Tactics & Training: The " I have a small question " thread

My question is how do i get the best out of my full backs, They always have the lowest rating on the field and score/assist the least. I play a tweaked version of a 4-3-3 with inverted wide forwards cutting in, but i just cannot see the beautiful play from Dani Alves as he is now. (2nd in La liga Assist ranking behind Messi)

Attacking
Creative Freedom: Normal
Passing: Mixed
Closing down: Own Half
Run rom deep Often
Run with ball Sometimes
Long shots, through ball Croos ball rarely.

I don't have any great headers so wining crosses is very hard for me. Also my wingbacks are the players who run the most so thereforre i have set the Closing down to own half instead of whole pitch.

So can you help me

Play your Wing Backs as either Wing Back, Support and Wing Back, Automatic, or Wing Back Support and Wing Back, Attack.

They will roam up the field, fill the space left by your wingers and generally get into the thick of the play.

I forgot to say I play with Classic Tactics, also the thing is; i don't say this to brag or something but i am succesfull the problem is Dani Alves doesn't play a great role for me as he does IRL for Barca.

Also i watched his stats for playing in Brazil ingame and there his stats were much better too, that could be due the fact that Brazil do not play with any other wide players.

My tactic isn't working anymore.. I'll explain the roles and duties here, so anyone could correct the horrid mistakes I am making :p

GK
WBL - attack
CD - cover
CD - stopper
WBR- attack
MC- deep lying playmaker - defend
MC- deep lying playmaker - defend
AMCR - inside forward - attack
AMC - adv playmaker - attack
AMCL - inside forward - attack
ST - adv forwar - attack

Very fluid
Control
More direct passing
Press more
Aggressive tackling
Rest is default I suppose

Any changes necessarily to be made?

If your tactic doesn't work anymore it might be that AI has used to your tactic and can make counter tactic to it. But I would also suggest shorter passing, as direct passing will kill your wingbacks when team loses the ball quickly to failed through pass. And changing AMCR&L to AMR&L could also help, as playing them in the middle leaves so much space for opposition fullbacks. You should also look at your ratings and check which players play badly, and try to tweak their roles or PIs (player instructions).

Has anybody noticed that crossing didn't work in this game. My wingers try like 20+ crosses every game and my team rarely score from them. I've tried with some teams, wingers, strikers, and various settings but still no success.

Also what PI is needed to get the best from Deep Lying Playmakers??I have DLP with good creativity and passing but they rarely make any key/killer passes. I've give them much creative freedom and direct passing but still no good either

When you're playing with 1 striker, is it better if he's a Target Man Attack, Poacher, Trequartista or maybe sth else?

Or does it mostly depend on the tactics?

It depends on many things.

- The formation
- The approach
- The player
- The roles of his teammates

If playing a 4411, then its better to use a more advanced player up front as the space in the hole where the TQ drops into is already crowded. If playing through the middle in a narrow approach, then a Target Man might not be the best of choices as he will struggle to find space but if playing down the flanks, then a mobile TM might be a god choice.

You also have to consider not only the ability of the player, i.e, his actual ability of carrying out the instructions his been given, but also him ppms. If you want him to move into channels from an advanced position, stretching the defence, this approach wont work if he likes to come deep and dwell on the ball.

The Roles of his teammates must also be taken into consideration. It no good having a drifting FC if the rest of the team lacks in movement, no runs into the area being taken

In the first 3 matches against him i won . but now he changed formation to 4-2-3-1 and my a.man says that we struggle against 4-2-3-1 tactics. Porto formation 4-2-3-1 is with 2 dm 3 mc and one striker (Hulk). . My formation is 4-1-3-2 but now with no success against Porto. What formation and tactics i need to play to beat him... thanks ;)
P.S. i played narrow and slow but now he used the same tactis.... :(

Try playing a 4-5-1 to counter act the 4-2-3-1. You can use one of your central midfielders or a defensive midfielder to man-mark their attacking midfielder, and a central midfielder to man-mark their central midfielder or defensive central midfielder.

Then use a counter-attacking strategy against them, with the fast wingers you should have on your team, complimented by your tall striker upfront. I wrote an article on Sunday about counter-attacking football. Maybe you could take some of things out of that and adapt it to your game.

It's here.

What will i do when my Backroom Staff tell me that my team struggles against teams who play with the following..... 'Slow Tempo' and 'Narrow Width'???

Play the opposite? Or at least if it is that your team struggles against teams that play a slow tempo, play a normal tempo. Same for width. Either wide or normal.

Adapt it to their pitches as well, when you get the report from your scout.

is it possible to keep a targetman in the middle ?
so far ive done everythhing i can think of.
no creative freedom
no forward runs
cut insde
no closing down
and combinations of the above

my wingers now get crosses into the box but my 6ft + striker is either stood next to them or too late to get into the box

Does this player have any ppms ?

theres not one specific striker, just a type i go for.
the two current targetman types i have one has none and the other has " plays with back to goal "

should add my wingers are in the amr and aml positions

I'm playing as Blackpool and although I'm doing good defensively surprisingly it's my attack that's doing poorly. Campbell is injured and we're really missing him I need a pacey striker to beat the defender to the ball and my midfield aren't doing as well as I would have liked. Adam was brilliant in pre season for me putting in fantastic through balls to my strikers but since the league started he hasn't done anything that's stood out.

Played a few 2nd team players in my League Cup 2nd round tie against Colchester but there was still a lot of 1st teamers on and yet we only won 2-1 in extra time. The goal they scored was from a set piece but still it took us until the 110th minute to score the winner.

This game was just after I managed to hold Everton to a 0-0 draw in the EPL. I still haven't scored a goal in the league and even though I've only had 4 games it's starting to worry me and I have drawn Chelsea in the 3rd round of the league cup so the team really has to start scoring soon

We scored a total of 17 goals in pre-season and the only game we didn't score in was our last game against the Man Utd reserves where it finished 0-0, that was the only game we didn't win.

So does anyone have a tactic that they found to be really effective as Blackpool?

when I give indvidual instructions inside a tactic.. do those instructions stay with the player in that role at the time or do the instructions apply only to the position??

Say I have an older player who I tell to pass and through ball and run less, then sub him with another player whos passing is worse but a better runner does my insructions stay with the player when he's in that position and then returns to it or does the instructions only link to that position?

Substitute has the same instructions, you have to manually change it to fit your sub.

I've made a tactic and want to test it with a wide range of teams but obviously to play a whole season for each would take ages.
so my question is what affect does holidaying have on the use of your tactic? I know you can set it so your AM uses your tactic.

i have signed galeano and vrsaljko for newcastle and was wondering if it would be dangerous to play them at the back week in week out with them both being so young?

Depends on what your coaches and scouts say. If they say that they are good enough to be bought by the majority of Premier League clubs, then they look good enough to play for you on a regular basis.

But it does come with it's flaws. Their inexperience, lack of high attributes and age will be factors. I would suggest playing them in rotation with Williamson, Campbell and Coloccini.

It depends on your Assistant Manager. If he is good one, then he will be able to play your tactics well, and your team should generally play well. If he is poor, both your tactic and your players suffer.

Look at his attributes.
