Blasphemy! A wee club in the north-east threaten sir Alex Ferguson's dominance!

Last gasp win at Old Trafford no less than we deserve

It's never been easy for us at Old Trafford. We have forged some key victories over there in the last couple of years but the lads were always under heavy fire and we were often outplayed and fortunate our class in attack was too much for the Red Devils to handle.

Rovers got out of jail - this time with class

Things were different this weekend. We matched Man United and looked the better side at their own ground. As it often happens it didn't produce a better scoreline and we needed to sweat until a last gasp strike by Can Özdemir finally sealed the win. But then again we expected no less from the current Premier League leaders (they dropped down to third after this game).

Fergie looked to crowd midfield

There was one decisive area that caused us problems. Sir Alex looked to crowd the midfield area and instructed his players to retain possession. While Neil Lennon successfully countered this game plan with numerous thunderous counter attacks I can't avoid asking the question - is our weakness in central midfield the bait we use to our advantage or are we simply waiting to be punished?

Tony Cascarino Commentary

Chelsea's prime goal this season is a top four finish. The team has had enough time to blend together after heavy investment in previous windows and manager Marcelino already spoke about his satisfaction with the balance between experience and talent he has at his disposal. Marcelino is aware it is time to deliver after he has been allowed to work without pressure in a usually insecure position over the past two seasons.

Chelsea's season still a cocoon in the waiting

A shaky start to the season prevented the Blues from walking shoulder to shoulder with the big title favourites although it wouldn't be correct to say they were lagging too far behind either. It was more the case of a cocoon of an unknown specie - only time would tell if it gives birth to a pretty butterfly or some ugly crawling critter the Chelsea fans would want to forget about.

Spurs win positions the Blues well in top 4 race

Striker Brett Palmer, on-loan from Newcastle, made sure the Blues don't drop points against Spurs in the weekend with a spectacular brace. Despite a largely convincing performance it wasn't a breathtaking win but merely enough to see three points in the bag. It does place Chelsea in a great position to attack the top four and that's all that matters.

Michael Toase (DC/DM/MC) - 1-2 days (chest injury)

Blackburn (2nd; 18pts; +16) - Rovers maintain their 100% record in September, too and a win away at Old Trafford allows them to join Newcastle on points at the top of the table.
Player of the month: Savio Barreto (DC) 8.32
1 Current first team injury:
Martyn Flint (D/WBR) - 7 days (flu)

Manchester United (3rd; 16pts; +9) - the Red Devils suffer a nasty home loss to Rovers and surrender top position.

3 Current first team injuries:
Keith Sedgemore (MC) - 2-3 days (bruised thigh)

Shaun Gregory (GK) - 1-2 days (broken finger)
Damion Giddens (MC) - 7-11 days (groin strain)

Chelsea (6th; 12pts; +5) - the Blues suffer two losses in September and miss on a good opportunity to get closer to the leaders.
Player of the month: Hugo Viviano (M/AMR) 7.90
3 Current first team injuries:
Dany Varillas (DM/MC) - 7-9 months (damaged cruciate ligaments)
Willis Davis (DC) - 8-14 days (broken arm)
Fabien Benoist (AMR/ST) - 11-14 days (twisted ankle)

Liverpool (10th; 9pts; +3) - the Reds improve but seven points in September are merely enough to climb to the top half of the table.
Player of the month: Pierpaolo Voltolini (AML/ST) 8.20
2 Current first team injuries:
Eldin Jesenkovic (D/ML) - 5-8 days (sprained wrist)
Juan Gabriel Travieso (DC) - 4-5 weeks (fractured ribs)

Other teams to watch:

Everton (4th) - the Toffees impress in September and surprisingly or not find themselves in the top four.

West Ham (7th) - the Hammers maintain their decent position and their fans are already whispering about European qualification.

Arsenal (8th) - the Gunners fail to build up on the great first month they had and drop five positions down.

Fulham (14th) - the Prem new boys slide a little down in the table but amazingly find themselves above Man City.

Manchester City (16th) - the Citizens hit new lows and are only one point above the drop zone!

Bolton (17th) - freshly promoted Bolton climb out of the bottom three.

Sheffield Wednesday, Swansea and Stoke occupy the bottom three. Swansea and Stoke fail to set the top flight alight with their return and are yet to win a game.

Perhaps nobody expected West Ham to deliver a major surprise this weekend however we still did good to beat the hammers convincingly after their positive start of the campaign. A rare Scotty Walden hat-trick, goalkeeper Villalobos penalty and yet another goal from Diego Escudero sealed a vital 5-0 win which allowed us to stay above Blackburn in the table.

View attachment 362893
Hammers fail to stop us

Rovers have been on a no less impressive streak themselves, managing consecutive wins over Manchester United and Chelsea. It's important for us to build up a big goal difference advantage while they are getting the tough fixtures off the list. Hristov knows this will bring us a minor psychological boost over the reigning champions and the lads are doing a fine job securing it.

Red Devils most likely to spoil top two dominance

It's still too early to write off the chances of the other title contenders although I think Manchester United remain the most likely to give us and Blackburn a run for our money. They might have dropped points already but they are much better this season and we would be silly to underestimate them. Other than that I don't see anyone showing signs of ability to go on a consistent winning streak.

Summer transfers revitalized the team

Gary Neville

Published at 7:31PM, October 15 2028

This is the Manchester United I want to see! Over so long we have been able to produce amazing games and then lose pace and stumble against mediocre opposition. This has cost us the chance to effectively join the title race. This summer Sir Alex Ferguson finally splashed some cash on the market and boy did it made a difference!

View attachment 362934
Summer spending paying back

We spent £114m on seven new players, plus Roland Le Gac on loan. The numerous veterans in the squad have been allowed to take on a rotational role to maximize their contribution and the team has looked revitalized overall. Thevenet (11 games from 11 played) has taken over between the posts. Pettersen (1 game) offers some depth in central defense and Berisha (10 games) fills the void left by the departure of Flint. González (6 games) allows Shoretire to rest every now and then and will probably take over when the veteran decides to hang up his boots. Le Gac (10 games) and Ziya Kas (11 games) introduce some fresh energy on the flanks and Valente (3 games) offers some cover up front.

Fresh energy in this team

One of the cheapest purchases Dario Djokovic is stealing the headlines though. The young Serbian has started 7 games and come on from the bench in two more. He is the club's leading scorer with seven goals and the second best at creating goals with four assists (Amadou topping that chart with six). Super Dario is arguably our best player this season although his large success has been possible because of the massive support from his fellow summer arrivals.

Leeds United: top four return covers the cracks - Matteo
View attachment 363114

by Dominic Matteo
It took us until deep in October and our form is still inconsistent although the early season cracks have been patched up and Leeds are back in the top four. Harry Redknapp has discovered short term solutions allowing us to gather some points but as evidenced in this weekend's game against Fulham the team is struggling to regain confidence and instill respect even in newly promoted clubs.

View attachment 363143
Win over new boys Fulham not convincing

Redknapp has been toying with players out of position and it prevents us from rediscovering consistency. Malick Wade is hardly a right midfielder and will not find it appealing if asked to play there on a regular basis. His qualities created a lot of opportunities by pulling the Fulham defense apart although watching his teammates miss nearly all of them will hardly convince him it's for the greater good.

View attachment 363146
Short term solutions like a tower of cards

If Harry persists to make-do with the formation, he faces a difficult job with keeping the squad happy. What matters now is he succeeded to straighten the ship in the short term and we are just five points off the top. Maintaining or cutting this distance will be key for team morale but another dip in form between now and the end of the year might mean a difficult January if some of our key figures slap in a transfer request.

Rovers barely escape upset after complacent second half at Sunderland
............................................................................................................
By Kevin Gallacher.........iiiiiiiii..........7:44 PM Sunday 22nd October 2028 in Sport
............................................................................................................

We should be beating teams like relegation struggling Sunderland by a mile. The fans think that way, Lennon thinks that way, I think that way and our players think the same. Sadly they accepted for granted the Black Cats would do, too. And after building a three goal lead early in the first half we simply switched off.

View attachment 363181
Fearsome reputation not enough on its own

Normally it wouldn't be that much of a problem. We'd slow down the game, wear off the hosts and eventually score another to kill it off. But whatever Lennon's half time team talk was the players didn't listen. And Sunderland were unwilling to roll over. They took us by surprise after the break and two goals in less than ten minutes changed the game entirely.

View attachment 363179
We've got to thank Black Cats poor luck

The hosts didn't score an equalized but I think it was more due to their bad luck than our good defending. Once again they took advantage of our tired central midfield and held the ball there looking for openings (35% opposed to out 29%). We are still on a perfect run although I got the feeling we are riding our luck at the moment.
