Xerez 0-1 Barcelona (Spanish Super Cup first leg)
(None)
Barcelona had a lot of the ball, as you'd expect, but they didn't offer much more than us in the final third. The difference in this match was they have a team of match-winners, one of them found the net and they duly won the match. We weren't outclassed like we perhaps should have been. The second leg at Camp Nou could well be a different story tho - not looking forward to that.

Xerez 6-0 QPR (EURO Cup 4th Qual.Rnd first leg)
(Mandzukic 4, Baptista, Velez)
Xerez's first ever European match ended in glory as we absolutely hammered the English League Cup winners. Mandzukic scored his first goal for us, and then three more, Baptista banged in a free kick and last years player of the season came off the bench to net another goal.
View attachment 266253

QPR ( 2 ) 2-6 ( 12 ) Xerez (EURO Cup 4th Qual.Rnd second leg)
(Velez 2, Baptista 2, Mandzukic, Jorda)
What a game!! We came out the blocks with a bang, killing off the tie with three goals in the first thirteen minutes. The scoring wasn't over there, we maintained our three goal lead at half time despite QPR's fightback-5-2 at HT. Jorda came on in the second half to bag our sixth and conclude the scoring. We have been drawn in EURO Cup group L with Rubin, Besiktas and Caen. Baptista went off with a knock, thankfully just a dead leg.
View attachment 266255

A very positive start to life at this level. Seven players made their debuts against Barcelona. We are yet to play a league game yet due to the EURO qualifiers clashing with our first game against Real Madrid. Instead our first game will now be against Sevilla, the team we beat in the cup final! Nothing easy on offer at this level.
View attachment 266257

Player of the Month:
Joao Baptista
This was a close call to pick Baps over Mandzukic. Baps contributed to 8 of our 12 goals against QPR setting up 5 and scoring three free kicks!!! Outstanding.

September 2012

Xerez 2-1 Sevilla
(Mandzukic, Pandiani)
(*Rueda sent off)
The first half was fairly even and i was worried when we fell behind. We responded almost immediately and the second half saw a much stronger performance, without getting a goal. The game got nasty as both teams had one sent off late on. Ten vs ten Pandiani broke the offside trap and rounded the keeper to slot home the winner.
View attachment 266260

Barcelona ( 3 ) 2-2 ( 2 ) Xerez (Spanish Super Cup Second Leg)
(Mandzukic, Tiago Gomes)
A game of two halves sums this game up nicely. Barcelona taught us a lesson in the first half, 9 shots to 0 and comfortably 2-0 up, should have been more. I got aggressive at my team and they responded magnificently, 7-2 shots in our favour, 4CCC's helped us restore parity on the night and we so nearly got a third.
View attachment 266261

Zaragoza 1-2 Xerez
(Mandzukic, Baptista)
We got off to a flier with two early goals but failure to add to them almost cost us the points as Zaragoza got one back late on.
View attachment 266262

Caen 1-3 Xerez (EURO Cup Grp L)
(Mandzukic, Velez, Jorda)
We won this game comfortably. Caen offered little and even less after they had a man sent off.
View attachment 266263

Xerez 2-1 Getafe
(Koikili og, Mandzukic)
The scoreline did not reflect our superiority in the game but we showed great character to come from behind to win to keep up our 100% start.
View attachment 266265

Granada 1-3 Xerez
(Baptista, Poli, Jorda)
A game we won from behind again. It was a game we deserved to win but for a long time it looked like a winner just wouldn't come for us, when it did we sealed victory with a third.
View attachment 266266

Xerez 5-2 Osasuna
(Rubio 2, Pandiani 2, Mandzukic)
(*Mateos sent off)
We won an astonishing game against Osasuna, coming from behind for the third straight game. Osasuna led 1-0 at half time. We scored 2 by the hour mark as Osasuna had 2 players sent off in quick succession either side of our second. Then with 9 men they equalized and looked like scoring again. When Mateos was sent off we actually stated playing better and sealed the victory with three late goals.
View attachment 266267

What a start to life in the top division! We have won 5/5 league games and sit second behind Barcelona.

October 2012

Transfer News:
Mehmet Topal
Age: 26 - Nationality: Turkey - Position: DM
From: Free Transfer - Fee: N/A - Date: 16/9/12
Mid-September Mehmet Topal was offered to me by his agent, looking for a club after being released by Valencia. I didn't need any convincing to snap him up there and then. By far and away my best DM and a decent age too. Only problem is we have 25 players registered for the league so he will have to wait until the January window for first team football. For now he will have to make do with cup duty.
View attachment 266486

Xerez 3-1 Rubin (EURO Cup Grp L)
(Mandzukic, Jorda 2)
A confident performance at home, brushing aside Rubin with ease.
View attachment 266488

Hercules 0-0 Xerez
(None)
Our first points dropped this season in the league, ironically against a side that was promoted with us last season. Wasteful finishing.
View attachment 266489

R.Sociedad 1-2 Xerez
(Pandiani 2)
We edged out Sociedad after a tough game, coming from behind again!
View attachment 266490

Besiktas 0-3 Xerez
(Jorda 2, Velez)
A first half of decisive finishing set us on the way to an impressive away win. Before this match, top scorer Madzukic was ruled out for three weeks with a twisted knee.
View attachment 266491

Xerez 3-1 Espanyol
(Jorda 3)
A sensational hattrick from Jorda, who doesn't seem to be fazed this level of football - certainly performing stronger than Velez.
View attachment 266492

Eibar 1-1 Xerez (Spanish Cup 4th Rnd First Leg)
(Velez)
No idea how we didn't win this match. Mendes gave away a penalty after we went one up, they converted it and sat back. We peppered their goal but to no avail.

Putting the Eibar result to one side, this was another pleasing month. With a far weaker squad we are keeping pace with Barcelona at the very top of BBVA, still unbeaten after eight games. Also performing well in Europe, still having a 100% record.
View attachment 266495

Player of the Month:
Rafa Jorda
Seemingly unfazed by the step up in class, he has performed magnificently despite not starting the season first choice. Scored seven goals this month, including the Espanyol Hattrick.

November 2012

At.Madrid 0-1 Xerez
(Tiago Gomes)
'At.Madrid wont believe they've lost this' - I can scarcely believe we won this game, completely outclassed we were grateful for Falcao's off day (although he had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside, which surely would have opened the flood gates) I had to change my tactics at half time to try and cling on to the 0-0, changing to 'park the plane' - this first time i have changed/used a different tactic. Tiago Gomes scored a bit of a wonder goal to steal the most unlikely victory.
View attachment 266503

Xerez 3-0 Besiktas (EURO Cup Grp L)
(Velez, Baptista (p), Rubio)
Besiktas offered little resistance and i'm sure we would have won even without their red card. It wasn't a dirty game despite how it looks with two injuries and a red card - both the injuries were only minor knocks.
View attachment 266504

Xerez 4-1 Sporting
(Baptista, Pandiani)
With Jorda and Mandzukic not yet match fit following injuries, it was Pandiani who reminded the fans of his exploits from last season.
View attachment 266505

Xerez ( 7 ) 6-0 ( 1 ) Eibar (Spanish Cup 4th Rnd Second Leg)
(Rubio, Mandzukic 2, Velez 2, Perrotta)
We made up for our first leg wastefulness with this comprehensive victory. Mandzukic, playing his first game after three weeks out with a twisted knee, went off with... a twisted knee, out for another three weeks.
View attachment 266506

Malaga 0-2 Xerez
(Velez, Pandiani)
Last season's strike partnership of choice were back at it again, making the difference it a tight game.
View attachment 266507

Xerez 2-0 Levante

(Pandiani, Navarro og)
(*Herrero sent off)
2-0 up in half an hour and thats how it stayed. A drab second half performance ended with a red card for Herrero.
View attachment 266508

Incredibly we are still unbeaten and now neck and neck with Barcelona at the top of BBVA. How long can we maintain this form? Still to play either Barcelona or Real Madrid yet so a proper test still lay ahead.
View attachment 266512

Player of the Month:
Walter Pandiani
El Rifle was back to his best, scoring a hattrick amongst other goals.

December 2012

Xerez 1-1 Mallorca
(Baptista)
A game we should've won. Not just because Pandiani missed a penalty but because we absolutely battered them. On the positive side, we came from behind again and remain unbeaten.
View attachment 266535

Xerez 5-2 Caen (EURO Cup Grp L)
(Rubio 2, Jorda 3)
Poor goalkeeping made this win more comfortable than it should have been, Caen's shop stopper failed to make a single save - not that i'm complaining.
View attachment 266536

Xerez 4-0 Racing
(Jorda 2, Pandiani, Mandzukic)
A fantastic win, nice to get a clean sheet too. Mandzukic made a goalscoring return to the side (again). Jorda is injured for 6 weeks.
View attachment 266537

Valladolid 3-3 Xerez
(Pandiani, Mandzukic, Baptista)
An awful defensive display in the first half gave Valladolid a 3-1 lead at half time. The second half was all us, finally getting two late goals (Baptista's equalizer a sublime free kick) We looked like we were going to win after the equalizer but still a good point after going two down.
View attachment 266538

Rubin 1-2 Xerez(EURO Cup Grp L)
(Mandzukic, Velez)
Velez slotted home a deserved winner in Russia to give us six wins out of six in the group.
View attachment 266539

Xerez 2-2 Barcelona
(Velez, Perrotta)
Outclassed for much of the game, Velez scored a late equalizer only for Messi to score a screamer with just minutes left. Somehow we still came out with a point thanks to Perrotta's tidy finish at the death. Behind twice and still unbeaten - our character is unquestionable - whether we can actually sustain this unlikely title challenge, is.

At.Madrid ( 1 ) 0-6 ( 10 ) Xerez (Spanish Cup Qtr Final second leg)
(Mandzukic 2, Rubio 3, Insua)
I feel a bit sorry for Atletico, they havent got the results they deserve against us... This was never a 6-0 game! Rubio scored his first Xerez hattrick and Insua scored his first Xerez goal, a free kick in Baptista's absence.
View attachment 266558

January 2013 Transfers

Meet the new guys:

Pablo Pintos
Age: 25 - Nationality: Uruguay - Position: DR
From: Getafe - Fee: 500k - Date: 2/1/13
The deal to sign Pintos was done way back in September. Finally he joins our team, as first choice right back - a problem area with Odiah and Cortes average at best. Pintos isn't much better, but he's better. Cortes will be sold in the summer, due to his more advanced age over Odiah.

View attachment 266596

Alex
Age: 15 - Nationality: Germany - Position: MC/ST
From: 1860 Munchen - Fee: 130k - Date: 2/1/13
Like the Pintos deal, Alex was signed months ago, waiting for the transfer window to open. An exciting prospect for the future.

Givaldo
Age: 18 - Nationality: Brazil - Position DC

A quality looking player, signed on loan for a season and a half. Coaches say he is the strongest DC in the squad.

As well as these January arrivals we tied up end-of-contract deals for:
Gelson Fernandes
Samir Handanovic
Juan Manuel Insaurralde
David Ospina
Nicolas Palios
and Walter Pandiani

Four players left the club in January:
Ludovic Giuly
Alvaro Silva
Israel Bascon
Miguel Angel Cordero
Also, i decided to terminate Chris Wood's loan contact due to having seven strikers.

Sevilla proved a tough test. Despite a stunning comeback from 2-0 down, we did not deserve the victory, we were poor on the day. Rubio injured for 4 weeks.

We are right tin the title hunt after Real Madrid beat Barcelona. We currently sit second 3 points below Barcelona but we have two games in hand - our fate is in our hands. With Mandzukic in this kind of form anything seems possible.

A surprisingly tough encounter against a team fighting for their BBVA lives. El Rifle saved our blushes.

Sporting 0-2 Xerez
(Jorda 2)
A brace from Jorda sealed another three points. Wickham injured for three weeks, leaving me tight for strikers in European games - down to three (Velez, Jorda and Rubio) with Wickham and Mandy injured and Pandiani not registered for European games. Amazingly Levante held Barcelona to a 0-0 draw the day before this game.

Racing 1-3 Xerez
(Jorda, Givaldo, Gonzalez Gonzalez)
Due to my shortage of fit strikers a 15 year old from our youth ranks made it on to the bench for this game. Gonzalo Gonzalez Gonzalez, a ridiculous name but my coaches rate him as the best prospect from this years batch of kids. The lad got on the pitch and even scored, becoming Xerez's youngest ever player and goalscorer and the same for BBVA at just 15 years and 44 days. Givaldo also scored his first Xerez goal. Meanwhile, Levante held Real Madrid to a 0-0 draw to complete a hattrick of strong performances, our 1-0 win now looks like a good result.

So, i found out before this game that the Barca manager is one Rafa Benitez, after he claimed not to be my biggest fan. Turns out Del Bosque left Spain in November and was replaced by Guardiola - who was replaced by Benitez. Anyway, thats pretty irrelevant, the game was a tight tense affair as you'd expect with so much riding on it. Barca had to win, if we had won we would be top by 4 points with 2 games in hand. Lionel Messi settled the game with a moment of genius with a goal similar to the mazy solo run through Real Madrid in the champions league. The title is still in our hands with 2 games in hand, 2 points below Barca. GGG made his first start, necessity rather than preferred selection though.

Amazingly we were again struggling for strikers. Due to fixture congestion at this late stage Jorda needed a rest - he made the bench, Rubio still injured and Pandiani + GGG unregistered, we started the game with Tiago Gomes pushed forward alongside Mandy and a very tired Wickham. Wickham was removed early in second half, replaced by right back Pablo Pintos!!

With only Wickham and Lopez likely to feature in the EURO Cup final this was not our strongest eleven. In fact Wickham and Lopez would not have played had GGG and Bizzarri been available (GGG with Spain U19s and Bizzarri injured) We were poor and got what we deserved from this game - nothing.

We came from behind to lead 2-1 before two more Real goals settled the final in their favour. We were the better team for long periods but Real had the class. Rubio went off with just a dead leg, a relief considering his injury problems this season. Mehmet Topal was not so lucky, fractured ribs will keep him out for 2 months - although we don't have a game for two and a half months now.

Wow! A sensational double! We managed to maintain our sensational form from last season at a higher level. I never thought it would be possible to win the league at the first attempt with the team i have. As i said before my target was 9th. I have bled the club dry with media rumours about us needing to sell out best/highest paid players to balance the books - so the success was vital to keeping this team together. I have a tough decision to make, having won a top division with a letter X club i should resign and get another job in another country, but i really want to stay and have a crack at the champions league next season.

After Xerez i will look to stay in Europe, only have Spain, England, Holland, Portugal, Germany, Italy and France loaded at the moment (will load more leagues when needed) although i will snub any offers from England, i want to finish this challenge with my beloved Man United.
