The " I have a small question" thread FM13

I've been a mid table team for 3 seasons now (Ligue 1) and I just cant break my team of their nack to just draw or lose close games. If I win its usually by 2 or more goals but I'm constantly drawing 0-0 or 1-1. I had the least goals conceded last season and I'm still doing well in defense this season... my main problem is, no matter how I tweak or change my tactics I just can't get any offense. I play a 4-1-2-2-1 fluid and standard (I tweaked a tactic I found here) and a 4-2-3-1 fluid and attacking. I either have tons of long shots (something switching to fluid has cut down on) or just no chances at all. Literally I'll end an average game with 5 shots on goal with 1 on target it, and no chances created. I have good players (many young internationals and high PA players) and I have only added 1 player this season into my starting 11. One thing that I'm not sure about is that my RB and RAM don't like each other and whether or not that's having a big affect on my success.

Attached are my two tactics, anyone have any advice?

edit*some grammar

I have Kevin Mirallas in season 1 with everton. He has 'runs with ball down right' 'cuts inside' and 'moves into channels' as his PPM's. Is is worth untraining any of these as surely he has too many movements and could be confusing

Short answer is yes.

Check this link which details best PPMs for each role http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/foot...commended-player-preferred-move-position.html

Also make sure any individual player instructions you may have set will compliment the PPMs, not contradict them. For example, you don't want an Inside Forward being instructed to hug the byline if he has a PPM of cuts inside.

Some matches, although my defence line is all up, all the team sets deeper (I always check the post-game analysis) without any explanation, regardless I play attacking, control or any other strategy. And every time it sets deeper, I loose a lot of possession. Any ideas? Possible bug ???

There's a rival who also plays, and if your players keeps losing possession, then it means your rival will attack more, and in attacking will push your team back.

There's some possible problems that may be causing the loss of the ball:

- The players are set to a too direct play and are trying hopeful long passes that get where no teammate can reach.

- Not hopeful passes, but maybe they're looking to give it to the striker (or some other attacking player) and he's isolated, so he can't hold to the ball against the defenders but has no clear pass option and losses to a tackle (or shoots prematurely).

- By team width or some individual instructions some players flock to the same area, so it becomes congested. Receiving the ball and controlling it without giving it up is too hard, or the player sees no clear lines of passes and dribbling isn't an option with good chances to succeed either.

- One of your players is being targeted by the opposition's pressure and has been told to hold up the ball, so he tries when he just can't hold to it.

- Your rival is placing more men in the midfield so their free man can keep a constant pressure on the ball and your players aren't doing what they need to offset that.

Try to pay attention to some of those possibilities and then try to react accordingly. Reduce forward runs or increase them, tell a player or two to play wider or narrower, drop a player one line behind, remove hold up ball instruction, increase or decrease tempo or passing style, etc.

Nice tips thank you :-) But as I said this situation happens no matter what strategy and instructions I have used. There is always some few games that my team, at the start and during the match sets deeper and when it happens my team looses possesion (usually I have more than 60% and it falls to 35%) and no matter the opposition is stronger or weaker than my team.

For now I am playing Contain and Fluid with the defense line all up, all players are pressing and closing down, mentalities were set in order to push team to opponent half. I am getting possession values around 70%, nice amount of shots (20), no long range shots, well I am really controling the match. Suddenly against Man Utd (I'm training FC Porto) the team sets deeper and I'm getting a beat.

It doesn't need to be only against bigger or smaller teams. Some may do by quality, others by formation or other ways. It's a matter of see how the players lose the ball in each case. And then know that for ManU matches you have to change like this and against União de Madeira (random weak Portuguese team coming to my mind) like that. ManU would have players more adept at interceptions and if your players close down everywhere, the first pass wouldn't have too many lone players to aim to. In weaker opposition it may be that with such high mentality the ball is moved forward too quick into areas packed with defenders before movement has created anything. A pinch of complacency?. If you get one match against a weaker team you expect to be one of these, try being harder in the team talk.

Forgot to mention that I use also low tempo or normal (when using normal the first notch above low).
I have this idea that Contain strategy with fluid style would be the best to play like Barcelona, taking in consideration the description in FM tactic creator about Contain strategy. Although it would set the team very deep in the pitch, this would be compensated with a high defence line, pressing and some changes in player's mentality. The basic idea, again assuming the description provided in tactic creator about Contain, is to reduce spaces and retain possession but with the high defence line and the pressing this would set players to retain possession in opponent's half field.

Is this ideia accurate ?

hi, i have a silly question... if i started my game since last year(13.1.1), but i used tactics that created for latest patch(13.3.2), will it work?
i mean the ME for my save game will follow which version of patch? (note that currently my version is 13.3.2-latest)

I think is a good idea. My teams have always got closer to the tiki-taka when playing defensively, so basically your approach to replicate it goes along the lines I would follow to try replicate it myself. It is right? That's for experience to say, your results seem to point it is, but needs some tweaking when facing certain teams to keep working the way it's desired.

If your ME will be patched, so it will go with the latest patch you've installed. The thing you keep from 13.1.1 are the database stuff. All that's ME or operations made by the game belong to the patch it has installed. In your case: you play with the players, teams, squads and league rules from the database you began with in 13.1.1 (13.0.0) but the ME, processing, GUI tweaks to resolve bugs and such are those of 13.3.2.

Indeed ! I have set a Contain / Fluid tactic, push my defense line all up, Tempo Normal (1 position right above Low) and Width Normal (1 position above narrow), Time Wasting rarely ( almost 0 ), Pressing very high, zonar marking and closing down. This is the starting point :-) Now, mentality and CF must be tweaked: I was setting defenders with a higher mentality (attacking), defensive midfielder and deep-lying playmaker and also advanced playmaker with lower (normal / attacking) and inside forwards and deep-lying forward even lower. This would set the team more compact, I was great with possession levels (more 65%), good amount of shots (15-20), no long range shots, no fouls (tacking normal or less), great amount of interceptions (30). Suddenly I played a match away with ManUtd and it all comes down, it was terrible, my team retreat in the pitch, loose possession and I was beaten hard.

I believe the problem could be with player mentalities.

Oh and it's all about passing and movement, so I had also set players to roam from position... all of them :-) CB's move into channels to cover WB's, only defensive midfielder stood in position, midfielders moving into channels, inside forwards to cut inside and also deep-lying forward move into channels.

Hi miguel I really gave up for possession tactic it is so axhaustin..I get a formation and a tactic that works great..and after two or three games it just crushes and my team gets 4-0 or even 6-0 every game against every team it's getting me crazy..so I went into the normal type of gaming..just putting the best formation for every team and set my own philosophy..and it works really good..
I just wanted to know how it goes for you..??

Just a quick question really... (Well, a few actually)

Is it useful to play both a DLP and a DLF?

I have a really good dlp and a decent dlf, good pacey wingers and a fast, agile advanced forward/poacher.

I want to play direct, attacking football but i'm concerned that playing both a dlp and dlf will hinder attacking plays?

However, if this isn't the case, and it's not ill-advised, should i make them both my player maker and target man respectively.

Thanks for any help. just getting back into this game (actually, it's 12) and would like to know this before i start.

Well, the only problem as I wrote is when my team sets further back. If they pressure high the possession is awesome... ok, matches are a little bored because players keep passing the ball :-) but I have plenty of shots on target, my midfielders control the match and they have the most amount of passes. I just have to figure a way for my team maintain the high pressure.

There are several (do a search at the forum), but right now we are trying to develop one based on Contain strategy

There seems to be a problem with my ***. Manager. I gave him the duty to do pep talks and he does fine until the end of the game pep talk. Whenever I win he ALWAYS gives the "I don't have anything specific to say" pep talk and it frustrates me because I know my team can use some praise when they get wins.

Usually they do that. I have always believed it's a mistake to let ***.managers to do the lecturing and training. Do it yourself, a little more work but it pays off. You know the sentence "when you need something well done, do it yourself" :-)

You can untick the option, then use the button to say what he suggests and do your own praising at the end.

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything... what determines the # of youth candidates you get? and how might one increase that number?

Scenario is this, doing the san marino challenge. Earlier I used to get like 10-15 candidates, most were bad. Now I only get 6 or so. I'm trying to figure out how to increase that number as well, I need to fill out a national team.
