I sensed some Torres bashing...
The £50m pricetag has nothing to do with him, we can't hold that over him any more than we hold £60m over Kaka's head. Perhaps the knee injury he had post 08 Euro's that niggled for years has taken a yard of explosive pace away from him. But he does still have power, he still has all that skill that saw him light up the Euro's and he still has that humble demeanor off the pitch not 'living it up' or being a bad role model. I just don't see what Torres has done to deserve the amount of abuse he gets, he tries to score... It's not like he doesn't.
The guy is adapting his game to a new system, to a new team and a new philosophy around him. With respect to Liverpool of 07/08/09, Chelsea have very different players. To bring Torres in to a mechanical, through-the-motions set up that was very evident under Ancelotti and expect him to get 10 through balls a game and loads of chances was foolish. The system's changing slowly, Torres is adapting slowly and so is Mata who has had a couple of off games purely due to him adapting.
I know you'll throw at me his apps-goals ratio, 2 years ago Mario Gomez was labelled the biggest flop in world football and he couldn't buy a goal (Despite being very prolific for Stuttgart averaging 20 goals a season) saying that Gomez had lost his touch... Would you say that about him now?
His widemen are 'my ball' Malouda and ex poacher striker Anelka, give the guy a break. Besides them he either gets Sturridge who's really just a kid and he has no positioning sense at all about playing wide. The only real service he gets is the occasional Ramires link up or it's all on Mata...
My only criticism of Torres is pretty simple, Fernando get in the box he seems to be staying deep for some reason trying 20 yard shots when really for Liverpool he made his name in the channels and in the box...He should go back to that.
Everyone laid off Kaka for 2-3 years now, saying he had injuries etc... Torres has had a major issue with injury lately, that's caught up with him. So unless you want to plaster Kaka the flop across the world media, you can't justify holding Torres to account either. Torres is a guy who has won a European Championship with his displays, the breakthrough Championship for Spain, I could make a case that without Torres Spain would still be the 'nearly-but-not-quite' National team.
He will be back, when the system settle's and he has the right players/supply around him Fernando Torres will score a lot of goals for Chelsea.
Also, worth remembering he is under contract until 2016 and Chelsea's plan is to build the team around him... You really can't start panicking 9/10 months down the line into a 5-6 year deal.
