Road to Glory : The Manager

100 Games in Crewe

Some things just aren't supposed to go your way in football, that is just a fact of the game - I learned it the hard way on numerous occasions. From telling every odd Joe, Stuart, Alex or Ross that he wasn't good enough to progress at Aberdeen or having a witch doctor curse me in South Africa - but sometimes it is all a bit more simple than that and you just get absolutely, royally f*cked in your 100th game at the club. We traveled to Carrow Road and of course, they are desperate for promotion and spend a massive £35,000,000 more than us on players' wages. It doesn't help when Mr George Ray gives away his third penalty in three leagues games and grabs himself a red within the first minute - when you are already 1-0 down. May I repeat - HIS THIRD ****** PENALTY HE HAS GIVEN AWAY IN THREE LEAGUE GAMES, I mean it apparently wasn't a red and apparently looked like a dive on the telly but still this was his first red of the season, but that accumulates to 6 in a year. He's got to go, now. I tried to hold on to him but he can be someone elses burden now - if they want it. Absolute joke. Anyway, the game went on and we lost 5-0. I also told Tony Watt who was whinging over getting a new contract but not playing that he had to go prove a point - he was criticised by the fans, media and the lot for his post-season antics and then getting a Scotland call-up. But he had the worst game of his career.

"Alright?" A tired, weary sounded voice responded on the other side of the phone - I forget that most will probably be asleep at half 1 in the morning on a Tuesday - well, Wednesday.

"Sorry for calling, I haven't been able to talk to your agent at all today despite my best efforts and as you'll know we failed to find you a new club anyway. Not a real surprise when you lack experience in the league and apparently the pace is too much for you since you have given away - how many penalties?" I spoke down the phone, I had won a personal battle with an upset player in a sense - but at the same time it was a lose/lose. No income for selling and now we had no relationship to work on.

"You'll be training with the Under 21's until you come around, perform there and don't give away a penalty and you can work your way back into the first team squad. Deal"? I added, I envied him lying in a bed - I was sat in my office with a janitor staring blankly back at me wanting to go home too. I had no business to conduct so really sat there - offered out emails and spoke to Jeff the Janitor while watching Sky Sports' deadline day coverage. No Jim White though, first year without him after retirement so it was a little different, nevermind the fact I got a new friend out of it. He has a kid who lives and breathes Manchester United apparently, despite his Dad getting free tickets to our games. Good seats too. Which is a shame really, he doesn't even see the United games - just sits at home playing FIFA and watching the Manchester United game on Match of the Day the following day.

"George.. ?" I asked, there was no real response from him after my U21 comments. He had hung up. Absolutely perfect, isn't he?

Currently favourite for the job so this was quite amusing, no intentions of leaving though - good for Irish football if this guy gets it though! They narrowly missed out on the Europa League group stages after losing 3-2 to Lille in the play off.

It has to be said, I didn't expect us to sit on the wrong side of so many results in the Championship but that just seems to be the case, it is a shame and we need to get our heads together and play - the George Ray situation hasn't helped, Raul De Tomas failing to find the net and so many injuries have hurt us.

After the thrashing at Norwich, we had Wolves away. They were struggling too, were without a few key players and it was a great opportunity to find the net. Watt got the nod but guess what? We failed to find the net.

and lost late on. Poor performances all-round. Hateley, after losing out on a spot in the middle of the park, has clung on the right back spot and has been relatively decent. Raul De Tomas and Tony Watt need to learn to score - funny as they score over 60 combined in third tiers only last season - one here the other in Spain.

Derby County next. At home. They are after promotion so we would really have our work cut-out. Raul De Tomas came in for his start, technically better than Watt and we'd need that. Fosu managed to pick up an injury early but half went on and was a real bore. It was a second half collapse and Hernanes screamer that decided the winner.

While the game was close, we were poor in the final 45. Hernanes found himself in space and scored an absolute delight from over 25 yards, from there we had two awful mistakes from Shane Griffin that gifted Chris Wood two goals. No goal again - from anyone.

We'd take a breather from the league maulings and look at facing Brentford in the Capital One Cup, it was away and we had been awful so it was hardly going to be breather to be fair. Chance to score though - but nah. The game was dire and we were immediately behind after Njoku header after a corner. We were under a lot of pressure early on but this goal got us going but we failed to find the net before half time. Poor defensive work from the midfield created space all over, this dragged our defence higher up and Khallid had space behind us.

Poor. No goal in 4 games. Time to change things.

Been absolute dog, Raul De Tomas hasn't lit up the league like I hoped his Spanishness would. Bicho had been decent but injuries have got in the way. Once all injuries are over with I am confident we can get back to ourselves. Until then, some direct counter attacking football might be needed.

Shamrock Rovers just breed talented managers for English clubs! The hoops' was the mans first managerial job after some coaching.

Tough start n the Championship mate.

Missed you loaning Bicho, where are you playing him? Has been immense on the wing for me!

"Come on boss, what the f*ck?" Watt demanded as he avoided welcoming Raul De Tomas onto the field. He had grabbed his second and was playing out his skin, however he refused to celebrate his penalty and when he made it 3-1 with a tidy finish he just stared towards the bench, and myself - just creating drama.

"What?" I laughed. "You need a rest." before I went towards the touchline again, to throw out a few words of encouragement. We had to see the game out. Ten to go and we were 3-1 up against promotion chasing Watford at their home.

Tony stood staring at me before Mahoy ushered him back towards the bench. He had again asked for a move, this time to Hull - I couldn't tell if he was serious or a joke at the fact I was linked there. He was trying to play games and I am happy he scored 2 but the game was settled. He wasn't getting a third.

Defensive Disaster

The win at Watford COULD have turned things around but we have forgotten how to defend apparently, up first was Fulham. They came up with us but have added well and look pretty strong - Conor McAleney has been unbelievable for them too.

Tony Watt would start again, after a strong performance against Watford. Hateley would remain at right back and everything was generally the same.

Barring the result.

Joronen was good in the sticks but didn't have enough to stop McAleny's form, more injuries too. Nothing serious though as both Brown and Forde could return to the side as soon as. Average and poor. The game was even but McAleny's early strike in the second half meant we couldn't get going after our strong first 45 and despite calls for offside McAleny grabbed another.

It's annoying we lose out in these close ties so often as we are a good side, just lost that little bit of magic and goal scoring prowess despite efforts.

Up next was Bradford, again they were looking good. Raul De Tomas asked me if he could find himself in the starting line-up as he can't scare if he can't play and I opted to give him a shot. He was cool about it, while Watt was just awkward.

Incredibly close encounter again as 18,000 showed up to the Valley Parade to see us manage to lose out again. A few small changes saw Lawrence come in, Raul De Tomas and Shane Griffin but we couldn't see ourselves through to the other side after a late goal saw us lose - again. Raul was decent to be fair to him, created chances and was working well just failing to score. Soon, I see it coming.

Leicester would be next, they were absolutely flying having only lost one so it wasn't going to be the easiest of games. However, if we could concentrate and play our game then we could for sure pull it out the bag - who am I kidding? Leicester would be too strong - or not. We ended up playing decent, we took our chances but a late Leicester surge almost saw us drop the points.

Raul De Tomas played, was incredibly quiet but he was asked to go wide to allow Tony Watt to also play, who was involved. While Forde continued to be unbelievable with a well-placed free kick ending it the back of the net, it was a well-worked move down his right side that also ended up finding Carles Gil at the back post. More injuries, nothing serious. Huge win. Turning point, surely!?

We wouldn't get a real chance to find out though as we had Cardiff next, at home nonetheless, but they had superstars in their side - well, Gary Cahill and Andros Townsend. As well as hot youngster Saider who was incredibly nifty.

Defensive disaster. Bennett was at a complete loss at looking after Nyondo while Declan John was walking circles around Tootle at left back. We were given a shout though, as RAUL DE TOMAS?! found us a goal back, he picked up from about 30 yards - sprayed the ball wide and a dart into the box and across the front post found the ball back on his head and passed David Marshal. Wasn't to be enough though as Nyondo once again made Bennett look stupid with good movement and a tidy finish late on.

Moving on, we had 24th placed MK Dons. Here is where points were important as it looked like a relegation battle was upon us until we started to fix our ****.

Kavanagh returned while Bennett was given another shot to prove himself at centre back. Raul De Tomas would start while Ryan Kent also got himself his first start for us - but what does it matter when David Faupaula is actually Messi?

Sure, he only scored one but he won a penalty with his footwork and he was constantly causing us issues. We only got 5 shots away and were way too complacent. Raul De Tomas failed to score, while Rossiter was incredible in the middle of the park and some decent work at the back allowed us to keep the score low.

Looking like a bit of trouble, but still confident of a nice mid table finish once we get going. Still feels like we haven't clicked but it will come. Hopefully, and a decent run will see us climb and climb!

No real talents but Forde has been great.
