Top four finish key for Marcelino as Abramovich face says time is running out

Chelsea won their last four games to give Marcelino a breath of fresh air. The manager has been under heavy fire and was expected to get the sack after the next negative result. And it could still be the case. One of the biggest Chelsea related questions this month is how long will Marcelino survive at the helm?

Late September as Chelsea drop outside top 4

One certain barometer for what direction the winds at Stamford Bridge blow is the owner's facial expression. And if we take a look at Abramovich through the season it's frosty with impending danger of a blizzard.

Winter sees Chelsea back in contention

It is Chelsea's position in the league that keeps Marcelino at his post. The Blues are still in fourth place but that is unlikely to last with Manchester United just two points behind with two games in hand and City pretty close as well. The bare minimum Marcelino needs to maintain is top 4 and the first moment Chelsea drop out of Champions League qualification places nothing can save him.

Saint James' Park was buzzing with tension as Newcastle throwing everything at visiting Crystal Palace with little effect. Palace were in desperate need of points and had the firm intention to get something from us. Half time whistle came at 0-0 and the crowd began showing signs of anxiety. It is rare for Newcastle to leave it for the second half and with numerous chances wasted the fans began wondering if it wasn't our day. Hristov has had limited options to rotate his squad this month with Pape Diédhiou and Dong Dexin on continuous international duty and Leomar sidelined for several weeks. This affected the team with many players appearing a little jaded in front of goal.

Geordies worried at HT

Tireless midfielder Aubrey Mashishi was the biggest disappointment with a terrible first half performance. Hristov persisted with him after the break though and whatever he told him it worked. Aubrey finally broke the deadlock for Newcastle just before the hour mark and it was a walk in the park ever after.

Tabloids looking to heap pressure

This game comes as a warning to the lads and perhaps an alarming sign tension could be getting to them. I believe the 3-0 final score flatters us and the backroom staff should draw the right conclusions. Crystal Palace came very, very close to an upset and any mistake before we play our games in hand to Rovers would mean they are out of touch. We need to remain on our feet, be patient and ignore the hype about the seven point gap to the top. While it is a new situation for the players they must remember they are still in commanding position and everything will be alright.

Chelsea beat Liverpool to centre-back Pritchard signature

Chelsea have unveiled their second signing for January. Sheffield Wednesday wonderkid Mike Pritchard (21) has put pen to his personal contract and joins the Blues in a £22.5m deal. Pritchard has been followed closely by Liverpool but the Merseyside club failed to materialize their interest with a firm bid.

This transfer answers the prayers of both fans and manager Marcelino for a much needed addition in central defense. Chelsea have struggled with injuries in this position over long periods of the season and Marcelino complained numerous times about being forced to constantly shuffle his defense and often play players out of position.

It is unlikely to see any more activity from Chelsea until the end of the month even though the squad could do with another full back.

Devils defeat old rivals to keep in touch with City

Gary Neville

Published at 8:33PM, January 27 2027

January has brought disappointment after disappointment for Old Trafford. After the sale of Ashby we managed to concede an embarrassing home defeat to Oxford and crush out of the Capital One Cup semi final. The draw for the FA Cup hasn't been generous either putting us against Newcastle. With so many tough hits to take it is a bright ray of light to see us move closer to Champions League qualification.

Five Devils disappointed with cup shock

To make it sweeter it is old foes Arsenal we beat to send them down to 10th place and kill off their own European aspirations. It is a massive win considering we have four players on the African Cup of Nations and two more out injured. Picking up points in this period is pretty much against the odds with the squad down to bare bones. I would have liked a couple fresh bodies to be brought in but it is looking unlikely.

We need to hold until Cup of Nations ends

Despite everything we are doing well. Fifth, two points behind City and two games in hand to them is better we could have hoped for. The team will look much stronger when the African contingent returns, all we need until then is to avoid dropping too far behind.

Leeds United: caught up with Newcastle but Rovers get away - Matteo
View attachment 350204

by Dominic Matteo
Our good vein of form has given us the comfort of chasing the top 2. Champions League football next season is merely a matter of time now. Only question left to answer is are we in the mix for the title. National media has advertised it as a two-horse race but is it really?

View attachment 350217
A race of two? Hold your horses!

Newcastle made a wrong step this week at Anfield and were probably fortunate to get away with a draw. Blackburn were also close against Birmingham of all teams. Rovers were wide open for taking but hit massive luck once again with numerous injuries and a red card halting their relegation bound hosts' attempt to get back in the match.

View attachment 350218
It says it's a race of three!

All that matters is the table. It has this to say: 1. Blackburn 70; 2. Newcastle 61; 3. Leeds 61. Whatever Newcastle do with their games in hand we are nine points away from the top. I'm gladly accepting the role of underdogs here but... Who would dare say we don't have any chances?

All I can say is that this story is amazing! Keep it up, it's really refreshing in original!

Wait, what? How the **** did Mork manage to miss a penalty against Walsall but managed to score against Newcastle? Still, we only lost 1-0 and we reached the 5th round, so I have no idea how that happened. (Like did we beat 4 non-league teams til we got there.) So this game manages to be both realistic and unrealistic. Realistic, Walsall concede a penalty (Last season we always managed to concede penalties, whereas this season we always managed to get them?), Unrealistic, we managed to save a penalty and we managed to do well in the FA Cup. Last request where are Walsall? (Are we still in League 1?)

Walsall Watch

Following some flirting with relegation from League 2 in the 2024/25 season to eventually finish 19th, Walsall managed a more respectable 9th in 2025/26. Recent times have been hard for the fans with the club ending up in bottom half League 1 until a dismal 2015/16 saw them relegated. They managed to bounce back with a third place finish the next season only to go straight down again. It's been League 2 in the past 8 years now and the Saddlers are pinning their hopes on manager Dean Smith to turn things around. Smith has been trusted with the job for an impressive sixteen years and one thing Walsall can be proud with is stability. They will need to rely on loans and free transfers heavily though with no money available for deals of any other magnitude.

Since 2012/13 Walsall managed to get to the FA Cup Fourth round four times, including this season when they lost to Liverpool. Capital One Cup campaigns have been far less successful with the club developing a nasty habit of going out in the first two rounds over the past six seasons. It will be interesting to see if Dean Smith is offered another contract with his current deal expiring this summer. We should have the answer within six months. As well as which division will the Saddlers play in next season.
