Leeds United: freefall continues, Champions League football in danger - Matteo
View attachment 353508

by Dominic Matteo
Not too long ago Leeds united fans were sweating over the title race. Football is such a peculiar, sadly sometimes unforgiving game. We are now down to fourth position and considering our recent form we're not secure there, either. Today's loss at the hands of West Ham puts Champions League football next season in real jeopardy.

Current form is total freefall

How did it come to this? Ever since the scandalous loss to Newcastle - which effectively put our title hopes to an end - the team has been suffering from severe drop in confidence. We lost three of five games after that match and also managed to drop out of the FA Cup and the Champions League (to Newcastle again). Accumulating 9 losses in 14 games - compared to just 3 in the entire season before that! Injuries, suspensions and finding ourselves on the wrong end of key referee decisions have played a major part in our downfall but Harry Redknapp must take responsibility as a manager for failing to motivate the players properly.

Champions League football is a must

The season isn't over yet and the players must pull themselves together and salvage a respectable end of the campaign by making sure we finish third and avoid the scare of Champions League play-offs in the autumn. Dropping out of top four would be an utter disaster because - let's face it - we were heavily tipped to challenge Newcastle for the title and the massive margin to the top is simply inexcusable.

Incredible win over Chelsea brands heroes as Immortals

It has been a few times this season Rovers were outplayed but somehow managed to get away with three points in the bag. That is not the way we'd like to win but to be fair there will always be a game or two you simply need to survive and Chelsea tested our skill in this particular art to a great extent. Despite being outshot and satisfying with a small portion of possession, accepting we needed to get tough and commit additional fouls, we simply made the most of our chances and struck genuine gold on the counter.

Neil Lennon brands his players "Immortals"

And mark my words, scoring four goals against this Chelsea side in such a hostile atmosphere is really something! Analyzing our remaining fixtures it was the toughest game we had left and Neil Lennon was more than happy to see it out unharmed. He called the lads "Immortals" and who could argue this? We are the only side which will finish the season unbeaten in the league by Newcastle, we are in the Semi Final of the Champions League and have just three league games to win and possibly even get the elusive title.

Exciting run-in in sight

We face Everton away, followed by home games with Manchester City and Sunderland. Not the easiest of run-ins but all of these are winnable. If we can go past Roma we'll be set for an all-English Champions League final (Newcastle meet Chelsea in the other fixture). It's going to be nervous but for all the right reasons. So let's enjoy the ride and perhaps it will be complemented by some silverware in the end - for we are now Immortals!

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Blackburn (1st; 98pts; +75) no points dropped in a flawless April keep Rovers at the top as they look to break the 100 points record for the first time in their history.
1 Current first team injury:
Amos Obi (ST) 9-14 days (groin strain)

Newcastle
(2nd; 95pts; +96) another perfect month for the Magpies and they still hold all the aces in deciding where the title will go this season.
1 Current first team injury:
Leomar (DM/MRC/AMRL) 7-9 days (chest injury)

Leeds (3rd; 76pts; +39) poor form with 2 wins and 2 losses for Leeds and they are in real danger of losing third place and automatic Champions League Group entry which seemed secured not so long ago.
2 Current first team injuries:
Ignazio Messina (M/AMRL) 6-10 days (groin strain)
Hamaye Fanta (M/AML) 5-7 weeks (torn hamstring)

Manchester United (4th; 73pts; +42) excellent April for the Devils delivers a much anticipated return to top four and Champions League football next season seems all but granted. As if this isn't good enough, Manchester United can even look further up and challenge Leeds for third!
2 Current first team injuries:
Shola Shoretire (MC) 11-14 days (damaged knee cartilage)
Martyn Flint (D/WBR) 10-14 days (sprained ankle)

Chelsea (5th; 68pts; +23) 2 wins and 2 losses not good enough from the Blues this month and they are set to miss out on Champions League through the league.
1 Current first team injury:
Gabriel (M/AMC/ST) 10-12 days (gashed lower leg)

Liverpool (6th; 63pts; +9) good form and some positive results in other fixtures allow Liverpool to hop above Manchester City and revive hopes of returning European nights back to Anfield.
2 Current first team injuries:
Badji Soumbounou (AMRL/ST) 5-8 weeks (torn calf muscle)
Eirik Mork (MC/ST) 2-3 weeks (sprained ankle)

Other teams to watch:

Manchester City (7th) suffer more indifferent form at the worst possible time and after they were in the frame for Champions League football over large part of the season now even face missing out on Europa League.

Stoke, Birmingham and Derby remain in the bottom three for the fifth month in a row. It's not all doom and gloom though as abysmal Crystal Palace offer some hope by ending April just one point above Stoke, three above Derby and four above Birmingham.

Last-gasp Priestley equalizer could bring title to Tyneside!

I didn't think I'd ever say that but here comes nothing: Newcastle could celebrate a hard-fought point at Middlesbrough! It was a heavily disappointing early Saturday match for us as Middlesbrough somehow scored with their only shot in the game and we were firing blanks. A debatable decision from the referee to disallow an early second half goal from Priestley could have cost us dearly but Jim recovered to bag a dramatic equalizer at the death. The final whistle settled the game at 1-1 and it felt like a defeat, disastrous defeat which could have cost us the title.

Boro fans thought they cost us the title

But the afternoon wasn't over with Blackburn visiting Everton. And with the trophy within their reach Rovers somehow managed to blow it by losing 0-1! Fairplay to Everton, a side competing for nothing in the final rounds of the season. They were a match for Blackburn all around the pitch and unlike Middlesbrough completely deserved what they got.

Peric scores Everton winner against Rovers

Of course the title hasn't been won yet. Our recent form suggests we are no less capable of blowing it than Rovers. Additionally we are not first yet. We have three games to play to Blackburn's two and we are two points behind them. It now seems unlikely the title will be decided on goal difference but still a single wrong step will mean we will lose our advantage. Hopefully there won't be any more freak results and Jim Priestley's goal will be confirmed as the turning point which won us a joint-record 19th Premier League title.

Liverpool return to Europe with a mad record-scoring game

We are back to Europe! With two rounds left we are now eight points clear of Manchester City at sixth position and after Newcastle won the Capital One Cup it is now confirmed Liverpool will play in Europa League next season!

View attachment 353552
A game for generations to remember

To make it better we won the decisive game in style breaking our highest-scoring Premier League record. Relegation struggling Stoke City were forced to chase the game and we took advantage to full extent in our most memorable evening this season. An early opener from Tassi and two quick goals from Villa and van Bremen penalty near the half hour made it look easy before Ilic pulled one back for the hosts. Another goal from Gajic allowed us to walk out at half time leading 4-1. But the show wasn't over yet. Another penalty from van Bremen extended the lead further before Garcia bagged a brace to get Stoke back in contention, the score now intimidating 5-3. Jesenkovic and yet another penalty from van Bremen completed the perfect evening and gave us double reason to celebrate!

Liverpool return to Europa League!

This puts a brilliant end to a season which held much struggle for Liverpool. Numerous injuries and terribly inconsistent form had us outside European positions pretty much all the time. But it only makes meeting our most important objective sweeter! Roll on Europa League!

Mark Lawrenson FA Cup Final preview

It is little surprise FA Cup holders Newcastle have booked a place in yet another final of the tournament, and unlike the Capital One Cup this time they face some competition. Their opponents today are Chelsea, determined to seek revenge for the recent Champions League Semi Final loss by the Magpies. This may be the last chance for the Blues to save their season with top four finish in the league impossible. It is worth nothing the Magpies haven't lost in the past 38 meetings between the sides.

Newcastle - Leomar (chest injury)
Chelsea - Palmer (ineligible), Gabriel (gashed lower leg), Dani (stubbed toe)

FINAL SCORE: Newcastle United 3-1 Chelsea

Newcastle once again showed their amazing ability to switch to another gear when it comes to a competition final and simply blew Chelsea out of the game with a bursting start. Mikael Lampi put another man of the match performance and his brace was pretty much the defining difference between the sides. Chelsea will be bitterly disappointed after coming so close but a late Viviano consolation goal was not good enough for anything but the silver medals. This win marks another glorious campaign for the Magpies as they have now completed a magnificent quintuple by adding the FA Cup to the English Community Shield, the European Super Cup, the Club World Championship and the Capital One Cup - and they could add further glory! Now let's take a look at match stats and individual performances:

Rovers keep hopes alive after Manchester City thriller
............................................................................................................
By Kevin Gallacher.................iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.7:12 PM Sunday 9th May 2027 in Sport
............................................................................................................

The shock defeat at the hands of Everton had Blackburn fans, pundits and all who don't want Newcastle to win the ****** thing again in despair. Reality is it changes nothing. Blackburn needed a wrong step from Newcastle to finish first before that loss, they need a wrong step from Newcastle after it, too. A single wrong step, unless Rovers fail in another game. We came close to that today but once again showed tremendous character to get out of trouble.

View attachment 353581
Rovers see off determined Citizens

It could and should have been much easier when we took a three goal clear lead in the first half but City came back to just a goal behind twice in the game to make the final ten minutes a very nervous affair. Ultimately we held on to the final whistle and got the all important points to reclaim the top spot.

View attachment 353583
It will be decided on final day

We have been top for fifteen rounds total, more than any other team in the league - including Newcastle. The least we deserved was to push the title fight to a final day resolution. Newcastle meet Manchester United midweek in a postponed game but even if they win there they can't claim the title before the last round is played. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though as while we play Sunderland, they need to face freshly relegated Stoke City who are unlikely to challenge them. But it isn't over until the final whistle is blown and we have earned the right to hope so fingers crossed! All of England is behind us now!

Red Devils return to Champions League - Stoke relegated

Gary Neville

Published at 7:26PM, May 9 2027

We are back in Champions League! It is a real pleasure to be able to type these words once again after a lengthly pause but I must also stress it is no less than we deserve - the fans, the lads, the manager and everyone associated with the club! There were many who doubted we would manage to pull this one off but here we are, two games left on our schedule list and certain to end the season in top four! To make it sweeter we are in pole position to finish third, above Leeds - who were supposed to be in the title race!

View attachment 353585
We will be in one of those in the autumn!

Further credit must be assigned for doing the job against a side playing for their lives. Stoke City were aware a poor result could ultimately confirm their relegation from the Premier League and sadly that is exactly what happened with the final whistle. I have sympathy for them but it is fair to say they got it on their heads with some dubious management decisions, especially when they appointed a man with notorious experience in terms of relegations with numerous clubs.

Silverware in sight!

Hang on! Our season isn't over yet! We still face Newcastle with third place ours to take it and even a draw there could be enough for our ambitions and to deprive them of equaling our 19 title record; and further more we meet Benfica in the Europa League final so the season could end with some long due silverware. We are now walking in a fairy tale - let's make sure it concludes with a happy end!

Newcastle equal Manchester United's record of 19 league titles!!!

The final day of the season offered little surprise but there were plenty of fireworks as the six title contenders managed 25 goals in their games. Blackburn bagged the most convincing score with a 6-0 trashing of visiting Sunderland to bring their final tally to the amazing 104 points. This was not enough to match a determined Newcastle squad who beat relegated Stoke City 5-0 to gather 105 and defend the title for yet another season.

Final whistle is blown for the 2026/26 season

Manager Dimiter Hristov was in buoyant mood after the final whistle and rightly so - Newcastle now have 19 league titles, equaling the greatest record in England so far held by Manchester United. The Red Devils had a good campaign of theirs to end up with the bronze medals and return to Champions League football. Longest serving manager Sir Alex Ferguson will hope to build on those foundations next season and get more involved in the title chase to reclaim the record and prevent Newcastle from running ahead with 20 league titles.
