i had a very similar experience to Wayne Bridge during my last year of school, It involved my girlfriend at the time and the captain of the school rugby team, who was arguably the best player too.
I considered quitting the team (rugby was a big thing at my school, we didnt play football and we had a very good team, 4 of whom are now professionals) as i didnt want to stay and potentially force the skipper to fall on his sword, as i knew weakening the team would see me cast as the bad egg, even though i had done nothing wrong.
I decided to stick at it and after a few games the head of sport called a team meeting, having clearly noticed a 'team miller' and 'team jones' divide in training and general school life. After a 2 hour meeting in which everything was laid bare, and the entire team discussed the issue, we patched up our differences and moved on. We went on to have the most successful season in the schools history, going unbeaten in normal school fixtures and making it to the last 16 of the Daily Mail U18 cup; a nationwide school cup competition entered by hundreds of top rugby schools every year.
Now i know i was 18 and it was girlfriends, not wives, but for Bridge to not even attempt to patch things up and work it out for the good of the team suggests to me the type of character he is. Ive never thought Bridge was a mentally strong person/player. I mean he has just turned down the opportunity to play for his country (the highest honour in sport) at a time when he had a serious chance of being first choice left back for the biggest tournament in the world. Personally im glad hes made this decision now, because im not sure i would want a man of his character playing in South Africa.
