clough. i have no option, even as a united fan, i cant choose ferguson even if he was on the list. i get the clough stories off my dad all the time. dad was born and bred a forest fan. he was a youth player at forest and was in the reserves and sat on the bench a handful of times as a 20 year old for clough in 77/78 season wen they won the old div 1. dad then did both his knees in and was forced into early retirement just as clough was taking forest to the height of europe.

dad likes to mention clough at every opportunity. in fact, wen united won the treble in 99 i awoke the next day to find dad had pinned his prized 'double european champions' forest flag (signed by the 1979/80 squad) to my wall just to let me know who was the greatest.

whilst i did inherit dads ability on the field ive also inherited his knees........

its a disgrace that jock stein the pervert is on that list . OOOO BIG JOCK KNEW!!!!!

I know as soon as i seen this thread the Peado jokes would come into it lol. Really not old enough to have a valid vote in this. Looking at Clough i cant really see why he is dominating the vote when kiddy fidler Stein,Busby and Paisley are in there. Even Herbert Chapman

lol i doubt it's true i think it's just something everyone says to wind up Celtic fans and they get right ****** off about it

I'm sorry, but surely and clearly Sir Alex Furgeson...

To do what he has done in the modern game in without compare

yes how can someone win so many trohphies with a club that was already one of the best in the world, and with all that money, i cant believe he has been sucessful :P

I think i already made myself clear that only managers who are not still managing would be in the vote.

My first choice would have been sir alex but as you said your not adding managers who are still managing i went for clough as i always say hes the closest to him in achievements in my opinion. However Sirr Matt Busby also done a outstanding job.

i went for busby to do what he did with man utd was amazing

no alex ferguson? i support arsenal, but what alex ferguson has achieved is and must be as good as those managers mentioned there

we weren't even close to being best in the world when he took over. ferguson is god. still haven't voted yet. pondering the decision.

Clough and I was gonna write a big explanation to answer why to some of those who probaby dont know but this is better and still makes me cry:
"Cloughie" by David Prouse
What made him so endearing is elusive to explain,
This tyrant in a sweatshirt barking orders in the rain.
Today he offered vitriol, tomorrow marzipan,
A paradox, a puzzle but a diamond of a man.

When the Gods apportioned modesty, one youngster wasn’t there,
He was in the queue marked confidence, receiving twice his share.
With two good feet beneath him he considered it enough,
And so was born the character we know as Brian Clough.

Young Cloughie did things his way, for no-one showed him how,
Emerging from the backstreets like a blossom on a bow.
Becoming proud and peerless as a hero of his time,
And then, one tackle later, down and out at twenty-nine.

Where others might have wilted or nestled in their grief,
Cloughie found salvation in his cocky self belief.
Come set-back or adversity, a man is still a man,
So it was, as one dream ended, that another one began.

Reality was Hartlepool, the lowest of them all,
In the Fourth Division basement with their backs against the wall.
All patchwork roofs and puddles and frostbite in the shade,
It was hard and it was humbling, but the boy would learn his trade.

Along came Peter Taylor and the dugout was complete,
Two canny minds would meet and merge to share the judgement seat.
Two mop and bucket soldiers to pound a broken drum,
But the cavalry would gather and the glory days would come.

For Cloughie had a quality no training could provide,
The gift of lending common men the jauntiness of stride.
Players tapped abilities they didn't know were there,
And good ones climbed to greatness on a goading and a glare.

Cloughie's team played football in the manner meant to be,
A joy for those who wore his shirt and those who came to see,
No arguments, no ego trips, no stars to shine alone,
As Cloughie scolded, Cloughie scowled, and loved them as his own.

For behind the bullish phrases, all the arrogance and pride,
There beat a kindly human heart, as deep as it was wide.
Deserving of an epitaph, significant but sad,
Just the greatest England manager that England never had.

your still not the best in the world..... and manchester united were winning trophies before fergie took over and were still a huge club...

I know you only wanted to include managers that are no longer managing, but why? Fergie should be a part of that list, whether he's still managing or not.

Clough was better than Fergie if hes in the mix or not.

Clough won the European Cup twice in two years with Forest

Fergie had all the money in English Football and took 20 years to win it twice!

Paisley. He was the chap who was managing against Clough in his prime (that's before Clough really went loopy on the booze in the eighties and became a sad pathetic shambling figure on the touchline) and did better. Paisley's Liverpool was the model for Sacchi's great teams, didn't rely on drugs to perform (sorry Michel's Ajax) and was the most successful British team ever. In 9 years, Uncle Bob won 6 league championships, 3 European cups (two back to back) and a UEFA cup. And became a standard for the rest of world football in how to play the beautiful game. He was humble, witty and a working class hero. He was a superb man manager, excellent in the transfer market (sell Keegan, buy Dalglish!) and played a major role in introducing 4-4-2 into English football.
