West Ham 2 - 3 Chelsea
CARLING%20CUPwh50.jpg

nicolas-anelka-2009-8-29-9-43-30.jpg

Chelsea dumped local rivals West Ham United out after extra-time in the third round of the Carling Cup today, but they will be wondering how it ever went to extra-time.

West Ham had the best of the opening exchanges, with Zola's team really giving it some and it paid off for them when Franco played in Carlton Cole who smashed it into the back of the net from 8 yards out.

But Chelsea went on to dominate, but they lacked any pace up front, with Drogba starting to show a drop in his once brilliant pace.

In the second half, Drogba and Ashley Cole were replaced by Ba and Zhirkov respectively, and the game then changed for Chelsea. Within minutes of the restart, Kalou sprinted the length of the left flank before whipping in a brilliant ball which Ba passed into the back of the net.

And 5 minutes later, the other substitute Zhirkov crossed in a pull-back from Ba which Anelka had to only head into the back of an open net.

Chelsea then sieged the West Ham goal, but found Robert Green in exceptional form, as he died Demba Ba and substitute Yoann Gourcuff on a number of occassions, as he still awaits his first goal for his new club.

And as fate would have it, West Ham equalised through Odjidja in stoppage time with their only attack of the second half to take it into extra-time.

But the result was never going to be in doubt, and it didn't take long for Kalou to play in Ba again, and he headed in with aplomb to give Chelsea the win.

After being knocked out of this competition by West Brom last year, they will certainly be hoping for more of this in the coming months.

Tottenham 0 - 2 Chelsea
lampard-terry-301109313.jpg

Chelsea put in an efficient performance today against fellow tital rivals Tottenham to see them off at White Hart Lane.

Despite enjoying the majority of possession in the first half, Tottenham created very few clear cut chances and that was to come back to haunt them in the second period when the sensational Frank Lampard played one of the balls of the season through the Tottenham defence for Ba to slide home for his 3rd in 2 games.

And Chelsea sealed the game when John Terry headed in Frank Lampard's free-kick with half an hour to go.

Tottenham rallied somewhat for the last 20 minutes, and even had a goal disallowed, but there was no doubting the decision and there was no doubting the better team as Chelsea headed straight to the top of the league.

In other news, Chelsea drew Manchester City for the 4th Round of the Carling Cup, which promises to be a very fiery tie indeed, and will be live on skysports.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Panathanaikos

article-0-072353A1000005DC-669_306x423.jpg

Chelsea edged out Panathanaikos in a tight affair, but they will be happy to have got their first Champions League win of the season.

Without making too much of it, Chelsea enjoyed the lion's share of the possession in the first half, passing it round and round the Panathanaikos players.

And Sanchez looked the deadliest player for Chelsea throughout the second half, constantly getting the better of the former Manchester City full back, Javier Garrido, but rarely had the final product.

Just before half time though, John Terry scored his second goal in two games after another Frank Lampard corner, and it turned out to be the winner.

Panathanaikos' best goal threat was Sebastian Leto in the last 45 minutes, but after his injury with 10 minutes to go, the result was pretty much wrapped up and Chelsea could enjoy safety at the top of the group, with Hapoel the next opponents to play.

Chelsea face Manchester City at the weekend, and it's a live game.

MARK HUGHES STATES THAT HE WANTS MANCHESTER CITY TO REPLACE CHELSEA AS THE DOMINATING FORCE IN ENGLISH FOOTBALL AHEAD OF THE RIVAL MATCH THIS WEEKEND

In an interview with the BBC, Mark Hughes stated his ambition to replace Chelsea as the big dog in the Premier League by beating them this weekend.

His Manchester City side are currently 2nd in the league, albeit only on goal difference, and he also mentioned that this match would be key to the title race, even this early on in the season.

Cheers mate, glad to hear you're reading :) I'll make sure I can keep it up, although I also want to make sure we're keeping up our brilliant early season form.
Keep reading, huge match up next and it's live commentary.

Chelsea vs. Manchester City
FA Premier Leauge, Matchday 8
12:45 KO

Live Text Commentary

12:02: Welcome to Stamford Bridge tonight, and we've got a **** of game for you. Runners up last season Manchester City play the Champions Chelsea and it's time to see early on what these two sides title credentials are.
12:08: Chelsea have chopped and changed formation wise already this season, but the manager seems to have settled on a sort of Christmas tree formation, with two wide men. And it's the same today as the squad lists come through:
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Zhirkov, Terry, Carvalho, Essien, Lampard, Kalou, Anelka, Gourcuff, Ba (Substitutes: Hilario, Bosingwa, Mikel, Sanchez, Rodwell, J. Cole, Drogba)
12:17: No easy team to beat that, especially not with the form the Blues are in. But City's is nothing to scoff at either:
Man. City: Given, Lescott, Moretti, Onuoha, Richards, Robinho, Barry, Ireland, Modric, Adebayor, Tevez
12:32: Both playing very strong teams as you would expect, and they're out training on the Stamford Bridge pitch at the moment, 15 minutes til kick-off.
12:43: The players are all out onto the pitch, and we're almost ready to go here.
12:45: Lee Lumsden is today's match official, and he gets us underway in West London.
12:47: Chelsea are out of the stocks straight away here, as Zhirkov swings a wonderful ball in from the left but Ba heads it just over. He really is a fantastic replacement to the out-of-favour Ashley Cole.
12:53: Fine stuff from Petr Cech there as he closes Adebayor down one-on-one before parrying the shot with his right-hand.
13:02: Chelsea are committing a lot of men forward to their attacks, and it is leaving them exposed to the counter-attack. Tevez breaks down the left, but his cross is cleared out for a corner...
13:04: Which goes from one end to the other, and it's a goal kick for Petr Cech.
13:11: Oohh wonderful play from Kalou as he sends Lampard down the left flank, behind Richards, but his shot just goes inches wide of the far post.
13:15: Chelsea counter, and it's basically 5 men against 1, but Anelka delays his pass across the pitch, and it ends up being a corner for Chelsea which John Terry heads against Given, before it is cleared away by Adebayor.
13:23: Ba seems to have picked up a knock here, but he still manages to find Essien in space, who dodges past Moretti before firing a wicked long range shot, but Given gets two firm hands behind it.
13:31: GOAL Chelsea 1 - 0 Manchester City And right on half time, Chelsea have gone ahead! And it was an absolutely wonderful pass from Salomon Kalou. He is played the ball from a throw-in, before whipping the ball towards the far post, and Nicolas Anelka is on hand to put the Blues ahead.
13:32: HALF TIME Chelsea 1 - 0 Manchester City And that's the half way point and Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea are deservedly ahead. Manchester City need to show a lot more ambition in the second half.
13:45: We're underway again, as Drogba replaces Demba Ba who picked up a knock in that first 45.
13:48: City bring on Wayne Bridge and Pablo Zabaleta as they look to regain the initiative.
13:54: Micah Richards has picked up an injury for City, and 16 year old Michael Saunders makes his debut for Manchester City at right-back.
14:02: Tevez breaks well, but his shot is well saved by Petr Cech, and that is our first chance of the second half.
14:07: Oooh that had real heat in it, that shot! Zhirkov's corner is headed clear but Essien catches it first time on the volley, but it goes just above Given's crossbar.
14:15: Joe Cole will replace the dissapointing Gourcuff. Not seen anything from him yet that suggest he's worth 23m. Not a single thing.
14:17: And they are forced to make their final substitution too here, as Cesar Azpilicueta comes off injury to be replaced by Jose Bosingwa.
14:30: Nothing really happening now, except that we've found there will be 5 minutes of added time for that injury to Azpilicueta.
14:36: FULL TIME Chelsea 1 - 0 Manchester City And that's it! Mark Hughes' pre-match threats have been quelled by a determined Chelsea side as they go 3 points clear at the top of the Premiership, albeit at the cost of young player of the month for September, Azpilicueta. Still, a crucial win for the Blues, and their manager will be delighted.

Goalscorer and provider celebrate as the two combine to put Chelsea 3 points clear.

Newcastle 1 - 3 Chelsea
gourcuff.jpg

Despite going a goal behind, Chelsea rallied to beat newly promoted Newcastle at St. James' Park today, but the game will be more likely remembered for Yoann Gourcuff scoring his first goal for the club.

He didn't start the game, and Chelsea didn't start very well, conceding after only half an hour, having showed no ambition in the opening 30 minutes. It was a well executed counter attack from Dejaguh, before he cut the ball back and the impressive Gameiro tucked the ball away to make it 1-0.

But plans for an upset were quickly scuppered by Chelsea captain John Terry who headed in Lampard's header for his third in three games!

Then Chelsea cut Newcastle apart, with Anelka playing a wonderful through ball wide to Kalou who crossed it first time into the box, where Lampard's shot was parried by Tim Krul, only for Alexis Sanchez to pounce and score his first goal of the season.

But it took until late on in the second half for Illyroy's record signing, Gourcuff, to find his first goal. After a less than impressive half an hour, after coming off from the bench, he was given his chance when Anelka broke away brilliantly from the Newcastle defence, and dropped it back into the 6 yard box, where Gourcuff pounced to bury the winner.

It's another win, the 7th on the trot in the league, and Chelsea are now unbeaten in 13; a wonderful start to the 2010/2011 season!

looks like you´re back on track, results are getting better now, i hope you can keep em that way :)

Hapoel Tel-Aviv 1 - 4 Chelsea
UEFA Champions League Group G, Matchday 3
champions-league-logo_normal.jpg

429x.jpg

Chelsea gave Hapoel a royal trouncing in the first half of this match today, and came back from Israel strong winners, and top of their group.

It started well from the off for the Blues, as they took the lead after only 20 minutes, as Essien volleyed in a rebound from the corner. And only moments later, Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby (who is on loan at Hapoel) brought down Gourcuff in the box, and Zhirkov stuck the penalty away for his first goal for Chelsea.

As if that wasn't enough, John Terry, who has now scored an incredible 4 goals in 5 games, headed in Michael Ballack's corner to make it three to the good.

Then right on the stroke of half time, Sanchez counter-attacked from a Hapoel corner, before crossing in the box where Joe Cole was waiting to head past a stranded Enyeama.

All credit to Hapoel in the second half, as they gave it a real go, and had Chelsea on the back foot, even scoring a nice goal, as Schechter smashed one in off both posts, after taking on Terry.

But it was a comfortable victory for the Blues again, and their good form continues.

Manchester City 0 - 2 Chelsea
League Cup 4th Round
CARLING%20CUPwh50.jpg

Joe_Cole_Running_.jpg

Chelsea saw off Manchester City in the League Cup tonight after a clinical display, despite Manchester City dominating the match.

Manchester City had all of the opening chances in this fixture, and were constantly bombarding Chelsea's goal, but Cech stood firm on a number of occassions.

Firstly, Robinho and Ribery worked their way into the box before Robinho struck a fierce shot against the palms of Cech, and as Adebayor came to tuck in the rebound, Cech got back across the goal to save again.

They also tried from range, with Barry hitting the bar, but to no avail. As they pressed and pressed, Chelsea looked increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack.

And it was from this that they scored their first goal, with Anelka pouncing on Lescott's mistake to run the length of the field before squaring to Joe Cole to tuck into the bottom corner.

And despite increased pressure, Gourcuff earned a penalty at the other end after going down under a Lescott challenge, and Yury Zhirkov stepped up to score his second goal in Chelsea colors and put them into the 5th round.

It was an assured performance, even if they were under constant bombardment, and just reflects the brilliant form that Cech is currently in.

YOANN GOURCUFF AND JOHN TERRY OUT FOR 3 WEEKS

Following injuries in the game against Manchester City yesterday, Gourcuff and captain John Terry have suffered injuries which will keep them on the sidelines for up to 3 weeks. They will miss the matches against Aston Villa and Everton in the bid to retain the Premier League title.

CHELSEA DRAW BURNLEY IN LEAGUE CUP QUARTER-FINALS

Chelsea should be quietly confident of progressing to the semi-finals next month as they travel to Turf Moor, although they cannot be complacent.

After getting 2 wins against them last season, including that all important 1-0 win at Burnley, they will be making sure they progress to the semi-finals in this tournament for the first time under Illyroy.

There are also rumours circling at Chelsea that they are in the hunt for West Brom left back Joe Mattock. Any further developments will be reported here first.

Chelsea 0 - 0 Bolton
439x.jpg

Chelsea put in a below-par performance today against Bolton, in one of the dullest games of football this season.

Despite the lack of Terry and Gourcuff, one would still expect Chelsea to put in a better performance than they did today, very rarely threatening Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal, and very rarely creating any kind of chances.

Ba came the closest when Rodwell played him in, and he really should have scored, blasting high and wide from 7 yards.

Joe Cole also protested he was brought down in the box, shortly before he was substituted, but there was very little in it and Chelsea wouldn't really have deserved a third penalty in as many games.

But that was as good as it got for this game, and I'm in no doubt the fans would rather have watched paint dry than watch the quality of football on display at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.

CHELSEA SIGN WEST BROM'S JOE MATTOCK FOR 9.25m SIGNALLING THE END OF ASHLEY COLE'S CAREER AT STAMFORD BRIDGE

Joe_Mattock_747617.jpg

Ashley Cole's absence from Chelsea's first team of late, and this signing of Under-21 star Joe Mattock surely signals the end of Cole's time at the Bridge, and it has ended on a sour note.

But Joe Mattock is very highly viewed by coaches across England and many view that he will be the number one left-back in England in the next few years, although time will tell if he can oust Zhirkov from that position at the moment.
