Swedish Cup - Final - IFK Göteborg (Neutral)

Swedish Cup Final against IFK Göteborg. They’ve had a great start to the season so hopefully we’re in for a good match today.

In just the 3rd minute Ricardinho brought former player Simon Kroon down in the box, and Gustav Engvall placed his penalty perfectly in the bottom corner. Not a good start!

An IFK goal kick just two minutes later went straight through everyone and found Kroon in space, but he fired wide with only Mohlin to beat.

In the 7th minute we had a throw in, and Ricardinho got the ball and put in a cross which Anton Tinnerholm, of all people, met with a lovely header past the keeper and tie the game! This is his first ever Malmö goal - in season 3! Having flashbacks of last season’s final against IFK - we were behind until Enock Adu scored his first goal for me!

The game settled from there, and we went into half time all square.

In the 58th minute Kroon wasted another chance for IFK, firing straight into the arms of Mohlin after good work from Söderqvist.

In the 74th minute Helander, Gustafson and Molins all came off. Romagnoli, Kardum and Petkovic were their respective replacements.

The match continued to be uneventful, though we were definitely in control.

Full time came and the match was still tied, so we moved into extra time.

41 seconds into extra time Eriksson put us ahead! Delahaye was tackled in the box after being found by Kardum’s cross, but the loose ball went straight to Eriksson, who made no mistake from 6 yards.

In the added minute of the first half IFK worked the ball up field beautifully, and Engvall was found behind the defence, but he missed the target somehow.

We worked the ball around the box very well in the 107th minute, and eventually Delahaye slotted the ball to Kardum through an opening, and the young attacking midfielder beat the keeper at his near post with an exquisite strike to give us a 2 goal lead!

We saw out the win from there.

It took us a while but eventually we showed our class and toppled IFK in the final for the second straight year. Ricardinho recovered from his early error to post a match rating of 8.7, and Tinnerholm was excellent on the opposite flank, scoring the all important equaliser and achieving a rating of 8.6. The POM was young Dorian Delahaye though, who picked up 2 assists and a rating of 8.8! The youngster now has 5 assists in as many appearances for us, but no goals. Retrain as an attacking midfielder or winger maybe? :P

POM: Dorian Delahaye (8.8, 0G, 2A)

Swedish Premier Division - Game 8 - Elfsborg (Away)

Big match against second-placed Elfsborg. This is just three days after the Cup Final, and in the next six days we will play last years runners up Djurgården as well as IFK Göteborg again. A win for Elfsborg would see them overtake us at the top of the table. Would certainly make things more interesting!

It didn’t take us long to get going though. Quintero was fouled within 15 seconds, and jumped back up to play the free kick short to Gustafson, who passed to KBH, who passed to Jovic, who scored! But he was offside - contentious, in my opinion.

Jovic turned on the edge of the area and shot in the 27th minute, but a diving save from the keeper tipped it around the post.

Jovic scored a legal goal in the 33rd minute, racing ahead of his defender to get on the end of Linnes’ low cross and convert it from close range.

And he had his second 5 minutes later when Quintero’s through ball found KBH, who was tackled, and the loose ball was struck home by the Serbian.

A brilliant run from KBH along the baseline in the 52nd minute was followed by a great strike at the near post, but the keeper stuck his leg out and knocked it behind.

In the 55th minute Quintero went down with an injury and had to be replaced by Kardum.

In the 67th minute Petkovic replaced Gustafson.

Biro-Biro for Crisetig was my 80th minute change.

In the 82nd an unbelievable jinking run from KBH ended with a shot which the keeper just got enough glove on for it to trickle agonisingly wide, but not over the back line, before it was cleared.

In the 90th the icing was applied to the cake when Jovic laid the ball off to Petkovic who launched an effort towards the top left corner. It was very well saved, but KBH was there for an easy tap in.

Remarkably comfortable win at the home ground of the title contenders (loose definition ;)). They had just two shots all game whilst we had 60% of the ball and 21 shots. Great performance.

POM: Luka Jovic (9.0, 2G, 0A)

Some very very dramatic results around Europe the last couple of days! Schalke and Bayern were tied going into the last match of the season, and Schalke only managed a draw with Mainz. But thanks to arch rivals Dortmund, who beat Bayern 1-0 to finish 3rd, just a single point behind Schalke and behind Bayern on goal difference, Schalke were crowned champions of Germany!

And in the English Premier Division things were looking glum for Southampton who sat 19th and had to travel to second placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge needing a result to survive. They pulled an amazing win out of nowhere, and finished 17th! At the other end of the table Arsenal had already wrapped up the league the week before, Man U leapfrogged Chelsea into second place, whilst Liverpool picked up the final CL slot.

KSG wants to join Liverpool! Can’t blame him tbh, but it didn’t stop me talking him out of it.

Swedish Premier Division - Game 9 - Djurgården (Away)

Djurgården are up next, and the rotated side takes the field, with an eye on IFK Göteborg in three days time. Hopefully it’s enough to get the win. Djurgården have been up and down this season, and have already lost twice as many league matches as they did last season, though they won their last match 4-1 so may be finding some form. Neri and Delahaye only miss out due to international duty.

In the first 25 seconds Djurgården’s left winger, former player Lepiller, got into the box and inside of Biro-Biro and Tinnerholm, but was denied by KSG, who touched his shot onto the post from only just outside the 6 yard box. Huge let off.

We didn’t wake up though, and in the 14th minute a cross found Lepiller just a few centimetres out, and his header crashed off the underside of the bar and in - fortunately, he was offside.

In the 18th minute Molins played Forsberg in, but he somehow contrived to shoot over the bar from an excellent position.

In the 44th minute Djurgården had a free kick centimetres outside the box. Lepiller smashed it into the bar.

We were going to need to play much better in the second half.

In the 52nd minute Kardum played the ball forward to Eriksson, who had the time and space to chip a pass through to Petkovic, who looked up and fired past the keeper to put us in the lead.

KBH and Díaz replaced Petkovic and Forsberg in the 63rd minute, Kardum swapping with Díaz.

In the 66th a huge long ball over the top found their right winger in space, and he cut inside and hammered a shot which KSG got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.

In the 71st minute Lepiller swung in a free kick which was headed into the bottom right corner by a Djurgården player, standing unmarked at the penalty spot, and suddenly we were behind!

Jovic came on for Eriksson in the 73rd.

And in the 92nd minute the move paid dividends! Tinnerholm overlapped Molins down the right and sent in a low cross, which Jovic sprinted onto and knocked past the keeper to draw us level!

The late equaliser didn’t change the fact that we’d been poor all game, and didn’t really deserve anything from it. We still had the better shots and possession, but were not at our usual standard, and Djurgården created better chances. The first team will have to do better against IFK in a couple of days time.

POM: Alexander Faltsetas (Djurgården - 8.4, 0G, 1A)

Best Malmö Player: Anton Tinnerholm (8.0, 0G, 1A)

Allsvenskan - Game 11 - IFK Göteborg (Home)

IFK Göteborg are our opponents today, and they are just two points behind us in the table. I’ve downloaded some file which fixes the competition and club names, such as Schalke, and it has changed the competition name from “Swedish Premier Division” to “Allsvenskan”, the real name, so I will refer to it as that from now on. Anyway, this is a very important fixture!

In the 3rd minute Quintero tried to play Jovic through, but the ball was blocked by a defender and sat loose in the box. Quintero charged in and had a shot, which was saved, but he tucked home the rebound to give us an early lead!

Quintero’s 12th minute corner found Romagnoli at the near post, and his header went to Milosevic at the back post, whose goal bound effort was diverted behind.

In the 16th minute Quintero did incredibly well to keep a Bengtsson cross in play, before chipping one of his own back into the 6 yard box, where Jovic met it with a fine header to double our lead.

Jovic almost had a second following a throw in in the 23rd minute, but the keeper turned it around the post.

In the 26th minute KBH dribbled into the box and squared for Jovic, whose effort was saved, and Gustafson’s attempt from the top of the box off the rebound was straight into the keeper’s hands.

I replaced the tiring Quintero in the 61st minute with Kardum.

A lovely raking pass from Gustafson in the 68th minute found KBH, and the Korean cut beautifully inside two players before curling an effort just beyond the top left corner.

Díaz and Helander came on for Crisetig and Milosevic in the 73rd minute.

Santos has been relatively quiet in recent matches, but in the 89th minute he cut in from the right, carried the ball along the top of the box and unleashed an insanely powerful strike, which unfortunately cannoned back of the crossbar.

In the 90th minute a lovely backheel from Zohore found the run of Söderqvist, who beat KSG from just inside the area.

But KBH scored a goal late in injury time to seal the match - Bengtsson’s throw to Kardum was crossed to him, and he sped past his man before converting from close range with ease.

A good win in the end - the standouts were Quintero (8.8) with a goal and assist, and KBH who scored late on and generally looked lively. We move 5 points clear at the summit, though Elfsborg could close the gap to 3 if they win their game in hand.

Allsvenskan - Game 12 - Kalmar FF (Away)

Kalmar FF are our last opponents before the International break, and we should be winning here.

Santos embarked on a brilliant run in the 5th minute but his eventual effort was held fairly easily.

In the 12th minute we were passing the ball around inside the box following an insane baseline run by Santos, before someone eventually had a shot and scored. Díaz it was, who picked up his first goal for the club. Jovic had the assist.

In the 32nd minute Tinnerholm’s cross found Molins in the box, who unselfishly squared for Kardum, but the youngster’s shot went straight into the back of Jovic, who couldn’t get out of the way fast enough.

Tinnerholm’s 48th minute cross should have been converted by Santos, but the Brazilian shot straight into the arms of the keeper from 6 yards.

Molins got himself on the board in the 53rd minute, belting the life out of the loose ball that resulted from Kardum’s shot being blocked.

Delahaye replaced Jovic in the 65th minute.

Neri replaced Crisetig in the 67th.

A brilliant counterattack from a corner in the 71st minute went to waste as Neri passed to Santos who was well offside rather than Kardum or Molins in much better positions.

Eriksson replaced Santos and moved up top in the 84th.

He should have scored two minutes later, having been found by Neri’s cut back, but his effort was straight at the keeper, who deflected it behind.

In the 90th minute a great through ball from Díaz found the run of Delahaye, who met it with a brilliant finish across the keeper into the top right corner, but he had been marginally offside.

Delahaye then picked up a knock a minute later, so I played a man short for the rest of injury time.

Molins, Kardum and Romagnoli were the most impressive today. This is our last competitive fixture for about two months, so I have arranged a number of friendlies, most of which will be left to my assistant manager I think.
