Not too long ago Leeds united fans were sweating over the title race. Football is such a peculiar, sadly sometimes unforgiving game. We are now down to fourth position and considering our recent form we're not secure there, either. Today's loss at the hands of West Ham puts Champions League football next season in real jeopardy.
How did it come to this? Ever since the scandalous loss to Newcastle - which effectively put our title hopes to an end - the team has been suffering from severe drop in confidence. We lost three of five games after that match and also managed to drop out of the FA Cup and the Champions League (to Newcastle again). Accumulating 9 losses in 14 games - compared to just 3 in the entire season before that! Injuries, suspensions and finding ourselves on the wrong end of key referee decisions have played a major part in our downfall but Harry Redknapp must take responsibility as a manager for failing to motivate the players properly.
The season isn't over yet and the players must pull themselves together and salvage a respectable end of the campaign by making sure we finish third and avoid the scare of Champions League play-offs in the autumn. Dropping out of top four would be an utter disaster because - let's face it - we were heavily tipped to challenge Newcastle for the title and the massive margin to the top is simply inexcusable.
