Well..

The club finished with more points the season after RVP left, considering Suarez isn't the only target this year I'm confident the side can perform. It seems it really isn't about Suarez any more, a lot of fans on forums including yourself say "he won't make Arsenal challenge", and they claim the Liverpool side is better without him. I don't like the guy, but he would be an improvement in pure footballing terms for most sides and is capable of producing something from nothing.

Really, at the heart of it, it's about what selling to Arsenal would mean in the way Pool fans see their club. To be in that 'middle pack' of clubs fighting for Europa spots instead of the CL is shocking for many. The idea of 'challenging for top four' is exactly what Rodgers knows the fans want to hear, so he wheels it out again and again, but the fact of it is your average league position across the last four seasons has been 7th and this season it's more likely you'll be focusing on a Europa League spot at best. Lastly, if this is the period where Arsenal have been weakest for years and are to be mocked for not winning anything, why can't Liverpool finish above them? You've spent more than Man Utd over the past decade, after all.

Arsenal have maintained 16 consecutive years of CL qualification, despite during the last decade the club having a net spend 19th highest in the league... out of 20 teams. Now that the club actually has some money to throw around and Fergie has gone, there's a good reason for optimism. This is the same side that on its day rocked Milan and Barcelona - it just needs to develop consistency and a lethal touch in front of goal to stop giving sides a reason to stay in the game, and it's only the beginning of a new stage of the project.

Additionally the club has maintained incredibly good worldwide supporter numbers, and frankly whilst winning cups and leagues would have be nice, the fact that these numbers have increased exponentially despite not winning things shows the attraction of the side and the strength of the club and the decision to build up the club instead of put that money into players on the pitch. The glory supporters are happier supporting Utd, Chelsea and City at the moment, it seems, and I for one would be happier with them there. For once a summer is going by and it doesn't appear the club is selling their best players, have an experienced manager, and are looking at multiple targets whilst the first XI itself has improved. The eight years comment has been rolled out again and again, but it is losing its sting now that the club is coming to an end of this miserly period and actually seems to be moving forward.

Arsenal mounting a title challenge is a more bigger joke than suarez has made himself right now.Arsenal has not won anything i may add for last 8 years.Arsenal are in champions league but are they gonna go far. ? You know the answer yourself if not check the record to know it.And liverpool are stupid if they wanna compete for europa league. It is proven point getting into europa league is a bigger disaster than actually not having it.
Arsenal may not have won anything for 8 years but they've consistently finished top four every season those 8 years, whether they have won anything in the last 8 years or not Suarez clearly see's it more of an opportunity to win something than he has got at Liverpool currently. If Liverpool aren't looking for Europa League then what are you aiming for? A top four finish would be extremely tough and Suarez can see that aswell, as surely can yourself - I do agree though on Europa League though

Fact is liverpool bite themselves in the **** when they brought carroll and all the trash for 80 mil.The club under rodgers has brought quality players .His jan signings have proved right and have impressed.Liverpool have invested heavily yet properly this window also.If they can get proper backup for lb and lucas they do have a strong squad.Arsenal whereas have cleared their deadwood but not brought anything till now.Rodgers can see that if his 11 cant beat arsenal his whole squad 25 can do it.Hence his stand of blocking suarez move is right because if he selld suarez he basically screws the club chances of making the top 4.I know he is waiting for a madrid bid if not arsenal can bid what he wants on transfer deadline day :P.I am manchester united fan since 1999 so if liverpool get relegated i care less (H).

Agreed, the players that have been brought to Anfield previous to Rodgers being in charged were pretty much all awful if we are honest, bar Suarez and maybe a few others. Carroll was an unbelievable flop and they'd be lucky to recoup even a quarter of what they bought him for now. Rodgers is doing a good job in my opinion with what he's got but I think Liverpool will fail to reach the top four without doubt this year its just so unlikely that they could pull it off if you look at the quality of teams challenging.

Yeah rodgers is definitely hoping for a Madrid bid if anything, like you said Liverpool would be shooting themselves in the foot selling to Arsenal - but I still think it will happen

A lot of comments questioning as to whether Arsenal really is a 'step up'? Arsenal are playing Champions League football next season, Liverpool aren't in Europe for a start - Arsenal are most certainly more likely to be much more successful this season than Liverpool will be, and may I add I believe that is with or without Suarez at the Emirates. Of course it's a step up for Suarez, I agree a few years ago it wouldn't have been but now it most certainly is - Liverpool are fighting for Europa League this season and Arsenal are looking to mount a title challenge - in my eyes there is a big gap.

Everyone agrees its a step up.. but will it be big enough to satisfy Suarez?

Arsenal will not be mounting a title challenge unless they sign another 2 or 3 players after Suarez... Yes they constantly qualify for the Champions League ( which is the step up ) but they dont win anything and without spending that wont change anytime soon

Like i said it is a step up, if he wants to join them that's fair enough, but they have to agree a fee with Liverpool before anything can happen

Apart from all the talk about Suarez saying Madrid would be hard to turn down, did they ever show any interest in him? From what I read they were not interested at all, it was just few casual words from Suarez that made the link and apart from that nothing.

Spanish newspapers and journalists all reported the interest in Suarez, but Bale was the first choice...

They were put off by Suarez due to his controversial season and how that would impact them being able to publicise the player... but he is still the back up apparently

I actually think Suarez would be a better signing for Madrid than Bale would, Madrid need a striker more than an attacking midfielder currently but Bale is the big name at the moment

Arsenal are certainly making strides towards making a title challenge however. You must remember Arsenal have been growing something for the past what 5 years with the youth, players like Wilshere and Ramsey seem to finally be blooming, and Walcott is finding his touch in the goalscoring department etc - things are starting to click for Arsenal a lot more now. Of course I agree I find it highly unlikely they will win the title this year, but I honestly do think they will give it a decent challenge, a lot of people will disagree however.

But of course they do need to strengthen still nobody can deny that mate but they've made a lot more intent this season and they haven't sold any big players which is encouraging for the club

I do hope Suarez goes to Madrid though, it paves the way for hopefully some class from abroad to come to the Premier League, whether it's to Arsenal or to Liverpool, I'm sure we will see atleast one big move from each of them this summer whether it's in or out's

New Suarez interview:

Exerpt from his latest interview and a 'breakingnews' article:

“I’m still defending the Liverpool shirt and I will do so until the last minute,” Suarez, who was left at home for last night’s friendly against Valerenga in Norway because of injury and is unlikely to feature against Celtic in Dublin on Saturday, told Spanish newspaper Marca.

“My aim is to reach an agreement with the club in a friendly manner and I hope the clause we agreed a year ago is fulfilled. Up to now, it hasn’t been."

“It’s not that I want to or am desperate to leave, but I like things to be clear and a year ago I made my position to the club clear.

“Gerrard has a lot of history with Liverpool and his words are very important but everyone should understand that I need to play the Champions League to keep growing as a footballer.

“Now I have the chance, I want to take it.

“A Champions League team (Arsenal) is making a big effort to get me and one always wants to be where they feel comfortable.

“There were a lot of rumours (about Real) that were different to reality: Madrid never called me personally or Liverpool to try and negotiate.

“Every player aspires to reach the top and Real Madrid is among the most important clubs in the world. It would be very difficult to say no to Real Madrid.”

Not his biggest fan, but Coentrao would be the perfect type of full back we need. Left sided, and attacking like mad.

I think we can all agree that Suarez has only himself to blame at this point. He ****** himself over with all the crazy stunts and that scared all the top clubs where marketing is just as important as pure footballing quality.

And selling him to Arsenal, direct rival for CL spot, is an impossible decision. ;/

Seems a desperate plea from Suarez talking to Marcia about a dream move to Real Madrid... Maybe he knows a transfer to Arsenal will be very hard

Its similar to Rooney at United.. nobody wants to sell to a divisional rival who they are attempting to challenge in the season ahead

Would rather have him rot in the reserves for the remainder of his contract than sell him. Would be a lesson to all footballers that they shouldn't try to pull this **** on their clubs.

Well he is worth £40mil+ and is on 100k a week so dont think we can quite afford to do that... but at least refuse to sell in this window ( to anybody in the Premier League) anyway

would love to see a team do this but thay will not cos thay know thay have some 1 thats worth a shed load of cash

Would be a perfect lesson yes but not a good financial move for Liverpool, may aswell be throwing money away - they have done that enough the past couple of seasons as it is

Its old news now, but its quite amazing how much we were coming on in 08/09 to then be destroyed by the yank cowboys, tried to rebuild under FSG, and then put straight back in a hole thanks to Dalglish and Comolli's spending!

Yet again we are rebuilding

Things could be worse eh? Rodgers is doing a good job with what he's got still think it's gunna be seriously hard to get back into the top four

It could be, but it also could be alot better considering it wasn't that long ago we were 2nd in the Premier League

Top 4 has been unrealistic since Rodgers came, we are still shifting what remains of the previous transfers ( Carroll, Adam, Downing etc )

This season is first chance of actually competing, not saying we will, just saying its more likely... When Sturridge and Coutinho were added in January we were a different side 2nd half of the season, and we have added a bit of depth this summer also

still need more, but we are improving

Yeah the January signings were good, plus they've still got a lot on time to develop, especially Coutinho, yet to see the best of him yet I think and that's saying something because he has played well since coming. Be interesting to see what Aspas offers this season, could turn out to be a bargain

He is another who has impressed in pre-season ... still dont think we are strong enough to get that 4th spot but we will certainly be stronger than last season, in my opinion anyway
