Pahahaha. Always SOMETHING to complain about eh, Calum? We have ATVO (which sucks) but that's being upgraded to Arsenal Player. Think there's some rumours we might be reinstating the TV channel but I'm not sure.

Right. I need writing ideas...

Planning on doing an article for STV Sport again after the season is finished, but I don't know what to write!

Will probably be in the AR-style: Tactical analysis with fancy chalkboards etc. but I need ideas... So far: An analysis of the Invincibles - Has Wenger, Arsenal (players not good enough?), or football changed? We'll be doing a season review anyway, but I've been told that that's not really the sort of thing STV are looking for in their new blog since it primarily focuses on something they don't cover!

Go!

Arsenal are prepared to sell Andrey Arshavin in the summer to fund the building of a new squad. Arsène Wenger has begun to cast the net for new signings and is understood to have indicated that Arshavin is surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium.

The club would want to recoup the £15m that they paid to Zenit St Petersburg in January 2009 and could reason that now is the time to do so, as Arshavin has two years to run on his contract and there has been little desire on either side to open negotiations over fresh terms. The difficulty, though, would be to find a club willing to match his £85,000-a-week wage.

It may come as a surprise to realise that Arshavin is comfortably Arsenal's appearance leader this season, with 51 in all competitions of which 15 have come as a substitute. He has contributed 10 goals, and the Arsenal manager has expressed the view that the forward's "numbers" have been acceptable.

Yet some of his performances have not met the standards expected of him and, for the first time in his Arsenal career, the Russia international has found himself on the outside looking in when Wenger names his strongest XI in the Premier League. Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri have established themselves ahead of Arshavin on the flanks, which has been the source of no little frustration and bemusement to him.

Arshavin has faced questions about his attitude, with a section of the Emirates crowd criticising him for a perceived lack of effort. His laid-back body language does not help in this regard but there has also been a feeling inside the dressing room that Wenger has indulged the player, who turns 30 on Sunday week, absolving him of the responsibility to track back. Arshavin has infuriated some of his team-mates in training with his lack of work ethic.

Wenger has felt that Arshavin's mercurial genius can compensate for the negatives but his patience has worn thin. Arshavin, who is known for his self-confident and outspoken nature, did not help himself last season when, on more than one occasion, he went public over his "dream" of joining Barcelona; even Wenger had to tell him to quieten down.

It is unclear precisely how much money Wenger will have to spend this summer. Supporters, who have been asked to pay an extra 6.5% on their tickets for next season, hope it is a considerable amount though many of them wonder what became of the £39m that Wenger raised through the sales of Kolo Touré and Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City in 2009, which did not appear to be reinvested in the squad. Wenger, however, is aware of the need to wheel and deal and Arshavin has been identified as a saleable asset.

The manager, as usual, is channelling most of his efforts into the French and African markets and he is not expected to splash out on expensive, big-name additions. He has said that his priority is to keep his existing key players, chiefly the captain, Cesc Fàbregas, who is a perennial target for his former club Barcelona, and Nasri, who is yet to sign a new contract and is poised to enter the final 12 months of his deal. Gaël Clichy also has 12 months to run but Wenger is confident of Kieran Gibbs's ability to step up, if required.

Although it's also worth pointing out that he's apparently signed an extension on his lease (1 year).

Errm - Man City... Do you fancy doing a quick swap? We'll have Tevez.. and you can have Arshavin? Or you could just buy him for £25m and wait until he flops like Kolo Toure (Drugs) & Emmanuel Adebayor (being a ****/not-actually-that-good-at-football)

wtf. guardian rumors suck. cant the media leave us alone

I'd be happy of we got rid of Arshavin for 10-15 million. Getting a bit old now and is far too inconsistent I'm afraid.

agree, but AW wont just sell cheap penny like that. it took till the last minutes of the winter transfer window to get him, and kinda cost money for arsenal. (at that time).

HA! **** you, Cunting Catalans FC!

Last time I'm telling you this:

Stop being a miserable ****! Enjoy it while we have him - if we start thinking that he doesn't want to stay, or it's only a matter of time before this, that and the other happens, then we'll never have anything to cheer about!

Can't see Fabregas staying in the summer, and this is the only year since he's been our most influential player that I'm okay with him leaving.

Realistically, though - he won't go anywhere bar Barcelona and they don't have the money at the moment. According to el Mundo Depor., they're looking to sign an expensive striker, and then buy someone less expensive at both CB and midfield. Plus they have Thiago coming through who looks a top prospect and may be ready for a spot in the First Team next season.

I agree it seems unlikely that we'll have him for much longer but we're under no financial pressure to sell cheap and if those rumours are true, we have him for at least another season! =D

The Scott Parker situation fascinates me.

The West Ham midfielder may have been voted Football Writers' Player of the Year this month, but he is currently splitting opinion among Arsenal fans.
The big rumour is that Arsene Wenger could break the habit of a lifetime this summer and bring in the 30-year-old England star who is enjoying something of a renaissance with the benefit of regular first-team football at Upton Park.
I think he would be a good, solid summer signing for the Gunners. But chatting to a few Gooners on Twitter last night, they are not convinced.

Not because they do not think he is a good player. More because they think he is currently a big fish in a small pond and could yet become a fish out of water at the Emirates.
Also because they fear his injury record could lumber Wenger with another Robin van Persie - excellent player but never completes an Arsenal season without getting crocked.
Personally I disagree. Parker's injury record is sound. Indeed, he actually played through the pain barrier - shrugging off a shoulder injury to help his side beat Liverpool back in February.

I think he is versatile, as he can play as a holding midfielder but he can drive forward if need be.
I think he brings desire, with the half-time team talk he gave his team-mates at West Brom - which inspired the Hammers from 3-0 down to 3-3 - evidence of his leadership ability, a commodity Arsenal are clearly lacking.
And there is my fascination. Arsenal fans have been saying for some time that the team is crying out for leaders.
The widely-held opinion is that, while Cesc Fabregas is a superb player, he is not a Tony Adams or a Patrick Vieira. He is not someone to rally the troops as Parker has done at West Ham this season.
So why the doubts about Parker? Well, some fans think Arsenal need a striker more.
Other fans think he is too old. But then in the same breath insist they don't want any more young signings whose best years are ahead of them.

One Tweeter last night insisted he was not interested in seeing the exciting young Blackburn defender Phil Jones at the Emirates as he was fed up with promising talent.
It seems to me that Arsene Wenger can't win here.
In the eyes of some, Parker is past it, Jones is not there yet and the players in between are too costly (there is little or no chance of Wenger paying the £20million Bolton want for 25-year-old Gary Cahill whose European experience consists of four UEFA Cup games in the Spring of 2008).
What is certain is that, with many of the Gunners' stars well aware that they are about to be shipped out performances have dropped so alarmingly that the club have had third place pinched off them by Manchester City.
Frankly, I am not a big believer in this whole idea that the British bulldog spirit will turn Arsenal back into winners.
But the never-say-die attitude that Parker has displayed for West Ham this season is badly needed by the Gunners.

Champions League - what if we finish fourth? | News Archive | News | Arsenal.com

Champions League - what if we finish fourth?

By Sunday evening we will know whether Arsenal have finished third or fourth in the Premier League - and how next season's Champions League adventure will begin.

If Arsène Wenger's side beat Manchester City to third place, it's simple. They will enter the Champions League at the Group Stage, which kicks off on September 13 or 14, following the draw on August 25.

If Arsenal finish fourth, they will enter the Champions League at the Play-Off Round and must win a two-legged tie to take their place in the Group Stage.

The draw for the Play-Off Round is on August 5 and the matches will be played either side of the second weekend of the Premier League campaign - the first leg is scheduled for August 16 or 17 with the second leg on August 23 or 24.

Possible opponents

So who could Arsenal face in a possible Champions League Play-Off? This is where it gets more complicated.

There will be 20 teams in the Play-Off Round but they are split into two sections - champions and non-champions. As non-champions, Arsenal could not face a side that won its domestic title in 2010/11. That list includes Rangers or FC Copenhagen, assuming they are still in the competition.

Arsenal's section of ten teams would feature:

The five winners from the non-champion section of the Third Qualifying Round (expected to include Benfica, Dynamo Kyiv, Twente and Rubin Kazan)
The fourth placed team from Spain (Villarreal)
The fourth placed team from Italy (Udinese or Lazio)
The third placed team from Germany (Bayern Munich)
The third placed team from France (one from Marseilles, Lyon, Rennes, Sochaux and PSG)
Once the ten clubs are confirmed, the five with the highest UEFA coefficients are seeded and will be drawn to play one of the five clubs with the lowest UEFA coefficients.

Arsenal's coefficient is bettered only by Bayern Munich in the list of potential teams in the Play-Off Round so Wenger’s side would definitely be seeded if they entered the competition at that stage.

As it stands, if all the seeded teams from the Third Qualifying Round advance to the Play-Off Round, Bayern, Arsenal, Benfica and Villarreal would be seeded. Unless Lyon finish third in France, the final seed would be Dynamo Kyiv.

In that scenario, Arsenal’s potential Play-Off opponents could be Udinese or Lazio, Rubin Kazan, Twente, a further qualifier from the previous round plus the French qualifier - one from Marseilles, Rennes, Paris Saint-Germain and Sochaux.

If Lyon do finish third in France, their coefficient would earn them a seeding. Therefore Arsenal's potential opponents could be Udinese or Lazio, Dynamo Kyiv, Rubin Kazan, Twente or a further qualifier from the previous round.

With so many ifs, buts and maybes it's difficult to give a clear picture at present. But as various European leagues reach their climaxes this month this page will be updated - if indeed Arsenal do finish fourth.

The worst-case scenario? Arsenal finish fourth, lose their Champions League Play-Off and enter the Group Stage of the UEFA Europa League.

Hopefully we can get the right result on Sunday so it doesn't come to that.

Arsène Wenger has confirmed Ryo Miyaichi will battle for a place in Arsenal’s first-team next season. The Frenchman will give hand the youngster an opportunity to impress during pre-season training.
However, Ryo’s involvement would depend on the successful application of a work permit. He wouldn’t be eligible for a conventional permit, due to a lack of senior international caps, but a case for a special talent visa will be lodged in the summer

Learn2paragraph. And why is there a full-stop without any words next to it?! lol

I don't think he'll get a WP, tbh. Look forward to seeing him in pre-season anyway - if he can't get a WP, we won't see him in the Emirates Cup (you have to register players) but he should play in other friendlies..

Hopefully we can get the right result on Sunday so it doesn't come to that.

Guardian don't make up their own rumours most of the time... And they have nothing to do with the Catalan press reporting stories about Fabregas and Guardiola and the players talking to the Spanish press about him.

The Arshavin rumour is completely different to the Cesc one. He's not being linked with a specific club for a start, and he's not been sought after for several years.
