WIGAN 1 – 1 ARSENAL

The Gunners took an early lead but were pegged back by Wigan Athletic in the final 5 minutes after being reduced to 10 men with a quarter of an hour remaining.

A struggling Wigan hosted Arsenal, and it was clear from the start that Wigan were going for a defensive approach to contain an attacking opponent. Arsenal had the first chance of the game after 12 minutes when Robin van Persie found space behind the Wigan back line, but could only manage to hit the woodwork.

Arsenal made Wigan pay on after 34 minutes when Gervinho made a powerful run from midfield, cutting inside and passing the ball to a wide open Andrey Arshavin who side footed the ball past Ali Al-Habsi.

Gervinho has made a strong start to his Arsenal career

Arsenal, and van Persie in particular continued to cause Wigan problems, and a strong shot from the top of the box smashed against the woodwork again as Arsenal began to look desperate to grab another goal.

Wigan began to come out of their shell, but after a turnover in Arsenal’s end, Wigan defender Piscu brought substitute Chamakh down from behind, and was sent off with 15 minutes remaining.

With just 5 minutes remaining and Arsenal looking vulnerable, a set piece saw Wigan level the game through an Antolin Alcaraz header. Left back Cheik M’Bengue was the culprit of poor marking, as has thus far had a horrid start to his Arsenal career.

Dropped points for Arsenal in a game they really should have wrapped up early in the game.

ARSENAL 5 – 0 OTELUL

Arsenal’s first game of the Champions League kicked off with a bang thanks to an early Robin van Persie brace and two late own goals.

View attachment 215639
Robin van Persie's early brace put Arsenal in the driver seat leading to a comfortable victory

A few changes to a lineup which struggled against Wigan just three days previous, as Theo Walcott and Gregory van der Wiel got the nod in the starting 11.

Van Persie opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a 25 yard belter into the top corner, and then scored his second goal with his right foot from the top of the area.

Arsenal went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, and Gervinho gave the Gunner’s faithful more to cheer about just 1 minute into the second half. Walcott with some great work to make space for himself and Gervinho had little to do but pass the ball into the net.

Per Mertesacker was the last player in red to nod the ball towards goal off Arteta’s corner and Sorin Petrescu knocked the ball into his own net. Simion Tuculeanu scored a second Otelul own goal of the night after Mertesacker defelcted the ball towards the Otelul goal again.

Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott both gave strong performances and Per Mertesacker was a threat all night from set pieces, and may earn a chance in the first team in the league.

ARSENAL 2 – 1 STOKE CITY

An strong start to the game from the home side sees 10 man Arsenal sneak a win in over Stoke City.

Theo Walcott and Per Mertesacker were given starts after a strong performance midweek, while Stoke went with an attacking pair of Ricardo Fuller and Peter Crouch.

Robin van Persie’s first time shot in the 7th minute gave Arsenal a 1-0 lead, Aaron Ramsey the creator after good work with Arteta in midfield.

View attachment 215646

A rough 30 minutes with tackles aplenty saw Alex Song receive marching orders after a tackle from behind on Fuller. Arsenal were forced to completly change their shape as winger Walcott was sacrafised for Steven N’Zonzi to fill the void in midfield.

Arsenal strengthened their lead 3 minutes from the halftime whistle when van Persie scored his second with a lovely free kick from 20 yards out.

Stoke were forced to come out and attack in the second half, and they did. Arsenal were beginning to tire and a bit of magic from Ricardo Fuller saw the striker smash the ball from outside the box past Szczesny to give Stoke some hope.

Stoke kept up the pressure for the final 30 minutes, but Arsenal remained strong and came away 2-1 victors in a gritty performance.

CHESTERFIELD 0 – 3 ARSENAL

An inexperienced Arsenal side came away 3-0 victors over League 1 side Chesterfield in the Carling Cup.

With many of the reserves and some of the youth players getting run-outs for the night, it was never going to be a dominating performance from the Gunners. Promising youngsters Alex Chamberlain and Ignasi Miguel all made the starting lineup, while Yaya Sanogo started from the bench.

Arsenal stared well through a Yossi Benayoun freekick on 5 minutes from the righthand side which was looped over the wall and past the keeper.

Scott Sinclair was in good form to begin the game, and was the playmaker in Alex Chamberlain’s first goal for the senior team on his debut as the youngster put home a lovely cross by Sinclair.

Near the end of the half, Sinclair went on another dazzling run and was brought down for a penalty. Benayoun stepped up but put his effort off the post, a second consecutive penalty miss for Arsenal without van Persie on the field.

Benayoun made up for his earlier mistake on the eve of the halftime whistle by playing a lovely ball over the top for Marouane Chamakh, who sealed an impressive first half with a calm finish.

A rather uneventful second half saw young French striker Yaya Sanogo also make his senior debut for Arsenal.

EVERTON 0 – 1 ARSENAL

Per Mertesacker stole the points for Arsenal at Goodison Park and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny kept a clean sheet with a terrific performance.

The two sides traded chances early on in the game, but as halftime approached, Everton began to retain the ball on a consistant basis, but failed to make the possession pay.

The second half began as the first ended, but Everton were able to unlock Arsenal’s defences and Louis Saha was able to get the best of Thomas Vermaelen on multiple occasions. Fortunate for Arsenal was the spectacular play of keeper Wojciech Szczesny who turned aside shot after shot.

View attachment 215658

Completly against the run of play, Arsenal turned a freekick in a harmless position into a game winning goal through Per Metesacker’s ariel ability. The German lept above Phil Jagielka and beat Tim Howard with a strong header.

The loss sees Everton drop to last place in the Premier League as Everton have once again started the season slowly.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2 – 5 Arsenal: Robin van Persie Leads the Gunners past Ukrainian Champions in Thrilling Group D Encounter

Arsenal go top of Group D after an impressive attacking performance against Shakhtar Donetsk in a game which saw multiple shifts in momentum. A particularly impressive performance from the away side in the second half saw goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov pick the ball out of the net three times in the final 45 minutes.

Shakhtar were missing Brazilian midfielder Douglas Costa through injury, but he was replaced by Brazilian born and current Croatia international Sammir. Former Arsenal striker Eduardo was also picked in attack with Willian and Jadson to complete a danger front four. Yossi Benayoun was preferred in midfield to Aaron Ramsey, and Bacary Sagna was deployed on the left with Gregory van der Wiel on the right, as Andre Santos has struggled defensively early in the campaign.

Arsenal have made a habit of scoring early in games, and a terrific run by Robin van Persie through the middle of the park combined with Andrey Arshavin making space between the two center backs resulted in the quieting of the home supporters. A calm finish from the little Russian after cutting in from the left got the Gunners off to a flying start.

Less than 20 minutes later, roles were reversed as Arshavin created space for van Persie to move into and a tap in from 6 yards out unmarked, 2-0 to Arsenal.

Shakhtar were playing poorly in front of the home fans, but a stroke of luck and a bit of fantastic technical ability from Willian saw the Ukrainian side back into the game. An inswinging corner from the right of the goal was partially cleared by Song, but Willian took the ball down and volleyed home past a diving Szczesny into the top right corner.

View attachment 216181
Shakhtar's Willian scored an sublime goal to get his team back in the game, and was his sides best player all night

The home side looked a different team after that goal, and the fans had more to cheer about at the half hour mark when Eduardo shielded the ball from Thomas Vermaelen, and then finished well into the bottom corner to erase Arsenal’s two goal advantage. Arsenal and Shakhtar had chances in the first half, and both teams went into the break with the points very much available to be had.

Arsenal started the second half as they began the first and retook the lead when Gervinho, with his back to goal, received a pass 20 yards from goal. The Ivorian turned his defender and slotted the ball into the top corner past Pyatov.

Arsenal began to keep the ball with greater proficiency, and Arsenal’s attacking 3 got the final touches of some impressive build up with van Persie feeding Gervinho for his second and restoring the two goal cushion for Arsenal.

Gunner’s captain Robin van Persie sealed an impressive second half performance for his team with a goal similar to Gervinho’s first, taking a pass with his back to goal, turning and bulging the net for his brace.

View attachment 216182
Robin van Persie celebrates with his teammates after scoring his second of the game and ensuring Arsenal took all the points

Arsenal continued to make chances off the break, but were unable to score again with Shakhtar pushing to get back in the game. Gervinho limped off with 20 minutes to go and early reports speculate he will miss the upcoming fixture against Blackburn.

In the post match interview, new Arsenal manager Andrew was pleased with the 3 points, and the strong attacking play his team showed. “I was hoping to go home with at least a point from Ukraine, but an away win against a strong side is very promising. Van Persie and Gervinho were impressive again today, as were all the lads.”

An overall impressive performance capped by a strong execution in the final frame sees Arsenal take control of their group while getting an all important victory against its strongest competition in Group D.

September 31
Thoughts From the Manager

Strong performances in three competitions this month saw us go undefeated in 6 games, and winners of 5 in a row in all competitions. We started the month slow with a disappointing draw against Wigan, but the remaining fixtures have seen us play quite well, and we are having no trouble finding the back of the net with 16 goals over the past 5 matches.

September Results

English Premier League

We collected 7 out of a possible 9 points, but dropping points to Stoke and not winning by a greater margin against a struggling Everton and Stoke City were slightly disappointing.

It’s still very early in the season, but sitting in 5th thus far is quite pleasing. There are a number of new faces in the squad who are still learning the language, adjusting to the Premier League and adapting to the Arsenal philosophy. Robin van Persie has continued his strong play in the league grabbing another 2 goals, further adding to his league leading tally of 7 for the season.

English Premier League Statistics

Carling Cup

We advance from the Third Round after a good 3-0 victory. The Carling Cup is not one of mine, or the board’s priorities, so the reserves and youth will be getting the majority of playing time. Winning a trophy would be nice though, and I will continue to motivate the players by giving some of the out of favour players a chance to prove their worth.

A matchup with Manchester United awaits us in the Fourth Round, a fixture which will be a difficult one but I have faith in my players to get a good result.

Champions League

Our strongest performances came on European nights in two of our best showings of the year under my management. A 5-0 thumping of Otelul and a sensational 5-2 comeback win over Shakhtar Donesk sees us top the group on 6 points. To go and grab an away win against our strongest competition in the group was impressive, and it has been a great start for us.

The team has been scoring goals for fun, and two players in particular are leading the line. No surprises to see Robin van Persie leading the lines with 4 goals and 2 assists in the group stage, continuing on with his fantastic start to the campaign. It really shows what van Persie can produce when healthy, and thankfully he has been fit through the first two months. New signing Gervinho has also done well to contribute in Europe with 3 goals to his name. Getting secondary scoring is an area in which the team is struggling with in the league, but has yet to be problematic in this competition.

Preview
A mid-month clash with Manchester City will be our big test in October. City have scored 20 goals and conceded just 1 through 5 games and have the chance to go joint top with United when they play their game in hand.

ARSENAL 3 – 1 BLACKBURN

A slow start from Arsenal was pegged back by a Robin van Persie brace after Junior Hoilett gave Blackburn a shock lead after 34 minutes. Blackburn fall into the relegation zone with the loss and calls for manager Steve Kean’s head have already been voiced by the supporters.

View attachment 217187
With the loss, Blackburn fall into the bottom 3 and Steve Kean is taking most of the blame from the supporters

Steven N’Zonzi got the start in midfield with Alex Song suspended, and Theo Walcott occupied the right hand side of the pitch in place of the injured Gervinho.

Blackburn got off to a strong start, even with Arsenal keeping more than 60 percent of the ball, the away side got on the board first when Junior Hoilett tapped in from 6 yards out from a lovely cross from Morten Gamst Pederson.

Arsenal looked a different team after the goal and began to create chances, but some poor finishing from Walcott in particular meant Arsenal went into the break down a goal.

Rovers were forced to defend heavily after the interval, and Martin Olsson conceded a penalty by bringing Arshavin down inside the 18 yard box. Robin van Persie stepped up and leveled the game by smashing the ball down the middle and Arsenal were deservedly level.

Blackburn were made to pay on the hour mark when the back line showed a lack of communication and didn’t push up quick enough allowing Yossi Benayoun to pick out van Persie for his second.

Substitute Marouane Chamakh came on for van Persie and made an immediate impact by nodding home from a corner to cap a strong second half display and put Arsenal up 3-1.

ARSENAL 0 – 2 MANCHESTER CITY

League leaders Manchester City traveled to the Emirates and played Arsenal off the pitch with two late first half goals.

A very defensive formation from Arsenal saw Steven N’Zonzi start in midfield and Johan Djourou sit just in front of the back four as Alex Song missed out serving his final game of a three match ban. Roberto Mancini went with his usual 4-2-3-1 formation with Nasri, Aguero and David Silva behind Edin Dzeko who has started the season with just one goal to his name.

Relentless pressure came from the away side as Arsenal were sitting very deep and were unsuccessful on counter attacking attempts. Arsenal finally buckled on the 42 minute mark when Vincent Kompany got to the ball first off a corner and scored his first goal of the season.

In first half injury time, Samir Nasri came back to haunt his former club by scoring a curling effort from 25 yards out past a diving Szczesny. The goal capped a disappointing first half performance from the Gunners and the stadium was silent as half time arrived.

Things went from bad to worse just minutes into the second half when captain Robin van Persie pulled up and needed to come off. Early reports have the skipper listed as “questionable” for the midweek Champions League clash with Kobenhavn.

Arsenal continued to struggle without their star forward and were fortunate to not concede again when Sergio Aguero was sent in alone but saw his effort glance just wide.

Another loss for Arsenal against title opposition, the first against Chelsea in Matchweek 2, sees Arsenal fall further off the pace so early in the season.

FC KOBENHAVN 0 – 3 ARSENAL

Arsenal leave it late, but take all the points thanks to a Marouane Chamakh double and a goal from Abou Diaby on his return. All was not well for Arsenal as Robin van Persie was forced off by a rough tackle from Peter Larsson, who was sent off for the illegal challenge. Manager Andrew revealed after the game that the striker will miss 2 – 3 weeks with an ankle injury.

View attachment 217194
Robin van Persie picked up an anlke injury and will miss the next couple of weeks

Scott Sinclair was given the start on the left side and looked lively for the first half hour, but failed to connect with van Persie.

A horror challenge from Kobenhavn defender Peter Larsson resulted in a straight red card, and forced Chamakh on to replace the injured in form striker Robin van Persie.

Arsenal were creating chances, but were unable to make a breakthrough until the 76th minute when Gregory van der Wiel picked out Marouane Chamakh. A low cross from the right and lovely first touch combined with a quick finish put Arsenal up by a single goal.

Manager Andrew and the away supporters were able to relax when Andre Santos picked out Chamakh just two minutes later. The Moroccan made no mistake with a strong header to the far post past a frozen keeper.
Abou Diaby came on as a substitute with 15 minutes remaining and capped his return from a long spell on the injury block with a fantastic volley from just inside the area.

FC Kobenhavn defended well for the majority of the game, but being down to 10 men finally caught up with the Danish club in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Aston Villa began to exploit the flanks in the second half, and James Collins nodded home after the Villa had won 3 consecutive corners in a span of 2 minutes.

Andrey Arshavin picked up a sprained ankle after a collision with Alan Hutton, and will be forced to sit out for at least a month.

Gabby Agbonlahor shocked Arsenal’s tired legs by beating the offside trap to give Villa the lead and secure 3 points for the home side.

Arsenal continue to struggle away from home, and are desperate for someone to score not named Robin van Persie.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 – 1 ARSENAL

Substitute Javier Hernandez played just over 35 minutes but was the difference maker in a game filled with each team’s reserve players.

United carried the play in the first half but Mame Biram Diouf was unable to convert on his teams two best chances as Lukasz Fabianski bailed out some poor defending from Sebastien Squillaci in particular.

With 55 minutes gone, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to bring on Javier Hernandez to provide a spark, and 5 minutes later the young Mexican got behind Arsenal's defence and calmly finished past the Arsenal keeper.

View attachment 217613
Javier Hernandez made a mockery of Squillaci and Miquel scoring two goals off the bench

Anderson picked out the sub making a quick run at Squillaci and the defender had no answer the the quickness Hernandez showed, and a calm rounding of Fabianski gave Manchester United a 2-0 lead in a game they looked fully in control of.

Arsenal boss Andrew made a substitution of his own to try to make a comeback, as Theo Walcott was introduced with 20 minutes remaining. The right winger made a quick impact carving out a handful of chances, but was unable to convert.

Walcott did earn a penalty late in the game, with Yossi Benayoun converting, but it was merely a consolation goal as United held on.

Arsenal see its run in the Carling Cup come to an end and another opportunity at silverware disappears.

SUNDERLAND 3 – 1 ARSENAL

Arsenal lose their fourth match in the past five games in all competitions after falling to Sunderland, poor defending again the culprit for the Gunners.

Robin van Persie was still unfit meaning Marouane Chamakh started up front supported by Scott Sinclair and Gervinho.

Sunderland got the first goal of the game off a low cross which Bacary Sagna completely misjudged allowing Kieren Richardson a simple finish at the back post.

Richardson again got the better of Sagna as the second half began, and a lovely pass to Ji Dong Won who beat Thomas Vermaelen to the ball made it 2-0 for the home side.

View attachment 217626

Arsenal were getting their chances, but poor finishing from the front men and a remarkable save from Craig Gordon kept the two goal lead intact.

Theo Walcott came off the bench for a second consecutive game and looked like he had a point to prove. Sent in on goal by Chamakh, Walcott took two attempts to beat the Sunderland keeper but buried his rebound to get his side back into the game.

With 10 minutes remaining and Arsenal pressing for the equalizer, Ahmed Elmohamady scored from what replays later showed was an offside position, but the goal stood and sealed Arsenal`s fate.

Arsenal finish the month on a slump and a 3 match losing streak. Manager Andrew will need to turn this poor run around soon or his reign at Arsenal may end quickly.

Thoughts From the Manager

All I can say is that October has been cruel to us. Losing 4 out of 6 games in the month is inexcusable for a team like Arsenal, and we must turn these results around immediately before we fall too far behind our rivals. Our main problem was keeping the ball out of our net, managing just a single clean sheet over the six game stretch.

October Results

English Premier League

One win from four Premier League games was very disappointing. I can understand struggling against the likes of Manchester City, but I was hoping for a better performance in front of our home supporters in this game. Our away form is less than stellar, and we showed this in losses to Aston Villa and Sunderland. If we want to compete for the title (or even a top 4 spot), we need to fix this problem as soon as possible.

It’s still early in the season, but our poor run this month has seen us slip into 7th in the league standings. Robin van Persie missed some games this month, but still leads the goal scoring charts for the Premier League with 9 goals to his name.

Champions League

The one positive of the month and the season as a whole thus far is our performances in the Champions League. A big 3-0 victory over FC Kobenhavn has seen us pick up 9 out of a possible 9 points thus far, and the team is having few problems putting the ball in the back of the net.
Carling Cup

A tough result to swallow against rivals Manchester United. I am really growing to dislike Sir Alex Ferguson, as his comments post game regarding our squad being “sub-par” were uncalled for. The game was basically a battle of each team’s reserve squads, so it means little to myself and t he board that we are out of the Carling Cup.
Preview

A fairly straightforward upcoming month. We need to get back on track and the fixture list has been fairly kind to us.

ARSENAL 5 – 0 FC KOBENHAVN

A strong performance after a poor run of form from the Gunners, grabbing a 5-0 victory to confirm qualification for the Round of 16.

Two early goals from Theo Walcott and Marouane Chamakh inside of 30 minutes gave Arsenal a quick start, but worries crept in when Alex Song was sent off for a tackle from behind in the 37th minute.

View attachment 219137
Marouane Chamakh was Arsenal's key figure in their Champions League encounter with FC Kobenhavn

Just 1 minute later, Walcott got his second goal of the game from a slick pass by Chamakh. The target man then scored his second of the game as Kobenhavn’s defence looked all out of sorts and out of position to give Arsenal a commanding 4-0 lead going into halftime.

10 minutes into the second half, Chamakh completed his hattrick after being giving three opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net after Kobenhavn struggled to clear the ball.

Even against weaker opposition, Arsenal appear to be out of their slump and need to bring this play into the Premier League. With the victory, Arsenal secure qualification but will look to top Group D.

Two own goals see Arsenal take the 3 points in a dominant display against Queens Park Rangers.

Mikel Arteta’s corner in the 16th minute was knocked into his own net by Shawn Wright-Phillips after relentless pressure from the home side.

The Spaniard was again involved in Arsenal’s build up, this time on the end of some slick passing. Aaron Ramsey collected the ball in midfield and quickly played Mikel Arteta, who fired a worm burner from 25 yards out.
Minutes later, an Arsenal player saw red for a second consecutive game, this time Marouane Chamakh was sent off early for a silly foul on Bassong.

QPR were better in the second half, but another own goal, this time off Sebastien Bassong, ended the game with 20 minutes to go.

A dominating performance from the Gunners even when playing with a man down for the final hour. QPR were unfortunate to concede two own goals, but were only still in the game in part to Paddy Kenny’s strong play.
