Varillas injury haunts Chelsea players in first loss of the season
View attachment 360787
Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 7:22PM, September 10 2028

Last season Chelsea had to wait until March to record a win in a title contenders clash. It was the main reason the Blues failed to reach Champions League qualification. Memories of this shadowed Stamford Bridge yesterday when Manchester United arrived for a third round Premier League match. The Red Devils had the lead after a first half goal from summer buy Djokovic and despite Chelsea looking the more threatening team looked worryingly comfortable.

Red Devils celebrate at the Bridge

The game was eventually lost. Djokovic went on to score a late second and clinch it for Manchester United. But something else happened between half time and that goal - something that strips the players and Marcelino off any blame. Defensive midfielder Dany Varillas collapsed on the pitch in a relatively harmless situation though his scream of agony quickly alerted the referee, players and fans something very bad is going on. Varillas had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher, oxygen mask on his face. With doubts of a career threatening injury floating in the air both teams understandably lost any mood to play competitive football. Even the fans were not that bothered when Djokovic completed the final score.

Doubts were later confirmed in the hospital. Varillas has suffered damaged cruciate ligaments and will be out for anything between 8 and 10 months, effectively putting an end to his season. It is barely beginning for Chelsea though and they need to move on from this terrible day as quickly as possible.

Newcastle show Citizens money no longer enough to buy success in Premier League

Manchester City launched a spectacular spending spree in the summer securing the services of six top players for a total of £103m. Many expected them to mount a serious challenge and trouble the usual title contenders and with so much quality at their disposal the Citizens should at least cut the gap to the top four. This is why our visit to Al Mubarak Arena was anticipated as potential upset.

Al Mubarak Arena hopes of success on hold

Well, expectations couldn't have been more off the mark. Four quick goals in the first half killed any hopes the hosts had to match us and four more after the break taught them a lesson of humility. There was a time money could buy you success in the Premier League but it is long gone. Traditions, stability, top management and winning mentality are now key ingredients as well as sufficient investment.

Magpies cruise 8-1 against City hosts

Taking a look at individual performances, Dong Dexin answered the glove thrown his way by Blackburn top shooter Boccaccini and grabbed four goals. It is also worth noting Radek Pilar impressed despite manager Hristov asked him to play on unnatural inside forward position. The Czech got a hat-trick against his name and fears we are short on wingers due to injuries now have little ground.

Super Dario quickly becoming the most inspired signing of recent past

Gary Neville

Published at 7:33PM, September 17 2028

When Manchester United announced the signing of Leicester winger Dario Djokovic, the world of football emphasized on the commercial side of the deal. Global sports know other cases of families conquering the summit of tennis and football, the most notable name popping to mind Rafael Nadal and his uncle - a star at Barcelona. So neglecting the football talent in Dario wasn't very perceptive.

Making the step from tennis to football

Several weeks into the season the fans have grown an affiliation with the young Serbian, and quite rightly so after some crucial goals and dazzling displays. Super Dario - as he is called amongst the fans - has clearly established himself as an integral part of this Manchester United side. His ability to play in every position of Sir Alex's attack is merely a bonus to his prolific form.

Time to put out the Serbian flags

Djokovic was the hero this weekend as well when a brace ensured the points would go our way in a tough visit at White Hart Lane against high flying Spurs. Dario demonstrated confidence and killer instinct in the final minutes when Tottenham were looking the more likely side to win it. There is little coincidence in the fact we only had two shots on target and they were the only shots Djokovic produced in the game - both of them finding the net. So get your Serbian flags ready for the next game at Old Trafford!

Leeds United: league season hanging by a thread - Matteo
View attachment 360862

by Dominic Matteo
Five games into the season Leeds are still floating around midtable. It is even more troubling our displays are everything but convincing. The lads had to sweat until the final whistle for our most recent win away to Swansea and we were used to beating this kind of opposition comfortably. It's even more confusing this drop only concerns our league games as Leeds are far more impressive in the Champions League.

Leeds leave fans unimpressed

Some are looking for an explanation in Harry Redknapp's dealings in the summer window. We did lose some key players without replacing them and the squad isn't as balanced and wide as last season. It is even stranger because of prior board statements there is a sufficient kitty should Harry ask for fresh blood. Nobody has bothered to come out and explain why we didn't spend especially on a centre-back although this kitty cannot remain in the coffers in the winter.

Redknapp cornered for results

It is still early days but Redknapp has backed himself into a corner and our season is hanging by a thread. We cannot afford to finish September where we currently sit - otherwise pressure will grow and the fans might turn on the lads. Or the manager.
