Panathanaikos 3 - 2 Chelsea
UEFA Champions League Group Stage Matchday 6
uefa-champions-league-logo_normal.jpg

Panathinaikos-Kostas-Katsouranis_2367893.jpg

Chelsea won their group today despite a loss against a determined Panathanaikos which leaves them without a win in all competitions for three games.

Things started poorly for Chelsea when Azpilicueta's awful header let Leto in and he finished past Petr Cech.

And just 10 minutes later, Panathanaikos doubled their lead through Cedric Kante, as he headed in from a well-worked set piece.

Chelsea reacted well and Aquino, making his first ever start for the club, set Lampard up for Chelsea's first of the game with a wonderful header before Lampard smashed in a volley from 25 yards.

And just after the half-time period, Chelsea had levelled it after a lovely move. The ball was played up by Gourcuff to Aquino, who headed it wide to Jose Bosingwa. He swung in a first time ball to the far left side and Kalou struck it on the volley into the back of the net.

You may have expected Chelsea to push on their, but despite the introduction of Joe Cole and Didier Drogba, the players sat on their lead and were punished when Lazaros Christadoulopolous buried in a rebound to give Panathanaikos a Europa League spot.

But it was another poor performance from Chelsea, and as the next game is Arsenal at the Emirates, they will be hoping to really buck up their ideas.

Arsenal v Chelsea
From the Emirates Stadium, London
FA Premier League, Matchday 17 KO 20:00

Live Text Commentary

19:17: Welcome to this mid-week game between 2nd place Chelsea and 4th placed Arsenal. Chelsea managed to edge these fixtures last season thanks to a brilliant goal from Kalou. Wonder what we're in for today.
19:23: Chelsea have made a few signings over the duration of last month, but of course none of them have arrived at the squad yet. Cesar Azpilicueta's dire performance against Panathanaikos last week means he has gone down to the bench, and Chelsea will be needing a lot better team performances tonight.
19:30: Arsenal are on top of their game at the moment, having won their last 3 games in a row. Chelsea on the other hand are without a win in 3 games, and their team sheet reflects the manager's desire to win tonight:
Chelsea: Cech, Bosingwa, Zhirkov, Terry, Carvalho, Essien, Lampard, Sanchez, Kalou, Gourcuff, Drogba
(Hilario, van Aanholt, Rodwell, Ballack, Joe Cole, Aquino, Ba)
19:37: Chelsea struggling to put the same team out every game at the moment, and that is most likely down to the inconsistency of their strike force, but Drogba gets the nod again tonight. We're 20 minutes away. The other games in the Premier League tonight include the big one between Liverpool and Manchester City, so there will be updates from that match too.
20:00: The players have warmed up and they're all ready to go. The referee gets us underway at the Emirates, and it's a cold rainy night.
20:05: Chelsea get the first attack of the night. Kalou uses some great skill to dodge the tackle of Eboue, before sliding a beautiful through ball into Gourcuff but his shot is saved.
20:07: Down at the other end, Arsenal have won a corner..
20:09: Ohh it's a wonderful ball in from Arshavin and Bendtner heads it against the crossbar. It's out for another corner now.. but it's well dealt with by Carvalho.
20:17: Nice work from the Blues, passing it around the box, and Sanchez plays a great ball into the six yard box, but it is punched away by Almunia for a corner. Lampard plays it in and Carvalho gets a good head on it, but Almunia's in a good position to save.
20:28: Sanchez is a thorn in the side of Arsenal at the moment, constantly terrorising Clichy and he wins another corner for Chelsea there, but it's well dealt with again.
20:35: RED CARD FOR FRANK LAMPARD He can't argue with that. Chelsea look to be on the attack but as Arsenal go to counter, Lampard comes sliding in two footed and takes out Fabregas who is now writhing on the floor. Chelsea down to ten men, and this could turn ugly.
20:37: Fabregas is back up now...
20:43: GOAL Arsenal 0 - 1 Chelsea Incredible stuff! 10 man Chelsea go ahead just before half time, and what a flukey goal that is. Gourcuff is fouled out wide, and Zhirkov takes the free-kick from well over 35 yards, and it goes right into the top corner. Think he was trying to cross it though..
20:45: HALF TIME Arsenal 0 - 1 Chelsea Half time then at the Emirates and it's just got lively towards the end of that half. Question is now, can the Blues hold on to what would be an incredible victory?
21:00: We're back underway then. Hold on tight..
21:14: Very little happening so far.. Yoann Gourcuff's just taken a knock so Ballack begins to warm up on the touchline. May see our first change of the night soon.
21:17: Eduardo replaces Theo Walcott, and Chelsea bring on Michael Ballack for Yoann Gourcuff who had a good game today.
21:30: Arsenal are showing nothing here at the moment. Chelsea with a corner from Yury Zhirkov but Carvalho's header is cleared from the line. Joey Cole is coming on for Sanchez.
21:37: GOAL Arsenal 0 - 2 Chelsea Well, well, well. It's the least these lads deserve. After Lampard's red card they have really rallied and despite being down to ten men, have dominated this second half. Sanchez's shot is saved by Almunia, and a scrabble ensues. The ball is cleared to the edge of the box where substitute Joe Cole arrives and smashes in a low shot on his left foot. Surely that is the winner.
21:40: First we've seen of Arsenal all this second half. Eduardo runs from the half way line before shooting well over.
21:42: Danny Aquino comes on for Salomon Kalou.
21:45: Three minutes of injury time here then. The Blues are heading to a famous victory...
21:48: FULL TIME Arsenal 0 - 2 Chelsea That's the full time whistle and Chelsea have got an invaluable three points here tonight. They rallied despite losing Frank Lampard and although Zhirkov's goal was a little flukey, there was no fluke in Cole's brilliant finish and the Blues will be celebrating all the way back to West London.
21:50: And it's full time at Anfield too where Manchester City, who were yet to lose a game in the Premier League were trounced by Benitez's men 3-0! An incredible victory and it moves Chelsea just 3 points behind them in the league standings.

CHELSEA ARE DRAWN AGAINST HOLDERS BARCELONA IN THE FIRST KNOCKOUT ROUND OF THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Manager Sam Illyroy stated at the beginning of the season that his main aim was to progress as far as possible in the Champions League.

Hopes of beating his personal best (reaching the 1st knock-out round) have taken a big hit. It is unlucky for Chelsea as despite finishing top of their group both seasons, they have been against the two biggest teams in Europe.

The first leg will be at the Nou Camp, which gives Chelsea an advantage. It should be a fantastic tie to watch.

West Brom 1 - 2 Chelsea
Michael-Ballack-celebrate-001.jpg

Chelsea just managed to see off relegation-threatened West Brom tonight thanks to a spectacular Michael Ballack goal.

Contraversy marked the beginning of the game as Chelsea were turned down appeals for what looked like a blatant foul on Gourcuff in the box. Instead, West Brom went to the other end of the pitch and Teixeira scored a goal from range to put the Baggies ahead.

After they knocked Chelsea out of the League Cup and held them to a draw here last season, Chelsea fans may have been forgiven for thinking that they were beginning to be Chelsea's bogey team.

However, Mikel drew the Blues level again only minutes later, after he headed in a bullet from Zhirkov's free-kick as he returned to the line-up following Essien's month lay-off.

West Brom continued to make chances though, and were boosted by the noise of their crowd. If Bednar or Morrisson had a little more composure then they would have been ahead.

But in the end, it was left to Michael Ballack, who replaced the suspended Lampard, to slam in an absolutely beautiful 30 yard shot late in the game to win it for Chelsea. The win puts them top of the league for the first time in over a month, although City have a game in hand.

Chelsea 4 - 1 Blackburn
Nicolas-Anelka-001.jpg

Chelsea dominated this match from start to finish, and could have scored maybe more. The impressive scoreline was added to by some fine team goals.

The Blues were denied a goal early on when Anelka tucked in Gourcuff's through ball, but the linesman called it back for offside.

But it wasn't long before they were ahead, and after quarter of an hour, Ballack picked up where he left off against West Brom by releasing a screamer from 35 yards to put them ahead.

And just 10 minutes later they had doubled their advantage. A corner was headed out wide to Sanchez who dummied his way past Givet before sliding into the six yard box where Anelka was on hand to tap the ball into the back of the net.

Into the second half, and Chelsea produced a fine move which ended in arguably the goal of the game. Mikel sprayed the ball wide right to Sanchez, who took a touch before sprinting past Olsson. He then made it to the byline before fooling the Blackburn defence by dropping it back outside the box and Gourcuff was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

As if that wasn't enough though, Sanchez, the man of the match, then got himself on the scoresheet after great work from substitute Danny Aquino. Aquino sprinted down the left flank before back-heeling it to Zhirkov whose cross met the head of Sanchez perfectly to seal a brilliant performance.

Kalinic pulled back a consolation goal with a wonderful long range finish, but it was not enough to stop the Blues who keep the pressure up on City.

Dude youre doing well!

Off topic: I sent you and leedsunited1987 a visitor message!

a bunch of good results again. Well done! Oh and grats on Milevskyi :P, There are always great players available for free transfers after a few seasons. I remember getting Ben Arfa, Marcelo, Özil and the likes on a free on other saves of mine, always good as they usally don´t want silly wages when they´re almost out of contract.

okie doke, I'll have a gander.

Chelsea 1 - 1 Sunderland
2902513656-soccer-barclays-premier-league-sunderland-v-liverpool-stadium-light.jpg

Chelsea dropped two valuable points at Stamford Bridge today, going 6 points behind City in the table. But it was a game they could and should have won.

They dominated from the off, as you might have expected in their current form, and they made a huge amount of chances, but most of them were wasted by a dissapointing Nicolas Anelka up front. Their striker problems are mounting up at the moment, as all 3 of them seem to be struggling for form.

But in the second half Chelsea took a deserved 1-0 lead thanks to John Obi Mikel's header from a corner. He seems to be in better goalscoring form than all of the strikers for Chelsea.

Disaster struck in the 73rd minute for the Blues however when John Terry was stretchered off with a hamstring injury, and Chelsea have since discovered that he will be out for 6 weeks.

Rodwell replaced him but he could do nothing as Sunderland's substitute striker Fraizer Campbell blasted in a shot from range to equalise.

Chelsea pushed but ran out of ideas towards the end, and the game ended level; a dissapointing result for Chelsea in the last game of the year.

Chelsea 1 - 1 Stoke
FA Cup 3rd Round
y1pGuxvtclcwgkJuCL1O1o_kYMxBMXjToCQ3F2JTyZYoOsFWU26xo3AKqwyFAMDiuRVBHL7HiSI8BE

A second-string Chelsea side failed to hold off Stoke today and Didier Drogba's goal drought, now runs back to mid-October. A poor record for a player of his quality.

Two players made their debut today, Joe Mattock and Marco Verratti, and their was also a place on the substitutes bench for youngster Matej Delac bought from Inter Zapresic and a supposed wonderkid.

But it was the little Italian playmaker who made the biggest impression after half an hour. After setting up a couple of wonderful chances from his corners, Veratti found the confidence to step up and take a free-kick for Chelsea in the 28th minute, and he drilled it low into the bottom corner for his first goal at the club.

Chelsea continued to push, but both Carvalho and Sanchez hit the post after good attempts.

And they ended up regretting those misses when Abdoulaye Faye was given far too much space to bring down a corner, turn and then pass into the bottom corner for the equaliser after an hour.

The game will now go to a replay, and the manager will no doubt be unhappy with that.
