If I may add something, a player who becomes world class that is not mentioned often is Lucas Ocampos from Monaco. Won the golden ball 3 times with me at Chelsea as a Winger set to support on the right and just last night he scored 3 for me in the champions league finals with Dortmund as an IF on the right set to attack even when he is right footed. He is naturally a left winger so this just shows his versatility. I have picked him up at different times, mostly end of first year, for anywhere between 7-12 mill with teams not in the main leagues such as Ajax.

True. He's also available on loan in the second/third seasons (sometimes even the first) and is extremely useful to teams who cannot afford to buy him. Recently I used him with Olympiacos (loaned 2nd and 3rd season), Ajax (loaned 1st and 2nd season).

He can also play as a cf (or a dlf support) and does score a few.

Reason I havent mentioned him is cos the rationale behind this thread when it comes to players is to mention players that are little known/off the beaten track.

Well spotted tho plus thanks for giving me the opportunity to comment on him!!

Cheers! Watched his whole first year at River Plate and at 17 he was over powering many veterans! Quite a player. :D

Lets build a tactic

The first thing to do is to have a clear idea of what you want your tactic/formation/players to do. I like pressing/tackling hard/limiting space and width. I also want my tactic to have multiple outlets for creating chances and be defensively solid.

So lets start by taking a basic 442 which looks something like this:

___X____X____

__X_X_X_X____

__X_X_X_X____
_____X_______

Now lets try to make the formation unpredictable in shape. A good way would be to turn it to something asymmetrical:

_____DLF_____

____AP_______IF

W_____BWM____

______DLP______

WB_BPD_CB___FB

______SK_______

I hope that the above is enough to let you understand the shape of the formation. But what does it achieve:

(a) Ball retention.

The player sitting in front of the back four is not purely defensive such as an anchor man but instead is a deep lying playmaker (another option would be to make him a half back).. I will give him a defensive role cos the intention is for him to have two functions, namely protect the defence AND serve to transition defence to attack. Put a player such as GAS GIL ROMERO there and it should work a treat. I then have another "playmaking" role higher up the field with a BWM (support - I would have preferred to put him on auto as that would give me more defensive solidity but I suspect the BWM role already has the duality inbuilt in it). The idea is that the BWM is a fit combative player who ll fight for the ball in midfield and act as a link between my defence and attack.

(b) Balance

To understand this I need to give you some info about the roles I give to my other players. The two cbs are of course on defend, the left wing back is behind a winger so its reasonable to have on automatic while the right full back is on attack (I sometimes have him as a wb or even a cwb but as the duty is attack and the team instruction is "look for overlap" that set up could expose space behind my right flank too much).

The winger is on support (and given instruction to stay wide and shoot less often as I want him solely to feed the "lone" cf), the bwm is on support the IF is on attack (so being an if he should regularly cut in and leave space behind him for the attacking fb/wb/cwb to overlap - incidentally DOES ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO INSTRUCT MY PLAYERS TO LOOK FOR OVERLAP ONLY ON ONE SIDE?). The AP also has a dual role namely that of the AP but also that which emanates from his attack duty. The lone attacker is a DLF on support (but he can be a S9/T though I prefer more simple roles generally).

So you see the balance: not too many roles which are the same, not too many people doing the same thing, enough people defending, supporting and attacking.

(c) Variety of chance creating outlets

It should be obvious from the above that the winger/AP/IF and even the bwm and rwb/fb/cwb are possible chance creating outlets the way they are set.

(d) Defensive solidity

Though this is considerably aided by the team instructions I do have at least 5 roles which are at least partly defensive (bpd/cb/lwb/rfb/bwm) 3 of whom are on defend plus a dlp who is not that defensive a role but IS on defend duty.

Player instructions

Apart from the winger as above I only give the GK instruction to distribute to defenders cos I want to keep ball and work it from the start of things.

Team instructions

As Im writing this away from the game Ill do it from memory and check it later.

More direct (cos I want my players to press the opposition and release players quickly once possession is recovered)/pass to space (cos it works lovely in FM14/cos it goes hand to hand with pressing and high defensive line)/push higher up (to assist in pressing the opponents)/play wider (cos I like width as per above and because of the formation set up)/exploit the flanks (obviously)/run at defence (cos I want my AP at least to erm run at defence)/hassle (ie press)/get stuck in (ie press)/look for overlap (as per above)/play offside (pressing game without this is suicidal. Also this is the reason for a Sweeper Keeper, who is on defend duty)/work ball into box (cos I dont want my players to shoot too much from outside the box)/stick to positions (cos I want my players to keep the shape of the formation)/be more expressive (cos I want my players to utilise their talents)

This set up together with everything else does tick most of the intended boxes when I put it in action in game, I dont see players keep shooting from stupid positions and I keep getting plaudits for playing both attacking and possession football DESPITE having things on RIGID and STANDARD as well as on MORE DIRECT (see above), and I dont let in too many goals. I have won loads of trophies around the world with the same basic set up (tweaked slightly for different matches and from season to season).

I also have two more preset team instructions one for CONTAIN (which I sometimes put in action together with changing from STANDARD to contain from about the 85th minute - see previous posts on how to ensure you dont concede in the last ten minutes).

More to come ...

Lets build a tactic - part 2

Team instructions (continued)

Pre set CONTAIN: Contain strategy. If I want to shut up shop I use this (see my last post on how to ensure you dont concede in the last 10 minutes for more detail) from about the 84/5th minute: drop deep (if opposition is better then much deeper) /play narrow/retain possession/(if opposition is equal or better) stay on feet/be more disciplined/stay in position/waste time/ play even safer.

I use the above plus: I turn the dlp into an anchorman and the two fbs/wbs into fb defend.

Pre set SCORE: Attack or if too desperate to score Overload. As per normal team instructions plus drill crosses and much higher defensive line.

Playing the formation/tactic

One of the most enjoyable things about FM (about any team management simulation) is "reactive management". And the above is designed for that. I always use a good tactical *** man (BATISTA DOS SANTOS is cheap and somebody I trust) and in matches I take on board what he says about the need to close down players etc (provided it makes sense from what I see myself watching matches at least on extensive). Also if opposition has an amc I instruct my dlp to man mark him and to tackle hard and in the OIs I give permanent instructions (any player playing as amc) to tackle him hard, close down always and show on foot).

OIs and other changes: I have two scouts on next opposition and I take on board what they say and make little tweaks accordingly such as no push up instruction, no play higher instruction, turning the winger into defensive winger, no look for overlap, identifying crucial players (dealing with them by OIs and even by DLP or BWM - eg if opposition team is Barcelona and no amc but messi on if I will instruct my dlp to man mark him despite him being dragged out of position and change instructions to more conservative, if one or both cbs low bravery they will be tackled hard and closed down always, opposition GK usually also closed down always). Basically I ask assman for OIs and then tweak both at start and every 5/10 minutes in matches if necessary.

I also wait about 10 minutes for any warnings that things are not going too well (see previous posts on reactive management) but the absolute cut off point is the 25th minute. If Im not ahead by then I WILL start changing stuff (usually by simply changing philosophy to attacking and then take it from there).

You can try the suggested tactics/formation etc but they are not plug and play and you do need to experiment. The intention of these two posts is really to give people ideas about how to set up tactics rather than follow what I do exactly.

Always a pleasure to give back to fm basers who have helped me soooooooooo much thru the years.

Ajax Logs -1

1. Why AJAX?

a. Because of the FM legend that is Cleon and this:

Ajax - When Real Life Meets Football Manager - FM14

b. Because it has a plethora of young players with at least 4**** potential, some of who can contribute to the first team for the get go.

c. Cos playing as them I have received the most offers (and the most generous offers) Ive ever received in FM. Its very easy to sell almost every player you want to sell and for good money.

d. Because you can have a long term save, build squad after squad for years AND continue to have a challenge for years as the top European teams will always come from better/richer countries.

e. Cos you dont have to spend a lot of money even if you do have it.

2. Starting out as AJAX

1. The planning stage

a. Identify the wonderkids. Make a development plan for each with time related targets. Use either the ingame notes system or use pen and paper. Put your youngsters in 4 tiers: top prospects/very good prospects/young players who you can afford to not pay that much attention to their development/deadwood to be released asap.

b. Identify the tutors who are already in the team (Poulsen/Daley Blind/Moisander/Sigbortson/De Jong/Duarte mainly) and those who ll come in (Iliasu SHILLA/DE VEZZE/C. COPPOLA etc - full report on players in and out in future).

c. Aim to produce at least 3 players for the first team every two seasons (you will actually find that you can produce more).

d. Set realistic (ie in comparison to real life at AJAX) targets. You will be a selling club. You will have to make money (low or non existent net spend from second summer transfer window onwards). I only allowed myself to buy non tutors in limited numbers and only till second summer transfer window.

e. Introduce the T.I.P.S. system (the system used by AJAX to develop players in real life - see Cleon's piece above) into your save as much as possible- what I did was: chose philosophies which will make the board to help me develop players (ie develop players from youth system/play attacking football/play possession football, tried to have coaches with the correct mentality accross all 3 teams (and quite a lot of them so that my players will get the best possible training, started work on making top youth and training facilities from day one, had all three teams learn exactly the same tactics so that when people are promoted they will have them ingraned in them, decided that every player produced will be comfortable in 3 positions and have useful ppms.

f. Set up scouting system and look for the best 14-16 yos coming out in the world every season (I set myself the limitation of only paying at most 2m for each with instalments -ie money coming out of my budget).

THE BEST STAFF - PART 1

ASSISTANT MANAGER

When hiring your Assistant Manager, you should primarily look at three attributes needed for a good assistant. These three attributes are; Determination, Discipline and Motivation.

If you plan from your assistant to carry out training, then you should also look at his coaching attributes. i would however urge you to deal with training yourself.

Also, if you?d like for your assistant to help you with tactics or setting up opposition instructions, then include Tactical Knowledge and Judging Player Ability to your search. I use what the assistant has to say about starting XI, tactics (pre match and in match) and OIs quite seriously so for me this are the main attributes the assman needs to have. My personal favourite who is extremely cheap (low wages and free) and goes to almost anywhere is PAULO CESAR BATISTA DOS SANTOS. He's also a 4* trainer on tactics and defence.

Lastly, consider including Adaptability if he is not from the nation you?re managing in.

The WC Opening Ceremony - LOLOLOLOL

This from Football365 is so funny (and spot on):

When you have taken a lot of strong hallucinogenic narcotics in one's youth, occasionally your brain triggers a flashback; a brief shard of psychedelic vision in among the neutral tones of the straight world. That's what I thought I was witnessing watching the World Cup opening ceremony.

Perhaps more surreal still was having Clive Tyldesley commentating on it, especially without Andy Townsend uttering his 'that's better' and 'for me, Clive' mantras in our ears. Let's be clear about this, it was a mild form of torture, which once over, allowed to us see life as a more joyous experience merely for the lack of it.

No one seemed to even work up much of a sweat, quite possibly because some of the participants had just wandered onto the pitch, shuffling aimlessly around and looking vacant. It had the vague, shambolic tone of a school event whose budget had only stretched to crepe paper and lots of glue. Some people were on stilts though and you can't beat a man on stilts, largely because he's much bigger than you.

Jennifer Lopez appeared out of an egg, which I fondly imagine she lives in as though it is some sort of improvised caravan. She did that squatting while painfully bellowing thing, which is rather popular these days. It made it look as though she was trying to expel an especially reluctant stool or that she was actually singing out of her **** sphincter. Now that's an act.

A man called Pitbull, wearing a much smaller man's clothes, gave it up, along with another woman who looked very pleased with herself despite having no obvious reason so to do, but sadly, this musical extravaganza was lost on the viewer as all the microphones appeared, possibly in an act of mercy, to have been turned off.

This made things appear even more surreal as all events played out in a kind of throbbing silence. All effort by performers rendered mute. At one point it felt as though we were watching the whole event from inside a double-glazed glass helmet. Clive gave up saying anything at all as it unfolded like the sort of vision of horror a frontline battle unit may have witnessed in the Mekong Delta. Like all true psychedelic experiences, words became irrelevant and limited tools with which to make reason out of this reality.

And then it was over. Had it really even happened? J-Lo got back in her egg, Pitbull presumably into some sort of kennel. Opening ceremonies without the emotional and psychological support of LSD? Not for me, Clive.

Ajax Logs 2 - Season 1

TRANSFER DEALINGS

INS

1. Ajax is a little light up front and at DM. But there are players in the younger squads who could fill these positions so there was no need to buy too many.

Vietto for the attacking spot (3.6 with instalments), Gas Gil Romero for the DM spot (4.5 instalments partly) and I also bought Savitskyi as he is young got a lot of potential and is very cheap (375k). Oh and I loaned in Lucas Ocampos for the season.

2. I then bought lots of tutors:

Iliasu Shilla
Stefano Pardini (GK)
El-Akchaoui
Biava

Benjani (bit particular with who his friends are)
De Vezze
Vincenzo Italiano
Carmine Coppola

Pierre Wome (a big mistake - this guy is a ******* who doesnt get on with ANYONE!)
Shanon Carmelia
Martijn Brakke

OUTS:

A few young dead wood

Tobias Sana to Anderlecht for 800K
Lasse Schone (January) to Basel for 3.3m

Kishna/Keskin/Acolatse Season long loans

Hey mate, could you give me some tips on how to block the channels that wingers tend to run into? Also what formation counters the 4-5-1 with a dm and two cms?

Hey mate, could you give me some tips on how to block the channels that wingers tend to run into? Also what formation counters the 4-5-1 with a dm and two cms?

1. Tackling the winger/if/through ball problem is a bit of a *******. You can try defensive wingers or wingers with good tackling and marking stats and give them instructions to man mark opposition wingers. And or IOs to close down (but not tightly mark if they are pacey). Or you can try deeper defence or using a sweeper But all these options tend to blunt your own team. I find that the best thing to do is to have pacey defenders (see previous posts) and look at opponent's squad and formation - usually its very easy to pin point the "playmakers" there - and then to deal with them so as to limit the amount of attempted through balls.

2. Im stumped with the 451 formation with a dm sitting deep and two cms actually and was thinking of asking ideas from people ...

Fair enough, I'm working on an LFC save right now and i'm doing pretty well and I managed to get Suarez scoring quite a lot. Its just that i'm finding it hard to nullify that formation, they normally say its best to play the same formation if your team is better and let them out perform the opposition but doesn't really work. a 4-5-1 with the wingers deeper could work. its the same one Ancelotti uses for madrid right now
