Cheers buddy... hope there's enough detail in there for everyone - if people like it then I'll do one at the end of the season too.

Yeah I think that would be good to have an end of season summary etc. Keep up the great work. 8-|

Eredivisie Matchday 18 | Kyocera Stadion
Wednesday 8th January 2014

ADO Den Haag 0-2 Ajax
(Jali, Poulsen)

MOTM: Poulsen

A good all-round display from the team as we put in a quality performance to ensure all three points. This was Christian Poulsen's last game for us and I can only thank him for the contribution he's made through his performances and his presence at the club as a whole. He'll be greatly missed but hopefully the younger lads can step up and take his place. Andile Jali, one of Poulsen's potential replacements, got himself on the scoresheet on his debut, too!

Eredivisie Matchday 19 | Amsterdam Arena
Wednesday 22nd January 2014

Ajax 3-0 AZ Alkmaar
(Ligeon, de Jong, Bojan)

MOTM: Ligeon

Probably one of our best displays this season - we were so dominant. Every single member of the team looked comfortable on the ball and we sliced through the opposition defence with ease. Siem de Jong proved to be vital as he scored one and got the other two assists - another fine individual display. The only damp mark on today's game was a slight knock Lerin Duarte picked up towards the end of the game.

Eredivisie Matchday 20 | Galgenwaard
Saturday 25th January 2014

FC Utrecht 1-2 Ajax
(Sigporsson x2)

MOTM: Sigporsson

A slightly lower-level performance from the lads but we still took all three points with us. I guess it's a tough place to go; overall I'm happy with the way we ground out the win. I'll be sure to work the players a little more in training but aside from that this game shouldn't be too much of an issue.

KNVB Quarter Final | Trendwork Arena
Wednesday 29th January 2014

Fortuna Sittard 0-1 Ajax
(Sigporsson)

MOTM: Vets

This is probably the first game this season I'm totally unhappy about. We may have progressed but the performance today was horrific. Passes were misplaced, we didn't close down half as much as what we needed too and we looked uninterested in creating chances. All of the players who started today were given a chance ahead of the usual starting eleven because they'd proven to me in training they could handle it - however, they've went straight back to square one in my opinion after that horror show. Luckily our opposition couldn't capitalise and talisman Sigporsson came off the bench to help us progress.

Managers Opinion

Looking in hindsight, it's been a good month. We've won all the games we've played - including a win which gives us progression in the KNVB. However I'm not happy with the level of performances against Utrecht and Fortuna Sittard - against Utrecht, I sensed the level of display falling but thought we could improve by the next game. However, against Fortuna Sittard, the performance only got worse. Passes were misplaced and we lacked in intelligence on the field. It's something I'm massively disappointed about and something we'll have to work on in training - the attitude of some players needs to drastically improve within the next month before they find themselves out of the squad.

Eredivisie Matchday 21 | Amsterdam Arena
Sunday 2nd February 2014

Ajax 3-0 Heracles
(Sigporsson, Ligeon, Blind)

MOTM: Duarte

A much better display after the disappointment of the last two games. We weren't playing the strongest team in the world but we can't afford to become complacent and we dominated possession across the field. Three of our star men for the season got on the score sheet to ensure victory and pick up another vital three points in the hunt for the Eredivisie title.

Eredivisie Matchday 22 | Amsterdam Arena
Saturday 8th February 2014

Ajax 4-1 NEC
(de Jong, Bojan, Ligeon, OG)

MOTM: Duarte

Again, we completely dominated the opposition - in no small part to Lerin Duarte's second excellent performance in a row. The Dutch winger has been fantastic this season - consistently causing teams a problem down that wing and he got another two assists today as we looked comfortable on and off the ball.

Eredivisie Matchday 23 | Grolsche Veste
Wednesday 12th February 2014

FC Twente 0-1 Ajax
(Duarte)

MOTM: Duarte

I can't ignore the fact that Lerin Duarte has got Man of the Match for the third successive game - he's on an absolutely storming run at the minute and got the goal he deserved today. An excellent individual performance from the young lad today as the whole team contributed with solid performances.

Eredivisie Matchday 24 | Amsterdam Arena
Sunday 16th February 2014

Ajax 4-0 SC Cambuur
(van der Hoorn, Bojan, de Jong, Sigporsson)

MOTM: Duarte

Duarte put another fantastic performance in today - is there any stopping this kid? I feel harsh on the rest of the squad to not give it to them because everybody played their part; but Duarte was the difference today and provided another 3 excellent assists. Surely he has to be considered for the Holland World Cup Finals squad?

Eredivisie Matchday 25 | Amsterdam Arena
Friday 21st February 2014

Ajax 2-1 Feyenoord
(de Jong, Sigporsson)

MOTM: Sigporsson

A solid win today against our main domestic rivals. We drew with them at their place earlier in the season and then to secure a victory here today is great for our club and fans; we've given our great support the bragging rights for the immediate future. Hopefully the fans can go and celebrate in a safe manner - next up we have Shakhtar in Europe.

UEFA Champions League First Knockout Round First Leg | Amsterdam Arena
Wednesday 26th February 2014

Ajax 3-1 Shakhtar Donetsk
(Milosevic, Sigporsson x2)

MOTM: Sigporsson

A fantastic display which gives us the advantage in the tie. The only negative about tonight's result is the manner in which we conceded - with the game already secured and us cruising; we maybe got a little sloppy and gifted our opposition a potentially important away goal in the 87th minute. Only time will tell the importance of that goal, but I - and my defenders - are hoping it won't matter too much. Going to Ukraine is definitely going to be tough for us now.

Managers Opinion

This has probably been one of our best months yet, if not the best. We've won all five games - putting some good sides to the sword. It isn't just the results which have impressed me, however, as the performances which have gone with them have been excellent. At the end of January I was a little weary because performances were beginning to worsen as our grip on games loosened. However, we worked the players hard in training and they've reacted tremendously - all credit to them. We got an important result against Shakhtar at the end of the month there and I'm hoping that can propel us through to the quarter finals.

Eredivisie Matchday 26 | IJsseldelta Stadion
Sunday 2nd March 2014

Zwolle 0-3 Ajax
(Bojan, Ligeon, de Jong)

MOTM: de Jong

The improved performances continue on into March as our coaching team seem to have well and truly kicked the complacency out of the team. An outstanding display considering we'd played in Europe just days before and still went on to win with pace and lots of energy. I'm very pleased with the team at the moment.

Eredivisie Matchday 27 | Abe Lenstra Stadion
Saturday 8th March 2014

sc Heerenveen 0-2 Ajax
(Duarte, Bojan)

MOTM: Ligeon

Another dominant display from the team as they swept aside a strong Heerenveen side. Despite Duarte and Bojan getting the goals, right midfielder Ligeon was very impressive getting both assists and proving to be a force down that side of the pitch. We head into the next game against FC Groningen knowing if we pick up all three points then we're Eredivisie champions.

Eredivisie Matchday 28 | Euroborg
Friday 14th March 2014

FC Groningen 0-2 Ajax
(de Jong, OG)

MOTM: Boilesen

In a match where we didn't particularly play well, we sealed the title. Maybe today's more of a sign that title winning sides don't always dominate - and those that play poorly and still win are truly great teams. Whatever peoples opinions are, nobody can deny we've deserved this title and it's our fourth successive championship. Having secured the league title, we're now able to focus solely on Europe and put our efforts into getting past Shakhtar!

UEFA Champions League First Knockout Round Second Leg | Donbas-Arena
Tuesday 18th March 2014

Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Ajax
(Serero)

MOTM: Chygrynskyi

A battling performance from ourselves ensured our progression into the quarter finals of the Champions League. We weren't at our best today, but as in the last game at Groningen, we picked up the result we needed thanks to an important goal from Serero which cancelled out their previous away goal.

Eredivisie Matchday 29 | Amsterdam Arena
Saturday 22nd March 2014

Ajax 2-0 RKC Waalwijk
(Veltman, Sigporsson)

MOTM: Veltman

Today may have had no real importance to us but I wanted the lads to go out there and still get a victory. If we can continue on with this form, we may just end up breaking the highest ever points tally in the Eredivisie and also going a whole season without domestically losing!

KNVB Semi Final | Amsterdam Arena
Tuesday 25th March 2014

Ajax 2-1 FC Utrecht
(van der Hoorn x2)

MOTM: van der Hoorn

Both of our goals today came from corners but that doesn't really show our dominant we were. From the first whistle to the last, we were comfortable in possession and we were much the better side. Unfortunately, as well as scoring two for us, Mike van der Hoorn also conceded an own goal which makes the result look closer than the game ever was.

Eredivisie Matchday 30 | Amsterdam Arena
Saturday 29th March 2014

Ajax 4-0 Vitesse
(Enoh, Bojan, Sigporsson, OG)

MOTM: Serero

I was very surprised today to see how easily we dominated Vitesse. They were on form before their arrival at the Amsterdam Arena and looked as though they were making a late surge up the table but we may have just put an end to their European hopes as we completely dominated today.

Managers Opinion

We did what we needed to this month - securing the Eredivisie title with ease as well as progressing in both the Champions League and the KNVB. It's been more of a filler month rather than anything else as we've just sort of ticked on and kept the ball moving. Next month, the season will largely be wrapped up as we have only have the PSV game and any European games we qualify for coming after April. We're definitely looking promising on all fronts and I can only hope we keep this up!

UEFA Champions League Quarter Final First Leg | Stade Velodrome
Tuesday 1st April 2014

Marseille 0-2 Ajax
(de Jong x2)

MOTM: van Rhijn

An outstanding performance puts one foot into the semi finals for us. We battled for the 90 minutes and deservedly won the game - Marseille were surprisingly disappointing and we took full advantage of that with two Siem de Jong goals. Right back Ricardo van Rhijn gained man of the match for marshalling the defence all night whilst striker Kolbeinn Sigporsson also played a key role - holding the ball up night to give midfielders like de Jong time to advance.

Eredivisie Matchday 31 | Rat Verlegh Stadion
Friday 4th April 2014

NAC Breda 1-1 Ajax
(Ligeon)

MOTM: Lurling

We really struggled today due to the trip back from Southern France but we gained a point which is better than losing. Most importantly, we kept up our unbeaten league run which will hopefully give the lads a boost for the second leg against Marseille in midweek.

UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Second Leg | Amsterdam Arena
Wednesday 9th April 2014

Ajax 2-0 Marseille
(Duarte, van der Hoorn)

MOTM: Duarte

Another phenomenal display from the team as we repeated the result from the first leg. Winning 4-0 on aggregate in the quarter finals of the Champions League is extraordinary and, again, the result was built on a solid defence starting with goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer. We've already surpassed our expectations in the competition and we're now in the last four - the other three teams are Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona so we're guaranteed a tough game whoever we're drawn with.

Eredivisie Matchday 32 | Amsterdam Arena
Saturday 12th April 2014

Ajax 5-1 Roda JC
(Denswil x2, Sigporsson x2, OG)

MOTM: Denswil

Progressing in the Champions League has given the team massive confidence and we've absolutely demolished Roda today - surpassing the previous record for the highest number of points in one season. It's been an amazing season for myself and the club; now we just need to make sure we remain unbeaten in the league and win the KNVB whilst giving our all in the Champions League.

Eredivisie Matchday 33 | De Adelaarschorst
Sunday 20th April 2014

GA Eagles 0-2 Ajax
(Enoh, Sigporsson)

MOTM: Enoh

The team were excited following the Champions League draw and they kept the opposition under control in this game. We kept on our winning run in the league and next up we travel to the Nou Camp for the Champions League semi final. It's important we stay grounded, go there and put up a good fight and hopefully we'll give ourselves a chance for the home game. The boys have been working so hard in training!

UEFA Champions League Semi Final First Leg | Nou Camp
Wednesday 23rd April 2014

FC Barcelona 2-3 Ajax
(Duarte, de Jong, Sigporsson)

MOTM: de Jong

What an outstanding performance! The result could have gone either way because the game was fairly equal - I think we were excellent to not allow Barcelona to dominate on their own patch like they usually we would. Everything about the team worked tonight... we pushed the opposition at the right times, held the ball for long spells and our passing was top class. We've got three important away goals so hopefully we can go back to the Amsterdam Arena in 6 days' time and get a result. We've got a massive chance to make the Champions League final but we're not their yet - Barcelona are still one of the best teams in the world and have the potential to demolish any side on their day.

KNVB Final | De Kuip
Sunday 27th April 2014

Ajax 5-2 SC Cambuur
(van der Hoorn x2, Veltman, Duarte, Sigporsson)

MOTM: van der Hoorn

Another amazing display - a fantastic game for ourselves and the neutrals. I have to give respect to Cambuur because they went at us from the first minute but we managed to get the important goals and get a historic victory. If there ever was an official advert for football - this would be it. A fascinating game; both teams played well and in the end we came out 5-2 victors.

UEFA Champions League Semi Final Second Leg | Amsterdam Arena
Tuesday 29th April 2014

Ajax 0-3 FC Barcelona

MOTM: Xavi

To lose 5-3 on aggregate is heart breaking. We put in another excellent display and I can't fault the lads' effort and ability; unfortunately Barcelona just showed their amazing ability and nicked it. They scored in the 86th and 88th minute to put themselves in the final - if we hadn't let them score those two goals then we'd have their place. It really is heart breaking. But overall it's been an amazing journey - we've beaten some excellent teams and then lost to arguably the best in the world. I wish Barcelona all the best going on into the final against Manchester United - I'm sure they'll do well. I just want to thank the fans, the players and the board for getting us here. It's been an excellent run and something which will live on in history - unfortunately we couldn't finish the run on a positive note.

Eredivisie Matchday 34 | Amsterdam Arena
Sunday 4th May 2014

Ajax 4-1 PSV
(Veltman, Duarte, de Jong)

MOTM: Duarte

The curtain falls on another amazing Eredivisie season as we finish champions by an excellent 24 points. We've smashed the previous record for the highest amount of points recorded and ended the season on a high note with an outstanding 4-1 victory over rivals PSV. Overall it's been a really positive season - we've won three trophies of the four we entered and reached the semi final of the Champions League

Managers Opinion

It's been a season of absolute joy for me and the staff - there's no other way to describe it. To consolidate our position as the best team in Holland by winning all three domestic trophies was absolutely astonishing. Reaching the Champions League semi final wasn't dreamed of at the beginning of the season and we were knocked out due to that three minute spell - it was absolutely heart breaking but it's a good foundation for the squad to build on next year. We've smashed many records this season and I can't thank the team enough for their contribution - they've bought into the systems and philosophies we've employed and their attitude has been top class. An outstanding overall performance.

We still played so well! Overall I expected to get battered about 7-0 on aggregate so I think reaching the semi's was still very respectable for a club like Ajax!:P

With the way you've steam rolled teams, even the reigning champions Bayern, I think you're downplaying your team. They were fantastic. I play in a different manner in FM, playing for draws, grinding out results the ugly way if needed to. My home is my fortress though, I dominate and terrorize every visiting team. Haven't lost or even drawn single game at home in two straight seasons! Somewhat similar to Mourinho, eh? xD

I'm not downplaying my team; I just looked at the Barcelona line-up and it was mouth watering compared to our decent starting eleven haha. Sigporsson wasn't playing as well either - so that was a bit of concern. See, I hate just grinding out results haha I'd much prefer to see my team play attractive football:P Of course results matter more than anything but I wouldn't just want to put 10/11 men behind the ball and play that way!

I manage my own team (Chelsea) less than I manage lower level teams, so I've to grind out results against big guns to survive. Putting 10/11 men behind the ball is not the way to play but playing solid defensively hitting effectively on the break is, for me TBH. And Barca/RM's players are really over-rated in the game.

Well done on the league, unlucky in Europe but you did well to get to the semi final. Sorry if you already answered this question, but what tactic are you using?

Cheers for your comment - what specifically would you want to see about the tactical side of things? Some explanation behind the way I've had the team playing and how I react to specific situations (like the Barcelona game, or Bayern game) or something else? Let me know with suggestions, happy to post whatever you guys want if it's viable in an update of my style!:)

I would like to know more about your tactic basis, it's pretty solid with very low conceding but you also say that you like to play attractive football, it's a pressure based system? And against Barcelona and Bayer have you changed anything? Transfers policy? I think that with a team like Ajax with so many talented youngsters it will be great to develop your own players, but what's your thoughs about that? And i would like that end of season summary, with your top performers, your preferred eleven and that stuff. I played with Ajax too a few seasons, so it's a little more interesting to see the differences.

Summer Break
Season Review

View attachment 440426

Managers Opinion

Overall, it's been a fantastic season - better than myself or anybody at the club could have imagined at the beginning of the season. Domestically, we've dominated and we really did well in Europe. Some of the top teams on the continent came up against us and seriously struggled so it's been a huge year in terms of progression for us. Last summer, I signed a new deal because although I'd had several enticing job offers, I didn't think we were finished here. When I joined, everybody was in agreement that it was a long-term project and maybe we've outdone our own expectations this year; our project may have just jumped forward a year or two and that's left me in a difficult personal position. I said I'd stay until we achieved certain goals, and we've achieved those and then went further this season. Whether I stay this summer or move on is something myself and the board need to have a serious chat about - I love the club but I'm an ambitious man and have always dreamt of managing in some of the best leagues in the world.

I don't think my personal goals should cloud such a good season for the club though because I can't praise everybody enough. From the boardroom to the stands, everybody has been excellent. This year I really struck a bond with the first team and I think the close relationships within the team showed on the pitch as we were behind one another all the way. The teams attitude has been top class and I don't think I could complain about anything for the whole season aside from the manner we lost in the UEFA Champions League Semi Final. From the bottom of my heart, I'd like to thank everybody related to Ajax Football Club - and that stands whether I stay or go. It's been a fantastic year, I'm elated.

Starting Eleven and Tactics

Over the course of the season, myself and the staff have often experimented with the team and brought in some younger lads to have their chance. We've been criticised by several 'experts' for lacking consistency, but we've largely kept the core of the team in tact and changed one or two positions a game to avoid complacency amongst the more experienced lads. Despite playing with the same philosophy in every single game, we did tend to choose a more defensive or attacking side depending on our opponents. For example, during the journey to the Nou Camp to face Barcelona; we fielded a more defensive side whilst for home games against the likes of RKC, who we knew conceded a lot of goals, we names a slightly more attacking side to take advantage of their weaknesses. Below are the two teams we used as the basis, with the defensive on the left and the attacking on the right:

View attachment 440412

Key Positions in the Team

As already mentioned, we played with the same philosophy and tactic in all of our games - simply changing the starting eleven depending on who we were playing. These were the vital roles to our play.

Right back: Ricardo van Rhijn, the first choice right back, excelled in this role. He was asked to push forward whenever possible and offer an option to the right midfielder by overlapping; or more typically underlapping. An unconventional method nowadays; van Rhijn often confused opposition defenders with his unpredictability as he was comfortable both cutting in and going around the outside.

Left back: The main role for this player, aside from his defensive duties, was to run into the space left by the left midfielder (who's role we'll come onto in a second.) Blind was the better player at influencing the game in an attacking sense because of his blistering pace and great eye for a cross. Boilesen, on the other hand, offered more defensive protection whilst still managing to get over the half way line on a decent enough basis.

Defensive midfielder: Both Blind and Onazi were great in this role - although when we were more attack minded, Onazi took up the role because Blind was perfect to deploy at left back. The main defensive duty of this player was to simply win the ball back; whilst when the rest of the team attacked, this player sat back. Often used when the full backs bombed forward, this guy would sit between the two centre backs and offer additional support.

Right midfielder: We employed the right midfielder as an out-and-out winger. His main job was to attack the opponents and join up with the lone striker. He was able to get to the by-line and cross or come a little infield and either use the overlapping van Rhijn or cross from deep.

Right central midfielder: Whether it was Jali or Onazi who played here, they both had a very important role within the team. On the attack, this player would sit a little deeper than the rest of the attacking players and look to mop up anything which was cleared; the team also looked to this lad to be able to comfortably spray the ball around and pick out a defence-splitting pass. Whilst defending, this guy would often drop deeper to make it as though we were playing with two defensive midfielders - winning the ball back and then distributing was key for this lad.

Left central midfielder: This guy was the runner from midfield - the one who went beyond the striker; confusing oppositions midfielders and defenders alike with his bursting runs. Siem de Jong proved extremely influential in this role because he'd previously played as both a striker and a midfielder. He has the perfect eye for a pass and knows how to perfectly time his run - Andile Jali, on the other hand, was great in this role although a little more defensive. He still got forward as much as de Jong, but he also had more defensive responsibility - luckily he's one **** of a machine and can bomb up and down the pitch for 90 minutes without trouble.

Left midfielder: The only guy fully competent in this role was Lerin Duarte who had an absolutely fantastic season. He had complete freedom - he was able to cut in field (leaving space for the attacking left back) or sit as high up the pitch as he wanted - often seen as a second striker (again, allowing the left back to move forward into the traditional left midfield role.) Duarte had massive success in this role - scoring 9 goals and assisting another 23; eventually leading to him getting into the Holland World Cup Finals squad.

Striker: We decided to employ strikers in a role which demanded high concentration levels at all times; luckily both Bojan and Sigporsson were happy to play here. The lone striker often dropped deep, either to receive the ball and then play it out wide; or make a space for one of the on-rushing midfielders (RM, LCM, LM) before arriving into the box late to finish. Both players were extremely suited in this role; Sigporsson grabbed more goals purely because he played here more often.
