Arsene Wenger expects to be active in the transfer window this summer but has warned Arsenal fans not to expect extravagant spending.

Arsenal finished the season with a whimper at Craven Cottage, where Theo Walcott's late equaliser rescued a point in a 2-2 draw with Fulham.
Wenger concedes he needs to strengthen if his side are to challenge for the title next season, but he is concerned by the spending power of those around the club.

The Frenchman insists he will not spend for the sake of it and will only target the right players to enhance his options.

"We have to be conscious that we cannot buy players for £50million. We fight with opponents who can do that."
Arsene Wenger
Quotes of the week
"We need good players, world-class players," Wenger told Sky Sports.

"We will try to buy the right players. Spending is not a purpose, it's not our goal. We want the right players.

Conscious

"We have to be conscious that we cannot buy players for £50million. We fight with opponents who can do that.

"You have to live in a realistic world, therefore we will give it our best to strengthen the team."

Meanwhile, Wenger refused to dwell on the draw with Fulham as a win would have seen them finish fourth regardless, meaning Arsenal must qualify for the UEFA Champions League group phase.

Arsenal, who lost at home to Aston Villa last week, were hoping for results to go their way to finish third, but Manchester City's win at Bolton confirmed the top four remained unchanged.

"Anyone can drop points here," Wenger said. "The result last week had a massive impact on the outcome of the league. So today, of course we had to win, but even if we had we would not have qualified directly."

18 league goals since January 1.
Legend

He could be nice replacement for Rosicky and would fit Wenger's transfer mentality: Cheap ( Free )

It's 18 league goals and he's third in Golden Boot after Berba and Tevez.

Isn't it just 18 goals, not 18 league goals (otherwise he'd of won the Golden Boot)

It's 18 in the League. He's scored 21 in all competitions since January, and 22 overall this season (penalty against Partizan Belgrade)

Love that everyone says we need a new CB who is strong, no-nonsense and can head just as Vermaelen returns. Forgot about him, didn't you? Naaah, let's just go and buy Cahill for £20M. He did really well today... And in Bolton's biggest game of the season of course. When the pressure was on. In the FA Cup Semi Final. Against Stoke. Oh.

I never really wanted Cahill to be honest 20M Is far to much for him

I'd rather Samba :)

*Waits for Joss to take bait* ;)

Joss would rather sit in a corner and cry about how ridiculous his chin is than talk to you, it would seem, and actively sent me to do his dirty work. I have nothing better to do, so:

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGHHH YOU FECKIN DIPSHIT SAMBA WOULD BE **** FOR ARSENAL BLAAARRGHHH

Nom.

I hate you.

Transfer window looks promising, first Denilson wants to leave now Sky Sports are reporting Bendtner is looking for a move away :D

Almunia, Denilson & Rosicky ‘free to leave’ Arsenal | Gooner Talk

We all knew about Denilson, but now more deadweight is being let go. Good signs that Wenger is going to strengthen the team :)

Bit harsh to call Rosicky "dead-weight", IMO. Hasn't had the best season and wasn't the same after his injury/ies but he has shown signs of his quality when coming off the bench this season - against Liverpool on the final day, for example, and remains one of those players who isn't afraid to cross the ball or to take a shot once in a while. (Even then he's criticised for shooting wide, or not picking out a team-mate - Oh the irony!).

Glad to see Almunia being shown the door and tbh, I don't really care where he ends up, as long as he isn't in Wenger's plans. The sign of a good player is bouncing back from a mistake, but Almunia's work ethic clearly hasn't been good enough and he hasn't improved since that season he replaced Jens as first choice. Denilson I'd like to see go to Spain, because I think he'll do well there. He hasn't cut it at Arsenal but part of that is due to simply not fitting into the system - like Busquets, he's neither an attacking, box-to-box, or defensive midfielder and he's only really useful for the occasional wonder-strike and retaining possession under pressure. I think he'd do well at a mid-table La Liga side: Less physicality in Spain and there's a more general focus on possession-based football.

Wilshere set to be left out of the England U21 squad after Arsenal made a video and sent it to the FA as evidence for the effect a full first season at this level has had on Wilshere and his body during games.

Wenger on Telefoot:

"The market will be hyperactive because everyone believes financial fair play will happen soon.
"So we are quickly doing the last buying before the stores will be closed. And for the very first time for a while, I will be very active too."

Looking good for you.

Did he actually say this: "And for the very first time for a while, I will be very active too." or is that a mistake in your translation? XD

I can't quite imagine him saying that but he has already said that he will look to spend and who knows, Kroenke may have given him a bit of extra cash.

I forgot to mention that on twitter yesterday, Swiss Ramble said that there was around 40M for Wenger to spend, with more available depending on player departures. The problem is the wage budget but again, there's more flexibility if players leave. Don't expect him to spend all of that, though; he'll spend wisely and I don't expect him to spend more than around £30-5M. An experienced CB is guaranteed, I think and he may look at another striker or a left-forward.

I copy-pasted from Sky, so he either said it, or they blew it with the translation.

The injuries have ruined him. He's just not good enough for the Premier League anymore.

Might go back to Germany.
