FC Porto Finally Lose

Gladbach 3 FC Porto 1

De Jong '29 '84 Danilo (OG) '54
Iturbe '62

On a cold night in November FC Porto's long unbeaten run came to an abrupt end at the hands of underdogs Gladbach. Going into the game Porto were high on confidence but a brace from De Jong and an own goal from Danilo meant that Price' team left Germany with nothing. Despite the defeat Porto still sit top of their group and their future in the competition is still in their own hands.

FC Porto - Return To Glory

November Sees FC Porto make league progress!

With 3 wins out of 3 in the league November was a month that Porto will remember mostly for their league form. In total Price' boys managed to notch up 4 wins and a draw in their 6 games over the month. Their only defeat of the season so far came in this month as Porto were powerless to resist the superior cutting edge of Gladbach in the champions league. Porto managed to score an impressive total of 14 goals in the six games but Price is likely to be dissapointed with the 7 goals conceded.

Premier League

FC Porto 3 Vit Guimaraes 0 Goals: Rodriguez (2), Bony

Beira Mar 1 FC Porto 3 Goals: Bony (2), Rodriguez

FC Porto 2 Olhanese 1 Goals: Bony, Alex Sandro

Taca De Portugal

Pampilhosa 1 FC Porto 4 Goals: Rolando (2), Martinez, Emidio Rafael

Champions League

Gladbach 3 FC Porto 1 Goals: Itrube

Juventus 1 FC Porto 1 Goals: Bony

Player Of The Month

This months games were dominated by two Porto players, Wilifried Bony scored 5 goals over the month and showed some very very impressive performances. However he was slightly outshined by his teamate James Rodriguez who didnt only score on 3 occasions he also layed on 4 goals for his teamates. The month was also significant for Rodrigues as he score 5 times for his native columbia in 3 appearances.

So im glad to see some people are enjoying my story as much as i am. Safe to say this is my favourite save so far, but im wondering what people actually want to read about? Other than big games and monthly progress?

I was thinking of reporting on the progress my loan players have made at the half way stage? Possibly an analysis of player performance to this stage so far (Goals, Assists, Average rating etc...).

Any suggestions or requests as to what people want to see at this stage would be great

Price' Selection Dilemma

With Qualification from group F of their champions league group confirmed Mr Price now faces the age old dilemma of whether to rest some of his stars for their final game of the group at home to Man City. Its clear that resting players would be beneficial to the club in the long run but the faans would be less than pleased at seeing their key players rested and the team slip to second in their group.

Tonight were asking for your views on this matter. Should Price rest his star players for the latter stages or is it key to finish top of the group? Post to let us know...

FC Porto Agree Fees For Midfield Duo

Even in early December it is clear to see that Mr Price knows exactly where he wants to strengthen his squad as he confirms the capture of the midfield duo Simao and Bressen. 24 year old Mozambique international Simao will sign for a reported inital fee of 1 million pund from chinese team Shandong, with the fee rising to around 2 million depending on appearances. It was also revealed today that a deal to sign the Belarus international Bressen from FC Bate was struck months ago and that both players would be joining the Portugese league leaders in January.

The signings clearly show that Price is concerned as to the depth of his squad which is understandable when you consider they are competing in all competitions. Simao in particular will please Price as he will be eligable to play in European Competitions.

Fabiano Rewarded With New Deal

Porto Keeper' Fabiano was today rewarded for his fine form this season with a 5 year contract worth an estimated £2 million. Fabiano has kept Legendary Portugese Keeper' Heilton out of the squad from the very second Price took over at the Estadio De Dragao 5 months ago. It was specualted that price would look outside of the club for his number 1 keeper' but it seems the answer to his problem appeared from within the walls of the club.

FC Bayern To Prove Stern Test For Price' Boys!!

The draw for the 1st Knockout round of the champions league' main talking point was the clash between German and Portugal league leaders FC Bayern and Porto. Price has already mastermind his teams successful path through a tough group and will now have to gear his team up for a stiff test in the knockout round. The first leg will be at Estadio De Dragao which means Porto will have to be at their best to take a valuable lead into the away leg.

This tie should be one of the champions league great encounters and press and pundits alike are already licking their lips at the possibility of FC Porto taking another scalp in their pursuit of glory.

Do you think FC Porto can pull off another cup upset against one of the competitions favourites?

December Sees Porto Advance on All Fronts

FC Porto continued their brilliant form into the christmas period by advancing to the next round in all comptetitions. The club managed to rack up an impressive 4 wins in their 5 games with the only loss of the month coming at home to Manchester City in the champions league in a game where Price rested many players. The month saw Porto score a total of 10 goals while letting 4 in at the other end. One main talking point of the month was the emergance of Adrien as a key figure at the club, scoring twice and appearing in all 5 games.

Premier League

FC Porto 1 Gil Vicente 0 Goals: Bony

Braga 0 FC Porto 1 Goals: Rodriguez

Taca De Portugal

FC Porto 2 Vit Setubal 0 Goals: Valera, Rodriguez

Champions League

FC Porto 2 Manchester City 3 Goals: Bony (2)

Portugese League Cup

Uniao Madeira 1 FC Porto 4 Goals: Bony (2), Moutinho, Adrien

Player Of The Month

The month was dominated by one player in particular for FC Porto, and that play was Wilifried Bony. After being publically criticised by his manager at the beggining of the month the striker clearly reacted in the way Price had intended. Bony contributed 5 goals over the course of the month as well as claiming the African Young player of the year at the Ballon d'or awards. Bony has proved a very popular acquisition since signing in the summer.

FC Porto Take United Youth Star On Loan

As the transfer window draws to a close it seems John Price has made a move to cover his star striker Wilfried Bony's trip to the African Cup of nations. They have taken Manchester United Youth Prospect Angelo henriquez on loan until the end of the season. Its believed that henriquez will figure in the weekend game againt Rio Ave, whether this be from the beggining or off the bench.

Henriquez joins Bressan, Simao, Romario, Meira and Xavier as the players signed during the winter transfer window taking the clubs total spending for the year to just over 20 million. With just days left in the window the speculation is that Price is now happy with his squad and wont be dipping his toe into the market again.

Price Talks Candidly On Tactics

In a rare television interview with Luis fernandes to be aired later on in the week FC Porto manager spoke openly about the tactics that spearheaded his teams progress in all competitions this year.

4-2-3-1 Narrow (31 Games, 25 Wins, 3 Draws, 3 Losses, 74 Goals, 24 Conceded)

Luis : Why 4-2-3-1?

Price : 'Using a narrow 4-2-3-1 formation allows the team to split into 2 seperate units. Although all players are expected to contribute towards both attack and defence phases of play having 6 players in the back unit of our team allows us the stability to ensure our attacking players can get their job done'.

Luis : So how does the defensive unit work?

Price : 'Well the defensive unit is made up of 6 players, 2 Centre backs, 2 full backs and 2 defensive midfielders. The centre backs are restricted in their movements and are encouraged not to venture over the half way line apart from set pieces. The full backs are expected to carry out a full 90 minuted up and dpwn the flank, their main focus is to defend but they are encouraged to get forward and support the attacking unit as often as possible. Finally the two centre midfielders main focus is to shield the back line, with one out and out defensive midfielder who is restricted with his forward movement and another Deep lying playmaker who will join up with the attacking movemnt whenerver possible'.

Luis : And the attacking unit?

Price :
'Unlike the defensive unit, the attacking unit are less restricted with their movement, all 4 players within this unit of the team are given as much creative freedom and license to roam into different areas of the pitch as possible. The 3 attacking midfielders will change position throughout the entire game in an effort to pull opposing defenders away from their positions and therefore creating holes that we can exploit. The main striker provides a target for all players to aim, I use a main striker who carries all of the attributes of an effective target man, poacher and playmaker when possible'.

Luis : You mentioned Creative freedom and Roaming?

Price :
'Well as well as having their roles within their units of the team all players are given a number of instructions that they will need to carry out as one whole unit for the team to work effectively. We use a very fluid style of play that expects every single player to contribute to all phases of play as much as possible, this is combined with an attempt to control the tempo and possession of play from the beggining to the end of the match. As far as creative freedom and roaming go we allow our players to be as expressive in these areas as possible which in turn helps them contribute to all phases of play efficiently'.

Luis : Anything further?

Price :
'The main key behind the philosophy that my team uses is making sure the correct players are in the correct position, there is no use putting a square peg in a round hole. Each signing is carefully selected to ensure they are completely suitable, if not adaptable to play the designated role'.

Well clearly Price is happy with the way in which his team is playing at the minute and with his win ratio its no surprise why. It remains to be seen whether other teams in Europe can adapt to holt this style of play and force Price to change his tactics

FC Porto March 8 Points Clear

January proved to be another great month for FC Porto in the league as they capitalised on SL Benfica's bad form to pull out an 8 point lead at the top of the table. Porto won all 4 of their league games in the month of January giving them a total of 4 wins in 7 games for the month scoring 16 goals but conceding 5 along the way. January also saw debuts for Simao and Bressan who were signed during the month, the two midfielders added depth to Prices already strong midfield.

FC Porto 0 Olhanense 0

FC Porto 4 Vit Setubal 1 Goals: Iturbe (2), Bressan, Kleber

Player Of The Month

It was a month Price had probably dreaded, with Bony going away with Ivory Coast he was probably worried that his firepower would follow him. Luckily this wasnt the case as Wellington Nem and Kleber chipped in to ensure that January was a happy month for Price and FC Porto. The most impressive performer however was new boy Ranan Bressan, contributing 4 goals and 2 assists in 6 appearances this month. What made the stats even more impressive was that he only made 1 starting appearance, the rest were from the bench. It seems this free igning was a shrude piece of business by Mr Price.

January Transfer Round-Up

This January transfer window wasnt a particularly busy one across the globe, however FC Porto did secure the signings of 5 players during the course of the month. As well as the much publicised signings of midfield duo Bressan and Simao, Price also signed 3 players for the future. Romario, Xavier and Meira are all aged 18 and under and were clearly signed with the future of the club in mind. Xavier and meira were immediately loaned out to local lower league teams in order to gain first team experience. Price was said to be happy with his dealing and was quoted as saying he was 'satisfied' with the depth of his team.

Porto Confirm Capture Of Italian Striker

After months of specualtion on the future of Mattia Destro he has finally put pen to paper on a 5 year Contract with FC Porto. Destro will sign in the summer on a free and will provide what some people will call much needed backup to their main hitman Wilfried Bony. In a press conference called to confirm the transfer Price was more than upbeat about the signing.

'I am over the moon to make Mattia an FC Porto player, he is a player we have been tracking for a number of months now and had to swoop promptly to ensure that his services werent secured elsewhere'

FC Porto fans must be very excited about the new signing as it shows Price is assembling a squad capable of attackinh Europe.

February Proves a Tough Month For Price

February turned out to be Price's most testing month to date at FC Porto. With only 1 win in their 4 games and the indignity of being knocked out of the league cup at the hands of Braga its safe to say Price will want to put this month behind him. The only posotive to take from the month was the growth of their lead a top of the table which stretched to 10 points. Even the return from international duty of Wifried Bony couldnt stop them losing the home leg of their last 16 champions league clash with FC Bayern and Price will now have his work cut out to advance in this cup in March.

Premier League

Estoril 1 FC Porto 2 Goals: Bony, Rodriguez

P Ferreira 1 FC Porto 1 Goals: Bressan

Champions League

FC Porto
0 Bayern Munich 1 (1st Knockout Round)

Braga 2 FC Porto 2 (Braga win on penalties) Goals: Bony, Nem (Semi Final)

Player Of The Month

During a tough month for FC Porto there were no individually brilliant performances, however the most consistent performer was once againy their star man up front Wilfried Bony. Scoring twice in 4 games it was the Ivorian thatgave Price the only thing to smile about this month.

Price Signs 2 year Contract Extension

With only 4 months left to run on John Price's 1 year contract at FC Porto their was large amount of specualtion as to whether he would be handed a new contract, today those questions were answered. FC Porto were proud to announce that Price signed a 2 year extension to his contract that will see him with the club until the summer of 2015. Price refused to release a statment regarding the extension as he refered to the deal as a formality and didnt wish to disturb the flow of the team by airing personal matters.

Porto's Improved Youth System Finds a Couple Of Gems

The work Mr Price put in to ensure that his youth system had the best chance of producing great youngsters has taken its first steps towards success. The new youth intake has uncovered a very promising pair of players. A striker by the name of Marco Luis and a defensive midfielder named Jose Maia have been earmarked as first team players of the future. Price is said to be excited by the prospects and we are very much looking forward to seeing their progress.

Dip In Form Continues For Porto

The dip in form that FC Porto have been suffering since the turn of the year continued into March. The five games that Price took charge for this month led to 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss in which Porto scored 5 and conceded 3. The month also saw the end to their push for the champions league title as they were unable to overturn a one nil first leg deficit.

SL Benfica 1 FC Porto 1 Goals: Nem

FC Porto 1 Sporting Lisbon 0 Goals: Moutinho

Vit Guimares 2 FC Porto 1 Goals: Adrien

Player Of The Month

After a second consecutive month of struggle for FC Porto Mr Price found it difficult to pick out one player who performed above and beyond their usual potential. This month however Price gave the award to Fabiano his Brazilian goalkeeper who made the month a little less painful than it could have been.

Porto Claim Title with time to spare!!

It was the moment John Price dreamt of when he took over as Porto manager in July last year and today it finally came true. FC Porto won the Portugese Premier League title with 3 games remaining and Price was over the moon with his teams efforts. 'This is exactly what we wanted when we began the season, but the work isnt done yet. There is still 3 games left in the season and we want to finish the league on a high'.

The FC Porto manager will put off celebrating until his team have finished the season to ensure they dont let their current form dip.
