Road to Glory : The Manager

great work getting the new job at NUFC... you definitely need better defenders and midfielders, and maybe another striker, and probably a young GK too!

and where is Monday (Monde)?

any chance/plans getting him to England?

could you take a look at Scuffet and Cleiton for GK?
Samir for CD, Para for LB, Lucas/Gaston Gil Romero for DM/CM?

all the best man... BTW, how have NUFC fared in the previous few years on your save?

Yeah some work is needed, can look at your suggestions - no guarantees though!

Not heard from Monde in a little while but that may get covered as well as the last few Prem years when I hop back on tomorrow!

Thanks for reading. :D

Congrats on the NUFC job, Made my day seeing you have came in as the saviour!! The team has changed drastically with only 6 players I noted still there from the start! Cabella can be brilliant! Pleased you gave Carver 'The best coach in the PL' the boot too! The bloke caused me so much footballing distress this season!

Life Before James McKenzie..

Life before James McKenzie took over at Newcastle United wasn't all butterflies and rainbows, Newcastle was a shadow of its former self. The real problem started a long while ago before the huge relegation to the Championship. The club did bounce back but no manager has managed to return the Tyneside club back to their previous perch.

Mike Ashley had done a dictatorship at the club, his takeover in 2007 was met with mixed emotions but before long the majority wanted rid of the man, throughout his reign there was protests, potential buyers, many managers and an awful saga with Glasgow Rangers Football Club. Come the 2014/2015 season, no Alan Pardew replacement was found as assistant manager John Carver was given the reigns until Martin Jol was found, John Carver did have Newcastle United consolidating in 14th before Jol took over. The side was looking bleak with a number of injuries across the back line, Jol added a Winston Reid and attacking players Frank Betra and Caner Edkin to his side in January (2/3 remain) and ultimately managed a tenth place finish.

It was thought that Martin Jol would manage to give Newcastle United a European push in his first full season at the club but the sale of Ayoze Perez to felling top 5 contenders Tottenham for £16,000,000 was met with huge fan anger and a lot of criticism from the press. Davide Santon left for Inter for only £2,000,000 too while Jonas Gutierrez was released at the last minute when a contract was apparently ready to be signed. Olivier Giroud was Perez' replacement, along with Rickie Lambert and Admir Mehmedi.

Despite being under immediate pressure for the transfer dealings, Martin Jol and Newcastle got off to a flying start and by Christmas it did look like the club had a real shot at European football as they sat fifth, but an awful run throughout January and February saw Martin Jol almost sacked before consolidating in 9th.

It was the 2016/17 season where Martin Jol met his fate though. Newcastle United set out for European qualification, either through the league or a cup victory. But there was then a spat as Martin Jol wasn't getting the necessary funds or say in who could come and go. The club didn't sell anyone big and this meant Mike Ashley had a tighter grasp on his cash, especially with Sports Direct losing a lot of ground in their Market. Filip Djuricic was the biggest deal for Newcastle at less than £3,000,000. Mo Salah, of Chelsea, and Jordan Ibe, of Liverpool, joined on loan to add a bit of flair and pace to the wider areas but Martin Jol found his Newcastle United side 19th in November and he was given the boot.

Eddie Howe was given the job, he had been a Bournemouth legend for his promotion to the Championship and then Premiership in 2015. The move was widely seen as bizarre since his Bournemouth side were sat in a higher position and Newcastle United were in a bit of bother. He was given no room to maneuvre in the January window but a strong run of form over Christmas and then again in March meant they were looking alright but not before long as their form plummeted after a few injuries. Thankfully for him, his ex side Bournemouth joined Wigan and Cardiff in having absolutely shocking seasons so Newcastle survived in 17th.

The 2017/18 season was a much brighter one for the club and Eddie Howe. While Ashley looked like he'd offer some more cash to be spent after a successful financial campaign commercially, the save of Janmaat to Barcelona also took in almost £20,000,000. Brazilian International Diego, once of Wolfsburg, came in. He was joined by Ezequiel Cerutti and Efe Ambrose in the other two big deals. Eddie Howe said this could be the foundations for a new side, despite still receiving critics for the ageing side and lack of new additions. It was unsure what the side were aiming for but looked in contention for continental qualification for quite some time but inconsistent performances had the team settle for 8th. A world away from a relegation battle nonetheless.

Last season was a brighter one again, however, the sale of Moussa Sissoko left a huge hole in the middle of the park. He had established himself as a strong central midfielder and his replacements never stepped up to the mark. The £10,000,000 duo from Manchester City were poor, while Munir from PSG could have been a huge coup the player was very average and only had the one season before getting a move to Italy.

An unbelievable start to the season had Newcastle lurking in the top 4, Olivier Giroud was looking good despite being 32 and Cerutti, too, was causing problems until things just turned on their heads and club plummeted to 9th. They were knocked out of both cups early on too. It was believed Eddie Howe would be given the boot but Mike Ashley had had his fun at the club. He was ready to sell, at first there was a Chinese tycoon, Chan tse Xki. He had made a fortune selling electronic goods across Asia and successfully broke the American market however, there was disagreements and he refused to continue talks with Mr Ashley - and then the Brazilians appeared. The consortium had recently come out of a trial for the deaths of construction workers across South America - some going back to 2012 and 13. There was then the issue of their involvement in the corruption at FIFA and a wide range of problems in South America, however, they got out unscathed and wanted to buy Newcastle United.

They did. Mike Ashley was gone. Newcastle United fans were utterly shocked, but upset at the fact the Chinese bloke didn't get the keys. The club faced an uncertain future but cash has been promised. Eddie Howe was removed and it looked like Brazilian club, Atletico Mineiro manager Mano Menenez would join the Brazilian board but Alan Shearer was apparently involved in making a few calls after Menenez refused the move. James McKenzie was interviewed, as was David Moyes and Jamie Carragher.

James McKenzie has his work cut out.

It was the day of the big game, it had been a long wait due to International fixtures but I did manage to get my backroom in place despite the Brazilians wishing I left it be. While there was a headline of John Carver slating me and saying I didn't have what it takes. Eddie Howe, in an exclusive with TalkSport, said he was confident I'd be able to do well - pretty much criticised himself in the process. Leeds United, away.

We were shocking, the players didn't fight and this has unfortunately been the case for Newcastle United for years now. I need cash in January to rejuvinate this side, real money has to be spent for a European push. The ageing side would be seen in relegation scraps not Europe. We have a lot to do, but I will need a miracle to go for it. Despite my love for playing nice, passing football that worked so well at Crewe I think I have to revert to counter attacking direct football to try get something. Manchester City, away next. The gulf between the Premier League and Championship is scary.

Stuart Pearce replaced me, never really liked him as a manager so interesting choice. Perfect club for him to sort his career out and start again really, 2 games 2 losses. May it be noted he is on way more than I was!

No Sunshine in Newcastle

Okay, I knew the step to the Premier League would be tough. I knew the pressures surrounding Newcastle United, especially now with the owners desperately trying to look good for the fans. Nevermind the fact they what to see European football when I have been given no funds and a team who don't have a winning mentality - there's no mentality. No one wants to play. My star man Remy Cabella has been suspended too, so I haven't had that special touch in the final third.

I started off away at Elland Road, we were poor and I decided that I could opt for a more direct approach come Manchester City, Ayoze Perez once of Newcastle United, now ran out for them and he was a big threat. As was Sergio Aguero. We managed to hold our own in the first half, however, a lapse in the second half fell again. Much like in our game against Leeds United where the defense crumbled. A touch of magic from Sergio Aguero saw him fire one home, Perez worried us constantly before finding himself two. 3-0. It would never be easy but what happened was definitely avoidable. The lads had to pick up, we are lacking something in that final third.

*BADGES COMING SOON*

We are real short in the middle of the park, injuries to Nitcham don't help. Desperate to add but I am not sure finance will come my way, like promised - well, they asked if I could handle vasts amount of money and resources responsibly - and to be fair up until now I have made my own money but I can't sell.

We'd finally get to St James' Park for my home debut, I'd be slightly more confident as we were up against Huddersfield. We were short though, I'd try play Cerutti up top again and hope for a better performance. Huddersfield were doing decent but we should be worrying them. This wasn't to be though, history repeated itself as the first half bored on. In the second half, Johnny Russell managed to find space wide and his wall across the front post met Harry Bunn's head. From here we continued to look weak and poor as Russell grabbed his own with a good bit of footwork. 2-0. No goals yet, or a point.

We were home again, Aston Villa were struggling too and I completely changed things with the return of Remy Cabella. We'd be creative, we'd play our game, the game I drilled into the head of all the boys at Crewe. It was only in the second half where action ensued though, Cabella won a free kick and delivered it perfectly to the back post Yago was there! It's our first goal! We created a few more chances as Cabella worked and worked, immediately changing our side. Aston Villa did breakaway and had a goal called off for offside but I'd have said it was on - shh. Cabella and Colback linked through the middle before Richard Holloway was played through, and scored. He was given a shot as we were firing blanks up top. He managed to help us to our first win along with Cabella so I am chuffed.

It will be tough to get a good run together though, Liverpool at Anfield is next. I've faced of against Rodgers' side once before at Wembley - this is different circumstances though, and maybe even more important. Let's just play our game!

Liverpool are too good, I'm avoiding the press and going drinking. They were clinical, they worked for every ball and worked the ball around unbelievably. Rodgers 2 - 0 McKenzie. Holloway scores again, had 1 also wrongly called offside. Liverpool are unbelievable though.

I think a drink is definitely in order after that one mate, very tough start! :S

Man, Solbakken taking no prisoners! Calling for your head after what? 5 games?
