English Premier League - Game 16 - Blackburn Rovers (Home)

We’ve only played Blackburn once before - way back in season two, when we lost on penalties in the League Cup Quarter Finals. Hopefully the first choice side can get the job done today and keep us rolling in the league. Like most of our opponents, Blackburn have set up to defend.

In the 9th minute we were in the lead, as Chambers’ weighted ball for Doebel was squared by the winger, and Gitschier put it away.

Laporte added a second in the 50th minute with a header from Ward-Prowse’s corner.

Persson and Rodriguez replaced Vietto and Jacobsen in the 69th minute.

Persson was denied at point blank range from Dimarco’s 79th minute cross.

But less than a minute later he made up for it with a close range volley from another Dimarco delivery.

Clasie replaced Ward-Prowse in the 86th minute.

Just two minutes later we carved them apart again, and a very unselfish cutback from Doebel left Persson with the easiest of finishes for his second of the game.

A comprehensive win as we were never in any trouble. Persson now has five goals in his last two appearances, one of which was only 20 minutes! Doebel is also performing very well on the right wing, which is fantastic to see.

English Premier League - Game 17 - Manchester City (Away)

We travel to the Etihad today to put our unbeaten league record on the line against Man City. It’s worth noting that, as impressive as we’ve been, we’ve actually drawn all of our tough away fixtures - Man United, Roma, Everton, Arsenal - except for the Cup game we lost to Arsenal, admittedly with a weakened side. It would be nice to win one for a change. Our three games after this one are also incredibly tough: Liverpool at home, Chelsea at home, and Liverpool away, with just a single day in between the last two fixtures.

In the 28th minute we profited from a bit of luck to take the lead, through Own Goal! Laporte cracked a volley from Ward-Prowse’s corner, and it hit the man on the post before rebounding off Højbjerg and into the net! We’ll take it, we’ve had enough misfortune lately that we're due a lucky break.

In the 50th minute Dragowski kept us ahead by making a great double save on Sterling from close range.

Jacobsen replaced Rodriguez in the 62nd minute.

Super-sub Persson was summoned in place of Vietto in the 67th minute.

Tadic replaced Doebel in the 77th minute.

And we held firm!

Not our most exhilarating or dominant display by any means, but an impeccable defensive performance and a slice of luck saw us take all three points back home with us. We failed to put a single shot on target yet still won - though that statistic is misleading, because Laporte’s volley which led to the own goal was going in, it was just cleared off the line by a defender and thus counts as blocked and off-target. From then on we mostly just held possession and kept things tight. City drop to 8th, but are still just 4 points off 2nd, who are a whopping 13 behind us.

Haven't been on here in a while, good to see how well you are doing - can he manage an unbeaten season?! Keep up the good way - you're running off with it already :)

Good to have you back :) It seems entirely plausible right now, which is quite incredible considering my target for the season was top 3. The youngsters have surprised me and it would really take a monumental disaster not to win from here

English Premier League - Game 18 - Liverpool FC (Home)

Second placed Liverpool FC are our guests today. Given our home form, chances are they won’t be second after today, but we can’t take them lightly, as players like Coutinho, Aboubakar and Shaqiri are genuine match-winners.

Our plans were thrown into turmoil as Doebel twisted his knee early on. He was replaced in the 6th minute by Rodriguez, who switched flanks with Jacobsen.

In the 10th minute though Gitschier fired us in front with a cracking shot from just inside the area after a cleared Dimarco cross was returned to him by Larsson. Superb strike!

In the 18th minute Gitschier darted between Clyne and Can down the left and raced into the box. St. Juste came across to tackle him near the byline, but Can pulled his compatriot back, and a penalty was given! But Vietto was denied from the spot! **** it!

Just a minute later we were down our end, where a sublime Coutinho backheel sent Aboubakar through - and he hit the post! Süle cleared the loose ball just before the striker could get to the rebound.

In the 23rd minute Vietto was able to make amends for his penalty miss, picking up the loose ball when Gitschier was tackled, and darting into the gap between the defence, before slotting into the bottom corner - ironically, from the penalty spot.

Ward-Prowse sent a scything ball through for Gitschier in the 28th minute and his narrow angle shot was saved by Mignolet. It went to the other side towards Jacobsen, but Bertrand managed to get a vital touch before the Norwegian could line up the open goal.

Incredibly, in the 42nd minute, substitute Rodriguez suffered an identical fate to the man he replaced, Doebel. Tadic was his replacement.

In the 48th minute Aboubakar once again hit the post, this time after escaping unmarked to meet Coutinho’s free kick with a vicious half-volley.

Tadic’s first time flick on in the 53rd minute freed Vietto, but his first time effort was straight at Mignolet.

In the 71st minute it was Gitschier’s turn to hit the post after being picked out by Ward-Prowse’s delightful ball.

Balic was on for Ward-Prowse in the 79th.

Gitschier’s match rating of 8.3 doesn’t do justice to his influence, as he was an absolute menace to the Liverpool defence today. He was robbed of an assist when Vietto missed from the spot too. Dimarco stood out again too, whilst Ward-Prowse was excellent ahead of his substitution for tiredness. Two injuries to wingers, an area we are already weakened in thanks to Asensio’s absence, could be a serious concern ahead of games against Chelsea and Liverpool again later this week, in the space of 3 days!

English Premier League - Game 19 - Chelsea FC (Home)

Chelsea have been as disappointingly inconsistent as the other supposed title challengers, and are right in the thick of what appears to be a fight for second place. However, I have a really poor record against them - a solitary win and two draws from nine encounters, and they’ve been in good form of late. Hopefully we can maintain our perfect home record and make it two wins here. Ward-Prowse has been shifted out to the wing due to the absence of three of my specialists.

A lovely sequence of one touch passing from Clasie, Gitschier and Jacobsen saw the latter pick out Vietto, but Courtois made a superb save to turn his 5th minute shot wide.

Just two minutes later Vietto picked out Jacobsen, who smoothly breezed past Mario Fernandes, but once again Courtois came up trumps with another sensational save. **** it!

Laporte’s header from the corner fizzed just over the bar.

In the 42nd minute Jacobsen lofted a ball through for Vietto, which he took past Nkoulou, and cut inside of Stones, but sent it agonisingly wide of the far post. Courtois was motionless.

Finally, in the 44th minute, we had our reward! Ward-Prowse’s corner was headed back across goal by Süle, and Laporte rifled it in with a lovely half-volley!

And in the 56th minute we were two goals to the good, as Wanyama saw space open up in front of him, and he passed forwards to Vietto, who slotted into the bottom corner! Great stuff, but Chelsea have overturned a 2-0 deficit against us before.

In the 68th minute Tadic replaced Wanyama. He went to the left wing, Jacobsen to the right and Ward-Prowse to midfield.

In the 80th minute we sealed the deal, as Jacobsen surged down the right and whipped in a cross. It was headed away by Fernandes, but Tadic headed it straight back in, and Gitschier brought it down on his chest, turned, and fired past Courtois!

Gitschier was replaced two minutes later by Sindelar, who moved Vietto to the left wing and Tadic behind the striker.

Balic replaced Ward-Prowse a minute later.

Courtois denied Jacobsen at his near post after another darting run from the youngster in the 90th minute.

Well I was genuinely uncertain before that match, but the only person Chelsea succeeded in worrying all match was the referee as they kept picking up yellow cards. On the other hand, we were superb, as we comprehensively dismantled them time and again, outshooting them 24-6 and holding 62% of possession, and only the brilliant Courtois prevented us making it embarrassing. 3-0 is very convincing though, and at the halfway point we remain unbeaten. A trip to Anfield in just two days is our biggest threat to that record - particularly after they thrashed West Brom today - followed by the return fixture at Stamford Bridge later in the season. At the start of the season I wanted my young team to finish in the top 3. Now I want them to become the Invincibles, and on the strength of that performance, we’ll be **** hard to stop.

POM: Calum Chambers (8.9, 0G, 0A)

English Premier League - Game 20 - Liverpool FC (Away)

A few changes are enforced, having had a single day between this match and the Chelsea clash. That’s why I rate this as our most dangerous remaining fixture - in isolation, Stamford Bridge is harder, but with our injuries and slight fatigue, we are weaker today than we hopefully will be when we face the Blues again. Liverpool are back up to 2nd despite losing to us a week ago, and won’t want a repeat result. Their chief tormentor of last weeks fixture, Gitschier, is not one of the rested players and will look to terrorise the Reds’ defence once again.

It was Tadic who put us in the driver’s seat in the 19th minute though, after Vietto chipped the ball across goal to him and he rifled a half-volley just beyond the desperate dive of Mignolet.

In the 47th minute Vietto scored for the third straight game as he pounced on the rebound when Mignolet threw himself in front of Gitschier’s strike. Great pass from Ward-Prowse to find the German initially.

Ward-Prowse struck the crossbar in the 53rd minute as we continued to pile on the pressure.

In the 57th minute it was game on though, as Son Heung-Min was the most determined player in the 6 yard box, sliding to meet Clyne’s cross and divert it past Dragowski. Impressive commitment, as he out-slid Nishimura.

Persson replaced Ward-Prowse in the 69th minute. He moved up top, Vietto to the left and Tadic to the right.

In the 74th minute Dragowski threw himself at the feet of Son to prevent him turning home another Clyne cross. Excellent save.

Larsson and Jurcik replaced Wanyama and Süle in the 75th.

Two minutes later Gitschier sent a gorgeous killer ball through, and Persson timed his run perfectly to meet it…and was hacked down by Ilori! Inches outside the box, just before he got to the ball! Ilori was already on a yellow, and there was no way he wasn’t getting another. I still felt robbed.

Gitschier forced a superb save out of Mignolet with a first time shot from outside the box in stoppage time.

Well I’m very happy, as we came through that very difficult fixture not only with our unbeaten record intact, but with all three points. Gitschier was once more outstanding, and Liverpool must be sick of the sight of him. A class above the rest on the pitch. He has to win Golden Boy. Looking at the bigger picture, we just had four tough league matches in a row - City away, Liverpool and Chelsea at home, and Liverpool away, and not only survived unbeaten but won all four! And all without one of our star players in Asensio, who leads the team in Average Rating and was top scorer when he was injured. Incredible stuff from the team!

POM: Moritz Gitschier (9.0, 0G, 1A)

Tobias Andersson doubled his league tally for the season by netting a hat trick for Ipswich. Great stuff!

English Premier League - Game 21 - Ipswich Town (Away)

We shouldn’t have much trouble against Ipswich, provided we don’t switch off for a perceived easier fixture after the tough run from which we emerged unscathed. It’s also worth remembering that Ipswich beat us last time we were their guests, though we beat them in the subsequent home game. Vietto starts on the left wing with Persson up top. Asensio resumed training today but isn’t fit enough for the squad.

Smithies denied Gitschier in the 12th minute after Jacobsen’s run and cross presented him with a header.

In the 21st minute Jacobsen was at it again, racing down the flank and cutting it inside to Persson, who slotted home at the near post.

Then in the 36th minute Persson was injured. He was replaced by Sindelar.

In the 40th minute Vietto cut inside skilfully and threaded the ball through for Gitschier, but he somehow missed the target.

In the 58th minute Anichebe equalised for Ipswich with a header from a corner.

A minute later Gitschier slipped the ball to Sindelar, who skinned the defence with ease, but Smithies’ fingertips denied him the go-ahead goal.

Larsson replaced Clasie in the 65th minute.

In the 74th minute we finally regained the lead! A long ball from Laporte was brought down by Sindelar, who squared for Gitschier. A defender slid in and diverted it goalwards. Smithies managed to claw it off the line, but Gitschier got to the loose ball and finished it.

Tadic replaced Jacobsen in the 78th minute.

In the 81st minute Dimarco picked out Sindelar with a cross, but his volley cannoned back off the post.

A relatively easy win, though it was concerning for a while once Anichebe had equalised, we regained the lead shortly afterwards and saw it out from there. Ipswich played well but couldn’t match our class. Good performances from Chambers, Vietto and Ward-Prowse in particular. Hopefully Persson is okay.

Injury News...

Persson will be out for just under a week, putting him in doubt for our FA Cup match.

Gitschier won the senior Player of the Month Award, with Laporte runner-up. On-loan Andersson claimed the Young Player award, with Jacobsen in third. I claimed the Manager of the Month Award yet again. Fontaine came third in the Player of the Month and second in Young Player of the Month in Scotland.

Lionel Messi claimed the Ballon d’Or and World Player of the Year, with Bellerin and James Rodriguez second and third respectively in each.

Gitschier was deservedly awarded the European Golden Boy, reaffirming his status as Europe’s most talented young player. Wonderful news for the young star who I’ve cultivated for the last four years.

Nishimura won both the Asian Player and Young Player of the Year Awards, and was named in the Asian All Star XI.

Jacobsen won the Norwegian Players’ Player of the Year. I was on the verge of loaning him out in the summer but he has grabbed his opportunity with both hands, and I’m delighted for him.

Unfortunately not everything was good news today. Asensio wanted a move to Barcelona, and the only way I could convince him to stay was to promise him the Champions League this season. Far from guaranteed, so we could be losing one of our stars come the end of the season, or at least have him unhappy for a few months, possibly causing a revolt. Fun times ahead then!

Transfer News...
Three young talents join us upon the opening of the transfer window. The two Brazilians look like serious players, though Luiz requires a work permit so will be loaned out, and I may choose to loan Wellington out too.

Transfer News...

I’ve confirmed a Bosman transfer which will see us rob FC Köln of a very bright talent. I’ve tracked him for a while but never made a move due to his injury proneness, which is very high, but you can’t go wrong on a free transfer, right?

Real Madrid came in for Balic, offering 11m rising to 17. I responded by demanding 30m + 50% of the next sale, and they accepted! Balic has been a solid player for us and is homegrown at the club, but he’s not worth that kind of money in my opinion. Wish I’d asked for 40m though! This sale will allow us to keep Wellington around for the remainder of the year, and as he’s 18, he can hopefully obtain homegrown status one day.

Another young Brazilian joins, this one a striker. He’s fast and a lethal finisher, and with some work on the rest of his game, could become a very dangerous forward. Without a work permit though, he will go on loan.

No surprises with Nishimura's awards. You look like the Premier is already in the bag and it being just a matter of seeing how many games before the end you can make it assured.

Nishimura has turned into a pretty handy player, Chambers has a real fight on his hands. For sure, I've changed my goal to going unbeaten though the CL is now a massive priority if possible because I don't want to lose Asensio. If we don't win the PL from here I think I should resign! :p

FA Cup - Third Round - West Bromwich Albion (Away)

Balic was going to start this FA Cup match, but with him now in talks with Madrid, Wellington is handed his Saints debut from the start instead. It’s a young team but they should still be too much for West Brom, particularly with the returning Asensio and Doebel in the lineup.

Butland was the first keeper called into serious action though, repelling Mbappé’s close range effort in the 6th minute.

In the 34th minute we hit the lead though, as a one-two from the Brazilian pair of Jorge Miguel and Wellington saw the left back released down the wing, and he sent in a cross which was volleyed home at close range by Sindelar.

In the 43rd minute Sindelar was the beneficiary of another cross, this one from Nishimura on the opposite flank, and he cleverly turned it home at close range again. Classy finish on the half-volley this time.

In first half stoppage time Fletcher gave away a penalty by fouling Jurcik as he leapt for an Asensio corner. Sindelar buried it in the top left corner to complete his hat trick!

Mbappé pulled a goal back in the 51st minute, sliding the ball under Butland after nice buildup play and a clever pass from Caicedo.

Dario Rodriguez replaced Doebel in the 63rd minute.

Muller replaced Larsson in the 75th minute.

Kranjcar replaced hat trick hero Sindelar in the 80th minute.

The young striker almost had his first goal for the club in the 84th minute when he was picked out by Nishimura’s cross, but his powerful volley was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Romero.

From the corner, Kranjcar then had not one but two efforts blocked, the second one on the line! Very unlucky.

He turned provider for Nishimura in stoppage time, but his effort was turned wide by Romero.

Some excellent performances today as we cruise into the next round of the FA Cup. Sindelar the undoubted standout player with his hat trick, but everyone performed well really, including Asensio and Doebel on their injury returns, and Wellington on debut. Good stuff. Also of note is that the top scorer in the competition is actually a youth player of ours, out on loan.

English Premier League - Game 22 - AFC Bournemouth (Home)

Bottom of the table Bournemouth at home. There’s only one acceptable outcome.

In the 2nd minute Süle headed Asensio’s corner back across goal for Laporte to head in at point blank range.

Vietto almost put us two up in the 7th minute after wriggling free of the centre backs but he then shot straight at Bond.

In the 34th minute Bournemouth equalised! Ward-Prowse tackled price just outside the box, and the ball rolled free to the back post for a tap in for Trejo.

In the 37th minute we restored our lead as Vietto’s first effort from a corner was blocked, but he put away the rebound.

Two minutes later Bond made a solid stop to deny Doebel at the near post.

In the 47th minute Ritchie gave away a penalty when he pushed Doebel over in the area. Asensio gave us our third by blasting the spot kick into the roof of the net.

Credit to Bournemouth though as they attacked from the kickoff, and only a reflex save from Dragowski kept Fraser’s missile out.

Vietto then added his second in the 64th minute after pouncing on the loose ball when Doebel was tackled brilliantly. I know how that feels, Bournemouth.

In the 68th minute Bournemouth were reduced to 10 men as Arter picked up his second yellow for tripping Wanyama.

Nishimura replaced Chambers a minute later.

Rodriguez and Muller were on for Doebel and Ward-Prowse in the 77th minute.

Bournemouth fought bravely, but ultimately we were just too good. Asensio underlined just how important he is to us with a sensational performance, which stood out despite excellent displays across the board.
