Rodgers has been out of work since Liverpool released him due to poor form earlier this season. Prior to the Anfield job, Brendan has managed Swansea, Reading and Watford. He has achieved promotion during his time with the Swans.

Media expectations and final standings:

1. Newcastle (media prediction: 8th) - the Magpies defied all predictions and won the title in a commanding manner to end a generations long title drought.

2. Manchester United
(media prediction: 1st) - the Red Devils surrendered the title but life after sir Alex Ferguson was never going to be easy and we have to say it has been a very good first season for David Moyes at the helm.

3. Chelsea (media prediction: 2nd) - it wasn't the dream return Jose Mourinho would have hoped for but he did produce a solid campaign to start off his second stint as the Chelsea manager.

4. Manchester City
(media prediction: 3rd) - the Citizens fell short of their title aspirations and retaining Champions League quota was not enough for Manuel Pellegrini to keep his job.

5. Tottenham (media prediction: 5th) - Andre Villas-Boas fared just within expectations but Spurs will be left with the sour taste of great success evading them yet another time with the top four in sight until very late in the campaign.

6. Southampton (media prediction: 10th) - the Saints couldn't have wished for a better season as Mauricio Pochettino lead them to Europa League qualification despite predictions of midtable security.

7. Arsenal (media prediction: 4th) - it is the very first time Arsen Wenger has failed to retain Champions League position in the league for Arsenal but the Gunners were never really in the running and will probably be relieved they avoided the implications of facing the fixture nightmare of the Europa League.

8. Aston Villa (media prediction: 16th) - the Villains enjoyed a very positive season despite expectations of a struggle and will even be a little disappointed they couldn't make it to Europe despite being in contention throughout the campaign.

9. Crystal Palace (media prediction: 20th) - one of the greatest overachievers this season as Ian Holloway threw all predictions of certain relegation through the window to secure a very, very solid top half table finish - Palace fans will be sorry to see him go to Swansea.

10. Everton (media prediction: 7th) - the Toffees fell a bit short of expectations after David Moyes left them for Manchester United in the summer but still make it in the top half of the table.

11. Stoke (media prediction: 17th) - the Potters overperformed and were never really in relegation scrap despite pundit expectations at the start of the season.

12. West Ham (media prediction: 13th) - the Hammers had a good campaign just within expectations.

13. Cardiff (media prediction: 19th) - the Welsh club enjoyed a good first campaign in the Premier League and certainly made the fans happy with respectable final position despite predictions for serious trouble.

14. Fulham (media prediction: 11th) - a very strong start for the Cottagers was followed by a serious dip in form which saw them slide down the table as focus turned to the FA Cup final which brought Europa League quota despite the loss.

15. Sunderland (media prediction: 15th) - the Black Cats fared just within expectations - they weren't truly threatened by relegation but failed to impress either.

16. Swansea (media prediction: 9th) - the Swans performed poorly in the league but all is forgiven as they claimed major European glory by winning the Europa League - which will see them play in the same competition next season.

17. Hull (media prediction: 18th) - the Tigers were in deep trouble until very late in the campaign but some heroic performances against top teams allowed them to pull out of the bottom three and secure their top-flight status.

18. West Brom (media prediction: 12th) - disaster struck the Birmingham club as they fared way below expectations and ultimately failed to secure safety.

19. Liverpool (media prediction: 6th) - the Reds were widely expected to challenge for Europe but everything went wrong for them this season and the glorious club suffered relegation to shock pundits and fans throughout the world!

20. Norwich (media prediction: 14th) - the Canaries weren't truly expected to go down but never really convinced and as the season progressed it became evident they would need a miracle to survive - which they didn't pull out.

Newcastle 2013/14 individual analysis

May , 2014

By Kevin Keegan

Now that a glorious season has finally come to an end for Newcastle which not only saw the club break the trophy drought but do it in style delivering a glorious treble of domestic honors, the time has come for me to share my thoughts on the team and the role each of the players had towards this success.

Goalkeepers:

Tim Krul (26)
View attachment 421870
48 appearances, 58 conceded, 15 shutouts, 1 assist, 1 PoM award, 6.83 average rating
The Dutch keeper was instrumental for the aggressive style Dimiter Hristov employs at Newcastle. Don't let the huge amount of conceded goals fool you - it was never the intention to chase clean sheets and the burden of producing strings of saves will be typical for us. Considering the major changes in defensive units in the summer and the total rotations Hristov makes in each game Krul was one of the hard workers behind the stage for the Magpies.

Jak Alnwick (20)
View attachment 421866
4 appearances, 1 condeded, 3 shutouts, 6.75 average rating
The young keeper was rarely given a chance and all his appearances came in the cup games but we have to note his presence in the FA Cup final which was very impressive up until the Magpies conceded a very, very late penalty to allow Fulham to claw it to extra time. This was the only goal Jak conceded this season so we might expect to see more of him in the future.

Central Defenders:

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa (25)
View attachment 421865
27 (3) appearances, 4 goals, 1 assist, 7.51 average rating
Mapou was arguably the best central defender for the Magpies this season. He was extremely influential allowing new signings in defense to settle in while he also brought what the team lacked in previous seasons - a goal threat going forward during set pieces.

Eder Alvarez Balanta (21)
View attachment 421862
33 (5) appearances, 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 PoM awards, 7.41 average rating
Eder arrived for a big fee with the reputation of a wonderkid and went on to live up to this tag. His work in defense was exceptional but he also felt very comfortable on the ball which is a key ingredient to the style Hristov wants his team to play. And he will only get better!

Kurt Zouma (19)
View attachment 421858
19 (5) appearances, 1 goal, 1 PoM award, 7.40 average rating
Teenage sensation missed more than a month to injuries but still managed to impress when Hristov put him on the pitch. It is evident Zouma is a little bit behind Balanta in his development but if we avoid comparisons between the pair Kurt held his own pretty well this season and also justified the big fee that was paid for his services.

Steven Taylor (28)
View attachment 421851
25 (3) appearances, 3 goals, 2 PoM awards, 7.37 average rating
Local lad Steven Taylor never quite made it under previous regimes but Hristov put a lot of faith in him by allowing him to be the experienced player in the heart of defense - to which Steven responded well enough. He was also given license to push forward and score goals and it can be said the style employed particularly suited his own game which allowed him to excel.

Wing Backs:

Gino Peruzzi (21)
View attachment 421850
21 (7) appearances, 1 goal, 6 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.40 average rating
Gino was another summer arrival and cost a very large fee. Despite his young age, the Argentine never crumbled upon that pressure and was the Toon top all-round performer on the wing back position. His end product could still improve though.

Leighton Baines (29)
View attachment 421847
29 (4) appearances, 8 goals, 15 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.38 average rating
Baines was always the most high-profile summer signing Hristov made and he delivered it all on the left side of defense. Goals, assists, set pieces - whenever Leighton played, he was a constant menace to the opposition goal. One of the most efficient players in this Newcastle team.

Alex Sandro (23)
View attachment 421844
16 (7) appearances, 1 goal, 7 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.28 average rating
The Brazil international was unlucky to compete with Baines for the left wing back position and his case wasn't helped by a month-long injury absence but Alex Sandro still managed to prove his worth for the team by delivering a number of key passes. He is obviously not the finished article and his dominant presence going forward should see him add goals to his game but the signs are there he might improve a lot.

Mathieu Debuchy (28)
View attachment 421842
24 (3) appearances, 1 goal, 6 assists, 7.09 average rating
The French international enjoyed a decent season and impressed occasionally going forward but considering the level of competition at his position he should have probably done a bit more in terms of end product. Slightly disappointing from Mathieu.

Davide Santon (23)
View attachment 421841
14 (11) appearances, 2 goals, 3 assists, 1 PoM award, 6.98 average rating
Davide was the utility man for the Magpies this season and had to settle with a number of appearances from the bench which inevitably hampered his form. He wasn't helped by constantly being asked to cover each of the flanks but managed to deliver some goals and assists so I believe his poor rating doesn't do him justice. Whether Davide will be happy with his bench role in the long term is another matter and considering the large number of options at his disposal, Hristov might consider letting him go in the summer.

Central Midfielders:

Moussa Sissoko (24)
View attachment 421840
24 (13) appearances, 5 goals, 10 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.25 average rating
Moussa was asked to play the advanced playmaker role and he made it his own despite competing with club captain Yohan Cabaye for it. The Frenchman was pure joy to watch creating stuff through the middle and it goes without saying his contribution was pivotal for the success the team enjoyed.

Yohan Cabaye (28)
View attachment 421839
31 (10) appearances, 4 goal, 20 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.20 average rating
Club captain Cabaye wasn't as impressive going forward as Sissoko but carried immense set piece threat and orchestrated the passing compartment by creating a large number of goals for the strikers. Whatever you say for Yohan it won't be enough and I think he deserves a much, much higher credit than he's been given.

Vurnon Anita (25)
View attachment 421838
26 (3) appearances, 2 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.18 average rating
Anita was asked to play a deeper midfield role and is one of the few players to fail to grab a goal but his contribution in breaking up opposition play and maintaining the flow of play when in possession was tidy and very useful. I feel achieving such rating in that position says how important Anita was for the team during the campaign.

Cheick Tiote (27)
View attachment 421837
23 (4) appearances, 1 assist, 1 PoM award, 7.13 average rating
Tiote was the other midfielder playing a deeper role and he did most of the dirty work for his teammates. He lacked the composure on the ball Anita had and it affected his performances slightly, but his physical presence completely made it up for that. Solid season for Cheick.

Inside Forwards:

Sylvain Marveaux (28)
View attachment 421836
21 (5) appearances, 9 goals, 12 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.43 average rating
Sylvain was one of the pleasant surprises in the team this season. This offensive brand of football allowed him to flourish and he enjoyed arguably the best football of his career. He shadowed all other inside forwards in the team and was the top attacking player in terms of all-round performances.

Memphis Depay (20)
View attachment 421835
12 (10) appearances, 9 goals, 2 assists, 3 PoM awards, 7.31 average rating
What a debut season for young Memphis! He was slowly introduced by Hristov but showed great quality whenever he played. His set pieces are a great threat and to put it simple, the boy knows how to score! On top of it he can only improve!

Eduardo Salvio (24)
View attachment 421834
34 (9) appearances, 17 goals, 6 assists, 6 PoM awards, 7.22 average rating
Another new recruit, Salvio was lethal on both flanks and finished the season as the club's joint second best scorer. Top quality stuff from the wing wizard as we will remember there were a string of key goals he scored in important games as well. Despite his deceivingly low rating, Salvio was one of the most influential players this campaign.

Hatem Ben Arfa (27)
View attachment 421833
26 (2) appearances, 10 goals, 7 assists, 1 PoM award, 7.20 average rating
Ben Arfa missed two months nurturing injuries but still had his best season with the Magpies so far by creating a great total of goals. One would only wonder how far Hatem could have reached if he was fit during the whole season.

Strikers:

Papiss Cisse (29)
View attachment 421831
37 (5) appearances, 26 goals, 7 assists, 7 PoM awards, 7.33 average rating
Newcastle's top scorer this season. Papiss added to his game though by interacting with the inside forwards and delivering some assists for the team. Massive contribution and huge improvement in comparison to the previous campaign.

Loic Remy (27)
View attachment 421825
33 (8) appearances, 24 goals, 13 assists, 5 PoM awards, 7.35 average rating
Sadly the record of Remy prior to his permanent transfer in January was lost for some reason but I was able to recover it through reports of his stats. And it turned out Remy actually outperformed top scorer Cisse and was even more influential in linking up play and creating goals while scoring plenty on his own. Looking at his stats I can't but admit Remy is major contender for player of the season for Newcastle alongside Leighton Baines and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa!

Landon Donovan (32)
View attachment 421824
24 (20) appearances, 17 goals, 10 assists, 2 PoM awards, 7.05 average rating
Hristov brought in Donovan for his versatility and experience but the American also delivered a whole bunch of goals. He might not shine as much as his fellow strikers in terms of overall quality but his character was an essential ingredient as he often rallied the troops wearing the captain armband in the absence of Cabaye. Very efficient season for Landon, even if his overall rating leaves a bit to be desired.

Yoan Gouffran (28)
View attachment 421823
21 (9) appearances, 7 goals, 6 assists, 7.04 average rating
The Frenchman was often asked to play on the wings and should be considered more of a cover than actual rival for position in the starting lineup. Yoan contributed in a good hard-working manner when called upon even though he should have scored at least double digit goals for his season to be branded successful.

Fan fears resurface as Newcastle begin summer with triple sale

Published at 9:41AM, June 9 2014

It has been a great season for Newcastle and the entire city has been buzzing with anticipation for a long-coveted return to the Champions League and wrestling with the best once again. Many analysts pointed out the massive success last term was very much due to the comparative lack of injuries and not being engaged in European tournaments helped keep the squad fit and fresh. This is why expectant eyes were fixed on how the Magpies would enter the summer transfer window. The common belief is Dimiter Hristov needs to keep his squad in tact and add two or three extra bodies of sufficient class to just keep up with the rigors of the hectic schedule ahead.

That was not the case this morning as the club announced that three key senior players are leaving for pastures new. The first prized asset Newcastle sell is French midfielder Sylvain Marveaux (28) who will reinforce Southampton in exchange of a 8.75 million pounds fee.

View attachment 421812
Marveaux leaves for the Saints

The fans were understandably sad and upset as news of the deal broke out because Marveaux just had the best season in his career and was instrumental on the left wing, especially in cup games. Sylvain spent three years at Tyneside and managed 55 games with 10 goals - with 26 appearances and 9 goals last term alone. Another influential player Newcastle picked to cash in on is strong center back Steven Taylor (28) who has joined Fulham for 8.5 million pounds.

View attachment 421805
Taylor sold to Fulham

Taylor is a Geordie lad and many were happy to see him play such an important role to the club's return to glory. Steven has played massive 205 league games for the Magpies since breaking in the first team in 2003 and was one of the few around to know what this club is really about. This transfer has raised even more concerns as it leaves the heart of defense stripped of any experience. If this wasn't enough, Newcastle also decided it is a good time to get rid of another hard-working player at the peak of his ability in French striker Yoan Gouffran (28) who joins Swansea for a fee of 11.75 million pounds.

View attachment 421804
Gouffran swims with the Swans

Social media was literally flooded with worried fans venting their frustrations, the general discontent united around the suspicion Newcastle are carrying the financial burden of signing a number of expensive players on monthly installments in the previous summer and players will need to be sold just to balance the books while incoming high profile deals to attack the Champions League are highly unlikely with Mike Ashley believing the current squad is good enough. Manager Dimiter Hristov assured the fans this is not the case when approached by the media:

Reporter: This is not the start to the transfer window the fans were expecting, Mr. Hristov! Can you tell us why you let some of your most important players leave when it was more important than ever to strengthen?
Dimiter Hristov: I don't think these transfers have weakened us. On the contrary, I believe Yoan, Sylvain and Stevie had their best campaigns last season and while I will always be grateful for their contribution, they wouldn't get any better. I would also argue that any of them were key players for us. Even Marveaux's record was largely boosted by his extraordinary cup form, but he wasn't any better than the others in the roster really.
Reporter: Aren't you a bit worried by decreasing the numbers when you will need a bigger squad considering the extra fixtures to be played this season? Even if we agree these players weren't essential despite their personal stats suggesting the opposite, they were certainly valuable squad members.
Dimiter Hristov: I don't intend to reduce the group we have here but I also don't envisage bringing too many new faces in. I am more than happy to work with the same numbers I had on the training pitch last season.
Reporter: You are aware these words won't exactly instill hope in the supporters. Doubts are resurfacing that you might not be allowed to spend big on new players as huge flows of money are still going out of the club on deals signed one year ago. Can you promise the fans you will buy this transfer window?
Dimiter Hristov: We are working on new players, of course. It is complicated and I can't go into details right now but the kind of deals I believe would help this club go forward take time.

Hristov and Comolli are keeping their cards close to the chest but sources at the club suggest there is a struggle to convince Ashley money needs to be reinvested in new players. There could be even further bad news as bigger clubs are reported to be lurking for a string of key personnel with Debuchy, Sissoko, Ben Arfa and Yanga-Mbiwa all wanted. There have been no official enquiries for them yet but the market will be moving up soon. Whatever Ashley's intentions for the club are we will find soon enough.

Steven Taylor transfer verdict: 5.5/10 - the tranfer fee merely covered the market value of the player and it leaves the squad one central defender short in terms of numbers.

Sylvain Marveaux transfer verdict
: 5.5/10 - the tranfer fee merely covered the market value of the player and it leaves the squad one winger short in terms of numbers.

Yoan Gouffran transfer verdict: 6.5/10 - the tranfer fee while quite big merely covered the market value of the player and it leaves the squad one striker short in terms of numbers.

Considering this unexpected opening of the summer window, we will once again keep a tracker on the transfer budget Hristov spends as soon as the board agrees on what the figures will be.

Newcastle transfer budget: TBA (29 million pounds received in transfer fees)

Liverpool say goodbye to top flight prepping for mass sales
Multiple transfer requests set to unleash unprecedented exodus

I bet there wasn't a single Liverpool fan looking forward to the summer transfer window after relegation was confirmed on the very last day of the campaign last season. For the first time in its proud history our club will ply its trade in the Championship. And none of the stars so happy to fight for trophies at Anfield is thrilled with the prospect. As expected, the window opened with news of players leaving the club. Liverpool have agreed to let center back Martin Kelly (24) leave for Queens Park Rangers in exchange of a 3.6 million pounds fee. Kelly never established himself as a regular since coming through the youth ranks but his sale is likely to signal the start of a mass exodus.

View attachment 421786
Kelly now a Q.P.R. player

Tireless midfielder Mohamed Diame (26) will not be a Liverpool player much longer after agreeing a 4.2 million pounds switch to Dinamo Moscow as soon as the window opens in Russia.

View attachment 421785
Diame heads for Russia

He will be shortly followed by striker Daniel Sturridge (24) who Liverpool agreed to sell to Dortmund for 9.25 million pounds. The move will go through when the window opens in Germany.

View attachment 421784
Dortmund snap up Sturridge

The power figures at Anfield face a real struggle to keep the best players aboard as a wave of requests for transfers has hit the manager's desk. Simon Mignolet, Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson, Urby Emanuelson, Blaise Matuidi, Daniel Agger, Iago Aspas, Raheem Sterling, Hernanes, Jose Enrique, Keisuke Honda, Mamadou Sakho, Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson, Coutinho and Luis Suarez have all expressed their written desire to leave the club. Most of them are already attracting massive interest from clubs in England and abroad. Sebastian Coates and Oussama Assaidi are also being tracked by a number of clubs and Aly Cissokho is certain to leave when his loan contract expires. The vultures are circling and it is up for the board and the manager to pick up the pieces and make sure we emerge stronger and better to win the Championship at the first take.

Tottenham let midfielder join Hull
Fans expected bigger fee

Tottenham have allowed midfielder Jake Livermore (24) to leave the club and join Hull for a fee of 2.6 million pounds. Livermore is a product of Spurs' own academy and although he featured on occasion last season, he saw his chances reduced with the big spending spree that followed the sale of Gareth Bale last summer.

View attachment 421781
No more - Livermore leaves

The fans have little objection to letting a young player chase a career elsewhere considering how packed Spurs midfield currently is although they are slightly disappointed with the lowly fee the club negotiated.

Jake Livermore transfer verdict: 4.5/10 - all in all okay transfer but the fee could and should have been more substantial.

Hristov delivers major coup in the summer market!

Dimiter Hristov hinted earlier this morning that something is in the pipeline but refused to go into details. Some journalists suspected it was a smokescreen to ease the pressure after selling a number first team players but the latest official club statement has dispersed these doubts: "Newcastle United are honoured to announce the signing of Liverpool superstar striker Luis Suarez (27) for a club record fee of 37.0 million pounds." Further information from my sources in the club clarifies the payment is structured with 15.0 million pounds straight cash and additional 22.0 million pounds due over the next 48 months. Whatever the details this is a captivating transfer which puts Newcastle straight back on the world football map just like the arrival of legend Alan Shearer some eighteen years ago. Suarez needs little introduction but let's remind those who happen to fall from the moon the Uruguay international has 45 goals in 80 caps for his country and scored 88 league goals in Uruguay, Holland and England - 46 of which in the Premier League.

View attachment 421774
Luis Suarez in black and white

Hristov has kept true to another promise he made in March as Newcastle also confirmed the signing of German winger Markus Grimm (16) from homeclub Stuttgart for 1.0 million pounds fee set by a tribunal. Markus fits the profile of extremely promising youngsters Hristov promised to bring to the club after widespread scouting.

Confirmation on Sunara, Ntaflas and Akarsu

With so many up and coming talents arriving at Saint James' Park it is little surprise Newcastle decided to let some of the current crop go. Midfielder Shane Ferguson (22) has moved on to Crystal Palace for 3.5 million pounds after spending the past two seasons on loan with Birmingham.

View attachment 421769
Ferguson leaves for Palace

Usually we'd be disappointed with a club youth academy product leaving but not today. There is nothing to catalyze a long summer for a football fan like a big, big transfer so early in the window. You could see Hristov was aware of this when he faced the media:

Reporter: Incredible coup, Mr. Hristov! How did you pull the Suarez deal out? It was widely expected he would leave for a bigger club.
Dimiter Hristov: Bigger club, come again? How much bigger do you get than Newcastle? To answer the question, we acted fast to make sure the deal was wrapped up before other clubs could move in. The reason we were in such a hurry to sell Taylor, Marveaux and Gouffran was we needed cash in the bank account before the board had even met to discuss our budget for the season. And we managed to do it, barely.
Reporter: Can we expect further fireworks from you this window?
Dimiter Hristov: I won't reveal my targets in the media but yes, it is clear for everybody we are short of a defender and a winger, probably. Damien and I have knocked on a number of doors to check how the market is and you would be amazed, you would be mesmerized with the quality of the players available this summer. I mean players who are beyond our financial reach - I am sorry this is happening a year or two too early for us to take such a financial gamble.
Reporter: One last question. Will you look to sell more players and are you confident of keeping your best players when the big... when the financial powerhouse clubs come knocking?
Dimiter Hristov: I promise that no player I don't want to sell will leave the club.

Interesting approach by Hristov to probably put pressure on big spenders - he's basicly saying "Here, we got Suarez, and boy there are even bigger fish available out there. Who did you get?"

Luis Suarez transfer verdict: 10/10 - world class player on cut-price fee from relegated Liverpool - you just don't get any better than this!

Marcus Grimm transfer verdict
: 6.5/10 - the young German looks a true gem for the future.

Shane Ferguson transfer verdict: 6.5/10 - good business by the club considering Shane would never make it to the first team. The fee is also higher than his market value.

The board have also announced the transfer budget available from this point on and we will keep the tracker on it as promised:

Newcastle transfer budget: 29.85 million pounds (29.85 million initial)

Important Message

As usual after the season I am looking for some feedback about the story to make it more reader-friendly and engaging for next campaign. Any observations and suggestions would be very welcome!

Let me know what you think on any of the following but not only:

- With Liverpool relegated the number of title contenders drops from seven to six. Does covering so many teams deprive the story of enough focus?

- I have stripped the side-articles recently to move along the season more smoothly. I am always looking for ways to balance the format of the story though so let me know which components you enjoy most and want to see or can live without?

- Is there anything else I haven't provided you would like to see that would add to the experience?

- What changes would you suggest to make the story more eye-friendly in terms of layout? Perhaps there is too much information with all the screenshots? Or there are additional things I am missing to include?

Thank you in advance and please remember the essence of the story is to keep the audience engaged and encourage silent readers to participate. It is what keeps it going. If you have any ideas how to achieve that please move forward and share them!

awesome story mate, gutted bout the pool tho tbh.

Thank you, mate! I was surprised to see Liverpool go down, they were so close to an escape but Suarez screwed them.
Do you have any suggestions on the above list?

Magpies turn to yet another Frenchman to replace local lad Steven Taylor

June , 2014

By Kevin Keegan

Few were happy with the recent sale of influential strong center back Steven Taylor to Fulham, especially after he enjoyed his best season with the Magpies. Manager Dimiter Hristov promised a replacement is due and extraordinarily the fans didn't need to wait long for it. Newcastle have just officially announced the capture of enthusiastic center back Raphael Varane (21) from Real Madrid for a bargain 16.5 million pounds fee. Initial reports suggest the club will only pay 5 million up front and the rest will be due over the next four years.

View attachment 421268
Varane at Saint James' Park

Varane is a high profile defender and a full French international with 9 caps to his name despite his tender age. He brings much needed Champions League experience to the roster with Newcastle set for a return to Europe's most prestigious club tournament. There was additional positive news from the club as Hristov identified a few figures to enhance his backroom staff. Here is a list of all the recruitments:

Hristov was evasive about his further targets on the transfer market on the press conference:

Reporter: Amazing piece of business with wrapping up such a quality player for as little money as you did. How could you complete the signing considering a host of clubs would have been interested in Varane?
Dimiter Hristov: It was a bit like the Suarez deal, meaning we had to move fast before the others became aware of his availability. As I said, you would be amazed with the quality of players available in the market this summer. For example we discovered Real Madrid would have been open for reasonable deals for a number of very, very good players from their team. Before you ask - no, I don't think we would be going back to Madrid for more business this summer. But you can certainly expect more fireworks if other clubs enquire about their players.
Reporter: That's three first team players out and two in - still a player short. Will you be looking for a winger now?
Dimiter Hristov: Yes. I'd like to add one or two players to compete for that position, ideally one who would come straight in the first team and one younger star for the future who could do from the bench. We will need a little extra depth to cope with the additional games this season.

I am curious as to who the one or two extra players Hristov targets for the wing will be. It's highly unlikely Newcastle will have the financial muscle to lure Bale or Isco away from Real Madrid, even if they are available so probably those will come from another market.

Raphael Varane transfer verdict: 9.0/10 - bargain price for a top, top defender with plenty of experience is magnificent work on the market, even though I would have liked a little bit more seasoned player to orchestrate a much talented but way too young central defense Newcastle currently have.

As promised, we keep tracking the transfer budget Hristov has at his disposal to replace the departed first team players. The structure of the Raphael Varane transfer fee means 7.25 million pounds will be deducted from the budget:

Newcastle transfer budget: 22.60m pounds (29.85m initial)

MADRID shooter great coup for Villas-Boas

Tottenham have announced the signing of highly popular striker Diego Costa (25) from Atletico Mardid for a fee of 36.0 million pounds. Additional clauses can potentially drive the deal up to 40.0 million pounds which means the club have just broken the transfer record for an incoming player.

Diego Costa arrives at the Lane

Diego Costa is Brazil international with three goals in nine games for his country. He has spent the majority of his career with Atletico but came into prominence last season by scoring the amazing 30 goals in 44 games. Manager Andre Villas-Boas has declared himself proud to have the chance of working with such a top star and is adamant Diego can continue his spectacular scoring form in the Premier League without adaptation time.

Diego Costa transfer verdict: 10.0/10 - if Spurs want to make that final step to the elusive top four or even challenge for the title, this is exactly the kind of deals they need to go after!

Arsenal have decided to cash in on defender Laurent Koscielny (28) as AS Monaco came in with a bid of 13.5 million pounds. This transfer will be hard to take for fans throughout the world as the Gunners have lost one of their most influential defenders. Laurent has been everpresent in the first team since his arrival four seasons ago.

Koscielny goes to Monaco

In the meantime Arsenal have decided to make goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano (28) loan deal permanent after reaching an agreement with Palermo for a 5.0 million pounds fee. Viviano did enough to impress Wenger last season with keeping 12 clean sheets in 16 games for the club. He is a full Italy international and will provide fresh competition for Szczesny between the bars.

Viviano seals permanent move

This isn't really the boosting start of the summer Arsenal needed as the first team needs major overhaul after last season's debacle. Wenger has to realize we will keep sliding unless he spends big instead of selling our better players.

Laurent Koscielny transfer verdict: 4.0/10 - the fee is probably good but until we see it reinvested in a capable replacement this will be a transfer that weakens the first team and that simply isn't good enough for Arsenal.

Emiliano Viviano transfer verdict: 6.5/10 - it is hard to secure a quality second keeper and getting the Italy international one to bring experienced backup certainly qualifies as a good deal.

Tottenham announced the successful conclusion of a deal taking Marseilles winger Andre Ayew (24) to White Hart Lane for 16.5 million pounds. The transfer will taste extra sweet for the fans as Andre Villas-Boas has convinced Ayew during the prolonged negotiations that Spurs are better option than Arsenal after Wenger was the first to agree a fee with the French club.

Ayew picks Spurs over Arsenal

Andre Ayew has been a key player for Marseilles in the past four seasons and grabbed 39 goals in 138 appearances. Manager Villas-Boas will enjoy his incredible versatility as the 47 times capped French international can play anywhere across midfield, as a striker and even provide cover on each flank of the defensive unit. This transfer pulls a shadow of a doubt as to who will now need to leave the club as there are now too many players competing for a wing role.

Andre Ayew transfer verdict: 8.5/10 - if getting a great player for a reasonable price is good, it's even better when you take him from under the nose of your bitter rivals!
