Blackburn set up title decider with Magpies after classic display at Sheffield
............................................................................................................

Watching Newcastle take another easy win in the early game put the pressure back on Rovers for our 3 PM clash against Sheffield Wednesday. It only made the lads more determined to prove their worth and the job was done with three goals within the first half. As anticipated, the title will most likely be decided with a direct clash over ruling champions Newcastle United in the next league game.

Neil Lennon talks about title decider

Neil Lennon picked his words carefully after the Wednesday game. Despite a convincing all-round display the manager spoke highly of goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and his ability to coordinate the defense. A unit which produced 14 clean sheets in 29 league games and conceded just 22 goals. He could have praised Italian Luca Boccaccini, bound to take the top goalscorer award this season, but knows our defense will be more influential to the scoreline when we travel up north.

ter Stegen key for our visit at St. James'

Despite both contenders winning their respective games, the weekend wasn't short of surprises, either. Leeds suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Arsenal and if anyone held hopes they might recover and rejoin the race will have to admit that's now highly unlikely. It is us or Newcastle. And we need to go there and try to win it. Any other result - even a draw - will put the Magpies in the driving seat.

Manchester loss adds spice to the top four fight

Chelsea still find themselves in top 4 after the weekend. It might not be good enough though. An excellent opportunity has been wasted to secure the fourth position with the 2-0 loss at Old Trafford. Manchester United on the other hand will be buoyant knowing two wins from their three games in hand will be enough to overturn the Blues and return in the Champions League zone.

Old Trafford loss could sink the ship

There is additional disappointment as Chelsea were the better side and created much more than their hosts but went down to two second half goals as possession proved more effective than sharp counter-attacking football. The attacking pair of Palmer and Simon need to take the blame because of the large number of chances they spurned. Unlike them, Manchester United took full advantage of their shots and ultimately earned the points in an encounter Chelsea did not deserve to lose.

Danger of no CL at Stamford Bridge next season

Where does this put Chelsea in the top four fight? The Blues occupy fourth place but are no longer favourites to end there. With all the teams down to Liverpool still having their chances, it will take at least two mistakes from Manchester United for Chelsea to breathe easily again. For they can find themselves as low as seventh in the final league table, pondering what went wrong.

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Blackburn (1st; 82pts; +58) all three games won this month but Rovers are looking over their shoulders as Newcastle make the most of their games in hand and get closer and closer. No injuries give comfort to manager Neil Lennon and they can prepare well for the decisive part of the season.
0 Current first team injuries.

Newcastle
(2nd; 79pts; +84) amazing string of performances allows the Magpies to edge closer to Blackburn. They survived without their international stars and look in perfect shape to win the title again.
1 Current first team injury:
Pape Diédhiou (DC/DM) 2-3 weeks (pulled hamstring)

Leeds (3rd; 67pts; +36) poor month for Leeds with two losses from three games. The momentum that got them in the title race is now gone and they will need to pick some good form quickly before their direct Champions League qualification position becomes at risk.
1 Current first team injury:
Rémi Rivière (MRC) 2-4 weeks (fractured skull?!)

Chelsea (4th; 59pts; +23) a good month spoiled by an unlucky loss to Manchester United in the end. They will be praying to hold on to the current league position.
2 Current first team injuries:
Gabriel (M/AMC/ST) 1-3 weeks (dislocated shoulder)
Hugo Viviano (M/AMR) 3-7 days (twisted knee)

Manchester United (6th; 54pts; +26) a disappointing loss at Leeds in the beginning of the month has been quickly forgotten and the lates victory over top four rivals Chelsea deservedly puts the Devils back in the frame. Should they win at least two of their three games in hand it will be enough to climb above Chelsea.
1 Current first team injury:
Dylan Connery (AMR) 2-3 weeks (sports hernia)

Liverpool
(7th; 54pts; +12) magnificent form for Liverpool sees them pick 10 points this month despite an injury ravaged squad. They can still squeeze above their opponents and return to Champions League football next season but even if it doesn't happen they can be proud with staying competitive for so long.
5 Current first team injuries:
Salvador (DM, MC) 4-9 days (hip injury)
Eirik Mork (MC/ST) 10-14 days (calf strain)
Daniël van Bremen (M/AMC/ST) 3-4 weeks (torn calf muscle)
Lorenzo Tassi (M/AMC) 5-9 days (pulled hamstring)
Igor Gajic (DM/MC) 8-11 days (calf strain)

Other teams to watch:

Manchester City (5th) still have rather large chances to return to the Champions League next season despite losing their fourth position to Chelsea.

Arsenal (8th) have been pleasing their fans with some impressive performances, a 5-1 win over Leeds being the pick. They continue climbing the table and leave a lot wondering what it could have been if the first half of the season wasn't so poor.

Crystal Palace (17th) are much safer than their position in the table suggests and perhaps a couple more good results will be enough to stay in the Premier League another season.

Stoke, Birmingham and Derby remain in the bottom three for the third month in a row. They will need a miracle to climb out now.

Newcastle United Head of Youth Development Xavi has informed the Evening Chronicle a new batch of youngsters have arrived at the club's academy. Xavi is excited by promising wing back Branco Medaric and feels he has the potential to be one of the most gifted players to have come through the youth ranks at Newcastle in recent years. Medaric has already been offered a contract by the club and we wish him speedy development. Xavi also picked Antonio Shore as a player to hold onto and the promising striker will be signed on a senior contract once he turns 17.

Leeds United: back on track for third place finish - Matteo
View attachment 352157

by Dominic Matteo
A strong performance against Sheffield Wednesday saw Leeds leave behind the hangover after the Newcastle loss that forced us out of the title race. And that comes just in time for a team not yet sure of direct qualification in the Champions League group stage next season. The ripples of disappointment following the mauling at the hands of Arsenal threatened our otherwise strong dressing room morale and I am relieved to see the players respond in time.

Dressing room morale returns

We find ourselves in no man's land with serious distance both up and down the table now. It is important to maintain our motivation and end the season with a strong run. I think finishing third is imperative and could be looked at as an improvement over last season's fourth position. We cannot deny matching Blackburn and Newcastle this time around was too much to ask for.

View attachment 352168
Title race down to the wire

In the meantime we can watch the title race and learn from the end-spiel. After Blackburn came twice from behind including a dramatic late Boccaccini equalizer to get away with a draw in the direct clash, Newcastle will end the season with a negative balance against any of the 19 opponents for the first time in quite a while. Rovers probably have mixed feelings about that though knowing if both sides maintain their winning form until the end, they will finish with equal points and the Magpies' significantly better goal difference will kick in. With only seven rounds to go we are in for a thrilling sprint to the title, albeit as viewers. And for the first time in the past 15 years it is unclear who will prevail.

Devils triumph in Manchester Derby, Champions League in sight

Gary Neville

Published at 6:19PM, March 14 2027

Manchester United showed more of the same which got us a massive victory over Chelsea and defeated another direct opponent for the fourth place - the noisy neighbours City. As in the clash with the Blues we were dominated over large periods of the game and yet somehow managed to come out on top. This sparks memories of another, much more glorious times for the club - not too long ago we were nicking points in the same manner to emerge champions. The prize in sight is a little less mouth-watering now but in no way less important.

Memories of better times

Sir Alex spoke about transfers after the game and he is spot on as usual. The margin between the players who would come to us and who would go to Newcastle, Blackburn and Leeds is Champions League football and we need it to get on the same playing field as them. Otherwise we will always be lagging behind in the market, selling prospects like Ashby instead of reinforcing them with stars like Boccaccini or Fanta.

View attachment 352177
Money not enough to compete in market

We stand at the gates of heaven and hold the keys in our hands. It's entirely up to us to walk through and close the door under the noses of both Chelsea and City. And if we can score three in less than ten minutes to break down a dominant Man City at their ground, I have faith we can do just that.
