Jamie Carragher - A Managers Story

A tough draw for us today. PSG are obviously the favourites in the group. I'd imagine it would be between ourselves and Porto who is fighting for second but I am under no illusion of how the games in Greece can be played. I played against Olympiakos as a player in the group stage. We lost one and won one, but the game in Greece was tough. My European record has been really good since becoming a manger so I'm hoping that will keep up.

You would have thought that I'd managed more games than this. It's been a roller coaster of a career but one I am extremely proud of. I've finally got the challenge I've wanted and I have trophies behind my belt. I'm looking forward to taking Sunderland forward now. I'm going to build the team into one of the biggest in the world, and I've just made my last signing of the window, it's a big one.

Patrick Jaime

Patrick was my parting gift at Liverpool. I'd signed him from River Plate after the scouts had come back with some brilliant reviews and they had a lot to say about the lad. At the time we only had 3 commanding centre halfs and when I have the funds I always wan't 4. With him being 18 at the time I knew he wouldn't be a starter every game but also knew he would improve. However I did think he would have got more game time than he has.

Patrick managed 68 appearences for Liverpool but only 32 of them were starting. He wasn't transfer listed and he hadn't requested to leave but I knew that he deserved more playing time than that and did not want Mourinho freezing him out. We had a £31 million bid accepted which is very high for a centre half but at 21 I think he will be well worth the money.

I was in Karaiskaki stadium that day my friend ! We absolutely gone wild when we won the game !!! Too bad for us Gerrard punished as in the second game and we did not advanced to the knock out stage. But Liverpool was to hard to beat and the team proved it by winning the ECl in the end.

This is such a powerhouse of a story and a fine journey.
What a great signing he looks.

Today was one of those days for us. We played amazingly well and controlled it, but the goals were lacking for the chances we had. It was nice to see Dybala get a goal after a lovely ball from Walker, but after that we didn't really have much to shout about. We had many shots but they were not impressive. Memphis Depay played abysmal and it's starting to worry me as he hasn't had a good game since he's joined.

The second leg really was some game wasnt it! Rivaldo's free kick really knocked us out but we somehow managed to pull through. We had such a good fighting spirit that year and like you said we proved tht when we won it. Can never get over the Milan game!

Thanks mate, I'm hoping that I can keep it going until the new FM! Yeah he has bags of quality, funny how his corners and crossing are so high for a centre back. Man of the match in his first game so it's a good start!

August Review

View attachment 240383

We started the month by losing the Super Cup final, but I wasn't too down about that as we were playing Real Madrid. We knew we had a difficult trip to Old Trafford but I didn't think United would beat us so badly. At this point I was quite worried about the season. 2 wins without conceding in our last 2 games of the month has picked things up.

We find ourselves in 9th position after 3 games. Which is always nice to see as Sunderland have not been in the top half of the league in a long time. After 3 games there are only 5 teams who haven't lost which shows how tough this league is. We're looking to climb up the table in September and then we start to have more of an idea how the season will shape up.

It's a busy month for us. I'm looking to get 6 points in the league at least. I'd also like to be in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup and see us with 3 points in the group stage of the Champions League. We're getting the hardest one out of the way first with PSG away.

Pro of the month
Patrick Jaime's quality debut

Con of the month
Memphis Depay's awful form

Watched that second game with my father. We almost bursted to tears when Gerrard scored that goal. During half time we said that there is no way we could loose 3-1 and knocked out... Our coach lost that game tonight with his subs ...

Another win and another clean sheet today. We've now shot up to fourth place in the league. We'd gone one nil down only to find that Poyet's goal was offside, and that was the kick up the **** we needed to win the game. Patrick Roberts scored a stunning volley to put us 1-0 up. We got 2 in 4 minutes in the second half as Loftus-Cheek scored a dipping header and Roberts got his second with a lovely strike. I took Dybala off for Markovic around the 60 minute mark as we have PSG in the next few days and he bagged his first goal for us with a tap in. The squad are really beginning to gel now.

Stefan Markovic

Here is a screenshot of Stefan Markovic. I signed the Serb on a bosman deal after he failed to break into the Bayern squad. He'd played for Bayerns second team for the last 6 years. He does not possess the abilities I usually ask for from a striker, but he's a very good plan B and is an amazing finisher.

I'd finished for the day and had a meeting arranged with Ellis Short about the club. I was expecting a chat about the takeover too, I wanted to know who the people where buying the club.

After talking through the usual discussions Ellis had told me that he is 50/50 on selling the club or not. This was not a normal conversation managers would have with their chairman, but he trusted and respected me enough to tell me.

He then decided it was the right time to offer me a new deal. I'd only been back 7 months.

"What do you think then?"

"I can't right now. I need to know where the club is going. I have 2 years left on my deal anyway and if you're not going to be here I need to know who is and I need to talk about my visions with them."

He understood, but I'm quite confused to why he had offered me that contract. It was a much better deal than the one I'm on now but money means nothing to me. I've had a long playing career and continued to earn since the sport. I manage generally out of my own interests in football now.

I'm very happy at the club, but I left the office with a feeling in the back of my head. I just hope he stays and this can be put to bed.

Our first game in the group would be our hardest. We knew that. PSG away was always going to be tough but I set the team out to just play football and go at them.

We did too. We played some amazing football. We managed 21 shots and we won the game in possession too. Goals win you games though, and we certainly didn't have them today.

We ended up losing 4-1. I was extremely disappointed. I'd watched another atrocious display from Depay. I took him off at half time. It's just not working with us at the moment and I might have to sit down with him. Dybala has not been finishing his chances either. James Wilson would have been perfect today. A late Olympiakos goal means we are bottom of the group but only a point behind the other two teams.

I understand completely why he would want more wages. There are a lot more players earning higher wages than him who do not have the impact he does. Luckily he wants to stay as long as I up them. We discussed a contract and his agent feels he is worth £120,000 a week. He is, negotiations are looking good right now and hopefully he signs.

Football is a beautiful sport. Day's like today remind me of that. Saturday September 18th, the weather is lovely. The grass is cut to perfection and the atmosphere is rocking inside the Stadium Of Light.

Chelsea at home in the league.

15 minutes into the game we found ourselves 2-1 down. Moreno opened up the scoring against his old club and then Barardi and Jovic scored two good goals. A great start if you're a neutral.

20 minutes in we equalised. Depay with his first goal ever for the club, he was upfront today and he looked much better than usual. Sadly for us we went behind again a minute later, Berardi again.

There are now crazy scenes as Depay get's his second and equalises just a minute after going behind. 3 goals in 3 minutes.

Jovic bags another and we go into half time 4-3 down. A brilliant half of football, just not if you're a manager.

The second half starts and it's not good news for us. Embolo scores Chelsea's 5th goal in the 59th minute.

Of course the fans can't wait more than two minutes for another goal as Depay completes his hat-trick in the 61st minute, he look a different player playing upfront. I'd now brought Dybala on and moved him onto the wing though.

Fan favourite Patrick Roberts equalised after another two minutes. 63 minutes in and it was Sunderland 5-5 Chelsea.

It had been 15 minutes without a goal. The ball fell to Roberts and he blasted it home. We finally took the lead again. The craze of scoring another goal after two mintes carried on. Dybala just made it 7-5 against Chelsea. I could not believe what I was watching.

Roberts finished his own hat-trick with the last kick of the game. 13 goals. 8 for us. 5 for them. Football, don't you just love it?

So I'm loaning Markovic to Fulham. Well, not exactly. As you all know I hate Fulham so I've accepted the offer as it's an emergency loan really. Their strikers are injured and they only want Marko for the month. I'm going to stop the loan from going ahead once I have a chance. Leaving them without a striker for just one more game. I'm evil.
