It is with regret that Sunderland AFK announces that Aykut Kocaman has been relieved of his duties as Sunderland AFC Manager. This has been a difficult decision for the Chairman and Board to make but we feel it must be made with the apprehensive danger of relegation. Despite everyone's best efforts, the Club has performed disappointingly off-target for the resources available. Chairman Ellis Short said: "Aykut's record speaks for itself and he has our gratitude for all his hard work and commitment over the last seven months. Things don't always go to plan but I wish him well." The club will announce a new manager shortly with names on the shortlist including Dougie Freedman, Gary Cahill, Andriy Yarmolenko and Eddie Howe.

Rovers victorious at Old Trafford - top of the league now

Our amazing streak is still alive after a spectacular clash at Old Trafford. Manchester United are not the usual hesitant side this season and taking three points on the road against them gives us the upper hand against one of our most likely rivals for the title. We now have 15 league wins and top of the league - no less than we deserve!

View attachment 356341
Rovers unscathed at Old Trafford

We have to thank our amazing strike force again. Luca Boccaccini and Can Özdemir have been forced to make do with little chances in a game the Devils had nearly all the opportunities but somehow both of them found their way on the score sheet. It is pleasing to see the 95000 crowd silenced over long periods in the game. Even the mighty support couldn't get Manchester United the equalizer they were chasing in the last twenty minutes after former Rover Amos Obi gave them hopes by pulling one back.

View attachment 356342
League table just like last season

The league table bears weird similarities with the previous campaign. We have taken the lead again and Newcastle are chasing with games in hand - again. Although this time we are on equal terms with them regarding experience and I am curious if they can match our hunger. Because make no mistake, we are hungry to take that title home.

Europa League group success buys dead man walking Marcelino time
View attachment 356409
Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 8:01PM, December 22 2027

This week saw the first managerial casualty for the season. Chelsea fans are surprised - and a growing part of them disappointed - it wasn't Marcelino but Sunderland's Aykut Kocaman. After the home loss at the hands of Blackburn the club has come with an official statement supporting Marcelino and claiming he has the backing of the owner. Those blindly believing Abramovich has taken a new course should not be fooled though. Roman simply doesn't want to upset the team morale after the team made it through the Europa League groups and is still in the hunt for a trophy.

View attachment 356418
More and more fans wish this for Marcelino

The Blues have fallen short of expectations in the league though and it is only dressing room support for the manager that separates him from the sack. Chelsea sit closer to relegation than the title and the big game syndrome makes that unlikely to change. The fans are divided in their opinions. Growing numbers suggest stability would only produce results if the right man is in charge and Marcelino can at best prepare the club for the man truly capable of pushing it to the next level.

View attachment 356419
Defensive leaks unlikely to be fixed

In the immediate term mounting defensive worries are likely to spoil the holidays for the Blues. Cvetanovski and Davis will miss the busy period and Djalma has been exhausted in recent games. Chelsea have conceded the most amongst all title contenders - 21, and that number threatens to grow further before the end of December.

Sunderland AFK Chairman Ellis Short would like to welcome Dougie Freedman as the club's new manager. Dougie has already met the playing and backroom staff and everyone is determined to work hard towards the sole objective to avoid relegation from the Premier League. Short has asked the fans for patience amongst negative reactions to the appointment of a man known for suffering relegation with four different clubs, including his latest three. A compensation pack of £2m will be paid to his previous club Stoke City - who now play in the Championship after a surprise relegation last campaign. Dougie Freedman will sit on the bench for the first time this weekend for the home Tyne & Wear derby clash with Newcastle.

Boxing day misery ends Devils hopes of 20th title

Gary Neville

Published at 7:09PM, December 26 2027

In the space of a couple weeks we have blown our title hopes. The latest derby loss away to Leeds puts us 12 points behind league leaders Blackburn and considering they have only lost once to Newcastle and the Magpies are yet to drop any points we have to keep our heads low for the time being. It is a pity we couldn't make our early season form count in the big games recently although it isn't a major surprise. Nobody would have expected us to pull together 10 or 20 games winning sequence and we were always going to rely on some mistakes by the leaders.

View attachment 356456
Christmas heartbreak for Devils

It is encouraging we have given Leeds a fight on their ground and I think we were unlucky to end up on the losing side after coming back from two goals down. It will be a boxing day to forget for Martin Callaghan as he got himself sent off for a stupid foul in the final seconds of the first half. Sir Alex was furious with Martin although he defended him after the game which builds up hopes we might keep hold of him beyond this season. I would like to praise another wonder kid for the right reasons though - Keith Sedgemore was terrific today and showed tremendous character to equalize in the second half before Leeds broke our hearts with a late winner.

North-West derby out of the closet

This unforgiving month has made our season even more interesting. Liverpool somehow caught up with us and are threatening our position in the top four. Our rivalry with the Merseyside club has been in the closet for quite some time but it's shaking off the dust as we now need to compete with their expensive team if we want to play Champions League football next campaign as well. Interesting times ahead!

Perfect Christmas - Magpies teach Freedman who is boss in the North East

The real spirit of Boxing day football can be sensed when you take a break from title contender clashes for a more traditional clash with your local rivals. The schedule allowed the fans to take a short trip to relegation struggling Sunderland and they took it with anticipation of an additional Christmas present.

View attachment 356461
Additional present for Geordies today

Sunderland changed managers just before the clash. New man in charge Dougie Freedman afforded a rather bold statement he is looking for a win in an attempt to win over the fans who remain unconvinced about his ability to save the club. Such words would have been arrogant if they weren't hilarious. Although he had the job half done as his underperforming players wasted the first half with boring low-tempo. An upset was never on the cards and Hristov made sure things would be different after the break. Newcastle upped their game two gears to expose the Black Cats' usual excruciating face and fired four past the disillusioned hosts.

View attachment 356462
Fingers crossed this derby is back next season

I hope this result doesn't cost Sunderland's survival in the league though. Derbies like this have rich historical as well as emotional value and it would be sad to see it come to an abrupt end. It will be a race against the odds for them though as the fans have little faith in Dougie Freedman and he has a rich record of relegations in his biography.

Leeds United: top four status under threat - Matteo
View attachment 356495

by Dominic Matteo
As I stated the previous time in my column we were in for grim holidays. Important derby win over rivals Manchester United on Boxing day was nullified quickly with a goalless draw away to Queens Park Rangers and our four game winning streak in the league has come to an end. Both Newcastle and Blackburn keep marching and we are now ten points behind the leaders. It effectively puts us out of that fight for the time being because even wins in the direct clashes won't be good enough to make up for that gap.

View attachment 356504
Spring tiredness could ruin our season

There are more pressing concerns though. Despite losing to us, Manchester United remain close and Liverpool have picked themselves up recently. Both clubs are too close for us to enter 2028 comfortable about our top four status. It is imperative that we build some points between us and the chasing pack as early as possible, January if the opportunity arises. Otherwise we risk missing out on Champions League qualification if we repeat our terrible spring form from the previous campaign.

View attachment 356503
We must look to buy in January

It is peculiar to see teams who have conceded twice or more the defeats we have so close but the Premier League is as interesting as ever. January is knocking on the door and perhaps we may look to bring in a couple bodies. I think we could have done better in the summer transfer window as we lost a bit of depth then and missed an opportunity to get closer to Blackburn and Newcastle - instead we allowed big spenders Liverpool to cut the distance and put unnecessary pressure on the lads.

Liverpool welcome New Year three points off Champions League

Blackburn and Newcastle have been producing the headlines during the entire 2027 - and rightfully so. As much as I would have loved to see us closer to these sides we need to keep working and building. Success is more permanent when you achieve it gradually and after returning to Europe we should aim at Champions League qualification this season.

View attachment 356518
Catching up with our target

Rovers and the Magpies may be on incredible runs but it is impossible to see four teams win all the time so it was important to end the year with as many points as possible and wait for mistakes of those above us. We did that job well and a drop in form for Manchester United put us within three points of a top four position. In fact if we had beaten Rovers we'd be on par with the Devils right now. That's a terrific comeback after the inconsistent autumn we had.

2028 - what lies ahead?

2028 lies ahead. It is full of unanswered question as well as promise. The lads are on the brink of pastures better than they've reached before and while it is still short of our glorious past we are walking in the right direction.

December Watch

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Blackburn (1st; 54pts; +32) - Rovers complete 2027 in a dominating manner with six wins from six games and welcome the New Year sitting top of the league. Their achievement is even more remarkable for they have played four contenders this month and came victorious in all those clashes!
Player of the month: Luca Boccaccini (ST) 8.28
0 Current first team injuries.

Newcastle
(2nd; 51pts; +68) - five wins from five games for the Magpies and they keep their incredible 100% record this season. Although they drop the top position because of Club World Cup duty.
Player of the month: Diego Escudero (AMRL) 8.68
0 Current first team injuries.

Leeds (3rd; 44pts; +28) - decent return in December for Leeds - they are unable to keep the tempo of those above them but 13 points out of 18 on offer are enough to climb above Manchester United.
Player of the month: Phillip Foose (DC) 8.20
2 Current first team injuries:
Diego Herrera (ST) - 4-9 days (torn hamstring)
Alejandro Boyaro (MC) - 6-7 weeks (torn hamstring)

Manchester United (4th; 43pts; +28) - the Red Devils had a flat tyre this month with three straight defeats to Blackburn, Everton and Leeds and now need to look over their shoulder instead of upwards.
Player of the month: Kôtarô Kawaguchi (DC/DM/MC) 8.18
2 Current first team injuries:
Almamy Traoré (AMR/ST) - 4-5 weeks (hip injury)
Gabriel López (MC) - 3-5 weeks (torm hamstring)

Liverpool (5th; 39pts; +17) - the Reds had a hectic schedule with seven league games this month. They achieved six wins in them and only a defeat to high-flying Blackburn denied them perfect record. Nevertheless they close 2027 in style and return in contention for top four.
Player of the month: Juan Gabriel Travieso (DC) 8.06
1 Current first team injury:
Bruma (MR/AMRL) - 3-4 weeks (fractured wrist)

Chelsea
(7th; 32pts; +14) - the Blues conclude an unimpressive 2027 with just 10 points from 18 possible which means they slide even lower in the league table. Failure to win any significant games has been the major disappointment for their fans.
Player of the month: Murat Erdil (MC) 8.10
1 Current first team injury:
Willis Davis (DC) - 9-21 days (torn hamstring)

Other teams to watch:

Manchester City (6th) - the Citizens are still hanging in the outskirts of top four contenders and will definitely play some role in European qualification fight.

Arsenal (8th) - the Gunners are working their way up the table and may still mount a challenge for Europe.

Swansea (15th) - the Swans improve dramatically in December to grab three wins and move out of the bottom three.

Crewe Alexandra (16th) - Crewe fail to build up their decent form and are just two points above the drop.

Middlesbrough (17th) - Boro achieve a vital win in December and somehow sit above the line.

Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa occupy the bottom three. The Black Cats changed managers but that doesn't stop their slide and they drop below the line for the first month since the start of the season. Crystal Palace only pick one win and are three points away from safety. Aston Villa register a win and a draw but only have five points and could probably start thinking about Championship football next term.

Newcastle have announced the long awaited signing of striker Ba. Now relax in your chairs, it's not club legend Demba Ba who scored 429 goals in 432 games for the Magpies. 18 year old Mamadou Ba arrives from US Ouakam in a £250k deal.

Mamadou Ba

The youngster will not be making his debut anytime soon though due to work permit issues. Manager Hristov will instead send him on a long term loan to Croatian feeder club Zagreb or Rad in a bid to secure citizenship. Hopefully Mamadou will return a better player for it and can follow the footsteps of his great predecessor.
