no problem mate didnt mean to seem to be having a go or anything is just a disagreement at the end of the day aint it ;)

I'm surprised Sacchi hasn't got any votes considering virtually every successful manager since Sacchi has copied a part of his tactical philosophy

I love Sacchi. I love his style of play. But even he acknowledges his debt to Liverpool under Paisley in influencing how he wanted his team to play. Sacchi was a great manager. Just not the greatest. There's no Lobanovsky on the list either - and not only was he ludicrously successful with Soviet teams but also a genuine innovator in modern football whose ideas every team now uses, even if they only look at Prozone stats. Kind of surprised that Clough is getting so many votes considering how he only won the league twice (in a couple of decades in management). But I suppose he's a popular figure for many and the recent film hasn't done any harm.

in all fairness he won two league titles with small clubs and with forest he won the european cup 2 years after he had got them promoted to div one - no one else on that list can boast of such a stat.

Also was rather hampered in later years since he drank like a fish

In fairness though, Derby were the Chelsea of the day, and he was hardly frugal when Forest won the league either. He was spending big money for the time. Not trying to diminish his accomplishments but put them into context. Great managers should leave a legacy for future managers to build upon.

in comparision to the big clubs of the day (leeds, liverpool, man city etc). He wasn't spending that much. Also he achieved much more rapid success than Shankley or Revie ever did. In addition, he won a European Cup something Shankely nor Revie never achieved

Shankly came close to the European Cup. The referee for the Inter game in Italy was one of those known to have been taking money from Italian clubs in European games (true fact not sour grapes heh). Sure a Leeds fan will be able to say whether or not they suffered from similar 'odd decisions' during that time period. Interestingly, it was the English clubs who started to dominate Europe once the dodgy refs had been revealed in a newspaper sting in the 70s.

Had a look at some quick transfer figures, and you're partially right about the spending. As far as I can tell, and with various caveats attached, it seems like Shanks and Clough were spending roughly the same amount of money. But then I think that supports what I was saying about Derby being the Chelsea/Man City of the day. Clough certainly didn't operate on a shoestring budget during his successful periods.

out of all the players that started the 1979 European Cup final only two out of the starting eleven were brought with signficient money spent. The other nine were either there before or picked up on cheap transfers.

This hardly equates two a massive outlay on transfers.

Ah, I was comparing the Shanks and Clough (at Derby) time periods. If you want to compare with Paisley, then Paisley equals his European Cups back to back, adds another European cup, throws in a Uefa, and then puts more league championships on the table. Wasn't Francis the British record signing in 1979 in any case? ;)

paisley is easily the best manager
but on the other hand shankly brought lfc to life and he had a great personality
PAISLEY
YNWA
i dont like him but fergie is an amazing manager he made utd what they are today
and also the late Bobby Robson (RIP) he was immense and he made various clubs proper teams

Where's the legendary Sir Bobby Robson here? surely he deserves to be up there as one of the worlds greatest managers ever :)

didn't paisley just inherit shankleys team? he didn't have to build them up like clough had to do at forest

Also as pointed out before francis was only one of a couple of players which clough spent a signficient amount of money on, unlike liverpool

clough for me though im suprised sir alex isnt up there
