Morale-a-thon
With the lads being as good as they are, and us being in League 2, we were always going to receive offers in this January Transfer Window. But I was flooded with emails, faxes and calls asking for the players. All rejected, of course.
The players' agents had been informed of the offers, as they came in, and of course were understandably unhappy when I denied them the chance to play at a higher division. "Patience." I told them; but it wasn't going to work on everyone.
The only signing of January was that of promising Stevenege left-back, and future England star Lee Wilcox. Ryan Nouble also head out on loan to Northampton.
"Look, lads. I created this club, not for me. Not for the fans, but for you guys. I want to give you a future, a great future. I want to make sure you don't end up like every other England reject. I want to save you guys from rejection and I am doing this because I truly believe that all of you can make the England team at some point in the future and I am helping you there."
I had sat the lads down for that team-talk on the 31st of the month, after two losses and two draws in our worst month to date. The fight had not been helpful in encouraging them, so I had to intervene.
We'd only conceded three goals in January, and yet we only got five points from five games. The defense was performing well; but the strike-force lacked that cutting edge when Nile Ranger wasn't about. He is the key.
I also got a call from Terry Venables, wondering if I've got a job for him in my backroom staff. He said he loves the idea of what we're doing and wants to be a big part of it. I've allowed him to become a coach, and along with Brian Eastick and Gary Lewin, the backroom staff is further improved upon.
Not long yet until we get one step closer to developing into a Premier League club. Not long yet until clubs fear us and our future greats. Not long yet until we taste silverware for the first time. And not long yet before these lads get their chance on the greatest stage of all, in the shirt that bares Three Lions.
