Sunderland 0 - 2 Chelsea
Chelsea kept up the early pressure after a professional display against Sunderland tonight. Mikel managed to make the starting line-up despite the injury he picked up last weekend against Portsmouth, and had a good game.
The game took a long while to get going, but Chelsea did well early doors to keep possession. However, they were slack up front, with Nicolas Anelka rarely reacting and Demba Ba spurned a number of good opportunities.
But in the 46th minute, right on half time, Deco and Lampard opened up Sunderland's defence with a nice one-two, before the latter smashed the ball home to give Chelsea the lead into half-time.
In the second half, Sunderland tried to show some ambition, but were lacking anything up front. Darren Bent was very isolated up front, and was kept quiet by some brilliant defending by Alex and Carvalho.
On 70 minutes, Jack Rodwell replaced Mikel for his debut, and it was him who set up Demba Ba for the winner in the 87th minute, playing a brilliant through ball into acres of space, where Ba slotted past Marlon Fulop, who in his defence had been having a very good game.
A very encouraging performance for Chelsea, and they will need it, as they go to the Emirates in the next game. Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa will also be fit for that game.
