So I came here to claim internet points and gloat about how I butchered you all in the discussion we had about Del Bosque's striker selection, and then I remembered I was actually supporting Spain in this tournament and I'd much prefer to be wrong.

This is extremely confusing.

Frankly I'd say their strikers are the least of their worries...

I'll be the first to come out and put my hands up and acknowledge that Spain did lack a clinical finisher in their two games.

Spain bossed around everyone earlier, because they had the stability of Puyol in the team. In the first match, Pique and Ramos were both ball playing defenders, and both trying to run upfront, only to TRY to track back against Robben's pace.. And I have no idea how Costa fits into the system del Bosque is playing. He's arguably the best striker Spain has atm, but he doesn't fit into del Bosque's style of play.. Costa refuses to pass to teammates 90% of the times.. It'd have been ideal for Spain to play a DLF in order to link up play..

Anyone know why Navas was dropped from the squad? Didn't make an iota of sense back when I heard it, unless he was injured..

And a defence. And a competent goalkeeper. And a midfielder who could do something other than pass five yards...

Seeing alot of Chelsea fans saying they don't want costa because of his two Spain performances LOOOL not even considering the fact Spain's tactics do not suit him at all. Mind you the same fans probably want feruz and bamford in our first team next season.

You kinda just ignored literally everything that GC, Carl and I said. Shaw wouldn't be a better option. Luis is much much much better than him IMO. The wages and transfer fee needed to bring in Shaw certainly are too inflated for a player who is right now just 'potential'. Even if we do pay, it will be nearly impossible to move him on if he fails. Luis was successfull in a system that is very similar to ours so that would ease the adaptation process. By all accounts, Luis is a safer and better buy than Shaw

Not to mention that with the sale of Luiz, we are flush with cash and can easily spend upto 150m whe still complying comfortably with FFP regulations.

I wouldn't say Shaw is completely unproven tbh... I mean he's had a very good season for Southampton at the highest-level.... at the age of 18.... what more can one ask for? So I think it's more than just a case of potential as he has shown his capabilities/ability as well.

Filipe Luis is better but you'd expect that considering the experience and how much older he is... infact before last season where he was actually phenominal by all accounts... I didn't really rate him that highly.

I personally would of kept Cole and brought in Shaw to kind of guide him in... kind of like what United are doing if they get him by keeping Evra.

Of course we're talking about Mourinho here who never really seems to favour that kind of approach anyway.

Shaw had a good season but it was largely hyped up by the media as well. Azpilicueta was better than him despite playing out of position. Yet Shaw was picked into the team of the season for whatever strange reason. At the end of the day though ... You are paying 30m and 100k p/w wages to Shaw for the player that he can potentially become, not the player he is now. Because he definitely isn't worth anywhere near that at the moment. To put things into perspective, 30m would make him the most expensive full-back of all time and his wages will only increase

I am 100% sure Chelsea would have gone for Shaw had it not been for the wages. They have been monitoring him for the longest time. They actually felt he was the perfect replacement for Ashley Cole

But I think what Chelsea have eventually done is much better. Let Cole go which frees up a lot of wages. Bring in an excellent full-back in Luis for 20m and half Cole's wages. Wait for a few more years and see what new talent pops up in the market instead of grossly overpaying for Shaw

Not to mention he was nowhere near full fitness. Now he will have enough time to fully rest over the summer aand hopefully fire on all cylinders for us when the season begins

Probably not their biggest problem, but not so insignificant either. Its not like they had much trouble penetrating Chile's defense, if they had a proper finsiher that works well within their system, the game could have easily swing their way.

True. But then again, if they'd had a defence that knew what tackling was they wouldn't need that finisher. The entire campaign has been a shambles, and quite amusing.

Even in past tournaments their defense would often allow some uneccesary chances to opponents. Having unmovable wall...I mean Casillas...really held them together as a team. Day after day, month after month, he would save almost all the half chances as well as most of those that seemed impossible to miss. It took huge drop in his form to really expose weaknesses in their defense.

I can't believe I've been fooled into thinking Pique is actually world class defender. When I watch him now I can't help but think of Chewbacca.

I blame Shakira.

Some drama with Fabregas in Spain's camp. Del Bosque booted him out of training session. Looks like you lot bought yourself a primadonna.

Lukaku should be first choice imo, general play is absolutely fantastic

Lukaku has been very dissapionting this WC imo.

He's been about as I expected honestly. Most of the people who watch him regularly will tell you he is a relatively limited player at the moment, and one that needs a lot of work. It's why all these calls for him to be the Chelsea no.1 are absurd. The lad isn't Drogba.

Really? His touch is still poor, his passing is sloppy and he is struggling vs teams that don't give him space. Don't get me wrong, I think he will keep getting better and better, but he isn't anywhere near good enough to be our no.1 striker at the moment.
