Well..
The club finished with more points the season after RVP left, considering Suarez isn't the only target this year I'm confident the side can perform. It seems it really isn't about Suarez any more, a lot of fans on forums including yourself say "he won't make Arsenal challenge", and they claim the Liverpool side is better without him. I don't like the guy, but he would be an improvement in pure footballing terms for most sides and is capable of producing something from nothing.
Really, at the heart of it, it's about what selling to Arsenal would mean in the way Pool fans see their club. To be in that 'middle pack' of clubs fighting for Europa spots instead of the CL is shocking for many. The idea of 'challenging for top four' is exactly what Rodgers knows the fans want to hear, so he wheels it out again and again, but the fact of it is your average league position across the last four seasons has been 7th and this season it's more likely you'll be focusing on a Europa League spot at best. Lastly, if this is the period where Arsenal have been weakest for years and are to be mocked for not winning anything, why can't Liverpool finish above them? You've spent more than Man Utd over the past decade, after all.
Arsenal have maintained 16 consecutive years of CL qualification, despite during the last decade the club having a net spend 19th highest in the league... out of 20 teams. Now that the club actually has some money to throw around and Fergie has gone, there's a good reason for optimism. This is the same side that on its day rocked Milan and Barcelona - it just needs to develop consistency and a lethal touch in front of goal to stop giving sides a reason to stay in the game, and it's only the beginning of a new stage of the project.
Additionally the club has maintained incredibly good worldwide supporter numbers, and frankly whilst winning cups and leagues would have be nice, the fact that these numbers have increased exponentially despite not winning things shows the attraction of the side and the strength of the club and the decision to build up the club instead of put that money into players on the pitch. The glory supporters are happier supporting Utd, Chelsea and City at the moment, it seems, and I for one would be happier with them there. For once a summer is going by and it doesn't appear the club is selling their best players, have an experienced manager, and are looking at multiple targets whilst the first XI itself has improved. The eight years comment has been rolled out again and again, but it is losing its sting now that the club is coming to an end of this miserly period and actually seems to be moving forward.
