It took six weekend but in near the end of September Liverpool finally recorded a first win in the league. We remain one of five unbeaten sides although our tendency to draw games keeps us in the bottom half of the table and even the win against Tottenham was not enough to climb to a more respectable position.
The good news is Italian strikers Voltolini and Vicentini are finally looking like the partnership we have been hoping to see and both of them got on the scoresheet against Spurs. Something more, they created both goals despite the presence of other key attacking figures like van Bremen and El Alagui. Vicentini's desire to get stuck in the game is a refreshing improvement and Tottenham defenders were forced to commit numerous fouls to stop him. Such passion is commendable and Andrea earned the applause of fans at Anfield. If he continues the same way he will quickly become a fan favourite.
Now that the jinx has been finally broken we can move on to piling up a few consecutive wins and make the unbeaten start count. Kenny Dalglish has declared he wants return to top four during his first full season as an owner and we are still capable of delivering it.
Five on the trot for Rovers as Lennon experiments in central midfield ............................................................................................................ Our lack of depth in MC has been discussed at length and it's probably boring the fans to return to the same topic once again as everyone is well aware of the issue. I will risk scratching it one more time for two reasons - the routine win at Hillsborough doesn't offer much to analyze and Neil Lennon actually used the game to test different options in the center of the park.
First of all let me clarify something. I am not a big fan of playing players out of position and would prefer to have someone more natural brought in. When you force a wide midfielder or striker to cover in the middle they tend to get confused at least a couple times per match and neglect some of the new duties they are not accustomed to and that's asking for trouble. That's why I wasn't thrilled to see Lennon play Osti alongside Espinoza. But I can't deny it worked. The Argentinean was one of the best players on the pitch and unlocked the Owls defense for Boccaccini's goal which effectively decided the outcome of the game.
I still would like a specialist MC brought during the January transfer window although we are stuck with what we have until then. I only hope Lennon doesn't get the idea we can finish the whole season applying the same measure for we will face opposition much tougher than Sheffield Wednesday.
