END OF LEAGUE WRAP UP
I finished the season last night, I couldn't stop so I just played it right through and took lots of screenshots to remind me of what happened. The title race came down to Porto vs. Benfica, that much has been clear for a while. The race for the final Champions League spot once again came down to Maritimo, Braga and Sporting.
Table on March 6th
Benfica 51
Porto 50
Maritimo 46
--------------
Braga 46

Just to make things easier to follow. Porto holds the tiebreaker over Benfica, so if they end up tied, Porto will finish ahead. As of March 6th, Maritimo wins all tiebreakers with Braga and/or Sporting. Braga holds the tiebreaker over Sporting.

Crucial win for Sporting as they need to stay within 3 points of Maritimo. Braga dropped two important points at Setubal.

Benfica back on top thanks to help from Braga. Maritimo finally dropped points, allowing Sporting back to within a point which is important because of their early season 1-0 loss to Maritimo. Adriens goal was only his 4th league goal all season, but 1 more would net him a 425K bonus. As bad as this sounds, I will try to prevent him from scoring that goal. Even with the impressive draw against Porto, Braga are fading fast.
Game 28
Porto 1 Rio Ave 1

Porto back on top this week, Maritimo back to three points up on Sporting. Sporting were down 2-0 with 10 minutes left before Dier scored what I think is his first goal for Sporting (during the save anyway), and then in the 3rd minute of injury time Adryan tied the game.

Braga 4 Beira Mar 0 (rescheduled extra game from earlier)

Maritimo really blew a big opportunity here, with a win they would have gone 6pts up and clinched a Champions League berth with one game remaining. Instead they face Sporting in the final match needing to not lose by more than a goal. So, Sporting holds their own fate in their hands on the final day for the third year in a row, so far they are 50/50.
The tiebreaker goes like this:
Maritimo beat Sporting in the first match 1-0, they also hold a goal difference edge of about 10 goals. So, if Sporting wins by a goal then the head-to-head record is the same (I tried to find out if they use away goals in the tiebreaker but was unable to determine this), the next tiebreaker is goal difference and Maritimo would win that. So, Sporting needs a 2 goal victory, Maritimo needs anything but a 2 goal loss (or more).
In the title race, Porto need to win or draw against Beira Mar and they clinch the title regardless of what Benfica does against Braga. It seems like the same old story, Porto has an easy final game and Benfica needs them to slip up.
With a tough match at Benfica, Braga could lose their European place altogether if Setubal wins against Estoril.
Final Day
Porto v. Beira Mar
Benfica v. Braga
Maritimo v. Sporting
Vitoria Setubal v. Estoril
For those of you who don't follow Portuguese football, Maritimo aren't supposed to be this good. It's been a bit of an annoyance having to deal with an extra team that I didn't expect to have to deal with. At this point they may have usurped Braga in the "Big 4" of Portugal.
