd yellow card but Liege were already in the final as it was party time in the away end.

Championship Group
Germinal Beerschot 0 - 2 Standard Liege (Witsel, Caio)
This has been a tricky fixture for Liege in the past but they started well with Witsel scoring after 8 minutes. The next goal didn’t come until 68th minute but it was a fine move when it came, Carcela down the right crossing perfectly for Caio to run on to and finish first time from 6 yards.

APRIL 2013

Championship Group
Standard Liege 1 - 0 Anderlecht (Rits)
Standard opted for an unfamiliar 4-2-3-1 today in the Clasico Belge Derby. After some pacey attacks in the 1st half the goal eventually arrived on the hour with Mats Rits (on as a half time sub) heading in a Carcela cross to complete a superb flowing counter attack move. 5 minutes from time Anderlecht looked like they would ****** an equaliser but a header came off the bar only for the ref to blow for a penalty which Tadic missed as Bolat dives to his right. An outstanding win for Liege which puts them just 3 points behind Genk who lead.

Championship Group
Club Brugge 1 - 0 Standard Liege (No Scorers)
A massive game for Liege with Genk next week. Liege created a few chances in the first half but wasted them. The 2nd half saw Ramos concede a penalty for the 2nd game in a row but this time Bolat couldn’t keep it out and Geraerts scored. News came through that Genk were drawing spurred on the away support but it didn’t get through to the players with all the chances falling to the wrong people as far as Standard were concerned. That makes the game against Genk next week a must win.

Championship Group
Standard Liege 1 - 2 Genk (Ramos)
Probably the biggest game in Saunt’s reign as Liege boss is this game. But it didn’t start well after 10 minutes when Renan Filipe headed in a corner. Vandenbroeck doubled the lead after 28 minutes as Liege’s title hopes disappear. But then a turning point in the game as Rits put in Caio on goal but Ogunjimi took him down and was sent off. Victor Ramos put his recent penalty errors behind him as he put Liege back in the game at 2-1. Liege missed a hat full that could have put them level but it’s a massive 3 points dropped.

Championship Group
Lierse 1 - 3 Standard Liege (Carcela 2, Caio)
Liege need to win all their remaining games if they’re to survive their title pursuit but a goal on 9 minutes from Carcela got them on their way. Carcela put Les Rouches 2-0 up with a deflected free-kick after half an hour. Caio was the next on the score sheet on 64 minutes with a super solo goal. Mathisen got 1 back in stoppage time but job done for Standard. Genk drew so Standard pull back from 7 points to just 5 with 5 games left.

Championship Group
Anderlecht 0 - 0 Standard Liege (No Scorers)
A frustrating match for both sides. The defences were the only winners in this game. Standard were the closest to taking all the points but Caio missed his chances along with Carcela and El Ghanassy.

Championship Group
Standard Liege 2 - 1 Germinal Beerschot (Witsel (P), Carcela)
This is the 1st of 2 games at home for Liege and they’re looking to take all 6 points. 2 minutes into the match they were in front, Axel Witsel squeezing a penalty past Kaminski. Benteke came on in the 2nd half and on 85 minutes he crossed for Carcela to seal the win. Rilke put GBA back into the game in stoppage time but Standard hold on to win. Elsewhere Genk drew with Anderlecht as Standard close the gap to just 3 points with 3 games remaining.

MAY 2013

Championship Group
Standard Liege 2 - 0 Club Brugge (Caio, Carcela)
Caio recently has been upset that the transfer for him to Sao Paulo was negotiated by the club. He has apologised to the Liege management to play and also committed to better his form and on 33 minutes, He put Standard 1-0 after a reverse pass from Carcela got him free in the area to shoot home. He then returned the favour for Carcela to score just 2 minutes later. Mendes went off with what looked like a serious injury so Barbaric might have to be forced to play just 6 days after returning to full training should everything go to schedule. 2-0 at half time and at GBA they were leading 2-1 over Pro League leaders Genk. Both scores remained the same at full time which means Standard move joint top with Genk up next. News after the game suggest Mendes will be out for 4 months and will miss their last 2 league games and the
Belgian Cup final.

Championship Group
Genk 1 - 1 Standard Liege (Vandenbroeck OG)
The big matches just keep coming for Liege with this being the biggest yet but it was a tough 1st half for them as Daerden and Caio fall to injury. The 2nd half began and as time went by it was also running out to which Saunt turned up the tempo and set up to go all out for the lead. In dramatic fashion in the 88th minute a Genk attack broke down with Crisetig intercepting a pass before spraying out wide to Carcela who crossed to Bienvenu who got his feet mixed up but it bobbled towards goal, Vandenbroeck in his attempts to clear puts it into his own net and Les Rouches fans took the roof of the Cristal Arena, That turned silent as from the kick off Genk fly down the left and equalise with Barda the goalscorer. A gutting moment. What a match!

Championship Group
Standard Liege 1 - 1 Lierse (Bienvenu)
Standard will be without Caio for 3 months and Daerden for 2 weeks after the injuries picked up last match. They also need a 5 goal turn around or Genk to drop points on the this, The Last day of the season! Fans all around the ground with personal radio’s getting the score from Genk who were playing Club Brugge away.
The teams came out with an almighty roar at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne. 20 minutes in there was an even bigger roar as Bienvenu puts Standard 1-0 up but they need more. Elation turned to nerves as Sinan Bolat punched 1 into his own net to send the game level. After 35 minutes a ripple went around the ground as news came through that Club Brugge had taken the lead against Genk and all that Liege needed was a draw or better to win the Pro League.
The score in Brugge was still 1-0, 58 minutes into matters here though and a stupid dive from Bienvenu earned him a 2nd yellow card and he was sent to the showers early. The pressure built on Liege to go forward but with only 10 men it would be risky. Benteke came on for Crisetig after the sending off and Benteke was had all the chances falling to him but he couldn’t score. The match entered stoppage time, Brugge still lead 1-0 against Genk but a Liege goal now would seal the title even if Genk equalised in Brugge. 5 minutes into injury time and the referee blew for full time. All Les Rouches fans needed was the score from Brugge.
The score was in, Club Brugge 1 - Genk 0, Standard Liege had won the title! For the 3rd year in a row! 15 points behind the leaders in the winter break. A sensational turn around from Standard Liege. The Stade Maurice Dufrasne was bouncing up and down. Flairs had been lit. The red of Standard Liege pumping into the sky. This is what football’s all about!

CHAMPIONS!

Belgian Cup Final
Standard Liege 2 - 0 Genk (Carcela, El Ghanassy)
Sensational moments from the last day of the season. Now cup fever has hit the Standard fans. Genk on the other hand feel robbed by Liege’s incredible comeback. All set for a brilliant match.
A drab first half played cautiously and with the mind. Several missed chances from Henri Bienvenu. The 2nd half was lit up with a Mehdi Carcela strike from 25 yards with his left foot, A real daisy cutter shot into the bottom corner. Standard Liege take the lead. Mehdi Carcela celebrates with a forward roll and a leap in the air with his arms in the air running to the Standard fans on the corner of his right wing.
By 70 minutes the Genk keeper had picked up a knock which meant he was having trouble with aerial balls. Time ticked over to 80 minutes and Liege have the ball passing into feet on the edge of the box, The ball with Defour spots a run from El Ghanassy who runs onto the ball before beating the keeper at the near post. 2-0 Liege and it looks like a double winning season with the Super Cup and the Pro League already in the cabinet.
The full time whistle blows, The Belgian Cup Winners 2013 are Standard Liege. Their first triumph in the competition since 1993. The celebrations will go on long into the night.

Season 4 Preview

Transfer Budget - £11m
Rich List - 90th (£42.5m)

Standard sign Petrov on a free
New signing Kyrylo Petrov has arrived today on a free transfer after signing a pre-contract agreement in January. He joins from Champions League finalists Dynamo Kyiv. The 23 year old can play as an anchor man or central midfield and is a magnificent capture for Liege.

Pedersen Returns
Another free transfer for Standard Liege was unveiled today. Nicklas Pedersen who joined Standard on loan in the 2010-11 season scoring 9 league goal in 17 games has joined from FC Groningen. The striker is still only 24 but will become one of the experienced heads in a young Standard Liege side.

Standard pair depart on free transfers
Prince Tagoe and Franck Berrier have moved away from Standard Liege on free transfers to OB and Auxerre respectively. Tagoe scored 4 league goal in 58 appearances for Liege over his 3 year stay. Berrier had a spat with Saunt in January which confirmed his fate and joins Auxerre after 46 appearances over 3 seasons.

Youngster Areola moves to Liege
Young French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has been transferred to Standard Liege for £4m from Paris Saint Germain. The 20 year old came through the ranks at PSG but has decided to move away to get first team football. Chris Saunt has described the player as the next Fabien Barthez who is the goalkeeping coach at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

Shavysh signs from Omonoia
Maksim Shavysh has moved to Liege for a fee of £4m. The attacking midfielder from Belarus is only 23 and has a bright future ahead of him. Saunt said that he has been a long term target and is delighted to get his man after the news just days before with Swiss winger Shaqiri rejecting Liege in favour of Getafe. Other long term targets include Ecuele Manga from Lorient and Boyata from Manchester City but both look like sealing big moves to Manchester United and AC Milan respectively.

Squad Update

Selected Goalkeepers
Alphonse Areola - Magnificent capture after intense scouting he became available for £4m. 20 years old so hes a definate one for the future, He will feature in the season ahead but isnt first choice between the sticks just yet.

Sinan Bolat - Fantastic keeper, Has spells of David James itus. But overall is a quality keeper attracting attention from Besiktas but i think ill keep him for a couple of seasons yet while Areola improves.

Selected Defenders
Laurent Ciman - RB - Quality option to have, Hes the more defensive of right-backs and very reliable.

Daniel Opare - RB - Attacking wing back, Depending on what game strategy i want to play depends on if Opare plays of not. Against the lesser sides when i want to attack Opare starts, If the opposition are a threat then Ciman gets the nod.

Jonothan Hendrickx - RB - Alot of interest in him, 1 of 3 players ive brought through the academy crop at the start of the game. He'll be Ciman's replacement unless a better right back becomes available to which ill sell him to gain some revenue from the academy.

Victor Ramos - CB - Ive got alot of centre backs at the club at the moment but Ramos has been an ever present except when he had a 10 month injury.

Tomislav Barbaric - CB - Quality centre back, Hes first choice with Ramos currently. He has the ability to get goals but hes a defensive rock.

Eliaquim Mangala - CB - Superb player to have, More of squad player than an out and out starter but can play in midfield so is an important player being so versatile.

David Mendes da Silva - CB - Another Mangala, Probably better in midfield defending than Mangala, Positions himself well in midfield. At the back you sence hes going to make mistakes but he keeps them to a minimum.

Fabio - LB - Was quality when he was on loan, Really attacking flying down the left wing most of the time but wit problems at the back last season i kept him abit more defensive to which he shone as well.

Sebastien Pocognoli - LB - Real quality defender, Hes better than Daerden and Van Damme put together but he misses something you cant quite put your finger on which means Fabio starts more often.

Selected Midfielders
Gicu Grozav - RM - Another product of the academy, Hes recently unhappy about the signing of Shavysh so i might send him out on loan. Played amazing last season as an impact sub. Turning games on their head.

Bryan Rabello - RM - Started well last season but he fell away and was forced out the starting 11 by the October/November stage. Alot of interest from massive sides in Europe so will be looking to give him more minutes on the pitch this year to drive up his value.

Yassine El Ghanassy - Winger - A really frustrating player to have. Brilliant signing for £2m and was fantastic in his 1st year but last season he loved shooting over or wide and i think his first goal was the 1 in the Belgian Cup final so is a fan favourite.

Mehdi Carcela - Winger - He can play absolutely anywhere with the attack option. Winger, Inside foward, Playmaker, Box-To-Box hes just pure quality. Never heard of him before i started the game but hes just brilliant.

Axel Witsel - Central Midfield - Influencial player, Versatile player like Carcela, Finished the season on fine form from left wing after id had enough of El Ghanassy.

Steven Defour - Ball Winner - Ball Winner/Deep lying playmaker or Anchor man, Hes the best central midfielder i have currently. Very inteligent player, Gets loads of assists and controls the midfield.

Kyrylo Petrov - Ball Winner - I had Lorenzo Crisetig at anchor man last year and could have signed him for £2m but for his wage demands of £20k p/w. Crisetig suprised me with solid displays from around January onwards he really shown me what the fuss was about however i Petrov became available in January after refusing to stay at Dynamo Kyiv who strangely got the CL final before losing to Real Madrid 5-1. Why he wanted to leave an overachieving side at a time when he did i dont know but im certain he'll fit in my side somewhere.

Maksim Shavysh - Attacking Midfielder - I got alot of scout reports on this guy and im delighted to have signed him for £4m. I plan to use him behind the front man and move back to the 4-4-1-1 to accomodate him into the side after playing alot of last season at 4-5-1.

Mats Rits - AMC - Ive retrained him from MC to make him play AMC as well i think its working well for him. Hes the Marco Verratti of FM11 because i havent got Italy loaded Rits being Belgian was a must sign. Very good prospect.

Selected Strikers
Caio - ST - I pursuaded my board to buy Caio. Fantastic goalscorer but sometimes he just takes to many chances to score which is frustrating because then the opposition normally go and score but hes got 12 goals in 17 games in his 1st year and 17 goals in the 34 last season. Proven goalscorer.

Nicklas Pedersen - ST - I am so pleased to bring him back after his 6 months on loan in season 1. To sign him on a free is good business and i expect him to challenge Caio for the loan striker role.

Henri Bienvenu - ST - Struggles to get into the side but pops up off the bench to score some really important goals last year. With Nicklas coming in i think he'll struggle to get too many appearances this year.

Christian Benteke - ST - The third of the academy players ive brang through. He holds up the ball well and scored a few goals last season. He has a really good understanding with Gicu Grozav so normally when i bring on Gicu, Christian comes on as well.
